Matthew 13:1 | And that [same] day Jesus went out from the house and sat down by the sea. | The same day Jesus went out of the house, and sat by the sea side. | That same day Jesus had left the house and was sitting on the shore of the Lake, |
Matthew 13:2 | And great crowds were gathered together to him, so that going on board ship himself he sat down, and the whole crowd stood on the shore. | And great multitudes were gathered to him, so that he went into a boat, and sat down; and the whole multitude stood on the shore. | when a vast multitude of people crowded round Him. He therefore went on board a boat and sat there, while all the people stood on the shore. |
Matthew 13:3 | And he spoke to them many things in parables, saying, Behold, the sower went out to sow: | And he spoke many things to them in parables, saying, Behold, a sower went forth to sow; | He then spoke many things to them in figurative language. "The sower goes out," He said, "to sow. |
Matthew 13:4 | and as he sowed, some [grains] fell along the way, and the birds came and devoured them; | And when he sowed, some seeds fell by the way side, and the fowls came and devoured them: | As he sows, some of the seed falls by the way-side, and the birds come and peck it up. |
Matthew 13:5 | and others fell upon the rocky places where they had not much earth, and immediately they sprang up out of [the ground] because of not having [any] depth of earth, | Some fell upon stony places, where they had not much earth: and forthwith they sprung up, because they had no deepness of earth: | Some falls on rocky ground, where it has but scanty soil. It quickly shows itself above ground, because it has no depth of earth; |
Matthew 13:6 | but when the sun rose they were burned up, and because of not having [any] root were dried up; | And when the sun had risen, they were scorched; and because they had not root, they withered. | but when the sun is risen, it is scorched by the heat, and through having no root it withers up. |
Matthew 13:7 | and others fell upon the thorns, and the thorns grew up and choked them; | And some fell among thorns; and the thorns sprung up, and choked them: | Some falls among the thorns; but the thorns spring up and stifle it. |
Matthew 13:8 | and others fell upon the good ground, and produced fruit, one a hundred, one sixty, and one thirty. | But others fell into good ground, and brought forth fruit, some a hundred-fold, some sixty-fold, some thirty-fold. | But a portion falls upon good ground, and gives a return, some a hundred for one, some sixty, some thirty. |
Matthew 13:9 | He that has ears, let him hear. | Who hath ears to hear, let him hear. | Listen, every one who has ears!" |
Matthew 13:10 | And the disciples came up and said to him, Why speakest thou to them in parables? | And the disciples came, and said to him, Why speakest thou to them in parables? | (And His disciples came and asked Him, "Why do you speak to them in figurative language?" |
Matthew 13:11 | And he answering said to them, Because to you it is given to know the mysteries of the kingdom of the heavens, but to them it is not given; | He answered and said to them, Because it is given to you to know the mysteries of the kingdom of heaven, but to them it is not given. | "Because," He replied, "while to you it is granted to know the secrets of the Kingdom of the Heavens, to them it is not. |
Matthew 13:12 | for whoever has, to him shall be given, and he shall be caused to be in abundance; but he who has not, even what he has shall be taken away from him. | For whoever hath, to him shall be given, and he shall have more abundance: but whoever hath not, from him shall be taken away even that which he hath. | For whoever has, to him more shall be given, and he shall have abundance; but whoever has not, from him even what he has shall be taken away. |
Matthew 13:13 | For this cause I speak to them in parables, because seeing they do not see, and hearing they do not hear nor understand; | Therefore I speak to them in parables: because they seeing see not; and hearing they hear not, neither do they understand. | I speak to them in figurative language for this reason, that while looking they do not see, and while hearing they neither hear nor understand. |
Matthew 13:14 | and in them is filled up the prophecy of Esaias, which says, Hearing ye shall hear and shall not understand, and beholding ye shall behold and not see; | And in them is fulfilled the prophecy of Isaiah, which saith, By hearing ye shall hear, and shall not understand; and seeing ye shall see, and shall not perceive: | And in regard to them the prophecy of Isaiah is receiving signal fulfilment: "`You will hear and hear and by no means understand, and you will look and look and by no means see. |
Matthew 13:15 | for the heart of this people has grown fat, and they have heard heavily with their ears, and they have closed their eyes as asleep, lest they should see with the eyes, and hear with the ears, and understand with the heart, and should be converted, and I should heal them. | For this people's heart is become gross, and their ears are dull of hearing, and their eyes they have closed; lest at any time they should see with their eyes, and hear with their ears, and should understand with their heart, and should be converted, and I should heal them. | For this people's mind is stupefied, their hearing has become dull, and their eyes they have closed; to prevent their ever seeing with their eyes, or hearing with their ears, or understanding with their minds, and turning back, so that I might heal them.' |
Matthew 13:16 | But blessed are *your* eyes because they see, and your ears because they hear; | But blessed are your eyes, for they see: and your ears, for they hear. | "But as for you, blessed are your eyes, for they see, and your ears, for they hear. |
Matthew 13:17 | for verily I say unto you, that many prophets and righteous [men] have desired to see the things which ye behold and did not see [them], and to hear the things which ye hear and did not hear [them]. | For verily I say to you, That many prophets and righteous men have desired to see the things which ye see, and have not seen them; and to hear the things which ye hear, and have not heard them. | For I solemnly tell you that many Prophets and holy men have longed to see the sights you see, and have not seen them, and to hear the words you hear, and have not heard them. |
Matthew 13:18 | *Ye*, therefore, hear the parable of the sower. | Hear ye therefore the parable of the sower. | "To you then I will explain the parable of the Sower. |
Matthew 13:19 | From every one who hears the word of the kingdom and does not understand [it], the wicked one comes and catches away what was sown in his heart: this is he that is sown by the wayside. | When any one heareth the word of the kingdom, and understandeth it not, then cometh the wicked one, and catcheth away that which was sown in his heart. This is he who received seed by the way side. | When a man hears the Message concerning the Kingdom and does not understand it, the Evil one comes and catches away what has been sown in his heart. This is he who has received the seed by the road-side. |
Matthew 13:20 | But he that is sown on the rocky places this is he who hears the word and immediately receives it with joy, | But he that received the seed into stony places, the same is he that heareth the word, and immediately with joy receiveth it; | He who has received the seed on the rocky ground is the man who hears the Message and immediately receives it with joy. |
Matthew 13:21 | but has no root in himself, but is for a time only; and when tribulation or persecution happens on account of the word, he is immediately offended. | Yet he hath not root in himself, but endureth for a while: for when tribulation or persecution ariseth because of the word, forthwith he is offended. | It has struck no root, however, within him. He continues for a time, but when suffering comes, or persecution, because of the Message, he at once stumbles and falls. |
Matthew 13:22 | And he that is sown among the thorns this is he who hears the word, and the anxious care of this life, and the deceit of riches choke the word, and he becomes unfruitful. | He also that received seed among the thorns is he that heareth the word; and the care of this world, and the deceitfulness of riches choke the word, and he becometh unfruitful. | He who has received the seed among the thorns is the man who hears the Message, but the cares of the present age and the delusions of riches quite stifle the Message, and it becomes unfruitful. |
Matthew 13:23 | But he that is sown upon the good ground this is he who hears and understands the word, who bears fruit also, and produces, one a hundred, one sixty, and one thirty. | But he that receiveth seed into the good ground is he that heareth the word, and understandeth it; who also beareth fruit, and bringeth forth, some a hundred fold, some sixty, some thirty. | But he who has received the seed on good ground is he who hears and understands. Such hearers give a return, and yield one a hundred for one, another sixty, another thirty.") |
Matthew 13:24 | Another parable set he before them, saying, The kingdom of the heavens has become like a man sowing good seed in his field; | Another parable he proposed to them, saying, The kingdom of heaven is likened to a man who sowed good seed in his field: | Another parable He put before them. "The Kingdom of the Heavens," He said, "may be compared to a man who has sown good seed in his field, |
Matthew 13:25 | but while men slept, his enemy came and sowed darnel amongst the wheat, and went away. | But while men slept, his enemy came and sowed tares among the wheat, and departed. | but during the night his enemy comes, and over the first seed he sows darnel among the wheat, and goes away. |
Matthew 13:26 | But when the blade shot up and produced fruit, then appeared the darnel also. | But when the blade had sprung up, and brought forth fruit, then appeared the tares also. | But when the blade shoots up and the grain is formed, then appears the darnel also. |
Matthew 13:27 | And the bondmen of the householder came up and said to him, Sir, hast thou not sown good seed in thy field? whence then has it darnel? | So the servants of the householder came and said to him, Sir, didst thou not sow good seed in thy field? from whence then hath it tares? | "So the farmer's men come and ask him, "`Sir, was it not good seed that you sowed on your land? Where then does the darnel come from?' |
Matthew 13:28 | And he said to them, A man [that is] an enemy has done this. And the bondmen said to him, Wilt thou then that we should go and gather it [up]? | He said to them, An enemy hath done this. The servants said to him, Wilt thou then that we go and gather them? | "`Some enemy has done this,' he said. "`Shall we go, and collect it?' the men inquire. |
Matthew 13:29 | But he said, No; lest [in] gathering the darnel ye should root up the wheat with it. | But he said, No; lest while ye gather the tares, ye root up also the wheat with them. | "`No,' he replied, `for fear that while collecting the darnel you should at the same time root up the wheat with it. |
Matthew 13:30 | Suffer both to grow together unto the harvest, and in time of the harvest I will say to the harvestmen, Gather first the darnel, and bind it into bundles to burn it; but the wheat bring together into my granary. | Let both grow together until the harvest: and in the time of harvest I will say to the reapers, Gather ye first the tares, and bind them in bundles to burn them: but gather the wheat into my barn. | Leave both to grow together until the harvest, and at harvest-time I will direct the reapers, Collect the darnel first, and make it up into bundles to burn it, but bring all the wheat into my barn.'" |
Matthew 13:31 | Another parable set he before them, saying, The kingdom of the heavens is like a grain of mustard [seed] which a man took and sowed in his field; | Another parable he proposed to them, saying, The kingdom of heaven is like a grain of mustard-seed, which a man took, and sowed in his field: | Another parable He put before them. "The Kingdom of the Heavens," He said, "is like a mustard-seed, which a man takes and sows in his ground. |
Matthew 13:32 | which is less indeed than all seeds, but when it is grown is greater than herbs, and becomes a tree, so that the birds of heaven come and roost in its branches. | Which indeed is the least of all seeds: but when it is grown, it is the greatest among herbs, and becometh a tree, so that the birds of the air come and lodge on its branches. | It is the smallest of all seeds, and yet when full-grown it is larger than any herb and forms a tree, so that the birds come and build in its branches." |
Matthew 13:33 | He spoke another parable to them: The kingdom of the heavens is like leaven, which a woman took and hid in three measures of meal until it had been all leavened. | Another parable he spoke to them; The kingdom of heaven is like leaven, which a woman took, and hid in three measures of meal, till the whole was leavened. | Another parable He spoke to them. "The Kingdom of the Heavens," He said, "is like yeast which a woman takes and buries in a bushel of flour, for it to work there till the whole mass has risen." |
Matthew 13:34 | All these things Jesus spoke to the crowds in parables, and without a parable he did not speak to them, | All these things Jesus spoke to the multitude in parables; and without a parable he spoke not to them: | All this Jesus spoke to the people in figurative language, and except in figurative language He spoke nothing to them, |
Matthew 13:35 | so that that should be fulfilled which was spoken through the prophet, saying, I will open my mouth in parables; I will utter things hidden from [the] world's foundation. | That it might be fulfilled which was spoken by the prophet, saying, I will open my mouth in parables; I will utter things which have been kept secret from the foundation of the world. | in fulfilment of the saying of the Prophet, "I will open my mouth in figurative language, I will utter things kept hidden since the creation of all things." |
Matthew 13:36 | Then, having dismissed the crowds, he went into the house; and his disciples came to him, saying, Expound to us the parable of the darnel of the field. | Then Jesus sent the multitude away, and went into the house: and his disciples came to him, saying, Declare to us the parable of the tares of the field. | When He had dismissed the people and had returned to the house, His disciples came to Him with the request, "Explain to us the parable of the darnel sown in the field." |
Matthew 13:37 | But he answering said, He that sows the good seed is the Son of man, | He answered and said to them, He that soweth the good seed is the Son of man; | "The sower of the good seed," He replied, "is the Son of Man; |
Matthew 13:38 | and the field is the world; and the good seed, these are the sons of the kingdom, but the darnel are the sons of the evil [one]; | The field is the world; the good seed are the children of the kingdom; but the tares are the children of the wicked one; | the field is the world; the good seed these are the sons of the Kingdom; the darnel, the sons of the Evil one. |
Matthew 13:39 | and the enemy who has sowed it is the devil; and the harvest is [the] completion of [the] age, and the harvestmen are angels. | The enemy that sowed them is the devil; the harvest is the end of the world; and the reapers are the angels. | The enemy who sows the darnel is *the Devil*; the harvest is the Close of the Age; the reapers are the angels. |
Matthew 13:40 | As then the darnel is gathered and is burned in the fire, thus it shall be in the completion of the age. | As therefore the tares are gathered and burned in the fire; so shall it be in the end of this world. | As then the darnel is collected together and burnt up with fire, so will it be at the Close of the Age. |
Matthew 13:41 | The Son of man shall send his angels, and they shall gather out of his kingdom all offences, and those that practise lawlessness; | The Son of man shall send forth his angels, and they shall gather out of his kingdom all things that offend, and them who do iniquity; | The Son of Man will commission His angels, and they will gather out of His Kingdom all causes of sin and all who violate His laws; |
Matthew 13:42 | and they shall cast them into the furnace of fire; there shall be the weeping and the gnashing of teeth. | And shall cast them into a furnace of fire: there shall be wailing and gnashing of teeth. | and these they will throw into the fiery furnace. There will be the weeping aloud and the gnashing of teeth. |
Matthew 13:43 | Then the righteous shall shine forth as the sun in the kingdom of their Father. He that has ears, let him hear. | Then shall the righteous shine as the sun in the kingdom of their Father. Who hath ears to hear, let him hear. | Then will the righteous shine out like the sun in their Father's Kingdom. Listen, every one who has ears! |
Matthew 13:44 | The kingdom of the heavens is like a treasure hid in the field, which a man having found has hid, and for the joy of it goes and sells all whatever he has, and buys that field. | Again, the kingdom of heaven is like treasure hid in a field; which, when a man hath found, he hideth, and for joy thereof goeth and selleth all that he hath, and buyeth that field. | "The Kingdom of the Heavens is like treasure buried in the open country, which a man finds, but buries again, and, in his joy about it, goes and sells all he has and buys that piece of ground. |
Matthew 13:45 | Again, the kingdom of the heavens is like a merchant seeking beautiful pearls; | Again, the kingdom of heaven is like a merchant seeking goodly pearls: | "Again the Kingdom of the Heavens is like a jewel merchant who is in quest of choice pearls. |
Matthew 13:46 | and having found one pearl of great value, he went and sold all whatever he had and bought it. | Who, when he had found one pearl of great price, went and sold all that he had, and bought it. | He finds one most costly pearl; he goes away; and though it costs all he has, he buys it. |
Matthew 13:47 | Again, the kingdom of the heavens is like a seine which has been cast into the sea, and which has gathered together of every kind, | Again, the kingdom of heaven is like a net, that was cast into the sea, and gathered of every kind: | "Again the Kingdom of the Heavens is like a draw-net let down into the sea, which encloses fish of all sorts. |
Matthew 13:48 | which, when it has been filled, having drawn up on the shore and sat down, they gathered the good into vessels and cast the worthless out. | Which, when it was full, they drew to the shore, and sat down, and gathered the good into vessels, but cast away the bad. | When full, they haul it up on the beach, and sit down and collect the good fish in baskets, while the worthless they throw away. |
Matthew 13:49 | Thus shall it be in the completion of the age: the angels shall go forth and sever the wicked from the midst of the just, | So shall it be at the end of the world: the angels shall come forth, and sever the wicked from among the just, | So will it be at the Close of the Age. The angels will go forth and separate the wicked from among the righteous, |
Matthew 13:50 | and shall cast them into the furnace of fire; there shall be the weeping and the gnashing of teeth. | And shall cast them into the furnace of fire: there shall be wailing and gnashing of teeth. | and will throw them into the fiery furnace. There will be the weeping aloud and the gnashing of teeth." |
Matthew 13:51 | Jesus says to them, Have ye understood all these things? They say to him, Yea, [Lord]. | Jesus saith to them, Have ye understood all these things? They say to him, Yes, Lord. | "Have you understood all this?" He asked. "Yes," they said. |
Matthew 13:52 | And he said to them, For this reason every scribe discipled to the kingdom of the heavens is like a man [that is] a householder who brings out of his treasure things new and old. | Then said he to them, Therefore every scribe who is instructed to the kingdom of heaven, is like a man that is a householder, who bringeth forth out of his treasure things new and old. | "Therefore," He said, "remember that every Scribe well trained for the Kingdom of the Heavens is like a householder who brings out of his storehouse new things and old." |
Matthew 13:53 | And it came to pass when Jesus had finished these parables he withdrew thence. | And it came to pass, that when Jesus had finished these parables, he departed thence. | Jesus concluded this series of parables and then departed. |
Matthew 13:54 | And having come into his own country, he taught them in their synagogue, so that they were astonished, and said, Whence has this [man] this wisdom and these works of power? | And when he had come into his own country, he taught them in their synagogue, so that they were astonished, and said, Whence hath this man this wisdom, and these mighty works? | And He came into His own country and proceeded to teach in their synagogue, so that they were filled with astonishment and exclaimed, "Where did he obtain such wisdom, and these wondrous powers? |
Matthew 13:55 | Is not this the son of the carpenter? Is not his mother called Mary, and his brethren James, and Joseph, and Simon, and Judas? | Is not this the carpenter's son? is not his mother called Mary? and his brethren, James, and Joses, and Simon, and Judas? | Is not this the carpenter's son? Is not his mother called Mary? And are not his brothers, James, Joseph, Simon and Judah? |
Matthew 13:56 | And his sisters, are they not all with us? Whence then has this [man] all these things? | And his sisters, are they not all with us? Whence then hath this man all these things? | And his sisters are they not all living here among us? Where then did he get all this?" |
Matthew 13:57 | And they were offended in him. And Jesus said to them, A prophet is not without honour, unless in his country and in his house. | And they were offended in him. But Jesus said to them, A prophet is not without honor, save in his own country, and in his own house. | So they turned angrily away from Him. But Jesus said to them, "There is no prophet left without honour except in his own country and among his own family." |
Matthew 13:58 | And he did not there many works of power, because of their unbelief. | And he did not many mighty works there, because of their unbelief. | And He performed but few mighty deeds there because of their want of faith. |
