Romans 9:1I say [the] truth in Christ, I lie not, my conscience bearing witness with me in [the] Holy Spirit,I say the truth in Christ, I lie not, my conscience also bearing me witness in the Holy Ghost, I am telling you the truth as a Christian man it is no falsehood, for my conscience enlightened, as it is, by the Holy Spirit adds its testimony to mine
Romans 9:2that I have great grief and uninterrupted pain in my heart,That I have great heaviness and continual sorrow in my heart. when I declare that I have deep grief and unceasing anguish of heart.
Romans 9:3for I have wished, I myself, to be a curse from the Christ for my brethren, my kinsmen, according to flesh;For I could wish that myself were accursed from Christ for my brethren, my kinsmen according to the flesh: For I could pray to be accursed from Christ on behalf of my brethren, my human kinsfolk for such the Israelites are.
Romans 9:4who are Israelites; whose [is] the adoption, and the glory, and the covenants, and the law-giving, and the service, and the promises;Who are Israelites; to whom pertaineth the adoption, and the glory, and the covenants, and the giving of the law, and the service of God, and the promises; To them belongs recognition as God's sons, and they have His glorious Presence and the Covenants, and the giving of the Law, and the Temple service, and the ancient Promises.
Romans 9:5whose [are] the fathers; and of whom, as according to flesh, [is] the Christ, who is over all, God blessed for ever. Amen.Whose are the fathers, and of whom as concerning the flesh Christ came, who is over all, God blessed for ever. Amen. To them the Patriarchs belong, and from them in respect of His human lineage came the Christ, who is exalted above all, God blessed throughout the Ages. Amen.
Romans 9:6Not however as though the word of God had failed; for not all [are] Israel which [are] of Israel;Not as though the word of God hath taken none effect. For they are not all Israel, which are of Israel: Not however that God's word has failed; for all who have sprung from Israel do not count as Israel,
Romans 9:7nor because they are seed of Abraham [are] all children: but, In Isaac shall a seed be called to thee.Neither, because they are the seed of Abraham, are they all children: but, In Isaac shall thy seed be called. nor because they are Abraham's true children. But the promise was "Through Isaac shall your posterity be reckoned."
Romans 9:8That is, [they that are] the children of the flesh, these [are] not the children of God; but the children of the promise are reckoned as seed.That is, They which are the children of the flesh, these are not the children of God: but the children of the promise are counted for the seed. In other words, it is not the children by natural descent who count as God's children, but the children made such by the promise are regarded as Abraham's posterity.
Romans 9:9For this word [is] of promise, According to this time I will come, and there shall be a son to Sarah.For this is the word of promise, At this time will I come, and Sara shall have a son. For the words are the language of promise and run thus, "About this time next year I will come, and Sarah shall have a son."
Romans 9:10And not only [that], but Rebecca having conceived by one, Isaac our father,And not only this; but when Rebecca also had conceived by one, even by our father Isaac; Nor is that all: later on there was Rebecca too. She was soon to bear two children to her husband, our forefather Isaac
Romans 9:11[the children] indeed being not yet born, or having done anything good or worthless (that the purpose of God according to election might abide, not of works, but of him that calls),(For the children being not yet born, neither having done any good or evil, that the purpose of God according to election might stand, not of works, but of him that calleth;) and even then, though they were not then born and had not done anything either good or evil, yet in order that God's electing purpose might not be frustrated, based, as it was, not on their actions but on the will of Him who called them, she was told,
Romans 9:12it was said to her, The greater shall serve the less:It was said unto her, The elder shall serve the younger. "The elder of them will be bondservant to the younger."
Romans 9:13according as it is written, I have loved Jacob, and I have hated Esau.As it is written, Jacob have I loved, but Esau have I hated. This agrees with the other Scripture which says, "Jacob I have loved, but Esau I have hated."
Romans 9:14What shall we say then? [Is there] unrighteousness with God? Far be the thought.What shall we say then? Is there unrighteousness with God? God forbid. What then are we to infer? That there is injustice in God?
Romans 9:15For he says to Moses, I will shew mercy to whom I will shew mercy, and I will feel compassion for whom I will feel compassion.For he saith to Moses, I will have mercy on whom I will have mercy, and I will have compassion on whom I will have compassion. No, indeed; the solution is found in His words to Moses, "Wherever I show mercy it shall be nothing but mercy, and wherever I show compassion it shall be simply compassion."
Romans 9:16So then [it is] not of him that wills, nor of him that runs, but of God that shews mercy.So then it is not of him that willeth, nor of him that runneth, but of God that sheweth mercy. And from this we learn that everything is dependent not on man's will or endeavour, but upon God who has mercy. For the Scripture said to Pharaoh,
Romans 9:17For the scripture says to Pharaoh, For this very thing I have raised thee up from amongst [men], that I might thus shew in thee my power, and so that my name should be declared in all the earth.For the scripture saith unto Pharaoh, Even for this same purpose have I raised thee up, that I might shew my power in thee, and that my name might be declared throughout all the earth. "It is for this very purpose that I have lifted you so high that I may make manifest in you My power, and that My name may be proclaimed far and wide in all the earth."
Romans 9:18So then, to whom he will he shews mercy, and whom he will he hardens.Therefore hath he mercy on whom he will have mercy, and whom he will he hardeneth. This is a proof that wherever He chooses He shows mercy, and wherever he chooses He hardens the heart.
Romans 9:19Thou wilt say to me then, Why does he yet find fault? for who resists his purpose?Thou wilt say then unto me, Why doth he yet find fault? For who hath resisted his will? "Why then does God still find fault?" you will ask; "for who is resisting His will?"
Romans 9:20Aye, but thou, O man, who art *thou* that answerest again to God? Shall the thing formed say to him that has formed it, Why hast thou made me thus?Nay but, O man, who art thou that repliest against God? Shall the thing formed say to him that formed it, Why hast thou made me thus? Nay, but who are you, a mere man, that you should cavil against GOD? Shall the thing moulded say to him who moulded it, "Why have you made me thus?"
Romans 9:21Or has not the potter authority over the clay, out of the same lump to make one vessel to honour, and another to dishonour?Hath not the potter power over the clay, of the same lump to make one vessel unto honour, and another unto dishonour? Or has not the potter rightful power over the clay to make out of the same lump one vessel for more honourable and another for less honourable uses?
Romans 9:22And if God, minded to shew his wrath and to make his power known, endured with much long-suffering vessels of wrath fitted for destruction;What if God, willing to shew his wrath, and to make his power known, endured with much longsuffering the vessels of wrath fitted to destruction: And what if God, while choosing to make manifest the terrors of His anger and to show what is possible with Him, has yet borne with long-forbearing patience with the subjects of His anger who stand ready for destruction,
Romans 9:23and that he might make known the riches of his glory upon vessels of mercy, which he had before prepared for glory,And that he might make known the riches of his glory on the vessels of mercy, which he had afore prepared unto glory, in order to make known His infinite goodness towards the subjects of His mercy whom He has prepared beforehand for glory,
Romans 9:24us, whom he has also called, not only from amongst [the] Jews, but also from amongst [the] nations?Even us, whom he hath called, not of the Jews only, but also of the Gentiles? even towards us whom He has called not only from among the Jews but also from among the Gentiles?
Romans 9:25As he says also in Hosea, I will call not-my-people My people; and the-not-beloved Beloved.As he saith also in Osee, I will call them my people, which were not my people; and her beloved, which was not beloved. So also in Hosea He says, "I will call that nation My People which was not My People, and I will call her beloved who was not beloved.
Romans 9:26And it shall be, in the place where it was said to them, *Ye* [are] not my people, there shall they be called Sons of [the] living God.And it shall come to pass, that in the place where it was said unto them, Ye are not my people; there shall they be called the children of the living God. And in the place where it was said to them, `No people of Mine are you,' there shall they be called sons of the everliving God."
Romans 9:27But Esaias cries concerning Israel, Should the number of the children of Israel be as the sand of the sea, the remnant shall be saved:Esaias also crieth concerning Israel, Though the number of the children of Israel be as the sand of the sea, a remnant shall be saved: And Isaiah cries aloud concerning Israel, "Though the number of the sons of Israel be like the sands of the sea, only a remnant of them shall be saved;
Romans 9:28for [he] is bringing the matter to an end, and [cutting [it] short in righteousness; because] a cutting short of the matter will [the] Lord accomplish upon the earth.For he will finish the work, and cut it short in righteousness: because a short work will the Lord make upon the earth. for the Lord will hold a reckoning upon the earth, making it efficacious and brief."
Romans 9:29And according as Esaias said before, Unless [the] Lord of hosts had left us a seed, we had been as Sodom, and made like even as Gomorrha.And as Esaias said before, Except the Lord of Sabaoth had left us a seed, we had been as Sodoma, and been made like unto Gomorrha. Even as Isaiah says in an earlier place, "Were it not that the Lord, the God of Hosts, had left us some few descendants, we should have become like Sodom, and have come to resemble Gomorrah."
Romans 9:30What then shall we say? That [they of the] nations, who did not follow after righteousness, have attained righteousness, but [the] righteousness that is on the principle of faith.What shall we say then? That the Gentiles, which followed not after righteousness, have attained to righteousness, even the righteousness which is of faith. To what conclusion does this bring us? Why, that the Gentiles, who were not in pursuit of righteousness, have overtaken it a righteousness, however, which arises from faith;
Romans 9:31But Israel, pursuing after a law of righteousness, has not attained to [that] law.But Israel, which followed after the law of righteousness, hath not attained to the law of righteousness. while the descendants of Israel, who were in pursuit of a Law that could give righteousness, have not arrived at one.
Romans 9:32Wherefore? Because [it was] not on the principle of faith, but as of works. They have stumbled at the stumblingstone,Wherefore? Because they sought it not by faith, but as it were by the works of the law. For they stumbled at that stumblingstone; And why? Because they were pursuing a righteousness which should arise not from faith, but from what they regarded as merit. They stuck their foot against the stone which lay in their way;
Romans 9:33according as it is written, Behold, I place in Zion a stone of stumbling and rock of offence: and he that believes on him shall not be ashamed.As it is written, Behold, I lay in Sion a stumblingstone and rock of offence: and whosoever believeth on him shall not be ashamed. in agreement with the statement of Scripture, "See, I am placing on Mount Zion a stone for people to stumble at, and a rock for them to trip over, and yet he whose faith rests upon it shall never have reason to feel ashamed."
