John 9:1 | And as he passed on, he saw a man blind from birth. | And as Jesus passed by, he saw a man which was blind from his birth. | As He passed by, He saw a man who had been blind from his birth. |
John 9:2 | And his disciples asked him, saying, Rabbi, who sinned, this [man] or his parents, that he should be born blind? | And his disciples asked him, saying, Master, who did sin, this man, or his parents, that he was born blind? | So His disciples asked Him, "Rabbi, who sinned this man or his parents that he was born blind?" |
John 9:3 | Jesus answered, Neither has this [man] sinned nor his parents, but that the works of God should be manifested in him. | Jesus answered, Neither hath this man sinned, nor his parents: but that the works of God should be made manifest in him. | "Neither he nor his parents sinned," answered Jesus, "but he was born blind in order that God's mercy might be openly shown in him. |
John 9:4 | I must work the works of him that has sent me while it is day. [The] night is coming, when no one can work. | I must work the works of him that sent me, while it is day: the night cometh, when no man can work. | We must do the works of Him who sent me while there is daylight. Night is coming on, when no one can work. |
John 9:5 | As long as I am in the world, I am [the] light of the world. | As long as I am in the world, I am the light of the world. | When I am in the world, I am the Light of the world." |
John 9:6 | Having said these things, he spat on the ground and made mud of the spittle, and put the mud, as ointment, on his eyes. | When he had thus spoken, he spat on the ground, and made clay of the spittle, and he anointed the eyes of the blind man with the clay, | After thus speaking, He spat on the ground, and then, kneading the dust and spittle into clay, He smeared the clay over the man's eyes and said to him, |
John 9:7 | And he said to him, Go, wash in the pool of Siloam, which is interpreted, Sent. He went therefore and washed, and came seeing. | And said unto him, Go, wash in the pool of Siloam, (which is by interpretation, Sent.) He went his way therefore, and washed, and came seeing. | "Go and wash in the pool of Siloam" the name means `Sent.' So he went and washed his eyes, and returned able to see. |
John 9:8 | The neighbours therefore, and those who used to see him before, that he was a beggar, said, Is not this he that was sitting and begging? | The neighbours therefore, and they which before had seen him that he was blind, said, Is not this he that sat and begged? | His neighbours, therefore, and the other people to whom he had been a familiar object because he was a beggar, began asking, "Is not this the man who used to sit and beg?" |
John 9:9 | Some said, It is he; others said, No, but he is like him: *he* said, It is I. | Some said, This is he: others said, He is like him: but he said, I am he. | "Yes it is," replied some of them. "No it is not," said others, "but he is like him." His own statement was, "I am the man." |
John 9:10 | They said therefore to him, How have thine eyes been opened? | Therefore said they unto him, How were thine eyes opened? | "How then were your eyes opened?" they asked. |
John 9:11 | He answered [and said], A man called Jesus made mud and anointed mine eyes, and said to me, Go to Siloam and wash: and having gone and washed, I saw. | He answered and said, A man that is called Jesus made clay, and anointed mine eyes, and said unto me, Go to the pool of Siloam, and wash: and I went and washed, and I received sight. | "He whose name is Jesus," he answered, "made clay and smeared my eyes with it, and then told me to go to Siloam and wash. So I went and washed and obtained sight." |
John 9:12 | They said therefore to him, Where is he? He says, I do not know. | Then said they unto him, Where is he? He said, I know not. | "Where is he?" they inquired, but the man did not know. |
John 9:13 | They bring him who was before blind to the Pharisees. | They brought to the Pharisees him that aforetime was blind. | They brought him to the Pharisees the man who had been blind. |
John 9:14 | Now it was sabbath when Jesus made the mud and opened his eyes. | And it was the sabbath day when Jesus made the clay, and opened his eyes. | Now the day on which Jesus made the clay and opened the man's eyes was the Sabbath. |
John 9:15 | The Pharisees therefore also again asked him how he received his sight. And he said to them, He put mud upon mine eyes, and I washed, and I see. | Then again the Pharisees also asked him how he had received his sight. He said unto them, He put clay upon mine eyes, and I washed, and do see. | So the Pharisees renewed their questioning as to how he had obtained his sight. "He put clay on my eyes," he replied, "and I washed, and now I can see." |
John 9:16 | Some of the Pharisees therefore said, This man is not of God, for he does not keep the sabbath. Others said, How can a sinful man perform such signs? And there was a division among them. | Therefore said some of the Pharisees, This man is not of God, because he keepeth not the sabbath day. Others said, How can a man that is a sinner do such miracles? And there was a division among them. | This led some of the Pharisees to say, "That man has not come from God, for he does not keep the Sabbath." "How is it possible for a bad man to do such miracles?" argued others. |
John 9:17 | They say therefore again to the blind [man], What dost thou say of him, that he has opened thine eyes? And he said, He is a prophet. | They say unto the blind man again, What sayest thou of him, that he hath opened thine eyes? He said, He is a prophet. | And there was a division among them. So again they asked the once blind man, "What is your account of him? for he opened your eyes." "He is a Prophet," he replied. |
John 9:18 | The Jews therefore did not believe concerning him that he was blind and had received sight, until they had called the parents of him that had received sight. | But the Jews did not believe concerning him, that he had been blind, and received his sight, until they called the parents of him that had received his sight. | The Jews, however, did not believe the statement concerning him that he had been blind and had obtained his sight until they called his parents and asked them, |
John 9:19 | And they asked them saying, This is your son, of whom ye say that he was born blind: how then does he now see? | And they asked them, saying, Is this your son, who ye say was born blind? how then doth he now see? | "Is this your son, who you say was born blind? How is it then that he can now see?" |
John 9:20 | His parents answered [them] and said, We know that this is our son, and that he was born blind; | His parents answered them and said, We know that this is our son, and that he was born blind: | "We know," replied the parents, "that this is our son and that he was born blind; |
John 9:21 | but how he now sees we do not know, or who has opened his eyes we do not know. *He* is of age: ask *him*; *he* will speak concerning himself. | But by what means he now seeth, we know not; or who hath opened his eyes, we know not: he is of age; ask him: he shall speak for himself. | but how it is that he can now see or who has opened his eyes we do not know. Ask him himself; he is of full age; he himself will give his own account of it." |
John 9:22 | His parents said these things because they feared the Jews, for the Jews had already agreed that if any one confessed him [to be the] Christ, he should be excommunicated from the synagogue. | These words spake his parents, because they feared the Jews: for the Jews had agreed already, that if any man did confess that he was Christ, he should be put out of the synagogue. | Such was their answer, because they were afraid of the Jews; for the Jews had already settled among themselves that if any one should acknowledge Jesus as the Christ, he should be excluded from the synagogue. |
John 9:23 | On this account his parents said, He is of age: ask *him*. | Therefore said his parents, He is of age; ask him. | That was why his parents said, "He is of full age: ask him himself." |
John 9:24 | They called therefore a second time the man who had been blind, and said to him, Give glory to God: we know that this man is sinful. | Then again called they the man that was blind, and said unto him, Give God the praise: we know that this man is a sinner. | A second time therefore they called the man who had been blind, and said, "Give God the praise: we know that that man is a sinner." |
John 9:25 | He answered therefore, If he is sinful I know not. One thing I know, that, being blind [before], now I see. | He answered and said, Whether he be a sinner or no, I know not: one thing I know, that, whereas I was blind, now I see. | "Whether he is a sinner or not, I do not know," he replied; "one thing I know that I was once blind and that now I can see." |
John 9:26 | And they said to him again, What did he do to thee? how opened he thine eyes? | Then said they to him again, What did he to thee? how opened he thine eyes? | "What did he do to you?" they asked; "how did he open your eyes?" |
John 9:27 | He answered them, I told you already and ye did not hear: why do ye desire to hear again? do ye also wish to become his disciples? | He answered them, I have told you already, and ye did not hear: wherefore would ye hear it again? will ye also be his disciples? | "I have told you already," he replied, "and you did not listen to me. Why do you want to hear it again? Do you also mean to be disciples of his?" |
John 9:28 | They railed at him, and said, Thou art his disciple, but we are disciples of Moses. | Then they reviled him, and said, Thou art his disciple; but we are Moses' disciples. | Then they railed at him, and said, "You are that man's disciple, but we are disciples of Moses. |
John 9:29 | We know that God spoke to Moses; but [as to] this [man], we know not whence he is. | We know that God spake unto Moses: as for this fellow, we know not from whence he is. | We know that God spoke to Moses; but as for this fellow we do not know where he comes from." |
John 9:30 | The man answered and said to them, Now in this is a wonderful thing, that *ye* do not know whence he is, and he has opened mine eyes. | The man answered and said unto them, Why herein is a marvellous thing, that ye know not from whence he is, and yet he hath opened mine eyes. | "Why, this is marvellous!" the man replied; "you do not know where he comes from, and yet he has opened my eyes! |
John 9:31 | [But] we know that God does not hear sinners; but if any one be God-fearing and do his will, him he hears. | Now we know that God heareth not sinners: but if any man be a worshipper of God, and doeth his will, him he heareth. | We know that God does not listen to bad people, but that if any one is a God-fearing man and obeys Him, to him He listens. |
John 9:32 | Since time was, it has not been heard that any one opened the eyes of one born blind. | Since the world began was it not heard that any man opened the eyes of one that was born blind. | From the beginning of the world such a thing was never heard of as that any one should open the eyes of a man blind from his birth. |
John 9:33 | If this [man] were not of God he would be able to do nothing. | If this man were not of God, he could do nothing. | Had that man not come from God, he could have done nothing." |
John 9:34 | They answered and said to him, Thou hast been wholly born in sins, and thou teachest us? And they cast him out. | They answered and said unto him, Thou wast altogether born in sins, and dost thou teach us? And they cast him out. | "You," they replied, "were wholly begotten and born in sin, and do *you* teach *us*?" And they put him out of the synagogue. |
John 9:35 | Jesus heard that they had cast him out, and having found him, he said to him, Thou, dost thou believe on the Son of God? | Jesus heard that they had cast him out; and when he had found him, he said unto him, Dost thou believe on the Son of God? | Jesus heard that they had done this. So having found him, He asked him, "Do you believe in the Son of God?" |
John 9:36 | He answered and said, And who is he, Lord, that I may believe on him? | He answered and said, Who is he, Lord, that I might believe on him? | "Who is He, Sir?" replied the man. "Tell me, so that I may believe in Him." |
John 9:37 | And Jesus said to him, Thou hast both seen him, and he that speaks with thee is he. | And Jesus said unto him, Thou hast both seen him, and it is he that talketh with thee. | "You have seen Him," said Jesus; "and not only so: He is now speaking to you." |
John 9:38 | And he said, I believe, Lord: and he did him homage. | And he said, Lord, I believe. And he worshipped him. | "I believe, Sir," he said. And he threw himself at His feet. |
John 9:39 | And Jesus said, For judgment am I come into this world, that they which see not may see, and they which see may become blind. | And Jesus said, For judgment I am come into this world, that they which see not might see; and that they which see might be made blind. | "I came into this world," said Jesus, "to judge men, that those who do not see may see, and that those who do see may become blind." |
John 9:40 | And [some] of the Pharisees who were with him heard these things, and they said to him, Are we blind also? | And some of the Pharisees which were with him heard these words, and said unto him, Are we blind also? | These words were heard by those of the Pharisees who were present, and they asked Him, "Are *we* also blind?" |
John 9:41 | Jesus said to them, If ye were blind ye would not have sin; but now ye say, We see, your sin remains. | Jesus said unto them, If ye were blind, ye should have no sin: but now ye say, We see; therefore your sin remaineth. | "If you were blind," answered Jesus, "you would have no sin; but as a matter of fact you boast that you see. So your sin remains!" |
