John 4:1When therefore the Lord knew that the Pharisees had heard that Jesus makes and baptises more disciples than JohnNow as soon as the Master was aware that the Pharisees had heard it said, "Jesus is gaining and baptizing more disciples than John"When Jesus therefore understood that the Pharisees had heard that Jesus maketh more disciples, and baptizeth more than John,
John 4:2(however, Jesus himself did not baptise, but his disciples),though Jesus Himself did not baptize them, but His disciples did(Though Jesus himself did not baptize, but his disciples,)
John 4:3he left Judaea and went away again unto Galilee. He left Judaea and returned to Galilee. He left Judea, and went again into Galilee.
John 4:4And he must needs pass through Samaria. His road lay through Samaria,And he was of necessity to pass through Samaria.
John 4:5He comes therefore to a city of Samaria called Sychar, near to the land which Jacob gave to his son Joseph.and so He came to Sychar, a town in Samaria near the piece of land that Jacob gave to his son Joseph. He cometh therefore to a city of Samaria, which is called Sichar, near the land which Jacob gave to his son Joseph.
John 4:6Now a fountain of Jacob's was there; Jesus therefore, being wearied with the way he had come, sat just as he was at the fountain. It was about the sixth hour.Jacob's Well was there: and accordingly Jesus, tired out with His journey, sat down by the well to rest. It was about six o'clock in the evening. Now Jacob's well was there. Jesus therefore being wearied with his journey, sat thus on the well. It was about the sixth hour.
John 4:7A woman comes out of Samaria to draw water. Jesus says to her, Give me to drinkPresently there came a woman of Samaria to draw water. Jesus asked her to give Him some water; There cometh a woman of Samaria, to draw water. Jesus saith to her: Give me to drink.
John 4:8(for his disciples had gone away into the city that they might buy provisions).for His disciples were gone to the town to buy provisions. For his disciples were gone into the city to buy meats.
John 4:9The Samaritan woman therefore says to him, How dost thou, being a Jew, ask to drink of me who am a Samaritan woman? for Jews have no intercourse with Samaritans."How is it," replied the woman, "that a Jew like you asks me, who am a woman and a Samaritan, for water?" (For Jews have no dealings with Samaritans.)Then that Samaritan woman saith to him: How dost thou, being a Jew, ask of me to drink, who am a Samaritan woman? For the Jews do not communicate with the Samaritans.
John 4:10Jesus answered and said to her, If thou knewest the gift of God, and who it is that says to thee, Give me to drink, thou wouldest have asked of him, and he would have given thee living water."If you had known God's free gift," replied Jesus, "and who it is that said to you, `Give me some water,' you would have asked Him, and He would have given you living water."Jesus answered, and said to her: If thou didst know the gift of God, and who he is that saith to thee, Give me to drink; thou perhaps wouldst have asked of him, and he would have given thee living water.
John 4:11The woman says to him, Sir, thou hast nothing to draw with, and the well is deep: whence then hast thou the living water?"Sir," she said, "you have nothing to draw with, and the well is deep; so where can you get the living water from? The woman saith to him: Sir, thou hast nothing wherein to draw, and the well is deep; from whence then hast thou living water?
John 4:12Art thou greater than our father Jacob, who gave us the well, and drank of it himself, and his sons, and his cattle? Are you greater than our forefather Jacob, who gave us the well, and himself drank from it, as did also his sons and his cattle?"Art thou greater than our father Jacob, who gave us the well, and drank thereof himself, and his children, and his cattle?
John 4:13Jesus answered and said to her, Every one who drinks of this water shall thirst again;"Every one," replied Jesus, "who drinks any of this water will be thirsty again;Jesus answered, and said to her: Whosoever drinketh of this water, shall thirst again; but he that shall drink of the water that I will give him, shall not thirst for ever:
John 4:14but whosoever drinks of the water which I shall give him shall never thirst for ever, but the water which I shall give him shall become in him a fountain of water, springing up into eternal life.but whoever drinks any of the water that I shall give him will never, never thirst. But the water that I shall give him will become a fountain within him of water springing up for the Life of the Ages."But the water that I will give him, shall become in him a fountain of water, springing up into life everlasting.
John 4:15The woman says to him, Sir, give me this water, that I may not thirst nor come here to draw."Sir," said the woman, "give me that water, that I may never be thirsty, nor continually come all the way here to draw from the well."The woman saith to him: Sir, give me this water, that I may not thirst, nor come hither to draw.
John 4:16Jesus says to her, Go, call thy husband, and come here."Go and call your husband," said Jesus; "and come back."Jesus saith to her: Go, call thy husband, and come hither. 17 The woman answered, and said: I have no husband. Jesus said to her: Thou hast said well, I have no husband:
John 4:17The woman answered and said, I have not a husband. Jesus says to her, Thou hast well said, I have not a husband;"I have no husband," she replied. "You rightly say that you have no husband," said Jesus; For thou hast had five husbands: and he whom thou now hast, is not thy husband. This thou hast said truly.
John 4:18for thou hast had five husbands, and he whom now thou hast is not thy husband: this thou hast spoken truly."for you have had five husbands, and the man you have at present is not your husband. You have spoken the truth in saying that."The woman saith to him: Sir, I perceive that thou art a prophet.
John 4:19The woman says to him, Sir, I see that thou art a prophet."Sir," replied the woman, "I see that you are a Prophet. Our fathers adored on this mountain, and you say, that at Jerusalem is the place where men must adore.
John 4:20Our fathers worshipped in this mountain, and ye say that in Jerusalem is the place where one must worship. Our forefathers worshipped on this mountain, but you Jews say that the place where people must worship is in Jerusalem."Jesus saith to her: Woman, believe me, that the hour cometh, when you shall neither on this mountain, not in Jerusalem, adore the Father.
John 4:21Jesus says to her, Woman, believe me, [the] hour is coming when ye shall neither in this mountain nor in Jerusalem worship the Father."Believe me," said Jesus, "the time is coming when you will worship the Father neither on this mountain nor in Jerusalem. You adore that which you know not: we adore that which we know; for salvation is of the Jews.
John 4:22Ye worship ye know not what; we worship what we know, for salvation is of the Jews. You worship One of whom you know nothing. We worship One whom we know; for salvation comes from the Jews. But the hour cometh, and now is, when the true adorers shall adore the Father in spirit and in truth. For the Father also seeketh such to adore him.
John 4:23But [the] hour is coming and now is, when the true worshippers shall worship the Father in spirit and truth; for also the Father seeks such as his worshippers. But a time is coming nay, has already come when the true worshippers will worship the Father with true spiritual worship; for indeed the Father desires such worshippers.God is a spirit; and they that adore him, must adore him in spirit and in truth.
John 4:24God [is] a spirit; and they who worship him must worship [him] in spirit and truth.God is Spirit; and those who worship Him must bring Him true spiritual worship."The woman saith to him: I know that the Messias cometh (who is called Christ); therefore, when he is come, he will tell us all things.
John 4:25The woman says to him, I know that Messias is coming, who is called Christ; when *he* comes he will tell us all things."I know," replied the woman, "that Messiah is coming `the Christ,' as He is called. When He has come, He will tell us everything."Jesus saith to her: I am he, who am speaking with thee.
John 4:26Jesus says to her, I who speak to thee am [he]."I am He," said Jesus "I who am now talking to you."And immediately his disciples came; and they wondered that he talked with the woman. Yet no man said: What seekest thou? or, why talkest thou with her?
John 4:27And upon this came his disciples, and wondered that he spoke with a woman; yet no one said, What seekest thou? or, Why speakest thou with her?Just then His disciples came, and were surprised to find Him talking with a woman. Yet not one of them asked Him, "What is your wish?" or "Why are you talking with her?"The woman therefore left her waterpot, and went her way into the city, and saith to the men there:
John 4:28The woman then left her waterpot and went away into the city, and says to the men,The woman however, leaving her pitcher, went away to the town, and called the people.Come, and see a man who has told me all things whatsoever I have done. Is not he the Christ?
John 4:29Come, see a man who told me all things I had ever done: is not he the Christ?"Come," she said, "and see a man who has told me everything I have ever done. Can this be the Christ, do you think?"They went therefore out of the city, and came unto him.
John 4:30They went out of the city and came to him. They left the town and set out to go to Him.In the mean time the disciples prayed him, saying: Rabbi, eat.
John 4:31But meanwhile the disciples asked him saying, Rabbi, eat.Meanwhile the disciples were urging Jesus. "Rabbi," they said, "eat something."But he said to them: I have meat to eat, which you know not.
John 4:32But he said to them, I have food to eat which ye do not know."I have food to eat," He replied, "of which you do not know."The disciples therefore said one to another: Hath any man brought him to eat?
John 4:33The disciples therefore said to one another, Has any one brought him [anything] to eat?So the disciples began questioning one another. "Can it be," they said, "that some one has brought Him something to eat?"Jesus saith to them: My meat is to do the will of him that sent me, that I may perfect his work.
John 4:34Jesus says to them, My food is that I should do the will of him that has sent me, and that I should finish his work."My food," said Jesus, "is to be obedient to Him who sent me, and fully to accomplish His work.Do you not say, There are yet four months, and then the harvest cometh? Behold, I say to you, lift up your eyes, and see the countries; for they are white already to harvest.
John 4:35Do not ye say, that there are yet four months and the harvest comes? Behold, I say to you, Lift up your eyes and behold the fields, for they are already white to harvest.Do you not say, `It wants four months yet to the harvest'? But look round, I tell you, and observe these plains they are already ripe for the sickle. And he that reapeth receiveth wages, and gathereth fruit unto life everlasting: that both he that soweth, and he that reapeth, may rejoice together.
John 4:36He that reaps receives wages and gathers fruit unto life eternal, that both he that sows and he that reaps may rejoice together. The reaper gets pay and gathers in a crop in preparation for the Life of the Ages, that so the sower and the reapers may rejoice together. For in this is the saying true: That it is one man that soweth, and it is another that reapeth.
John 4:37For in this is [verified] the true saying, It is one who sows and another who reaps. For it is in this that you see the real meaning of the saying, `The sower is one person, and the reaper is another.'I have sent you to reap that in which you did not labour: others have laboured, and you have entered into their labours.
John 4:38I have sent you to reap that on which ye have not laboured; others have laboured, and ye have entered into their labours.I sent you to reap a harvest which is not the result of your own labours. Others have laboured, and you are getting benefit from their labours."Now of that city many of the Samaritans believed in him, for the word of the woman giving testimony: He told me all things whatsoever I have done.
John 4:39But many of the Samaritans of that city believed on him because of the word of the woman who bore witness, He told me all things that I had ever done.Of the Samaritan population of that town a good many believed in Him because of the woman's statement when she declared, "He has told me all that I have ever done."So when the Samaritans were come to him, they desired that he would tarry there. And he abode there two days.
John 4:40When therefore the Samaritans came to him they asked him to abide with them, and he abode there two days. When however the Samaritans came to Him, they asked Him on all sides to stay with them; and He stayed there two days. And many more believed in him because of his own word.
John 4:41And more a great deal believed on account of his word; Then a far larger number of people believed because of His own words,And they said to the woman: We now believe, not for thy saying: for we ourselves have heard him, and know that this is indeed the Saviour of the world.
John 4:42and they said to the woman, [It is] no longer on account of thy saying that we believe, for we have heard him ourselves, and we know that this is indeed the Saviour of the world.and they said to the woman, "We no longer believe in Him simply because of your statements; for we have now heard for ourselves, and we know that this man really is the Saviour of the world."Now after two days, he departed thence, and went into Galilee.
John 4:43But after the two days he went forth thence and went away into Galilee,After the two days He departed, and went into Galilee; For Jesus himself gave testimony that a prophet hath no honour in his own country.
John 4:44for Jesus himself bore witness that a prophet has no honour in his own country.though Jesus Himself declared that a Prophet has no honour in his own country. And when he was come into Galilee, the Galileans received him, having seen all the things he had done at Jerusalem on the festival day; for they also went to the festival day.
John 4:45When therefore he came into Galilee, the Galileans received him, having seen all that he had done in Jerusalem during the feast, for they also went to the feast. When however He reached Galilee, the Galilaeans welcomed Him eagerly, having been eye-witnesses of all that He had done in Jerusalem at the Festival; for they also had been to the Festival. He came again therefore into Cana of Galilee, where he made the water wine. And there was a certain ruler, whose son was sick at Capharnaum.
John 4:46He came therefore again to Cana of Galilee, where he made the water wine. And there was a certain courtier in Capernaum whose son was sick.So He came once more to Cana in Galilee, where He had made the water into wine. Now there was a certain officer of the King's court whose son was ill at Capernaum. He having heard that Jesus was come from Judea into Galilee, went to him, and prayed him to come down, and heal his son; for he was at the point of death.
John 4:47He, having heard that Jesus had come out of Judaea into Galilee, went to him and asked [him] that he would come down and heal his son, for he was about to die.Having heard that Jesus had come from Judaea to Galilee, he came to Him and begged Him to go down and cure his son; for he was at the point of death.Jesus therefore said to him: Unless you see signs and wonders, you believe not.
John 4:48Jesus therefore said to him, Unless ye see signs and wonders ye will not believe."Unless you and others see miracles and marvels," said Jesus, "nothing will induce you to believe."The ruler saith to him: Lord, come down before that my son die.
John 4:49The courtier says to him, Sir, come down ere my child die."Sir," pleaded the officer, "come down before my child dies."Jesus saith to him: Go thy way; thy son liveth. The man believed the word which Jesus said to him, and went his way.
John 4:50Jesus says to him, Go, thy son lives. And the man believed the word which Jesus said to him, and went his way."You may return home," replied Jesus; "your son has recovered." He believed the words of Jesus, and started back home; And as he was going down, his servants met him; and they brought word, saying, that his son lived.
John 4:51But already, as he was going down, his servants met him and brought [him] word saying, Thy child lives.and he was already on his way down when his servants met him and told him that his son was alive and well.He asked therefore of them the hour wherein he grew better. And they said to him: Yesterday, at the seventh hour, the fever left him.
John 4:52He inquired therefore from them the hour at which he got better. And they said to him, Yesterday at the seventh hour the fever left him.So he inquired of them at what hour he had shown improvement. "Yesterday, about seven o'clock," they replied, "the fever left him."The father therefore knew, that it was at the same hour that Jesus said to him, Thy son liveth; and himself believed, and his whole house.
John 4:53The father therefore knew that [it was] in that hour in which Jesus said to him, Thy son lives; and he believed, himself and his whole house. Then the father recollected that that was the time at which Jesus had said to him, "Your son has recovered," and he and his whole household became believers. This is again the second miracle that Jesus did, when he was come out of Judea into Galilee.
John 4:54This second sign again did Jesus, being come out of Judaea into Galilee. This is the second miracle that Jesus performed, after coming from Judaea into Galilee.
