Matthew 14:1 | At that time Herod the tetrarch heard of the fame of Jesus, | At that time Herod the Tetrarch heard of the fame of Jesus, | At that time news of Jesus came to Herod the king; |
Matthew 14:2 | and said to his servants, This is John the baptist: *he* is risen from the dead, and because of this these works of power display their force in him. | And said to his servants, This is John the Baptist; he hath risen from the dead; and therefore mighty works do show forth themselves in him. | And he said to his servants, This is John the Baptist; he has come back from the dead, and so these powers are working in him. |
Matthew 14:3 | For Herod had seized John, and had bound him and put him in prison on account of Herodias the wife of Philip his brother. | For Herod had laid hold on John, and bound him, and put him in prison for the sake of Herodias, his brother Philip's wife. | For Herod had taken John and put him in prison because of Herodias, his brother Philip's wife. |
Matthew 14:4 | For John said to him, It is not lawful for thee to have her. | For John had said to him, It is not lawful for thee to have her. | Because John had said to him, It is not right for you to have her. |
Matthew 14:5 | And [while] desiring to kill him, he feared the crowd, because they held him for a prophet. | And when he would have put him to death, he feared the multitude, because they counted him as a prophet. | And he would have put him to death, but for his fear of the people, because in their eyes John was a prophet. |
Matthew 14:6 | But when Herod's birthday was celebrated, the daughter of Herodias danced before them, and pleased Herod; | But when Herod's birth-day was kept, the daughter of Herodias danced before them, and pleased Herod. | But when Herod's birthday came, the daughter of Herodias was dancing before them, and Herod was pleased with her. |
Matthew 14:7 | whereupon he promised with oath to give her whatsoever she should ask. | Upon which he promised with an oath to give her whatever she would ask. | So he gave her his word with an oath to let her have whatever she might make request for. |
Matthew 14:8 | But she, being set on by her mother, says, Give me here upon a dish the head of John the baptist. | And she, being before instructed by her mother, said, Give me here the head of John the Baptist in a dish. | And she, at her mother's suggestion, said, Give me here on a plate the head of John the Baptist. |
Matthew 14:9 | And the king was grieved; but on account of the oaths, and those lying at table with [him], he commanded [it] to be given. | And the king was sorry: nevertheless for the sake of the oath, and of them who sat with him at table, he commanded it to be given her. | And the king was sad; but because of his oaths and because of his guests, he gave the order for it to be given to her; |
Matthew 14:10 | And he sent and beheaded John in the prison; | And he sent, and beheaded John in the prison. | And he sent and had John's head cut off in the prison. |

Matthew 14:13 | And Jesus, having heard it, went away thence by ship to a desert place apart. And the crowds having heard [of it] followed him on foot from the cities. | When Jesus heard of it, he departed thence in a boat, into a desert place apart: and when the people had heard of it, they followed him on foot out of the cities. | Now when it came to the ears of Jesus, he went away from there in a boat, to a waste place by himself: and the people hearing of it, went after him on foot from the towns. |
Matthew 14:14 | And going out he saw a great crowd, and was moved with compassion about them, and healed their infirm. | And Jesus went forth, and saw a great multitude, and was moved with compassion towards them, and he healed their sick. | And he came out and saw a great number of people and he had pity on them, and made well those of them who were ill. |
Matthew 14:15 | But when even was come, his disciples came to him saying, The place is desert, and [much of] the [day] time already gone by; dismiss the crowds, that they may go into the villages and buy food for themselves. | And when it was evening, his disciples came to him, saying, This is a desert place, and the time is now past; send the multitude away, that they may go into the villages, and buy themselves victuals. | And when evening had come, the disciples came to him, saying, This place is waste land, and the time is now past; send the people away so that they may go into the towns and get themselves food. |
Matthew 14:16 | But Jesus said to them, They have no need to go: give *ye* them to eat. | But Jesus said to them, They need not depart; give ye them to eat. | But Jesus said to them, There is no need for them to go away; give them food yourselves. |
Matthew 14:17 | But they say to him, We have not here save five loaves and two fishes. | And they say to him, We have here but five loaves, and two fishes. | And they say to him, We have here but five cakes of bread and two fishes. |
Matthew 14:18 | And he said, Bring them here to me. | He said, Bring them hither to me. | And he said, Give them to me. |
Matthew 14:19 | And having commanded the crowds to recline upon the grass, having taken the five loaves and the two fishes, he looked up to heaven, and blessed: and having broken the loaves, he gave [them] to the disciples, and the disciples [gave them] to the crowds. | And he commanded the multitude to sit down on the grass, and took the five loaves, and the two fishes, and looking up to heaven, he blessed, and broke, and gave the loaves to his disciples, and the disciples to the multitude. | And he gave orders for the people to be seated on the grass; and he took the five cakes of bread and the two fishes and, looking up to heaven, he said words of blessing, and made division of the food, and gave it to the disciples, and the disciples gave it to the people. |
Matthew 14:20 | And all ate and were filled, and they took up what was over and above of fragments twelve hand-baskets full. | And they all ate, and were satisfied: and they took up of the fragments that remained twelve baskets full. | And they all took of the food and had enough: and they took up twelve baskets full of broken bits which were not used. |

Matthew 14:22 | And immediately he compelled the disciples to go on board ship, and to go on before him to the other side, until he should have dismissed the crowds. | And immediately Jesus constrained his disciples to get into a boat, and to go before him to the other side, while he sent the multitudes away. | And straight away he made the disciples get into the boat and go before him to the other side, till he had sent the people away. |

And when even was come, he was alone there, | And when he had sent the multitudes away, he ascended a mountain apart to pray: and when the evening was come, he was there alone. | And after he had sent the people away, he went up into the mountain by himself for prayer: and when evening was come, he was there by himself. |
Matthew 14:24 | but the ship was already in the middle of the sea tossed by the waves, for the wind was contrary. | But the boat was now in the midst of the sea, tossed with waves: for the wind was contrary. | But the boat was now in the middle of the sea, and was troubled by the waves: for the wind was against them. |

Matthew 14:28 | And Peter answering him said, Lord, if it be *thou*, command me to come to thee upon the waters. | And Peter answered him and said, Lord, if it is thou, bid me come to thee on the water. | And Peter, answering, said to him, Lord, if it is you, give me the order to come to you on the water. |
Matthew 14:29 | And he said, Come. And Peter, having descended from the ship, walked upon the waters to go to Jesus. | And he said, Come. And when Peter had come down out of the boat, he walked on the water, to go to Jesus. | And he said, Come. And Peter got out of the boat, and walking on the water, went to Jesus. |
Matthew 14:30 | But seeing the wind strong he was afraid; and beginning to sink he cried out, saying, Lord, save me. | But when he saw the wind boisterous, he was afraid; and beginning to sink, he cried, saying, Lord, save me. | But when he saw the wind he was in fear and, starting to go down, he gave a cry, saying, Help, Lord. |
Matthew 14:31 | And immediately Jesus stretched out his hand and caught hold of him, and says to him, O thou of little faith, why didst thou doubt? | And immediately Jesus stretched forth his hand, and caught him, and said to him, O thou of little faith, Why didst thou doubt? | And straight away Jesus put out his hand and took a grip of him, and said to him, O man of little faith, why were you in doubt? |
Matthew 14:32 | And when they had gone up into the ship, the wind fell. | And when they had come into the boat, the wind ceased. | And when they had got into the boat, the wind went down. |
Matthew 14:33 | But those in the ship came and did homage to him, saying, Truly thou art God's Son. | Then they that were in the boat came and worshiped him, saying, In truth thou art the son of God. | And those who were in the boat gave him worship, saying, Truly you are the Son of God. |
Matthew 14:34 | And having crossed over they came to the land of Gennesaret. | And when they had gone over, they came into the land of Gennesaret. | And when they had gone across, they came to land at Gennesaret. |
Matthew 14:35 | And when the men of that place recognised him, they sent to that whole country around, and they brought to him all that were ill, | And when the men of that place had knowledge of him, they sent out into all the surrounding country, and brought to him all that were diseased; | And when the men of that place had news of him, they sent into all the country round about, and took to him all who were ill, |
Matthew 14:36 | and besought him that they might only touch the hem of his garment; and as many as touched were made thoroughly well. | And besought him that they might only touch the hem of his garment: and as many as touched were restored to health. | With the request that they might only put their hands on the edge of his robe: and all those who did so were made well. |
