John 9:1And as he passed on, he saw a man blind from birth. And as Jesus passed by, he saw a man which was blind from his birth. As He passed by, He saw a man who had been blind from his birth.
John 9:2And his disciples asked him, saying, Rabbi, who sinned, this [man] or his parents, that he should be born blind? And his disciples asked him, saying, Master, who did sin, this man, or his parents, that he was born blind? So His disciples asked Him, "Rabbi, who sinned this man or his parents that he was born blind?"
John 9:3Jesus answered, Neither has this [man] sinned nor his parents, but that the works of God should be manifested in him.Jesus answered, Neither hath this man sinned, nor his parents: but that the works of God should be made manifest in him. "Neither he nor his parents sinned," answered Jesus, "but he was born blind in order that God's mercy might be openly shown in him.
John 9:4I must work the works of him that has sent me while it is day. [The] night is coming, when no one can work.I must work the works of him that sent me, while it is day: the night cometh, when no man can work. We must do the works of Him who sent me while there is daylight. Night is coming on, when no one can work.
John 9:5As long as I am in the world, I am [the] light of the world. As long as I am in the world, I am the light of the world. When I am in the world, I am the Light of the world."
John 9:6Having said these things, he spat on the ground and made mud of the spittle, and put the mud, as ointment, on his eyes. When he had thus spoken, he spat on the ground, and made clay of the spittle, and he anointed the eyes of the blind man with the clay, After thus speaking, He spat on the ground, and then, kneading the dust and spittle into clay, He smeared the clay over the man's eyes and said to him,
John 9:7And he said to him, Go, wash in the pool of Siloam, which is interpreted, Sent. He went therefore and washed, and came seeing. And said unto him, Go, wash in the pool of Siloam, (which is by interpretation, Sent.) He went his way therefore, and washed, and came seeing. "Go and wash in the pool of Siloam" the name means `Sent.' So he went and washed his eyes, and returned able to see.
John 9:8The neighbours therefore, and those who used to see him before, that he was a beggar, said, Is not this he that was sitting and begging? The neighbours therefore, and they which before had seen him that he was blind, said, Is not this he that sat and begged? His neighbours, therefore, and the other people to whom he had been a familiar object because he was a beggar, began asking, "Is not this the man who used to sit and beg?"
John 9:9Some said, It is he; others said, No, but he is like him: *he* said, It is I.Some said, This is he: others said, He is like him: but he said, I am he. "Yes it is," replied some of them. "No it is not," said others, "but he is like him." His own statement was, "I am the man."
John 9:10They said therefore to him, How have thine eyes been opened? Therefore said they unto him, How were thine eyes opened? "How then were your eyes opened?" they asked.
John 9:11He answered [and said], A man called Jesus made mud and anointed mine eyes, and said to me, Go to Siloam and wash: and having gone and washed, I saw.He answered and said, A man that is called Jesus made clay, and anointed mine eyes, and said unto me, Go to the pool of Siloam, and wash: and I went and washed, and I received sight. "He whose name is Jesus," he answered, "made clay and smeared my eyes with it, and then told me to go to Siloam and wash. So I went and washed and obtained sight."
John 9:12They said therefore to him, Where is he? He says, I do not know. Then said they unto him, Where is he? He said, I know not. "Where is he?" they inquired, but the man did not know.
John 9:13They bring him who was before blind to the Pharisees. They brought to the Pharisees him that aforetime was blind. They brought him to the Pharisees the man who had been blind.
John 9:14Now it was sabbath when Jesus made the mud and opened his eyes. And it was the sabbath day when Jesus made the clay, and opened his eyes. Now the day on which Jesus made the clay and opened the man's eyes was the Sabbath.
John 9:15The Pharisees therefore also again asked him how he received his sight. And he said to them, He put mud upon mine eyes, and I washed, and I see. Then again the Pharisees also asked him how he had received his sight. He said unto them, He put clay upon mine eyes, and I washed, and do see. So the Pharisees renewed their questioning as to how he had obtained his sight. "He put clay on my eyes," he replied, "and I washed, and now I can see."
John 9:16Some of the Pharisees therefore said, This man is not of God, for he does not keep the sabbath. Others said, How can a sinful man perform such signs? And there was a division among them. Therefore said some of the Pharisees, This man is not of God, because he keepeth not the sabbath day. Others said, How can a man that is a sinner do such miracles? And there was a division among them. This led some of the Pharisees to say, "That man has not come from God, for he does not keep the Sabbath." "How is it possible for a bad man to do such miracles?" argued others.
John 9:17They say therefore again to the blind [man], What dost thou say of him, that he has opened thine eyes? And he said, He is a prophet. They say unto the blind man again, What sayest thou of him, that he hath opened thine eyes? He said, He is a prophet. And there was a division among them. So again they asked the once blind man, "What is your account of him? for he opened your eyes." "He is a Prophet," he replied.
John 9:18The Jews therefore did not believe concerning him that he was blind and had received sight, until they had called the parents of him that had received sight. But the Jews did not believe concerning him, that he had been blind, and received his sight, until they called the parents of him that had received his sight. The Jews, however, did not believe the statement concerning him that he had been blind and had obtained his sight until they called his parents and asked them,
John 9:19And they asked them saying, This is your son, of whom ye say that he was born blind: how then does he now see?And they asked them, saying, Is this your son, who ye say was born blind? how then doth he now see? "Is this your son, who you say was born blind? How is it then that he can now see?"
John 9:20His parents answered [them] and said, We know that this is our son, and that he was born blind;His parents answered them and said, We know that this is our son, and that he was born blind: "We know," replied the parents, "that this is our son and that he was born blind;
John 9:21but how he now sees we do not know, or who has opened his eyes we do not know. *He* is of age: ask *him*; *he* will speak concerning himself. But by what means he now seeth, we know not; or who hath opened his eyes, we know not: he is of age; ask him: he shall speak for himself. but how it is that he can now see or who has opened his eyes we do not know. Ask him himself; he is of full age; he himself will give his own account of it."
John 9:22His parents said these things because they feared the Jews, for the Jews had already agreed that if any one confessed him [to be the] Christ, he should be excommunicated from the synagogue. These words spake his parents, because they feared the Jews: for the Jews had agreed already, that if any man did confess that he was Christ, he should be put out of the synagogue. Such was their answer, because they were afraid of the Jews; for the Jews had already settled among themselves that if any one should acknowledge Jesus as the Christ, he should be excluded from the synagogue.
John 9:23On this account his parents said, He is of age: ask *him*.Therefore said his parents, He is of age; ask him. That was why his parents said, "He is of full age: ask him himself."
John 9:24They called therefore a second time the man who had been blind, and said to him, Give glory to God: we know that this man is sinful. Then again called they the man that was blind, and said unto him, Give God the praise: we know that this man is a sinner. A second time therefore they called the man who had been blind, and said, "Give God the praise: we know that that man is a sinner."
John 9:25He answered therefore, If he is sinful I know not. One thing I know, that, being blind [before], now I see.He answered and said, Whether he be a sinner or no, I know not: one thing I know, that, whereas I was blind, now I see. "Whether he is a sinner or not, I do not know," he replied; "one thing I know that I was once blind and that now I can see."
John 9:26And they said to him again, What did he do to thee? how opened he thine eyes? Then said they to him again, What did he to thee? how opened he thine eyes? "What did he do to you?" they asked; "how did he open your eyes?"
John 9:27He answered them, I told you already and ye did not hear: why do ye desire to hear again? do ye also wish to become his disciples? He answered them, I have told you already, and ye did not hear: wherefore would ye hear it again? will ye also be his disciples? "I have told you already," he replied, "and you did not listen to me. Why do you want to hear it again? Do you also mean to be disciples of his?"
John 9:28They railed at him, and said, Thou art his disciple, but we are disciples of Moses. Then they reviled him, and said, Thou art his disciple; but we are Moses' disciples. Then they railed at him, and said, "You are that man's disciple, but we are disciples of Moses.
John 9:29We know that God spoke to Moses; but [as to] this [man], we know not whence he is.We know that God spake unto Moses: as for this fellow, we know not from whence he is. We know that God spoke to Moses; but as for this fellow we do not know where he comes from."
John 9:30The man answered and said to them, Now in this is a wonderful thing, that *ye* do not know whence he is, and he has opened mine eyes. The man answered and said unto them, Why herein is a marvellous thing, that ye know not from whence he is, and yet he hath opened mine eyes. "Why, this is marvellous!" the man replied; "you do not know where he comes from, and yet he has opened my eyes!
John 9:31[But] we know that God does not hear sinners; but if any one be God-fearing and do his will, him he hears. Now we know that God heareth not sinners: but if any man be a worshipper of God, and doeth his will, him he heareth. We know that God does not listen to bad people, but that if any one is a God-fearing man and obeys Him, to him He listens.
John 9:32Since time was, it has not been heard that any one opened the eyes of one born blind.Since the world began was it not heard that any man opened the eyes of one that was born blind. From the beginning of the world such a thing was never heard of as that any one should open the eyes of a man blind from his birth.
John 9:33If this [man] were not of God he would be able to do nothing. If this man were not of God, he could do nothing. Had that man not come from God, he could have done nothing."
John 9:34They answered and said to him, Thou hast been wholly born in sins, and thou teachest us? And they cast him out. They answered and said unto him, Thou wast altogether born in sins, and dost thou teach us? And they cast him out. "You," they replied, "were wholly begotten and born in sin, and do *you* teach *us*?" And they put him out of the synagogue.
John 9:35Jesus heard that they had cast him out, and having found him, he said to him, Thou, dost thou believe on the Son of God?Jesus heard that they had cast him out; and when he had found him, he said unto him, Dost thou believe on the Son of God? Jesus heard that they had done this. So having found him, He asked him, "Do you believe in the Son of God?"
John 9:36He answered and said, And who is he, Lord, that I may believe on him?He answered and said, Who is he, Lord, that I might believe on him? "Who is He, Sir?" replied the man. "Tell me, so that I may believe in Him."
John 9:37And Jesus said to him, Thou hast both seen him, and he that speaks with thee is he.And Jesus said unto him, Thou hast both seen him, and it is he that talketh with thee. "You have seen Him," said Jesus; "and not only so: He is now speaking to you."
John 9:38And he said, I believe, Lord: and he did him homage. And he said, Lord, I believe. And he worshipped him. "I believe, Sir," he said. And he threw himself at His feet.
John 9:39And Jesus said, For judgment am I come into this world, that they which see not may see, and they which see may become blind. And Jesus said, For judgment I am come into this world, that they which see not might see; and that they which see might be made blind. "I came into this world," said Jesus, "to judge men, that those who do not see may see, and that those who do see may become blind."
John 9:40And [some] of the Pharisees who were with him heard these things, and they said to him, Are we blind also? And some of the Pharisees which were with him heard these words, and said unto him, Are we blind also? These words were heard by those of the Pharisees who were present, and they asked Him, "Are *we* also blind?"
John 9:41Jesus said to them, If ye were blind ye would not have sin; but now ye say, We see, your sin remains.Jesus said unto them, If ye were blind, ye should have no sin: but now ye say, We see; therefore your sin remaineth. "If you were blind," answered Jesus, "you would have no sin; but as a matter of fact you boast that you see. So your sin remains!"
