Romans 4:1What shall we say then that Abraham our father according to flesh has found?What shall we say then that Abraham our father, as pertaining to the flesh, hath found? What then shall we say that Abraham, our earthly forefather, has gained?
Romans 4:2For if Abraham has been justified on the principle of works, he has whereof to boast: but not before God;For if Abraham were justified by works, he hath whereof to glory; but not before God. For if he was held to be righteous on the ground of his actions, he has something to boast of; but not in the presence of God.
Romans 4:3for what does the scripture say? And Abraham believed God, and it was reckoned to him as righteousness.For what saith the scripture? Abraham believed God, and it was counted unto him for righteousness. For what says the Scripture? "And Abraham believed God, and this was placed to his credit as righteousness."
Romans 4:4Now to him that works the reward is not reckoned as of grace, but of debt:Now to him that worketh is the reward not reckoned of grace, but of debt. But in the case of a man who works, pay is not reckoned a favour but a debt;
Romans 4:5but to him who does not work, but believes on him who justifies the ungodly, his faith is reckoned as righteousness.But to him that worketh not, but believeth on him that justifieth the ungodly, his faith is counted for righteousness. whereas in the case of a man who pleads no actions of his own, but simply believes in Him who declares the ungodly free from guilt, his faith is placed to his credit as righteousness.
Romans 4:6Even as David also declares the blessedness of the man to whom God reckons righteousness without works:Even as David also describeth the blessedness of the man, unto whom God imputeth righteousness without works, In this way David also tells of the blessedness of the man to whose credit God places righteousness, apart from his actions.
Romans 4:7Blessed [they] whose lawlessnesses have been forgiven, and whose sins have been covered:Saying, Blessed are they whose iniquities are forgiven, and whose sins are covered. "Blessed," he says, "are those whose iniquities have been forgiven, and whose sins have been covered over.
Romans 4:8blessed [the] man to whom [the] Lord shall not at all reckon sin.Blessed is the man to whom the Lord will not impute sin. Blessed is the man of whose sin the Lord will not take account."
Romans 4:9[Does] this blessedness then [rest] on the circumcision, or also on the uncircumcision? For we say that faith has been reckoned to Abraham as righteousness.Cometh this blessedness then upon the circumcision only, or upon the uncircumcision also? for we say that faith was reckoned to Abraham for righteousness. This declaration of blessedness, then, does it come simply to the circumcised, or to the uncircumcised as well? For Abraham's faith so we affirm was placed to his credit as righteousness.
Romans 4:10How then has it been reckoned? when he was in circumcision, or in uncircumcision? Not in circumcision, but in uncircumcision.How was it then reckoned? when he was in circumcision, or in uncircumcision? Not in circumcision, but in uncircumcision. What then were the circumstances under which this took place? Was it after he had been circumcised, or before?
Romans 4:11And he received [the] sign of circumcision [as] seal of the righteousness of faith which [he had] being in uncircumcision, that he might be [the] father of all them that believe being in uncircumcision, that righteousness might be reckoned to them also;And he received the sign of circumcision, a seal of the righteousness of the faith which he had yet being uncircumcised: that he might be the father of all them that believe, though they be not circumcised; that righteousness might be imputed unto them also: Before, not after. And he received circumcision as a sign, a mark attesting the reality of the faith-righteousness which was his while still uncircumcised, that he might be the forefather of all those who believe even though they are uncircumcised in order that this righteousness might be placed to their credit;
Romans 4:12and father of circumcision, not only to those who are of [the] circumcision, but to those also who walk in the steps of the faith, during uncircumcision, of our father Abraham.And the father of circumcision to them who are not of the circumcision only, but who also walk in the steps of that faith of our father Abraham, which he had being yet uncircumcised. and the forefather of the circumcised, namely of those who not merely are circumcised, but also walk in the steps of the faith which our forefather Abraham had while he was as yet uncircumcised.
Romans 4:13For [it was] not by law that the promise was to Abraham, or to his seed, that he should be heir of [the] world, but by righteousness of faith.For the promise, that he should be the heir of the world, was not to Abraham, or to his seed, through the law, but through the righteousness of faith. Again, the promise that he should inherit the world did not come to Abraham or his posterity conditioned by Law, but by faith-righteousness.
Romans 4:14For if they which [are] of law be heirs, faith is made vain, and the promise made of no effect.For if they which are of the law be heirs, faith is made void, and the promise made of none effect: For if it is the righteous through Law who are heirs, then faith is useless and the promise counts for nothing.
Romans 4:15For law works wrath; but where no law is neither [is there] transgression.Because the law worketh wrath: for where no law is, there is no transgression. For the Law inflicts punishment; but where no Law exists, there can be no violation of Law.
Romans 4:16Therefore [it is] on the principle of faith, that [it might be] according to grace, in order to the promise being sure to all the seed, not to that only which [is] of the law, but to that also which [is] of Abraham's faith, who is father of us all,Therefore it is of faith, that it might be by grace; to the end the promise might be sure to all the seed; not to that only which is of the law, but to that also which is of the faith of Abraham; who is the father of us all, All depends on faith, and for this reason that acceptance with God might be an act of pure grace,
Romans 4:17(according as it is written, I have made thee father of many nations,) before the God whom he believed, who quickens the dead, and calls the things which be not as being;(As it is written, I have made thee a father of many nations,) before him whom he believed, even God, who quickeneth the dead, and calleth those things which be not as though they were. so that the promise should be made sure to all Abraham's true descendants; not merely to those who are righteous through the Law, but to those who are righteous through a faith like that of Abraham. Thus in the sight of God in whom he believed, who gives life to the dead and makes reference to things that do not exist, as though they did, Abraham is the forefather of all of us. As it is written, "I have appointed you to be the forefather of many nations."
Romans 4:18who against hope believed in hope to his becoming father of many nations, according to that which was spoken, So shall thy seed be:Who against hope believed in hope, that he might become the father of many nations, according to that which was spoken, So shall thy seed be. Under utterly hopeless circumstances he hopefully believed, so that he might become the forefather of many nations, in agreement with the words "Equally numerous shall your posterity be."
Romans 4:19and not being weak in faith, he considered not his own body already become dead, being about a hundred years old, and the deadening of Sarah's womb,And being not weak in faith, he considered not his own body now dead, when he was about an hundred years old, neither yet the deadness of Sara's womb: And, without growing weak in faith, he could contemplate his own vital powers which had now decayed for he was nearly 100 years old and Sarah's barrenness.
Romans 4:20and hesitated not at the promise of God through unbelief; but found strength in faith, giving glory to God;He staggered not at the promise of God through unbelief; but was strong in faith, giving glory to God; Nor did he in unbelief stagger at God's promise, but became mighty in faith, giving glory to God,
Romans 4:21and being fully persuaded that what he has promised he is able also to do;And being fully persuaded that, what he had promised, he was able also to perform. and being absolutely certain that whatever promise He is bound by He is able also to make good.
Romans 4:22wherefore also it was reckoned to him as righteousness.And therefore it was imputed to him for righteousness. For this reason also his faith was placed to his credit as righteousness.
Romans 4:23Now it was not written on his account alone that it was reckoned to him,Now it was not written for his sake alone, that it was imputed to him; Nor was the fact of its being placed to his credit put on record for his sake only;
Romans 4:24but on ours also, to whom, believing on him who has raised from among [the] dead Jesus our Lord,But for us also, to whom it shall be imputed, if we believe on him that raised up Jesus our Lord from the dead; it was for our sakes too. Faith, before long, will be placed to the credit of us also who are believers in Him who raised Jesus, our Lord, from the dead,
Romans 4:25who has been delivered for our offences and has been raised for our justification, it will be reckoned.Who was delivered for our offences, and was raised again for our justification. who was surrendered to death because of the offences we had committed, and was raised to life because of the acquittal secured for us.
