James 3:1Be not many teachers, my brethren, knowing that we shall receive greater judgment.Do not be eager, my brethren, for many among you to become teachers; for you know that we teachers shall undergo severer judgement. My brethren, be not many masters, knowing that we shall receive the greater condemnation.
James 3:2For we all often offend. If any one offend not in word, *he* [is] a perfect man, able to bridle the whole body too.For we often stumble and fall, all of us. If there is any one who never stumbles in speech, that man has reached maturity of character and is able to curb his whole nature. For in many things we offend all. If any man offend not in word, the same is a perfect man, and able also to bridle the whole body.
James 3:3Behold, we put the bits in the mouths of the horses, that they may obey us, and we turn round their whole bodies.Remember that we put the horses' bit into their mouths to make them obey us, and so we turn their whole bodies round.Behold, we put bits in the horses' mouths, that they may obey us; and we turn about their whole body.
James 3:4Behold also the ships, which are so great, and driven by violent winds, are turned about by a very small rudder, wherever the pleasure of the helmsman will.So too with ships, great as they are, and often driven along by strong gales, yet they can be steered with a very small rudder in whichever direction the caprice of the man at the helm chooses.Behold also the ships, which though they be so great, and are driven of fierce winds, yet are they turned about with a very small helm, whithersoever the governor listeth.
James 3:5Thus also the tongue is a little member, and boasts great things. See how little a fire, how large a wood it kindles! In the same way the tongue is an insignificant part of the body, but it is immensely boastful. Remember how a mere spark may set a vast forest in flames.Even so the tongue is a little member, and boasteth great things. Behold, how great a matter a little fire kindleth!
James 3:6and the tongue [is] fire, the world of unrighteousness; the tongue is set in our members, the defiler of the whole body, and which sets fire to the course of nature, and is set on fire of hell. And the tongue is a fire. That world of iniquity, the tongue, is placed within us spotting and soiling our whole nature, and setting the whole round of our lives on fire, being itself set on fire by Gehenna. And the tongue is a fire, a world of iniquity: so is the tongue among our members, that it defileth the whole body, and setteth on fire the course of nature; and it is set on fire of hell.
James 3:7For every species both of beasts and of birds, both of creeping things and of sea animals, is tamed and has been tamed by the human species; For brute nature under all its forms beasts and birds, reptiles and fishes can be subjected and kept in subjection by human nature. For every kind of beasts, and of birds, and of serpents, and of things in the sea, is tamed, and hath been tamed of mankind:
James 3:8but the tongue can no one among men tame; [it is] an unsettled evil, full of death-bringing poison. But the tongue no man or woman is able to tame. It is an ever-busy mischief, and is full of deadly poison. But the tongue can no man tame; it is an unruly evil, full of deadly poison.
James 3:9Therewith bless we the Lord and Father, and therewith curse we men made after [the] likeness of God.With it we bless the Lord and Father, and with it we curse men, who are made in God's likeness.Therewith bless we God, even the Father; and therewith curse we men, which are made after the similitude of God.
James 3:10Out of the same mouth goes forth blessing and cursing. It is not right, my brethren, that these things should be thus.Out of the same mouth there proceed blessing and cursing. My brethren, this ought not to be.Out of the same mouth proceedeth blessing and cursing. My brethren, these things ought not so to be.
James 3:11Does the fountain, out of the same opening, pour forth sweet and bitter? In a fountain, are fresh water and bitter sent forth from the same opening?Doth a fountain send forth at the same place sweet water and bitter?
James 3:12Can, my brethren, a fig produce olives, or a vine figs? Neither [can] salt [water] make sweet water. Can a fig-tree, my brethren, yield olives, or a vine yield figs? No; and neither can salt water yield sweet. Can the fig tree, my brethren, bear olive berries? either a vine, figs? so can no fountain both yield salt water and fresh.
James 3:13Who [is] wise and understanding among you; let him shew out of a good conversation his works in meekness of wisdom;Which of you is a wise and well-instructed man? Let him prove it by a right life with conduct guided by a wisely teachable spirit.Who is a wise man and endued with knowledge among you? let him shew out of a good conversation his works with meekness of wisdom.
James 3:14but if ye have bitter emulation and strife in your hearts, do not boast and lie against the truth. But if in your hearts you have bitter feelings of envy and rivalry, do not speak boastfully and falsely, in defiance of the truth. But if ye have bitter envying and strife in your hearts, glory not, and lie not against the truth.
James 3:15This is not the wisdom which comes down from above, but earthly, natural, devilish. That is not the wisdom which comes down from above: it belongs to earth, to the unspiritual nature, and to evil spirits. This wisdom descendeth not from above, but is earthly, sensual, devilish.
James 3:16For where emulation and strife [are], there [is] disorder and every evil thing. For where envy and rivalry are, there also are unrest and every vile deed. For where envying and strife is, there is confusion and every evil work.
James 3:17But the wisdom from above first is pure, then peaceful, gentle, yielding, full of mercy and good fruits, unquestioning, unfeigned. The wisdom from above is first of all pure, then peaceful, courteous, not self-willed, full of compassion and kind actions, free from favouritism and from all insincerity. But the wisdom that is from above is first pure, then peaceable, gentle, and easy to be intreated, full of mercy and good fruits, without partiality, and without hypocrisy.
James 3:18But [the] fruit of righteousness in peace is sown for them that make peace. And peace, for those who strive for peace, is the seed of which the harvest is righteousness. And the fruit of righteousness is sown in peace of them that make peace.
