Matthew 15:1 | Then the scribes and Pharisees from Jerusalem come up to Jesus, saying, | Then came to Jesus scribes and Pharisees, which were of Jerusalem, saying, | Then there came to Jesus a party of Pharisees and Scribes from Jerusalem, who inquired, |
Matthew 15:2 | Why do thy disciples transgress what has been delivered by the ancients? for they do not wash their hands when they eat bread. | Why do thy disciples transgress the tradition of the elders? for they wash not their hands when they eat bread. | "Why do your disciples transgress the tradition of the Elders by not washing their hands before meals?" |
Matthew 15:3 | But he answering said to them, Why do *ye* also transgress the commandment of God on account of your traditional teaching? | But he answered and said unto them, Why do ye also transgress the commandment of God by your tradition? | "Why do you, too," He retorted, "transgress God's commands for the sake of your tradition? |
Matthew 15:4 | For God commanded saying, Honour father and mother; and, He that speaks ill of father or mother, let him die the death. | For God commanded, saying, Honour thy father and mother: and, He that curseth father or mother, let him die the death. | For God said, `Honour thy father and thy mother'; and `Let him who reviles father or mother be certainly put to death'; |
Matthew 15:5 | But *ye* say, Whosoever shall say to his father or mother, It is a gift, whatsoever [it be] by which [received] from me thou wouldest be profited: | But ye say, Whosoever shall say to his father or his mother, It is a gift, by whatsoever thou mightest be profited by me; | but you this is what you say: `If a man says to his father or mother, That is consecrated, whatever it is, which otherwise you should have received from me |
Matthew 15:6 | and he shall in no wise honour his father or his mother; and ye have made void the commandment of God on account of your traditional teaching. | And honour not his father or his mother, he shall be free. Thus have ye made the commandment of God of none effect by your tradition. | he shall be absolved from honouring his father'; and so you have abrogated God's Word for the sake of your tradition. |
Matthew 15:7 | Hypocrites! well has Esaias prophesied about you, saying, | Ye hypocrites, well did Esaias prophesy of you, saying, | Hypocrites! well did Isaiah prophesy of you, |
Matthew 15:8 | This people honour me with the lips, but their heart is far away from me; | This people draweth nigh unto me with their mouth, and honoureth me with their lips; but their heart is far from me. | "`This is a People who honour Me with their lips, while their heart is far away from Me; |
Matthew 15:9 | but in vain do they worship me, teaching [as] teachings commandments of men. | But in vain they do worship me, teaching for doctrines the commandments of men. | but it is in vain they worship Me, while they lay down precepts which are mere human rules.'" |
Matthew 15:10 | And having called to [him] the crowd, he said to them, Hear and understand: | And he called the multitude, and said unto them, Hear, and understand: | Then, when He had called the people to Him, Jesus said, "Hear and understand. |
Matthew 15:11 | Not what enters into the mouth defiles the man; but what goes forth out of the mouth, this defiles the man. | Not that which goeth into the mouth defileth a man; but that which cometh out of the mouth, this defileth a man. | It is not what goes into a man's mouth that defiles him; but it is what comes out of his mouth *that* defiles a man." |
Matthew 15:12 | Then his disciples, coming up, said to him, Dost thou know that the Pharisees, having heard this word, have been offended? | Then came his disciples, and said unto him, Knowest thou that the Pharisees were offended, after they heard this saying? | Then His disciples came and said to Him, "Do you know that the Pharisees were greatly shocked when they heard those words?" |
Matthew 15:13 | But he answering said, Every plant which my heavenly Father has not planted shall be rooted up. | But he answered and said, Every plant, which my heavenly Father hath not planted, shall be rooted up. | "Every plant," He replied, "which my Heavenly Father has not planted will be rooted up. |
Matthew 15:14 | Leave them alone; they are blind leaders of blind: but if blind lead blind, both will fall into a ditch. | Let them alone: they be blind leaders of the blind. And if the blind lead the blind, both shall fall into the ditch. | Leave them alone. They are blind guides of the blind; and if a blind man leads a blind man, both will fall into some pit." |
Matthew 15:15 | And Peter answering said to him, Expound to us this parable. | Then answered Peter and said unto him, Declare unto us this parable. | "Explain to us this figurative language," said Peter. |
Matthew 15:16 | But he said, Are *ye* also still without intelligence? | And Jesus said, Are ye also yet without understanding? | "Are even you," He answered, "still without intellingence? |
Matthew 15:17 | Do ye not yet apprehend, that everything that enters into the mouth finds its way into the belly, and is cast forth into the draught? | Do not ye yet understand, that whatsoever entereth in at the mouth goeth into the belly, and is cast out into the draught? | Do you not understand that whatever enters the mouth passes into the stomach and is afterwards ejected from the body? |
Matthew 15:18 | but the things which go forth out of the mouth come out of the heart, and those defile man. | But those things which proceed out of the mouth come forth from the heart; and they defile the man. | But the things that come out of the mouth proceed from the heart, and it is these that defile the man. |
Matthew 15:19 | For out of the heart come forth evil thoughts, murders, adulteries, fornications, thefts, false witnessings, blasphemies; | For out of the heart proceed evil thoughts, murders, adulteries, fornications, thefts, false witness, blasphemies: | For out of the heart proceed wicked thoughts, murder, adultery, fornication, theft, perjury, impiety of speech. |
Matthew 15:20 | these are the things which defile man; but the eating with unwashen hands does not defile man. | These are the things which defile a man: but to eat with unwashen hands defileth not a man. | These are the things which defile the man; but eating with unwashed hands does not defile." |
Matthew 15:21 | And Jesus, going forth from thence, went away into the parts of Tyre and Sidon; | Then Jesus went thence, and departed into the coasts of Tyre and Sidon. | Leaving that place, Jesus withdrew into the vicinity of Tyre and Sidon. |
Matthew 15:22 | and lo, a Canaanitish woman, coming out from those borders, cried [to him] saying, Have pity on me, Lord, Son of David; my daughter is miserably possessed by a demon. | And, behold, a woman of Canaan came out of the same coasts, and cried unto him, saying, Have mercy on me, O Lord, thou Son of David; my daughter is grievously vexed with a devil. | Here a Canaanitish woman of the district came out and persistently cried out, "Sir, Son of David, pity me; my daughter is cruelly harassed by a demon." |
Matthew 15:23 | But he did not answer her a word. And his disciples came to [him] and asked him, saying, Dismiss her, for she cries after us. | But he answered her not a word. And his disciples came and besought him, saying, Send her away; for she crieth after us. | But He answered her not a word. Then the disciples interposed, and begged Him, saying, "Send her away because she keeps crying behind us." |
Matthew 15:24 | But he answering said, I have not been sent save to the lost sheep of Israel's house. | But he answered and said, I am not sent but unto the lost sheep of the house of Israel. | "I have only been sent to the lost sheep of the house of Israel," He replied. |
Matthew 15:25 | But she came and did him homage, saying, Lord, help me. | Then came she and worshipped him, saying, Lord, help me. | Then she came and threw herself at His feet and entreated Him. "O Sir, help me," she said. |
Matthew 15:26 | But he answering said, It is not well to take the bread of the children and cast it to the dogs. | But he answered and said, It is not meet to take the children's bread, and to cast it to dogs. | "It is not right," He said, "to take the children's bread and throw it to the dogs." |
Matthew 15:27 | But she said, Yea, Lord; for even the dogs eat of the crumbs which fall from the table of their masters. | And she said, Truth, Lord: yet the dogs eat of the crumbs which fall from their masters' table. | "Be it so, Sir," she said, "for even the dogs eat the scraps which fall from their masters' tables." |
Matthew 15:28 | Then Jesus answering said to her, O woman, thy faith [is] great. Be it to thee as thou desirest. And her daughter was healed from *that* hour. | Then Jesus answered and said unto her, O woman, great is thy faith: be it unto thee even as thou wilt. And her daughter was made whole from that very hour. | "O woman," replied Jesus, "great is your faith: be it done to you as you desire." And from that moment her daughter was restored to health. |
Matthew 15:29 | And Jesus, going away from thence, came towards the sea of Galilee, and he went up into the mountain and sat down there; | And Jesus departed from thence, and came nigh unto the sea of Galilee; and went up into a mountain, and sat down there. | Again, moving thence, Jesus went along by the Lake of Galilee; and ascending the hill, He sat down there. |
Matthew 15:30 | and great crowds came to him, having with them lame, blind, dumb, crippled, and many others, and they cast them at his feet, and he healed them: | And great multitudes came unto him, having with them those that were lame, blind, dumb, maimed, and many others, and cast them down at Jesus' feet; and he healed them: | Soon great crowds came to Him, bringing with them those who were crippled in feet or hands, blind or dumb, and many besides, and they hastened to lay them at His feet. And He cured them, |
Matthew 15:31 | so that the crowds wondered, seeing dumb speaking, crippled sound, lame walking, and blind seeing; and they glorified the God of Israel. | Insomuch that the multitude wondered, when they saw the dumb to speak, the maimed to be whole, the lame to walk, and the blind to see: and they glorified the God of Israel. | so that the people were amazed to see the dumb speaking, the maimed with their hands perfect, the lame walking, and the blind seeing; and they gave the glory to the God of Israel. |
Matthew 15:32 | But Jesus, having called his disciples to [him], said, I have compassion on the crowd, because they have stayed with me already three days and they have not anything they can eat, and I would not send them away fasting lest they should faint on the way. | Then Jesus called his disciples unto him, and said, I have compassion on the multitude, because they continue with me now three days, and have nothing to eat: and I will not send them away fasting, lest they faint in the way. | But Jesus called His disciples to Him and said, "My heart yearns over this mass of people, for it is now the third day that they have been with me and they have nothing to eat. I am unwilling to send them away hungry, lest they should faint on the road." |
Matthew 15:33 | And his disciples say to him, Whence should we have so many loaves in [the] wilderness as to satisfy so great a crowd? | And his disciples say unto him, Whence should we have so much bread in the wilderness, as to fill so great a multitude? | "Where can we," asked the disciples, "get bread enough in this remote place to satisfy so vast a multitude?" |
Matthew 15:34 | And Jesus says to them, How many loaves have ye? But they said, Seven, and a few small fishes. | And Jesus saith unto them, How many loaves have ye? And they said, Seven, and a few little fishes. | "How many loaves have you?" Jesus asked. "Seven," they said, "and a few small fish." |
Matthew 15:35 | And he commanded the crowds to lie down on the ground; | And he commanded the multitude to sit down on the ground. | So He bade all the people sit down on the ground, |
Matthew 15:36 | and having taken the seven loaves and the fishes, having given thanks, he broke [them] and gave [them] to his disciples, and the disciples to the crowd. | And he took the seven loaves and the fishes, and gave thanks, and brake them, and gave to his disciples, and the disciples to the multitude. | and He took the seven loaves and the fish, and after giving thanks He broke them up and then distributed them to the disciples, and they to the people. |
Matthew 15:37 | And all ate and were filled; and they took up what was over and above of the fragments seven baskets full; | And they did all eat, and were filled: and they took up of the broken meat that was left seven baskets full. | And they all ate and were satisfied. The broken portions that remained over they took up seven full hampers. |
Matthew 15:38 | but they that ate were four thousand men, besides women and children. | And they that did eat were four thousand men, beside women and children. | Those who ate were 4,000 adult men, without reckoning women and children. |
Matthew 15:39 | And, having dismissed the crowds, he went on board ship and came to the borders of Magadan. | And he sent away the multitude, and took ship, and came into the coasts of Magdala. | He then dismissed the people, went on board the boat, and came into the district of Magadan. |
