2nd-Peter 3:1 | This, a second letter, beloved, I already write to you, in [both] which I stir up, in the way of putting you in remembrance, your pure mind, | This letter which I am now writing to you, dear friends, is my second letter. In both my letters I seek to revive in your honest minds the memory of certain things, | This is now, beloved, the second letter that I have written to you; and in both of them I stir up your sincere mind by reminding you; |
2nd-Peter 3:2 | to be mindful of the words spoken before by the holy prophets, and of the commandment of the Lord and Saviour by your apostles; | so that you may recall the words spoken long ago by the holy Prophets, and the commandments of our Lord and Saviour given you through your Apostles. | that you should remember the words which were spoken before by the holy prophets, and the commandments of us, the apostles of the Lord and Savior: |
2nd-Peter 3:3 | knowing this first, that there shall come at [the] close of the days mockers with mocking, walking according to their own lusts, | But, above all, remember that, in the last days, men will come who make a mock at everything men governed only by their own passions, | knowing this first, that in the last days mockers will come, walking after their own lusts, |
2nd-Peter 3:4 | and saying, Where is the promise of his coming? for from the time the fathers fell asleep all things remain thus from [the] beginning of [the] creation. | and, asking, "What has become of His promised Return? For from the time our forefathers fell asleep all things continue as they have been ever since the creation of the world." | and saying, "Where is the promise of his coming?" For, from the day that the fathers fell asleep, all things continue as they were from the beginning of the creation. |
2nd-Peter 3:5 | For this is hidden from them through their own wilfulness, that heavens were of old, and an earth, having its subsistence out of water and in water, by the word of God, | For they are wilfully blind to the fact that there were heavens which existed of old, and an earth, the latter arising out of water and extending continuously through water, by the command of God; | For this they willfully forget, that there were heavens from of old, and an earth formed out of water and amid water, by the word of God; |
2nd-Peter 3:6 | through which [waters] the then world, deluged with water, perished. | and that, by means of these, the then existing race of men was overwhelmed with water and perished. | by which means the world that then was, being overflowed with water, perished. |
2nd-Peter 3:7 | But the present heavens and the earth by his word are laid up in store, kept for fire unto a day of judgment and destruction of ungodly men. | But the present heavens and the present earth are, by the command of the same God, kept stored up, reserved for fire in preparation for a day of judgement and of destruction for the ungodly. | But the heavens that now are, and the earth, by the same word have been stored up for fire, being reserved against the day of judgment and destruction of ungodly men. |
2nd-Peter 3:8 | But let not this one thing be hidden from you, beloved, that one day with [the] Lord [is] as a thousand years, and a thousand years as one day. | But there is one thing, dear friends, which you must not forget. With the Lord one day resembles a thousand years and a thousand years resemble one day. | But don't forget this one thing, beloved, that one day is with the Lord as a thousand years, and a thousand years as one day. |
2nd-Peter 3:9 | [The] Lord does not delay his promise, as some account of delay, but is longsuffering towards you, not willing that any should perish, but that all should come to repentance. | The Lord is not slow in fulfilling His promise, in the sense in which some men speak of slowness. But He bears patiently with you, His desire being that no one should perish but that all should come to repentance. | The Lord is not slow concerning his promise, as some count slowness; but is longsuffering towards us, not wishing that any should perish, but that all should come to repentance. |
2nd-Peter 3:10 | But the day of [the] Lord will come as a thief, in which the heavens will pass away with a rushing noise, and [the] elements, burning with heat, shall be dissolved, and [the] earth and the works in it shall be burnt up. | The day of the Lord will come like a thief it will be a day on which the heavens will pass away with a rushing noise, the elements be destroyed in the fierce heat, and the earth and all the works of man be utterly burnt up. | But the day of the Lord will come as a thief in the night; in which the heavens will pass away with a great noise, and the elements will be dissolved with fervent heat, and the earth and the works that are in it will be burned up. |
2nd-Peter 3:11 | All these things then being to be dissolved, what ought ye to be in holy conversation and godliness, | Since all these things are thus pre-destined to dissolution, what sort of men ought you to be found to be in all holy living and godly conduct, | Therefore since all these things are thus to be destroyed, what manner of persons ought you to be in holy living and godliness, |
2nd-Peter 3:12 | waiting for and hastening the coming of the day of God, by reason of which [the] heavens, being on fire, shall be dissolved, and [the] elements, burning with heat, shall melt? | eagerly looking forward to the coming of the day of God, by reason of which the heavens, all ablaze, will be destroyed, and the elements will melt in the fierce heat? | looking for and earnestly desiring the coming of the day of God, by reason of which the heavens being on fire will be dissolved, and the elements will melt with fervent heat? |
2nd-Peter 3:13 | But, according to his promise, we wait for new heavens and a new earth, wherein dwells righteousness. | But in accordance with His promise we are expecting new heavens and a new earth, in which righteousness will dwell. | But, according to his promise, we look for new heavens and a new earth, in which dwells righteousness. |
2nd-Peter 3:14 | Wherefore, beloved, as ye wait for these things, be diligent to be found of him in peace, without spot and blameless; | Therefore, dear friends, since you have these expectations, earnestly seek to be found in His presence, free from blemish or reproach, in peace. | Therefore, beloved, seeing that you look for these things, be diligent to be found in peace, without blemish and blameless in his sight. |
2nd-Peter 3:15 | and account the longsuffering of our Lord [to be] salvation; according as our beloved brother Paul also has written to you according to the wisdom given to him, | And always regard the patient forbearance of our Lord as salvation, as our dear brother Paul also has written to you in virtue of the wisdom granted to him. | Regard the patience of our Lord as salvation; even as our beloved brother Paul also, according to the wisdom given to him, wrote to you; |
2nd-Peter 3:16 | as also in all [his] epistles, speaking in them of these things; among which some things are hard to be understood, which the untaught and ill-established wrest, as also the other scriptures, to their own destruction. | That is what he says in all his letters, when speaking in them of these things. In those letters there are some statements hard to understand, which ill-taught and unprincipled people pervert, just as they do the rest of the Scriptures, to their own ruin. | as also in all of his letters, speaking in them of these things. In those are some things hard to be understood, which the ignorant and unsettled twist, as they do also to the other scriptures, to their own destruction. |
2nd-Peter 3:17 | *Ye* therefore, beloved, knowing [these] things before, take care lest, being led away along with the error of the wicked, ye should fall from your own stedfastness: | You, therefore, dear friends, having been warned beforehand, must continually be on your guard so as not to be led astray by the false teaching of immoral men nor fall from your own stedfastness. | You therefore, beloved, knowing these things beforehand, beware lest, being carried away with the error of the wicked, you fall from your own steadfastness. |
2nd-Peter 3:18 | but grow in grace, and in [the] knowledge of our Lord and Saviour Jesus Christ. To him [be] glory both now and to [the] day of eternity. Amen. | But be always growing in the grace and knowledge of our Lord and Saviour Jesus Christ. To Him be all glory, both now and to the day of Eternity! | But grow in the grace and knowledge of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ. To him be the glory both now and forever. Amen. |
