John 8:1But Jesus went to the mount of Olives.Jesus went unto the mount of Olives. but Jesus went to the Mount of Olives.
John 8:2And early in the morning he came again into the temple, and all the people came to him; and he sat down and taught them.And early in the morning he came again into the temple, and all the people came unto him; and he sat down, and taught them. At break of day however He returned to the Temple, and there the people came to Him in crowds. He seated Himself;
John 8:3And the scribes and the Pharisees bring [to him] a woman taken in adultery, and having set her in the midst,And the scribes and Pharisees brought unto him a woman taken in adultery; and when they had set her in the midst, and was teaching them when the Scribes and the Pharisees brought to Him a woman who had been found committing adultery. They made her stand in the centre of the court, and they put the case to Him.
John 8:4they say to him, Teacher, this woman has been taken in the very act, committing adultery. They say unto him, Master, this woman was taken in adultery, in the very act. "Rabbi," they said, "this woman has been found in the very act of committing adultery.
John 8:5Now in the law Moses has commanded us to stone such; thou therefore, what sayest thou? Now Moses in the law commanded us, that such should be stoned: but what sayest thou? Now, in the Law, Moses has ordered us to stone such women to death. But what do you say?"
John 8:6But this they said proving him, that they might have [something] to accuse him [of]. But Jesus, having stooped down, wrote with his finger on the ground. This they said, tempting him, that they might have to accuse him. But Jesus stooped down, and with his finger wrote on the ground, as though he heard them not. They asked this in order to put Him to the test, so that they might have some charge to bring against Him. But Jesus leant forward and began to write with His finger on the ground.
John 8:7But when they continued asking him, he lifted himself up and said to them, Let him that is without sin among you first cast the stone at her.So when they continued asking him, he lifted up himself, and said unto them, He that is without sin among you, let him first cast a stone at her. When however they persisted with their question, He raised His head and said to them, "Let the sinless man among you be the first to throw a stone at her."
John 8:8And again stooping down he wrote on the ground. And again he stooped down, and wrote on the ground. Then He leant forward again, and again began to write on the ground.
John 8:9But they, having heard [that], went out one by one beginning from the elder ones until the last; and Jesus was left alone and the woman standing there. And they which heard it, being convicted by their own conscience, went out one by one, beginning at the eldest, even unto the last: and Jesus was left alone, and the woman standing in the midst. They listened to Him, and then, beginning with the eldest, took their departure, one by one, till all were gone. And Jesus was left behind alone and the woman in the centre of the court.
John 8:10And Jesus, lifting himself up and seeing no one but the woman, said to her, Woman, where are those thine accusers? Has no one condemned thee? When Jesus had lifted up himself, and saw none but the woman, he said unto her, Woman, where are those thine accusers? hath no man condemned thee? Then, raising His head, Jesus said to her, "Where are they? Has no one condemned you?"
John 8:11And she said, No one, sir. And Jesus said to her, Neither do I condemn thee: go, and sin no more. She said, No man, Lord. And Jesus said unto her, Neither do I condemn thee: go, and sin no more. "No one, Sir," she replied. "And *I* do not condemn you either," said Jesus; "go, and from this time do not sin any more."]
John 8:12Again therefore Jesus spoke to them, saying, I am the light of the world; he that follows me shall not walk in darkness, but shall have the light of life. Then spake Jesus again unto them, saying, I am the light of the world: he that followeth me shall not walk in darkness, but shall have the light of life. Once more Jesus addressed them. "I am the Light of the world," He said; "the man who follows me shall certainly not walk in the dark, but shall have the light of Life."
John 8:13The Pharisees therefore said to him, Thou bearest witness concerning thyself; thy witness is not true. The Pharisees therefore said unto him, Thou bearest record of thyself; thy record is not true. "You are giving testimony about yourself," said the Pharisees; "your testimony is not true."
John 8:14Jesus answered and said to them, Even if I bear witness concerning myself, my witness is true, because I know whence I came and whither I go: but ye know not whence I come and whither I go.Jesus answered and said unto them, Though I bear record of myself, yet my record is true: for I know whence I came, and whither I go; but ye cannot tell whence I come, and whither I go. "Even if I am giving testimony about myself," replied Jesus, "my testimony is true; for I know where I came from and where I am going, but you know neither of these two things.
John 8:15Ye judge according to the flesh, I judge no one.Ye judge after the flesh; I judge no man. You judge according to appearances: I am judging no one.
John 8:16And if also I judge, my judgment is true, because I am not alone, but I and the Father who has sent me.And yet if I judge, my judgment is true: for I am not alone, but I and the Father that sent me. And even if I do judge, my judgement is just; for I am not alone, but the Father who sent me is with me.
John 8:17And in your law too it is written that the testimony of two men is true:It is also written in your law, that the testimony of two men is true. In your own Law, too, it is written that the testimony of two men is true.
John 8:18I am [one] who bear witness concerning myself, and the Father who has sent me bears witness concerning me.I am one that bear witness of myself, and the Father that sent me beareth witness of me. I am one giving testimony about myself, and the Father who sent me gives testimony about me."
John 8:19They said to him therefore, Where is thy Father? Jesus answered, Ye know neither me nor my Father. If ye had known me, ye would have known also my Father. Then said they unto him, Where is thy Father? Jesus answered, Ye neither know me, nor my Father: if ye had known me, ye should have known my Father also. "Where is your Father?" they asked. "You know my Father as little as you know me." He replied; "if you knew me, you would know my Father also."
John 8:20These words spoke he in the treasury, teaching in the temple; and no one took him, for his hour was not yet come. These words spake Jesus in the treasury, as he taught in the temple: and no man laid hands on him; for his hour was not yet come. These sayings He uttered in the Treasury, while teaching in the Temple; yet no one arrested Him, because His time had not yet come.
John 8:21He said therefore again to them, I go away, and ye shall seek me, and shall die in your sin; where I go ye cannot come. Then said Jesus again unto them, I go my way, and ye shall seek me, and shall die in your sins: whither I go, ye cannot come. Again He said to them, "I am going away. Then you will try to find me, but you will die in your sins. Where I am going, it is impossible for you to come."
John 8:22The Jews therefore said, Will he kill himself, that he says, Where I go ye cannot come? Then said the Jews, Will he kill himself? because he saith, Whither I go, ye cannot come. The Jews began to ask one another, "Is he going to kill himself, do you think, that he says, `Where I am going, it is impossible for you to come'?"
John 8:23And he said to them, Ye are from beneath; I am from above. Ye are of this world; I am not of this world. And he said unto them, Ye are from beneath; I am from above: ye are of this world; I am not of this world. "You," He continued, "are from below, I am from above: you are of this present world, I am not of this present world.
John 8:24I said therefore to you, that ye shall die in your sins; for unless ye shall believe that I am [he], ye shall die in your sins.I said therefore unto you, that ye shall die in your sins: for if ye believe not that I am he, ye shall die in your sins. That is why I told you that you will die in your sins; for, unless you believe that I am He, that is what will happen."
John 8:25They said therefore to him, Who art thou? [And] Jesus said to them, Altogether that which I also say to you. Then said they unto him, Who art thou? And Jesus saith unto them, Even the same that I said unto you from the beginning. "You who are you?" they asked. "How is it that I am speaking to you at all?" replied Jesus.
John 8:26I have many things to say and to judge concerning you, but he that has sent me is true, and I, what I have heard from him, these things I say to the world.I have many things to say and to judge of you: but he that sent me is true; and I speak to the world those things which I have heard of him. "Many things I have to speak and to judge concerning you. But He who sent me is true, and the things which I have heard from Him are those which I have come into the world to speak."
John 8:27They knew not that he spoke to them of the Father. They understood not that he spake to them of the Father. They did not perceive that He was speaking to them of the Father.
John 8:28Jesus therefore said to them, When ye shall have lifted up the Son of man, then ye shall know that I am [he], and [that] I do nothing of myself, but as the Father has taught me I speak these things. Then said Jesus unto them, When ye have lifted up the Son of man, then shall ye know that I am he, and that I do nothing of myself; but as my Father hath taught me, I speak these things. So Jesus added, "When you have lifted up the Son of Man, then you will know that I am He. Of myself I do nothing; but as the Father has taught me, so I speak.
John 8:29And he that has sent me is with me; he has not left me alone, because I do always the things that are pleasing to him.And he that sent me is with me: the Father hath not left me alone; for I do always those things that please him. And He who sent me is with me. He has not left me alone: for I do always what is pleasing to Him."
John 8:30As he spoke these things many believed on him.As he spake these words, many believed on him. As He thus spoke, many became believers in Him.
John 8:31Jesus therefore said to the Jews who believed him, If ye abide in my word, ye are truly my disciples;Then said Jesus to those Jews which believed on him, If ye continue in my word, then are ye my disciples indeed; Jesus therefore said to those of the Jews who had now believed in Him, "As for you, if you hold fast to my teaching, then you are truly my disciples;
John 8:32and ye shall know the truth, and the truth shall set you free. And ye shall know the truth, and the truth shall make you free. and you shall know the Truth, and the Truth will make you free."
John 8:33They answered him, We are Abraham's seed, and have never been under bondage to any one; how sayest thou, Ye shall become free? They answered him, We be Abraham's seed, and were never in bondage to any man: how sayest thou, Ye shall be made free? "We are descendants of Abraham," they answered, "and have never at any time been in slavery to any one. What do those words of yours mean, `You shall become free'?"
John 8:34Jesus answered them, Verily, verily, I say to you, Every one that practises sin is the bondman of sin.Jesus answered them, Verily, verily, I say unto you, Whosoever committeth sin is the servant of sin. "In most solemn truth I tell you," replied Jesus, "that every one who commits sin is the slave of sin.
John 8:35Now the bondman abides not in the house for ever: the son abides for ever. And the servant abideth not in the house for ever: but the Son abideth ever. Now a slave does not remain permanently in his master's house, but a son does.
John 8:36If therefore the Son shall set you free, ye shall be really free.If the Son therefore shall make you free, ye shall be free indeed. If then the Son shall make you free, you will be free indeed.
John 8:37I know that ye are Abraham's seed; but ye seek to kill me, because my word has no entrance in you.I know that ye are Abraham's seed; but ye seek to kill me, because my word hath no place in you. You are descendants of Abraham, I know; but you want to kill me, because my teaching gains no ground within you.
John 8:38I speak what I have seen with my Father, and ye then do what ye have seen with your father.I speak that which I have seen with my Father: and ye do that which ye have seen with your father. The words I speak are those I have learnt in the presence of the Father. Therefore you also should do what you have heard from your father."
John 8:39They answered and said to him, Abraham is our father. Jesus says to them, If ye were Abraham's children, ye would do the works of Abraham; They answered and said unto him, Abraham is our father. Jesus saith unto them, If ye were Abraham's children, ye would do the works of Abraham. "Our father is Abraham," they said. "If you were Abraham's children," replied Jesus, "it is Abraham's deeds that you would be doing.
John 8:40but now ye seek to kill me, a man who has spoken the truth to you, which I have heard from God: this did not Abraham. But now ye seek to kill me, a man that hath told you the truth, which I have heard of God: this did not Abraham. But, in fact, you are longing to kill me, a man who has spoken to you the truth which I have heard from God. Abraham did not do that.
John 8:41Ye do the works of your father. They said [therefore] to him, We are not born of fornication; we have one father, God.Ye do the deeds of your father. Then said they to him, We be not born of fornication; we have one Father, even God. You are doing the deeds of your father." "We," they replied, "are not illegitimate children. We have one Father, namely God."
John 8:42Jesus said to them, If God were your father ye would have loved me, for I came forth from God and am come [from him]; for neither am I come of myself, but *he* has sent me.Jesus said unto them, If God were your Father, ye would love me: for I proceeded forth and came from God; neither came I of myself, but he sent me. "If God were your Father," said Jesus, "you would love me; for it is from God that I came and I am now here. I have not come of myself, but *He* sent me.
John 8:43Why do ye not know my speech? Because ye cannot hear my word. Why do ye not understand my speech? even because ye cannot hear my word. How is it you do not understand me when I speak? It is because you cannot bear to listen to my words.
John 8:44Ye are of the devil, as [your] father, and ye desire to do the lusts of your father. He was a murderer from the beginning, and has not stood in the truth, because there is no truth in him. When he speaks falsehood, he speaks of what is his own; for he is a liar and its father:Ye are of your father the devil, and the lusts of your father ye will do. He was a murderer from the beginning, and abode not in the truth, because there is no truth in him. When he speaketh a lie, he speaketh of his own: for he is a liar, and the father of it. The father whose sons you are is the Devil; and you desire to do what gives him pleasure. *He* was a murderer from the beginning, and does not stand firm in the truth for there is no truth in him. Whenever he utters his lie, he utters it out of his own store; for he is a liar, and the father of lies.
John 8:45and because I speak the truth, ye do not believe me.And because I tell you the truth, ye believe me not. But because I speak the truth, you do not believe me.
John 8:46Which of you convinces me of sin? If I speak truth, why do ye not believe me?Which of you convinceth me of sin? And if I say the truth, why do ye not believe me? Which of *you* convicts me of sin? If I speak the truth, why do you not believe me?
John 8:47He that is of God hears the words of God: therefore ye hear [them] not, because ye are not of God.He that is of God heareth God's words: ye therefore hear them not, because ye are not of God. He who is a child of God listens to God's words. You do not listen to them: and why? It is because you are not God's children."
John 8:48The Jews answered and said to him, Say we not well that thou art a Samaritan and hast a demon? Then answered the Jews, and said unto him, Say we not well that thou art a Samaritan, and hast a devil? "Are we not right," answered the Jews, "in saying that you are a Samaritan and are possessed by a demon?"
John 8:49Jesus answered, I have not a demon; but I honour my Father, and ye dishonour me.Jesus answered, I have not a devil; but I honour my Father, and ye do dishonour me. "I am not possessed by a demon," replied Jesus. "On the contrary I honour my Father, and you dishonour me.
John 8:50But I do not seek my own glory: there is he that seeks and judges. And I seek not mine own glory: there is one that seeketh and judgeth. I, however, am not aiming at glory for myself: there is One who aims at glory for me and who judges.
John 8:51Verily, verily, I say unto you, If any one shall keep my word, he shall never see death.Verily, verily, I say unto you, If a man keep my saying, he shall never see death. In most solemn truth I tell you that if any one shall have obeyed my teaching he shall in no case ever see death."
John 8:52The Jews therefore said to him, Now we know that thou hast a demon. Abraham has died, and the prophets, and thou sayest, If any one keep my word, he shall never taste death. Then said the Jews unto him, Now we know that thou hast a devil. Abraham is dead, and the prophets; and thou sayest, If a man keep my saying, he shall never taste of death. "Now," exclaimed the Jews, "we know that you are possessed by a demon. Abraham died, and so did the Prophets, and yet *you* say, `If any one shall have obeyed my teaching, he shall in no case ever taste death.'
John 8:53Art thou greater than our father Abraham, who has died? and the prophets have died: whom makest thou thyself?Art thou greater than our father Abraham, which is dead? and the prophets are dead: whom makest thou thyself? Are you really greater than our forefather Abraham? For he died. And the prophets died. Who do you make yourself out to be?"
John 8:54Jesus answered, If I glorify myself, my glory is nothing: it is my Father who glorifies me, [of] whom ye say, He is our God.Jesus answered, If I honour myself, my honour is nothing: it is my Father that honoureth me; of whom ye say, that he is your God: "Were I to glorify myself," answered Jesus, "I should have no real glory. There is One who glorifies me namely my Father, who you say is your God.
John 8:55And ye know him not; but I know him; and if I said, I know him not, I should be like you, a liar. But I know him, and I keep his word.Yet ye have not known him; but I know him: and if I should say, I know him not, I shall be a liar like unto you: but I know him, and keep his saying. You do not know Him, but I know Him perfectly; and were I to deny my knowledge of Him, I should resemble you, and be a liar. On the contrary I do know Him, and I obey His commands.
John 8:56Your father Abraham exulted in that he should see my day, and he saw and rejoiced.Your father Abraham rejoiced to see my day: and he saw it, and was glad. Abraham your forefather exulted in the hope of seeing my day: and he saw it, and was glad."
John 8:57The Jews therefore said to him, Thou hast not yet fifty years, and hast thou seen Abraham? Then said the Jews unto him, Thou art not yet fifty years old, and hast thou seen Abraham? "You are not yet fifty years old," cried the Jews, "and have you seen Abraham?"
John 8:58Jesus said to them, Verily, verily, I say unto you, Before Abraham was, I am.Jesus said unto them, Verily, verily, I say unto you, Before Abraham was, I am. "In most solemn truth," answered Jesus, "I tell you that before Abraham came into existence, I am."
John 8:59They took up therefore stones that they might cast [them] at him; but Jesus hid himself and went out of the temple, [going through the midst of them, and thus passed on.]Then took they up stones to cast at him: but Jesus hid himself, and went out of the temple, going through the midst of them, and so passed by. Thereupon they took up stones with which to stone Him, but He hid Himself and went away out of the Temple.
