Acts 11:1 | And the apostles and the brethren who were in Judaea heard that the nations also had received the word of God; | And the apostles and brethren that were in Judea, heard that the Gentiles also had received the word of God. | Now the Apostles, and the brethren in various parts of Judaea, heard that the Gentiles also had received God's Message; |
Acts 11:2 | and when Peter went up to Jerusalem, they of the circumcision contended with him, | And when Peter had come to Jerusalem, they that were of the circumcision contended with him, | and, when Peter returned to Jerusalem, the champions of circumcision found fault with him. |
Acts 11:3 | saying, Thou wentest in to men uncircumcised and hast eaten with them. | Saying, Thou wentest in to men uncircumcised, and didst eat with them. | "You went into the houses of men who are not Jews," they said, "and you ate with them." |
Acts 11:4 | But Peter began and set forth [the matter] to them in order, saying, | But Peter rehearsed the matter from the beginning, and expounded it by order to them, saying, | Peter, however, explained the whole matter to them from the beginning. |
Acts 11:5 | I was in the city of Joppa praying, and in an ecstasy I saw a vision, a certain vessel descending like a great sheet, let down by four corners out of heaven, and it came even to me: | I was in the city of Joppa praying: and in a trance I saw a vision, A certain vessel descend, as it had been a great sheet, let down from heaven by four corners; and it came even to me: | "While I was in the town of Jaffa, offering prayer," he said, "in a trance I saw a vision. There descended what seemed to be an enormous sail, being let down from the sky by ropes at the four corners, and it came close to me. |
Acts 11:6 | on which having fixed mine eyes, I considered, and saw the quadrupeds of the earth, and the wild beasts, and the creeping things, and the fowls of the heaven. | Upon which when I had fastened my eyes, I considered, and saw four-footed beasts of the earth, and wild beasts, and creeping animals, and fowls of the air. | Fixing my eyes on it, I examined it closely, and saw various kinds of quadrupeds, wild beasts, reptiles and birds. |
Acts 11:7 | And I heard also a voice saying to me, Rise up, Peter, slay and eat. | And I heard a voice saying to me, Arise, Peter; slay and eat. | I also heard a voice saying to me, "`Rise, Peter, kill and eat.' |
Acts 11:8 | And I said, In no wise, Lord, for common or unclean has never entered into my mouth. | But I said, Not so, Lord: for nothing common or unclean hath at any time entered into my mouth. | "`On no account, Lord,' I replied, `for nothing unholy or impure has ever gone into my mouth.' |
Acts 11:9 | And a voice answered the second time out of heaven, What God has cleansed, do not *thou* make common. | But the voice answered me again from heaven, What God hath cleansed, that call not thou common. | "But a voice answered, speaking a second time from the sky, "`What God has purified, you must not regard as unholy.' |
Acts 11:10 | And this took place thrice, and again all was drawn up into heaven; | And this was done three times: and all were drawn up again into heaven. | "This was said three times, and then everything was drawn up again out of sight. |
Acts 11:11 | and lo, immediately three men were at the house in which I was, sent to me from Caesarea. | And behold, immediately there were three men already come to the house where I was, sent from Cesarea to me. | "Now at that very moment three men came to the house where we were, having been sent from Caesarea to find me. |
Acts 11:12 | And the Spirit said to me to go with them, nothing doubting. And there went with me these six brethren also, and we entered into the house of the man, | And the Spirit bade me go with them, nothing doubting. Moreover, these six brethren accompanied me, and we entered into the man's house: | And the Spirit told me to accompany them without any misgivings. There also went with me these six brethren who are now present, and we reached the Centurion's house. |
Acts 11:13 | and he related to us how he had seen the angel in his house, standing and saying [to him], Send [men] to Joppa and fetch Simon, who is surnamed Peter, | And he showed us how he had seen an angel in his house, who stood and said to him, Send men to Joppa, and call for Simon, whose surname is Peter; | Then he described to us how he had seen the angel come and enter his house and say, "`Send to Jaffa and fetch Simon, surnamed Peter. |
Acts 11:14 | who shall speak words to thee whereby *thou* shalt be saved, thou and all thy house. | Who shall tell thee words, by which thou and all thy house shall be saved. | He will teach you truths by which you and all your family will be saved.'" |
Acts 11:15 | And as I began to speak, the Holy Spirit fell upon them even as upon us also at the beginning. | And as I began to speak, the Holy Spirit fell on them, as on us at the beginning. | "And," said Peter, "no sooner had I begun to speak than the Holy Spirit fell upon them, just as He fell upon us at the first. |
Acts 11:16 | And I remembered the word of the Lord, how he said, John baptised with water, but *ye* shall be baptised with [the] Holy Spirit. | Then I remembered the word of the Lord, how he said, John indeed baptized with water; but ye shall be baptized with the Holy Spirit. | Then I remembered the Lord's words, how He used to say, "`John baptized with water, but you shall be baptized in the Holy Spirit.' |
Acts 11:17 | If then God has given them the same gift as also to us when we had believed on the Lord Jesus Christ, who indeed was *I* to be able to forbid God? | Forasmuch then as God gave them the like gift as he did to us, who believed on the Lord Jesus Christ, what was I that I could withstand God? | "If therefore God gave them the same gift as He gave us when we first believed on the Lord Jesus Christ, why, who was I to be able to thwart God?" |
Acts 11:18 | And when they heard these things they held their peace, and glorified God, saying, Then indeed God has to the nations also granted repentance to life. | When they heard these things, they held their peace, and glorified God, saying, Then hath God also to the Gentiles granted repentance to life. | This statement of Peter's silenced his opponents. They extolled the goodness of God, and said, "So, then, to the Gentiles also God has given the repentance which leads to Life." |
Acts 11:19 | They then who had been scattered abroad through the tribulation that took place on the occasion of Stephen, passed through [the country] to Phoenicia and Cyprus and Antioch, speaking the word to no one but to Jews alone. | Now they who were dispersed upon the persecution that arose about Stephen traveled as far as Phenice, and Cyprus, and Antioch, preaching the word to none but to the Jews only. | Those, however, who had been driven in various directions by the persecution which broke out on account of Stephen made their way to Phoenicia, Cyprus and Antioch, delivering the Message to none but Jews. |
Acts 11:20 | But there were certain of them, Cyprians and Cyrenians, who entering into Antioch spoke to the Greeks also, announcing the glad tidings of the Lord Jesus. | And some of them were men of Cyprus and Cyrene, who when they had come to Antioch, spoke to the Grecians, preaching the Lord Jesus. | But some of them were Cyprians and Cyrenaeans, who, on coming to Antioch, spoke to the Greeks also and told them the Good News concerning the Lord Jesus. |
Acts 11:21 | And [the] Lord's hand was with them, and a great number believed and turned to the Lord. | And the hand of the Lord was with them: and a great number believed, and turned to the Lord. | The power of the Lord was with them, and there were a vast number who believed and turned to the Lord. |
Acts 11:22 | And the report concerning them reached the ears of the assembly which was in Jerusalem, and they sent out Barnabas to go through as far as Antioch: | Then tidings of these things came to the ears of the church which was in Jerusalem: and they sent forth Barnabas, that he should go as far as Antioch. | When tidings of this reached the ears of the Church in Jerusalem, they sent Barnabas as far as Antioch. |
Acts 11:23 | who, having arrived and seeing the grace of God, rejoiced, and exhorted all with purpose of heart to abide with the Lord; | Who, when he came, and had seen the grace of God, was glad, and exhorted them all that with purpose of heart they would cleave to the Lord. | On getting there he was delighted to see the grace which God had bestowed; and he encouraged them all to remain, with fixed resolve, faithful to the Lord. |
Acts 11:24 | for he was a good man and full of [the] Holy Spirit and of faith; and a large crowd [of people] were added to the Lord. | For he was a good man, and full of the Holy Spirit, and of faith: and many people were added to the Lord. | For he was a good man, and was full of the Holy Spirit and of faith; and the number of believers in the Lord greatly increased. |
Acts 11:25 | And he went away to Tarsus to seek out Saul. | Then Barnabas departed to Tarsus, to seek Saul: | Then Barnabas paid a visit to Tarsus to try to find Saul. |
Acts 11:26 | And having found [him], he brought him to Antioch. And so it was with them that for a whole year they were gathered together in the assembly and taught a large crowd: and the disciples were first called Christians in Antioch. | And when he had found him, he brought him to Antioch. And it came to pass, that a whole year they assembled themselves with the church, and taught many people. And the disciples were first called Christians in Antioch. | He succeeded, and brought him to Antioch; and for a whole year they attended the meetings of the Church, and taught a large number of people. And it was in Antioch that the disciples first received the name of `Christians.' |
Acts 11:27 | Now in these days prophets went down from Jerusalem to Antioch; | And in these days came prophets from Jerusalem to Antioch. | At that time certain Prophets came down from Jerusalem to Antioch, |
Acts 11:28 | and one from among them, by name Agabus, rose up and signified by the Spirit that there was going to be a great famine over all the inhabited earth, which also came to pass under Claudius. | And there stood up one of them named Agabus, and signified by the Spirit that there should be great dearth throughout all the world: which came to pass in the days of Claudius Cesar. | one of whom, named Agabus, being instructed by the Spirit, publicly predicted the speedy coming of a great famine throughout the world. (It came in the reign of Claudius.) |
Acts 11:29 | And they determined, according as any one of the disciples was well off, each of them to send to the brethren who dwelt in Judaea, to minister [to them]; | Then the disciples, every man according to his ability, determined to send relief to the brethren who dwelt in Judea. | So the disciples decided to send relief, every one in proportion to his means, to the brethren living in Judaea. |
Acts 11:30 | which also they did, sending it to the elders by the hand of Barnabas and Saul. | Which also they did, and sent it to the elders by the hands of Barnabas and Saul. | This they did, forwarding their contributions to the Elders by Barnabas and Saul. |
