Luke 23:1And the whole multitude of them, rising up, led him to Pilate. Then the whole assembly rose and brought Him to Pilate, and began to accuse Him.And they all went and took him before Pilate.
Luke 23:2And they began to accuse him, saying, We have found this [man] perverting our nation, and forbidding to give tribute to Caesar, saying that he himself is Christ, a king."We have found this man," they said, "an agitator among our nation, forbidding the payment of tribute to Caesar, and claiming to be himself an anointed king."And they made statements against him, saying, This man has to our knowledge been teaching our nation to do wrong, and not to make payment of taxes to Caesar, even saying that he himself is Christ, a king.
Luke 23:3And Pilate demanded of him saying, Art *thou* the king of the Jews? And he answering him said, Thou sayest. Then Pilate asked Him, "You, then, are the King of the Jews?" "It is as you say," He replied. And Pilate said to him, Are you the King of the Jews? And he said in answer, You say so.
Luke 23:4And Pilate said to the chief priests and the crowds, I find no guilt in this man.Pilate said to the High Priests and to the crowd, "I can find no crime in this man."And Pilate said to the chief priests and the people, In my opinion this man has done no wrong.
Luke 23:5But they insisted, saying, He stirs up the people, teaching throughout all Judaea, beginning from Galilee even on to here. But they violently insisted. "He stirs up the people," they said, "throughout all Judaea with His teaching even from Galilee (where He first started) to this city."But they became more violent than before, saying, He has made trouble among the people, teaching through all Judaea from Galilee to this place.
Luke 23:6But Pilate, having heard Galilee [named], demanded if the man were a Galilaean; On hearing this, Pilate inquired, "Is this man a Galilaean?"But at these words Pilate said, Is the man a Galilaean?
Luke 23:7and having learned that he was of Herod's jurisdiction, remitted him to Herod, who himself also was at Jerusalem in those days. And learning that He belonged to Herod's jurisdiction he sent Him to Herod, for he too was in Jerusalem at that time. And when he saw that he was under the authority of Herod, he sent him to Herod, who was in Jerusalem himself at that time.
Luke 23:8And when Herod saw Jesus he greatly rejoiced, for he had been a long while desirous of seeing him, because of hearing many things concerning him, and he hoped to see some sign done by him;To Herod the sight of Jesus was a great gratification, for, for a long time, he had been wanting to see Him, because he had heard so much about Him. He hoped also to see some miracle performed by Him.Now when Herod saw Jesus he was very glad, having for a long time had a desire to see him, for he had had accounts of him, and was hoping to see some wonders done by him.
Luke 23:9and he questioned him in many words, but *he* answered him nothing. So he put a number of questions to Him, but Jesus gave him no reply. And he put a great number of questions to him, but he said nothing.
Luke 23:10And the chief priests and the scribes stood and accused him violently.Meanwhile the High Priests and the Scribes were standing there and vehemently accusing Him.And the chief priests and the scribes were there, making statements against him violently.
Luke 23:11And Herod with his troops having set him at nought and mocked him, having put a splendid robe upon him, sent him back to Pilate. Then, laughing to scorn the claims of Jesus, Herod (and his soldiers with him) made sport of Him, dressed Him in a gorgeous costume, and sent Him back to Pilate. And Herod, with the men of his army, put shame on him and made sport of him, and dressing him in shining robes, he sent him back to Pilate.
Luke 23:12And Pilate and Herod became friends with one another the same day, for they had been at enmity before between themselves. And on that very day Herod and Pilate became friends again, for they had been for some time at enmity. And that day Herod and Pilate became friends with one another, for before they had been against one another.
Luke 23:13And Pilate, having called together the chief priests and the rulers and the people,Then calling together the High Priests and the Rulers and the people, Pilate said,And Pilate sent for the chief priests and the rulers and the people, and said to them,
Luke 23:14said to them, Ye have brought to me this man as turning away the people [to rebellion], and behold, I, having examined him before you, have found nothing criminal in this man as to the things of which ye accuse him;"You have brought this man to me on a charge of corrupting the loyalty of the people. But, you see, I have examined him in your presence and have discovered in the man no ground for the accusations which you bring against him.You say that this man has been teaching the people evil things: now I, after going into the question before you, see nothing wrong in this man in connection with the things which you have said against him:
Luke 23:15nor Herod either, for I remitted you to him, and behold, nothing worthy of death is done by him.No, nor does Herod; for he has sent him back to us; and, you see, there is nothing he has done that deserves death. And Herod is of the same opinion, for he has sent him back to us; for, you see, he has done nothing for which I might put him to death.
Luke 23:16Having chastised him therefore, I will release him.I will therefore give him a light punishment and release him."And so I will give him punishment and let him go.
Luke 23:17( Now he was obliged to release one for them at the feast.)[][]
Luke 23:18But they cried out in a mass saying, Away with this [man] and release Barabbas to us;Then the whole multitude burst out into a shout. "Away with this man," they said, "and release Barabbas to us"But with loud voices they said all together, Put this man to death, and make Barabbas free.
Luke 23:19who was one who, for a certain tumult which had taken place in the city, and [for] murder, had been cast into prison.Barabbas! who had been lodged in jail for some time in connexion with a riot which had occurred in the city, and for murder. Now this man was in prison because of an attack against the government in the town, in which there had been loss of life.

Luke 23:21But they cried out in reply saying, Crucify, crucify him. They, however, persistently shouted, "Crucify, crucify him!"But crying out they said, To the cross with him!
Luke 23:22And he said the third time to them, What evil then has this [man] done? I have found no cause of death in him: I will chastise him therefore and release him.A third time he appealed to them: "Why, what crime has the man committed? I have discovered in him nothing that deserves death. I will therefore give him a light punishment and release him."And he said to them a third time, Why, what evil has he done? I see no reason for putting him to death: I will give him punishment and let him go.
Luke 23:23But they were urgent with loud voices, begging that he might be crucified. And their voices [and those of the chief priests] prevailed. But they urgently insisted, demanding with frantic outcries that He should be crucified; and their clamour prevailed. But they went on crying out loudly, Let him be put to death on the cross. And they had their way.
Luke 23:24And Pilate adjudged that what they begged should take place. So Pilate gave judgement, yielding to their demand. And Pilate gave his decision for their desire to be put into effect.
Luke 23:25And he released him who, for tumult and murder, had been cast into prison, whom they begged for, and Jesus he delivered up to their will. The man who was lying in prison charged with riot and murder and for whom they clamoured he set free, but Jesus he gave up to be dealt with as they desired. And in answer to their request, he let that man go free who had been in prison for acting against the government and causing death, and Jesus he gave up to their pleasure.
Luke 23:26And as they led him away, they laid hold on a certain Simon, a Cyrenian, coming from the field, and put the cross upon him to bear it behind Jesus. As soon as they led Him away, they laid hold on one Simon, a Cyrenaean, who was coming in from the country, and on his shoulders they put the cross, for him to carry it behind Jesus. And while they were taking him away, they put their hands on Simon of Cyrene, who was coming from the country, and made him take the cross after Jesus.
Luke 23:27And a great multitude of the people, and of women who wailed and lamented him, followed him.A vast crowd of the people also followed Him, and of women who were beating their breasts and wailing for Him.And a great band of people went after him, and of women making signs of grief and weeping for him.

Luke 23:31for if these things are done in the green tree, what shall take place in the dry?For if they are doing these things in the case of the green tree, what will be done in that of the dry?"For if they do these things when the tree is green, what will they do when it is dry?

And they made division of his clothing among them by the decision of chance.
Luke 23:35And the people stood beholding, and the rulers also [with them] sneered, saying, He has saved others; let him save himself if this is the Christ, the chosen one of God.and the people stood looking on. Luke 23:39Now one of the malefactors who had been hanged spoke insultingly to him, saying, Art not thou the Christ? save thyself and us.Now one of the criminals who had been crucified insulted Him, saying, "Are not you the Christ? Save yourself and us."And one of the evil-doers on the cross, with bitter feeling, said to him, Are you not the Christ? Get yourself and us out of this.
Luke 23:40But the other answering rebuked him, saying, Dost *thou* too not fear God, thou that art under the same judgment? But the other, answering, reproved him. "Do you also not fear God," he said, "when you are actually suffering the same punishment? But the other, protesting, said, Have you no fear of God? for you have a part in the same punishment,
Luke 23:41and *we* indeed justly, for we receive the just recompense of what we have done; but this [man] has done nothing amiss. And we indeed are suffering justly, for we are receiving due requital for what we have done. But He has done nothing amiss."And with reason; for we have the right reward of our acts, but this man has done nothing wrong.

Luke 23:49And all those who knew him stood afar off, the women also who had followed him from Galilee, beholding these things. But all His acquaintances, and the women who had been His followers after leaving Galilee, continued standing at a distance and looking on.And all his friends and the women who came with him from Galilee, were waiting at a distance, watching these things.
