2nd-Peter 2:1 | But there were false prophets also among the people, as there shall be also among you false teachers, who shall bring in by the bye destructive heresies, and deny the master that bought them, bringing upon themselves swift destruction; | But there were false prophets also among the people, even as there will be false teachers among you, who will privately bring in damnable heresies, even denying the Lord that bought them, and bring upon themselves swift destruction. | But there also arose false prophets among the people, as among you also there will be false teachers, who will secretly bring in destructive heresies, denying even the Master who bought them, bringing on themselves swift destruction. |
2nd-Peter 2:2 | and many shall follow their dissolute ways, through whom the way of the truth shall be blasphemed. | And many will follow their pernicious ways; by reason of whom the way of truth will be evil spoken of. | Many will follow their destructive ways, and as a result, the way of the truth will be maligned. |
2nd-Peter 2:3 | And through covetousness, with well-turned words, will they make merchandise of you: for whom judgment of old is not idle, and their destruction slumbers not. | And through covetousness they will with feigned words make merchandise of you: whose judgment now of a long time lingereth not, and their damnation slumbereth not. | In covetousness will they exploit you with deceptive words: whose sentence now from of old doesn't linger, and their destruction will not slumber. |
2nd-Peter 2:4 | For if God spared not [the] angels who had sinned, but having cast them down to the deepest pit of gloom has delivered them to chains of darkness [to be] kept for judgment; | For if God spared not the angels that sinned, but cast them down to hell, and delivered them into chains of darkness, to be reserved to judgment; | For if God didn't spare angels when they sinned, but cast them down to Tartarus, and committed them to pits of darkness, to be reserved to judgment; |
2nd-Peter 2:5 | and spared not [the] old world, but preserved Noe, [the] eighth, a preacher of righteousness, having brought in [the] flood upon [the] world of [the] ungodly; | And spared not the old world, but saved Noah the eighth person, a preacher of righteousness, bringing the flood upon the world of the ungodly; | and didn't spare the ancient world, but preserved Noah with seven others, a preacher of righteousness, when he brought a flood on the world of the ungodly; |
2nd-Peter 2:6 | and having reduced [the] cities of Sodom and Gomorrha to ashes, condemned [them] with an overthrow, setting [them as] an example to those that should [afterwards] live an ungodly life; | And turning the cities of Sodom and Gomorrah into ashes, condemned them with an overthrow, making them an example to those that afterwards should live ungodly lives. | and turning the cities of Sodom and Gomorrah into ashes, condemned them to destruction, having made them an example to those who would live ungodly; |
2nd-Peter 2:7 | and saved righteous Lot, distressed with the abandoned conversation of the godless, | And delivered just Lot, grieved with the habitual lewdness of the wicked: | and delivered righteous Lot, very distressed by the lustful life of the wicked |
2nd-Peter 2:8 | (for the righteous man through seeing and hearing, dwelling among them, tormented [his] righteous soul day after day with [their] lawless works,) | (For that righteous man dwelling among them, in seeing and hearing, grieved his righteous soul from day to day with their unlawful deeds;) | (for that righteous man dwelling among them, in seeing and hearing, tormented his righteous soul from day to day with lawless deeds): |
2nd-Peter 2:9 | [the] Lord knows [how] to deliver the godly out of trial, and to keep [the] unjust to [the] day of judgment [to be] punished; | The Lord knoweth how to deliver the godly out of temptations, and to reserve the unjust to the day of judgment to be punished: | the Lord knows how to deliver the godly out of temptation, and to keep the unrighteous under punishment to the day of judgment; |
2nd-Peter 2:10 | and specially those who walk after the flesh in [the] lust of uncleanness, and despise lordship. Bold [are they], self-willed; they do not fear speaking injuriously of dignities: | But chiefly them that walk after the flesh in the lust of uncleanness, and despise government. Presumptuous are they, self-willed; they are not afraid to speak evil of dignities. | but chiefly those who walk after the flesh in the lust of defilement, and despise authority. Daring, self-willed, they are not afraid to speak evil of dignitaries; |
2nd-Peter 2:11 | when angels, who are greater in might and power, do not bring against them, before the Lord, an injurious charge. | Whereas angels, who are greater in power and might, bring not railing accusation against them before the Lord. | whereas angels, though greater in might and power, don't bring a railing judgment against them before the Lord. |
2nd-Peter 2:12 | But these, as natural animals without reason, made to be caught and destroyed, speaking injuriously in things they are ignorant of, shall also perish in their own corruption, | But these, as natural brute beasts, made to be taken and destroyed, speak evil of the things that they understand not; and shall utterly perish in their own corruption: | But these, as creatures without reason, born mere animals to be taken and destroyed, speaking evil in matters about which they are ignorant, will in their destroying surely be destroyed, |
2nd-Peter 2:13 | receiving [the] reward of unrighteousness; accounting ephemeral indulgence pleasure; spots and blemishes, rioting in their own deceits, feasting with you; | And shall receive the reward of unrighteousness, as they that count it pleasure to riot in the day-time. Spots they are and blemishes, sporting themselves with their own deceivings while they feast with you; | receiving the wages of unrighteousness; people who count it pleasure to revel in the day-time, spots and blemishes, reveling in their deceit while they feast with you; |
2nd-Peter 2:14 | having eyes full of adultery, and that cease not from sin, alluring unestablished souls; having a heart practised in covetousness, children of curse; | Having eyes full of adultery, and that cannot cease from sin; beguiling unstable souls: they have a heart exercised with covetous practices; cursed children: | having eyes full of adultery, and who can't cease from sin; enticing unsettled souls; having a heart trained in greed; children of cursing; |
2nd-Peter 2:15 | having left [the] straight way they have gone astray, having followed in the path of Balaam [the son] of Bosor, who loved [the] reward of unrighteousness; | Who have forsaken the right way, and gone astray, following the way of Balaam the son of Bosor, who loved the wages of unrighteousness; | forsaking the right way, they went astray, having followed the way of Balaam the son of Beor, who loved the wages of wrong-doing; |
2nd-Peter 2:16 | but had reproof of his own wickedness [the] dumb ass speaking with man's voice forbad the folly of the prophet. | But was rebuked for his iniquity: the dumb ass speaking with man's voice, forbad the madness of the prophet. | but he was rebuked for his own disobedience. A mute donkey spoke with man's voice and stopped the madness of the prophet. |
2nd-Peter 2:17 | These are springs without water, and mists driven by storm, to whom the gloom of darkness is reserved [for ever]. | These are wells without water, clouds that are carried with a tempest; to whom the mist of darkness is reserved for ever. | These are wells without water, clouds driven by a storm; for whom the blackness of darkness has been reserved forever. |
2nd-Peter 2:18 | For [while] speaking great highflown words of vanity, they allure with [the] lusts of [the] flesh, by dissoluteness, those who have just fled those who walk in error, | For when they speak great swelling words of vanity, they allure through the lusts of the flesh, through much wantonness, those that had quite escaped from them who live in error. | For, uttering great swelling words of emptiness, they entice in the lusts of the flesh, by licentiousness, those who are indeed escaping from those who live in error; |
2nd-Peter 2:19 | promising them liberty, while they themselves are slaves of corruption; for by whom a man is subdued, by him is he also brought into slavery. | While they promise them liberty, they themselves are the servants of corruption: for by whom a man is overcome, by the same is he brought into bondage. | promising them liberty, while they themselves are bondservants of corruption; for by whom a man is overcome, by the same is he also brought into bondage. |
2nd-Peter 2:20 | For if after having escaped the pollutions of the world through [the] knowledge of the Lord and Saviour Jesus Christ, again entangled, they are subdued by these, their last state is worse than the first. | For if after they have escaped the pollutions of the world through the knowledge of the Lord and Savior Jesus Christ, they are again entangled in them, and overcome, the latter end is worse with them than the beginning. | For if, after they have escaped the defilement of the world through the knowledge of the Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ, they are again entangled therein and overcome, the last state has become worse with them than the first. |
2nd-Peter 2:21 | For it were better for them not to have known the way of righteousness, than having known [it] to turn back from the holy commandment delivered to them. | For it had been better for them not to have known the way of righteousness, than, after they have known it, to turn from the holy commandment delivered to them. | For it would be better for them not to have known the way of righteousness, than, after knowing it, to turn back from the holy commandment delivered to them. |
2nd-Peter 2:22 | But that [word] of the true proverb has happened to them: [The] dog [has] turned back to his own vomit; and, [The] washed sow to [her] rolling in mud. | But it hath happened to them according to the true proverb, The dog is turned to his own vomit again; and, The sow that was washed, to her wallowing in the mire. | But it has happened to them according to the true proverb, "The dog turns to his own vomit again," and "the sow that had washed to wallowing in the mire." |
