James 3:1 | Be not many teachers, my brethren, knowing that we shall receive greater judgment. | My brethren, be not many masters, knowing that we shall receive the greater condemnation. | Let not many of you be teachers, my brothers, knowing that we will receive heavier judgment. |
James 3:2 | For we all often offend. If any one offend not in word, *he* [is] a perfect man, able to bridle the whole body too. | For in many things we offend all. If any man offend not in word, the same is a perfect man, and able also to bridle the whole body. | For in many things we all stumble. If anyone doesn't stumble in word, the same is a perfect man, able to bridle the whole body also. |
James 3:3 | Behold, we put the bits in the mouths of the horses, that they may obey us, and we turn round their whole bodies. | Behold, we put bits in the horses' mouths, that they may obey us; and we turn about their whole body. | Indeed, we put bits into the horses' mouths so that they may obey us, and we turn about their whole body. |
James 3:4 | Behold also the ships, which are so great, and driven by violent winds, are turned about by a very small rudder, wherever the pleasure of the helmsman will. | Behold also the ships, which though they be so great, and are driven of fierce winds, yet are they turned about with a very small helm, whithersoever the governor listeth. | Behold, the ships also, though they are so big and are driven by fierce winds, are yet turned about by a very small rudder, wherever the pilot desires. |
James 3:5 | Thus also the tongue is a little member, and boasts great things. See how little a fire, how large a wood it kindles! | Even so the tongue is a little member, and boasteth great things. Behold, how great a matter a little fire kindleth! | So the tongue is also a little member, and boasts great things. Behold, how much wood is kindled by how small a fire! |
James 3:6 | and the tongue [is] fire, the world of unrighteousness; the tongue is set in our members, the defiler of the whole body, and which sets fire to the course of nature, and is set on fire of hell. | And the tongue is a fire, a world of iniquity: so is the tongue among our members, that it defileth the whole body, and setteth on fire the course of nature; and it is set on fire of hell. | And the tongue is a fire. The world of iniquity among our members is the tongue, which defiles the whole body, and sets on fire the course of nature, and is set on fire by Gehenna. |
James 3:7 | For every species both of beasts and of birds, both of creeping things and of sea animals, is tamed and has been tamed by the human species; | For every kind of beasts, and of birds, and of serpents, and of things in the sea, is tamed, and hath been tamed of mankind: | For every kind of animal, bird, creeping thing, and thing in the sea, is tamed, and has been tamed by mankind. |
James 3:8 | but the tongue can no one among men tame; [it is] an unsettled evil, full of death-bringing poison. | But the tongue can no man tame; it is an unruly evil, full of deadly poison. | But nobody can tame the tongue. It is a restless evil, full of deadly poison. |
James 3:9 | Therewith bless we the Lord and Father, and therewith curse we men made after [the] likeness of God. | Therewith bless we God, even the Father; and therewith curse we men, which are made after the similitude of God. | With it we bless our God and Father, and with it we curse men, who are made in the image of God. |
James 3:10 | Out of the same mouth goes forth blessing and cursing. It is not right, my brethren, that these things should be thus. | Out of the same mouth proceedeth blessing and cursing. My brethren, these things ought not so to be. | Out of the same mouth comes forth blessing and cursing. My brothers, these things ought not to be so. |
James 3:11 | Does the fountain, out of the same opening, pour forth sweet and bitter? | Doth a fountain send forth at the same place sweet water and bitter? | Does a spring send forth from the same opening fresh and bitter water? |
James 3:12 | Can, my brethren, a fig produce olives, or a vine figs? Neither [can] salt [water] make sweet water. | Can the fig tree, my brethren, bear olive berries? either a vine, figs? so can no fountain both yield salt water and fresh. | Can a fig tree, my brothers, yield olives, or a vine figs? Thus no spring yields both salt water and fresh water. |
James 3:13 | Who [is] wise and understanding among you; let him shew out of a good conversation his works in meekness of wisdom; | Who is a wise man and endued with knowledge among you? let him shew out of a good conversation his works with meekness of wisdom. | Who is wise and understanding among you? Let him show his deeds done in gentleness of wisdom by his good life. |
James 3:14 | but if ye have bitter emulation and strife in your hearts, do not boast and lie against the truth. | But if ye have bitter envying and strife in your hearts, glory not, and lie not against the truth. | But if you have bitter jealousy and selfish ambition in your heart, don't boast and don't lie against the truth. |
James 3:15 | This is not the wisdom which comes down from above, but earthly, natural, devilish. | This wisdom descendeth not from above, but is earthly, sensual, devilish. | This wisdom is not that which comes down from above, but is earthly, sensual, and demonic. |
James 3:16 | For where emulation and strife [are], there [is] disorder and every evil thing. | For where envying and strife is, there is confusion and every evil work. | For where jealousy and selfish ambition are, there is confusion and every evil deed. |
James 3:17 | But the wisdom from above first is pure, then peaceful, gentle, yielding, full of mercy and good fruits, unquestioning, unfeigned. | But the wisdom that is from above is first pure, then peaceable, gentle, and easy to be intreated, full of mercy and good fruits, without partiality, and without hypocrisy. | But the wisdom that is from above is first pure, then peaceful, gentle, reasonable, full of mercy and good fruits, without partiality, and without hypocrisy. |
James 3:18 | But [the] fruit of righteousness in peace is sown for them that make peace. | And the fruit of righteousness is sown in peace of them that make peace. | Now the fruit of righteousness is sown in peace by those who make peace. |
