John 13:1Now before the feast of the passover, Jesus, knowing that his hour had come that he should depart out of this world to the Father, having loved his own who were in the world, loved them to the end.Now just before the Feast of the Passover this incident took place. Jesus knew that the time had come for Him to leave this world and go to the Father; and having loved His own who were in the world, He loved them to the end. Before the festival day of the pasch, Jesus knowing that his hour was come, that he should pass out of this world to the Father: having loved his own who were in the world, he loved them unto the end.
John 13:2And during supper, the devil having already put it into the heart of Judas [son] of Simon, Iscariote, that he should deliver him up,While supper was proceeding, the Devil having by this time suggested to Judas Iscariot, the son of Simon, the thought of betraying Him, Jesus,And when supper was done, (the devil having now put into the heart of Judas Iscariot, the son of Simon, to betray him,)
John 13:3[Jesus,] knowing that the Father had given him all things into his hands, and that he came out from God and was going to God,although He knew that the Father had put everything into His hands, and that He had come forth from God and was now going to God,Knowing that the Father had given him all things into his hands, and that he came from God, and goeth to God;
John 13:4rises from supper and lays aside his garments, and having taken a linen towel he girded himself:rose from the table, threw off His upper garments, and took a towel and tied it round Him.He riseth from supper, and layeth aside his garments, and having taken a towel, girded himself.
John 13:5then he pours water into the washhand basin, and began to wash the feet of the disciples, and to wipe them with the linen towel with which he was girded. Then He poured water into a basin, and proceeded to wash the feet of the disciples and to wipe them with the towel which He had put round Him.After that, he putteth water into a basin, and began to wash the feet of the disciples, and to wipe them with the towel wherewith he was girded.
John 13:6He comes therefore to Simon Peter; and *he* says to him, Lord, dost thou wash *my* feet? When He came to Simon Peter, Peter objected. "Master," he said, "are *you* going to wash my feet?"He cometh therefore to Simon Peter. And Peter saith to him: Lord, dost thou wash my feet?
John 13:7Jesus answered and said to him, What I do thou dost not know now, but thou shalt know hereafter."What I am doing," answered Jesus, "for the present you do not know, but afterwards you shall know."Jesus answered, and said to him: What I do thou knowest not now; but thou shalt know hereafter.
John 13:8Peter says to him, Thou shalt never wash my feet. Jesus answered him, Unless I wash thee, thou hast not part with me."Never, while the world lasts," said Peter, "shall you wash my feet." "If I do not wash you," replied Jesus, "you have no share with me."Peter saith to him: Thou shalt never wash my feet. Jesus answered him: If I wash thee not, thou shalt have no part with me.
John 13:9Simon Peter says to him, Lord, not my feet only, but also my hands and my head."Master," said Peter, "wash not only my feet, but also my hands and my head."Simon Peter saith to him: Lord, not only my feet, but also my hands and my head.
John 13:10Jesus says to him, He that is washed all over needs not to wash save his feet, but is wholly clean; and ye are clean, but not all."Any one who has lately bathed," said Jesus, "does not need to wash more than his feet, but is clean all over. And you my disciples are clean, and yet this is not true of all of you."Jesus saith to him: He that is washed, needeth not but to wash his feet, but is clean wholly. And you are clean, but not all.
John 13:11For he knew him that delivered him up: on account of this he said, Ye are not all clean. For He knew who was betraying Him, and that was why He said, "You are not all of you clean."For he knew who he was that would betray him; therefore he said: You are not all clean.
John 13:12When therefore he had washed their feet, and taken his garments, having sat down again, he said to them, Do ye know what I have done to you?So after He had washed their feet, put on His garments again, and returned to the table, He said to them, "Do you understand what I have done to you? Then after he had washed their feet, and taken his garments, being set down again, he said to them: Know you what I have done to you?
John 13:13Ye call me the Teacher and the Lord, and ye say well, for I am [so].You call me `The Rabbi' and `The Master,' and rightly so, for such I am.You call me Master, and Lord; and you say well, for so I am.
John 13:14If I therefore, the Lord and the Teacher, have washed your feet, ye also ought to wash one another's feet;If I then, your Master and Rabbi, have washed your feet, it is also your duty to wash one another's feet.If then I being your Lord and Master, have washed your feet; you also ought to wash one another's feet.
John 13:15for I have given you an example that, as I have done to you, ye should do also. For I have set you an example in order that you may do what I have done to you.For I have given you an example, that as I have done to you, so you do also.
John 13:16Verily, verily, I say to you, The bondman is not greater than his lord, nor the sent greater than he who has sent him.In most solemn truth I tell you that a servant is not superior to his master, nor is a messenger superior to him who sent him.Amen, amen I say to you: The servant is not greater than his lord; neither is the apostle greater than he that sent him.
John 13:17If ye know these things, blessed are ye if ye do them.If you know all this, blessed are you if you act accordingly. If you know these things, you shall be blessed if you do them.
John 13:18I speak not of you all. I know those whom I have chosen; but that the scripture might be fulfilled, He that eats bread with me has lifted up his heel against me.I am not speaking of all of you. I know whom I have chosen, but things are as they are in order that the Scripture may be fulfilled, which says, `He who eats my bread has lifted up his heel against me.'I speak not of you all: I know whom I have chosen. But that the scripture may be fulfilled: He that eateth bread with me, shall lift up his heel against me.
John 13:19I tell you [it] now before it happens, that when it happens, ye may believe that I am [he].From this time forward I tell you things before they happen, in order that when they do happen you may believe that I am He.At present I tell you, before it come to pass: that when it shall come to pass, you may believe that I am he.
John 13:20Verily, verily, I say to you, He who receives whomsoever I shall send receives me; and he that receives me receives him who has sent me.In most solemn truth I tell you that he who receives whoever I send receives me, and that he who receives me receives Him who sent me."Amen, amen I say to you, he that receiveth whomsoever I send, receiveth me; and he that receiveth me, receiveth him that sent me.
John 13:21Having said these things, Jesus was troubled in spirit, and testified and said, Verily, verily, I say to you, that one of you shall deliver me up.After speaking thus Jesus was troubled in spirit and said with deep earnestness, "In most solemn truth I tell you that one of you will betray me."When Jesus had said these things, he was troubled in spirit; and he testified, and said: Amen, amen I say to you, one of you shall betray me.
John 13:22The disciples therefore looked one on another, doubting of whom he spoke. The disciples began looking at one another, at a loss to know to which of them He was referring. The disciples therefore looked one upon another, doubting of whom he spoke.
John 13:23Now there was at table one of his disciples in the bosom of Jesus, whom Jesus loved. There was at table one of His disciples the one Jesus loved reclining with his head on Jesus's bosom. Now there was leaning on Jesus' bosom one of his disciples, whom Jesus loved.
John 13:24Simon Peter makes a sign therefore to him to ask who it might be of whom he spoke.Making a sign therefore to him, Simon Peter said, "Tell us to whom he is referring."Simon Peter therefore beckoned to him, and said to him: Who is it of whom he speaketh?
John 13:25But he, leaning on the breast of Jesus, says to him, Lord, who is it?So he, having his head on Jesus's bosom, leaned back and asked, "Master, who is it?"He therefore, leaning on the breast of Jesus, saith to him: Lord, who is it?
John 13:26Jesus answers, He it is to whom I, after I have dipped the morsel, give it. And having dipped the morsel, he gives it to Judas [son] of Simon, Iscariote."It is the one," answered Jesus, "for whom I shall dip this piece of bread and to whom I shall give it." Accordingly He dipped the piece of bread, and took it and gave it to Judas, the son of the Iscariot Simon.Jesus answered: He it is to whom I shall reach bread dipped. And when he had dipped the bread, he gave it to Judas Iscariot, the son of Simon.
John 13:27And, after the morsel, then entered Satan into him. Jesus therefore says to him, What thou doest, do quickly. Then, after Judas had received the piece of bread, Satan entered into him. "Lose no time about it," said Jesus to him.And after the morsel, Satan entered into him. And Jesus said to him: That which thou dost, do quickly.
John 13:28But none of those at table knew why he said this to him;But why He said this no one else at the table understood. Now no man at the table knew to what purpose he said this unto him.
John 13:29for some supposed, because Judas had the bag, that Jesus was saying to him, Buy the things of which we have need for the feast; or that he should give something to the poor. Some, however, supposed that because Judas had the money-box Jesus meant, "Buy what we require for the Festival," or that he should give something to the poor. For some thought, because Judas had the purse, that Jesus had said to him: Buy those things which we have need of for the festival day: or that he should give something to the poor.
John 13:30Having therefore received the morsel, he went out immediately; and it was night. So Judas took the piece of bread and immediately went out. And it was night. He therefore having received the morsel, went out immediately. And it was night.
John 13:31When therefore he was gone out Jesus says, Now is the Son of man glorified, and God is glorified in him.So when he was gone out, Jesus said, "Now is the Son of Man glorified, and God is glorified in Him.When he therefore was gone out, Jesus said: Now is the Son of man glorified, and God is glorified in him.
John 13:32If God be glorified in him, God also shall glorify him in himself, and shall glorify him immediately. Moreover God will glorify Him in Himself, and will glorify Him without delay. If God be glorified in him, God also will glorify him in himself; and immediately will he glorify him.
John 13:33Children, yet a little while I am with you. Ye shall seek me; and, as I said to the Jews, Where I go ye cannot come, I say to you also now.Dear children, I am still with you a little longer. You will seek me, but, as I said to the Jews, `Where I am going you cannot come,' so for the present I say to you.Little children, yet a little while I am with you. You shall seek me; and as I said to the Jews: Whither I go you cannot come; so I say to you now.
John 13:34A new commandment I give to you, that ye love one another; as I have loved you, that ye also love one another.A new commandment I give you, to love one another; that as I have loved you, you also may love one another.A new commandment I give unto you: That you love one another, as I have loved you, that you also love one another.
John 13:35By this shall all know that ye are disciples of mine, if ye have love amongst yourselves. It is by this that every one will know that you are my disciples if you love one another."By this shall all men know that you are my disciples, if you have love one for another.
John 13:36Simon Peter says to him, Lord, where goest thou? Jesus answered him, Where I go thou canst not follow me now, but thou shalt follow me after."Master," inquired Simon Peter, "where are you going?" "Where I am going," replied Jesus, "you cannot be my follower now, but you shall be later."Simon Peter saith to him: Lord, whither goest thou? Jesus answered: Whither I go, thou canst not follow me now; but thou shalt follow hereafter.
John 13:37Peter says to him, Lord, why cannot I follow thee now? I will lay down my life for thee."Master," asked Peter again, "why cannot I follow you now? I will lay down my life on your behalf.Peter saith to him: Why cannot I follow thee now? I will lay down my life for thee.
John 13:38Jesus answers, Thou wilt lay down thy life for me! Verily, verily, I say to thee, The cock shall not crow till thou hast denied me thrice."You say you will lay down your life on my behalf!" said Jesus; "in most solemn truth I tell you that the cock will not crow before you have three times disowned me."Jesus answered him: Wilt thou lay down thy life for me? Amen, amen I say to thee, the cock shall not crow, till thou deny me thrice.
