John 8:1 | But Jesus went to the mount of Olives. | but Jesus went to the Mount of Olives. | but Jesus went to the Mount of Olives. |
John 8:2 | And early in the morning he came again into the temple, and all the people came to him; and he sat down and taught them. | At break of day however He returned to the Temple, and there the people came to Him in crowds. He seated Himself; | At dawn, he came again into the temple, and all the people came to him. He sat down, and taught them. |
John 8:3 | And the scribes and the Pharisees bring [to him] a woman taken in adultery, and having set her in the midst, | and was teaching them when the Scribes and the Pharisees brought to Him a woman who had been found committing adultery. They made her stand in the centre of the court, and they put the case to Him. | The scribes and the Pharisees brought a woman taken in adultery. Having set her in the midst, |
John 8:4 | they say to him, Teacher, this woman has been taken in the very act, committing adultery. | "Rabbi," they said, "this woman has been found in the very act of committing adultery. | they told him, "Teacher, we found this woman in adultery, in the very act. |
John 8:5 | Now in the law Moses has commanded us to stone such; thou therefore, what sayest thou? | Now, in the Law, Moses has ordered us to stone such women to death. But what do you say?" | Now in our law, Moses commanded us to stone such. What then do you say about her?" |
John 8:6 | But this they said proving him, that they might have [something] to accuse him [of]. But Jesus, having stooped down, wrote with his finger on the ground. | They asked this in order to put Him to the test, so that they might have some charge to bring against Him. But Jesus leant forward and began to write with His finger on the ground. | They said this testing him, that they might have something to accuse him of. But Jesus stooped down, and wrote on the ground with his finger, as if he didn't hear. |
John 8:7 | But when they continued asking him, he lifted himself up and said to them, Let him that is without sin among you first cast the stone at her. | When however they persisted with their question, He raised His head and said to them, "Let the sinless man among you be the first to throw a stone at her." | But when they continued asking him, he lifted himself up, and said to them, "He who is without sin among you, let him throw the first stone at her." |
John 8:8 | And again stooping down he wrote on the ground. | Then He leant forward again, and again began to write on the ground. | Again he stooped down, and with his finger wrote on the ground. |
John 8:9 | But they, having heard [that], went out one by one beginning from the elder ones until the last; and Jesus was left alone and the woman standing there. | They listened to Him, and then, beginning with the eldest, took their departure, one by one, till all were gone. And Jesus was left behind alone and the woman in the centre of the court. | They, when they heard it, being convicted by their conscience, went out one by one, beginning from the oldest, even to the last. Jesus was left alone with the woman where she was, in the midst. |
John 8:10 | And Jesus, lifting himself up and seeing no one but the woman, said to her, Woman, where are those thine accusers? Has no one condemned thee? | Then, raising His head, Jesus said to her, "Where are they? Has no one condemned you?" | Jesus lifted himself up, and seeing no one but the woman, said to her, "Woman, where are they? Did no one condemn you?" |
John 8:11 | And she said, No one, sir. And Jesus said to her, Neither do I condemn thee: go, and sin no more. | "No one, Sir," she replied. "And *I* do not condemn you either," said Jesus; "go, and from this time do not sin any more."] | She said, "No one, Lord." Jesus said, "Neither do I condemn you. Go your way. From now on, sin no more." |
John 8:12 | Again therefore Jesus spoke to them, saying, I am the light of the world; he that follows me shall not walk in darkness, but shall have the light of life. | Once more Jesus addressed them. "I am the Light of the world," He said; "the man who follows me shall certainly not walk in the dark, but shall have the light of Life." | Again, therefore, Jesus spoke to them, saying, "I am the light of the world. He who follows me will not walk in the darkness, but will have the light of life." |
John 8:13 | The Pharisees therefore said to him, Thou bearest witness concerning thyself; thy witness is not true. | "You are giving testimony about yourself," said the Pharisees; "your testimony is not true." | The Pharisees therefore said to him, "You testify about yourself. Your witness is not valid." |
John 8:14 | Jesus answered and said to them, Even if I bear witness concerning myself, my witness is true, because I know whence I came and whither I go: but ye know not whence I come and whither I go. | "Even if I am giving testimony about myself," replied Jesus, "my testimony is true; for I know where I came from and where I am going, but you know neither of these two things. | Jesus answered them, "Even if I testify about myself, my witness is true, for I know where I came from, and where I am going; but you don't know where I came from, or where I am going. |
John 8:15 | Ye judge according to the flesh, I judge no one. | You judge according to appearances: I am judging no one. | You judge according to the flesh. I judge no one. |
John 8:16 | And if also I judge, my judgment is true, because I am not alone, but I and the Father who has sent me. | And even if I do judge, my judgement is just; for I am not alone, but the Father who sent me is with me. | Even if I do judge, my judgment is true, for I am not alone, but I am with the Father who sent me. |
John 8:17 | And in your law too it is written that the testimony of two men is true: | In your own Law, too, it is written that the testimony of two men is true. | It's also written in your law that the testimony of two men is valid. |
John 8:18 | I am [one] who bear witness concerning myself, and the Father who has sent me bears witness concerning me. | I am one giving testimony about myself, and the Father who sent me gives testimony about me." | I am he who testifies about myself, and the Father who sent me testifies about me." |
John 8:19 | They said to him therefore, Where is thy Father? Jesus answered, Ye know neither me nor my Father. If ye had known me, ye would have known also my Father. | "Where is your Father?" they asked. "You know my Father as little as you know me." He replied; "if you knew me, you would know my Father also." | They said therefore to him, "Where is your Father?" Jesus answered, "You know neither me, nor my Father. If you knew me, you would know my Father also." |
John 8:20 | These words spoke he in the treasury, teaching in the temple; and no one took him, for his hour was not yet come. | These sayings He uttered in the Treasury, while teaching in the Temple; yet no one arrested Him, because His time had not yet come. | Jesus spoke these words in the treasury, as he taught in the temple. No one took him, because his hour had not yet come. |
John 8:21 | He said therefore again to them, I go away, and ye shall seek me, and shall die in your sin; where I go ye cannot come. | Again He said to them, "I am going away. Then you will try to find me, but you will die in your sins. Where I am going, it is impossible for you to come." | Jesus said therefore again to them, "I am going away, and you will seek me, and will die in your sins. Where I go, you can't come." |
John 8:22 | The Jews therefore said, Will he kill himself, that he says, Where I go ye cannot come? | The Jews began to ask one another, "Is he going to kill himself, do you think, that he says, `Where I am going, it is impossible for you to come'?" | The Jews therefore said, "Will he kill himself, that he says, 'Where I am going, you can't come?'" |
John 8:23 | And he said to them, Ye are from beneath; I am from above. Ye are of this world; I am not of this world. | "You," He continued, "are from below, I am from above: you are of this present world, I am not of this present world. | He said to them, "You are from beneath. I am from above. You are of this world. I am not of this world. |
John 8:24 | I said therefore to you, that ye shall die in your sins; for unless ye shall believe that I am [he], ye shall die in your sins. | That is why I told you that you will die in your sins; for, unless you believe that I am He, that is what will happen." | I said therefore to you that you will die in your sins; for unless you believe that I am he, you will die in your sins." |
John 8:25 | They said therefore to him, Who art thou? [And] Jesus said to them, Altogether that which I also say to you. | "You who are you?" they asked. "How is it that I am speaking to you at all?" replied Jesus. | They said therefore to him, "Who are you?" Jesus said to them, "Just what I have been saying to you from the beginning. |
John 8:26 | I have many things to say and to judge concerning you, but he that has sent me is true, and I, what I have heard from him, these things I say to the world. | "Many things I have to speak and to judge concerning you. But He who sent me is true, and the things which I have heard from Him are those which I have come into the world to speak." | I have many things to speak and to judge concerning you. However he who sent me is true; and the things which I heard from him, these I say to the world." |
John 8:27 | They knew not that he spoke to them of the Father. | They did not perceive that He was speaking to them of the Father. | They didn't perceive that he spoke to them about the Father. |
John 8:28 | Jesus therefore said to them, When ye shall have lifted up the Son of man, then ye shall know that I am [he], and [that] I do nothing of myself, but as the Father has taught me I speak these things. | So Jesus added, "When you have lifted up the Son of Man, then you will know that I am He. Of myself I do nothing; but as the Father has taught me, so I speak. | Jesus therefore said to them, "When you have lifted up the Son of Man, then will you know that I am he, and that I do nothing of myself, but as my Father taught me, I say these things. |
John 8:29 | And he that has sent me is with me; he has not left me alone, because I do always the things that are pleasing to him. | And He who sent me is with me. He has not left me alone: for I do always what is pleasing to Him." | He who sent me is with me. The Father hasn't left me alone, for I always do the things that are pleasing to him." |
John 8:30 | As he spoke these things many believed on him. | As He thus spoke, many became believers in Him. | As he spoke these things, many believed in him. |
John 8:31 | Jesus therefore said to the Jews who believed him, If ye abide in my word, ye are truly my disciples; | Jesus therefore said to those of the Jews who had now believed in Him, "As for you, if you hold fast to my teaching, then you are truly my disciples; | Jesus therefore said to those Jews who had believed him, "If you remain in my word, then you are truly my disciples. |
John 8:32 | and ye shall know the truth, and the truth shall set you free. | and you shall know the Truth, and the Truth will make you free." | You will know the truth, and the truth will make you free." |
John 8:33 | They answered him, We are Abraham's seed, and have never been under bondage to any one; how sayest thou, Ye shall become free? | "We are descendants of Abraham," they answered, "and have never at any time been in slavery to any one. What do those words of yours mean, `You shall become free'?" | They answered him, "We are Abraham's seed, and have never yet been in bondage to anyone. How do you say, 'You will be made free?'" |
John 8:34 | Jesus answered them, Verily, verily, I say to you, Every one that practises sin is the bondman of sin. | "In most solemn truth I tell you," replied Jesus, "that every one who commits sin is the slave of sin. | Jesus answered them, "Most assuredly I tell you, everyone who commits sin is the bondservant of sin. |
John 8:35 | Now the bondman abides not in the house for ever: the son abides for ever. | Now a slave does not remain permanently in his master's house, but a son does. | A bondservant doesn't live in the house forever. A son remains forever. |
John 8:36 | If therefore the Son shall set you free, ye shall be really free. | If then the Son shall make you free, you will be free indeed. | If therefore the Son makes you free, you will be free indeed. |
John 8:37 | I know that ye are Abraham's seed; but ye seek to kill me, because my word has no entrance in you. | You are descendants of Abraham, I know; but you want to kill me, because my teaching gains no ground within you. | I know that you are Abraham's seed, yet you seek to kill me, because my word finds no place in you. |
John 8:38 | I speak what I have seen with my Father, and ye then do what ye have seen with your father. | The words I speak are those I have learnt in the presence of the Father. Therefore you also should do what you have heard from your father." | I say the things which I have seen with my Father; and you also do the things which you have seen with your father." |
John 8:39 | They answered and said to him, Abraham is our father. Jesus says to them, If ye were Abraham's children, ye would do the works of Abraham; | "Our father is Abraham," they said. "If you were Abraham's children," replied Jesus, "it is Abraham's deeds that you would be doing. | They answered him, "Our father is Abraham." Jesus said to them, "If you were Abraham's children, you would do the works of Abraham. |
John 8:40 | but now ye seek to kill me, a man who has spoken the truth to you, which I have heard from God: this did not Abraham. | But, in fact, you are longing to kill me, a man who has spoken to you the truth which I have heard from God. Abraham did not do that. | But now you seek to kill me, a man who has told you the truth, which I heard from God. Abraham didn't do this. |
John 8:41 | Ye do the works of your father. They said [therefore] to him, We are not born of fornication; we have one father, God. | You are doing the deeds of your father." "We," they replied, "are not illegitimate children. We have one Father, namely God." | You do the works of your father." They said to him, "We were not born of sexual immorality. We have one Father, God." |
John 8:42 | Jesus said to them, If God were your father ye would have loved me, for I came forth from God and am come [from him]; for neither am I come of myself, but *he* has sent me. | "If God were your Father," said Jesus, "you would love me; for it is from God that I came and I am now here. I have not come of myself, but *He* sent me. | Therefore Jesus said to them, "If God were your Father, you would love me, for I came forth and have come from God. For neither have I come of myself, but he sent me. |
John 8:43 | Why do ye not know my speech? Because ye cannot hear my word. | How is it you do not understand me when I speak? It is because you cannot bear to listen to my words. | Why don't you understand my speech? Because you can't hear my word. |
John 8:44 | Ye are of the devil, as [your] father, and ye desire to do the lusts of your father. He was a murderer from the beginning, and has not stood in the truth, because there is no truth in him. When he speaks falsehood, he speaks of what is his own; for he is a liar and its father: | The father whose sons you are is the Devil; and you desire to do what gives him pleasure. *He* was a murderer from the beginning, and does not stand firm in the truth for there is no truth in him. Whenever he utters his lie, he utters it out of his own store; for he is a liar, and the father of lies. | You are of your Father, the devil, and it is your desire to do the lusts of your father. He was a murderer from the beginning, and doesn't stand in the truth, because there is no truth in him. When he speaks a lie, he speaks of his own; for he is a liar, and the father of it. |
John 8:45 | and because I speak the truth, ye do not believe me. | But because I speak the truth, you do not believe me. | But because I tell the truth, you don't believe me. |
John 8:46 | Which of you convinces me of sin? If I speak truth, why do ye not believe me? | Which of *you* convicts me of sin? If I speak the truth, why do you not believe me? | Which of you convicts me of sin? If I tell the truth, why do you not believe me? |
John 8:47 | He that is of God hears the words of God: therefore ye hear [them] not, because ye are not of God. | He who is a child of God listens to God's words. You do not listen to them: and why? It is because you are not God's children." | He who is of God hears the words of God. For this cause you don't hear, because you are not of God." |
John 8:48 | The Jews answered and said to him, Say we not well that thou art a Samaritan and hast a demon? | "Are we not right," answered the Jews, "in saying that you are a Samaritan and are possessed by a demon?" | Then the Jews answered him, "Don't we say well that you are a Samaritan, and have a demon?" |
John 8:49 | Jesus answered, I have not a demon; but I honour my Father, and ye dishonour me. | "I am not possessed by a demon," replied Jesus. "On the contrary I honour my Father, and you dishonour me. | Jesus answered, "I don't have a demon, but I honor my Father, and you dishonor me. |
John 8:50 | But I do not seek my own glory: there is he that seeks and judges. | I, however, am not aiming at glory for myself: there is One who aims at glory for me and who judges. | But I don't seek my own glory. There is one who seeks and judges. |
John 8:51 | Verily, verily, I say unto you, If any one shall keep my word, he shall never see death. | In most solemn truth I tell you that if any one shall have obeyed my teaching he shall in no case ever see death." | Most assuredly, I tell you, if a person keeps my word, he will never see death." |
John 8:52 | The Jews therefore said to him, Now we know that thou hast a demon. Abraham has died, and the prophets, and thou sayest, If any one keep my word, he shall never taste death. | "Now," exclaimed the Jews, "we know that you are possessed by a demon. Abraham died, and so did the Prophets, and yet *you* say, `If any one shall have obeyed my teaching, he shall in no case ever taste death.' | Then the Jews said to him, "Now we know that you have a demon. Abraham died, and the prophets; and you say, 'If a man keeps my word, he will never taste of death.' |
John 8:53 | Art thou greater than our father Abraham, who has died? and the prophets have died: whom makest thou thyself? | Are you really greater than our forefather Abraham? For he died. And the prophets died. Who do you make yourself out to be?" | Are you greater than our father, Abraham, who died? The prophets died. Who do you make yourself out to be?" |
John 8:54 | Jesus answered, If I glorify myself, my glory is nothing: it is my Father who glorifies me, [of] whom ye say, He is our God. | "Were I to glorify myself," answered Jesus, "I should have no real glory. There is One who glorifies me namely my Father, who you say is your God. | Jesus answered, "If I glorify myself, my glory is nothing. It is my Father who glorifies me, of whom you say that he is our God. |
John 8:55 | And ye know him not; but I know him; and if I said, I know him not, I should be like you, a liar. But I know him, and I keep his word. | You do not know Him, but I know Him perfectly; and were I to deny my knowledge of Him, I should resemble you, and be a liar. On the contrary I do know Him, and I obey His commands. | You have not known him, but I know him. If I said, 'I don't know him,' I would be like you, a liar. But I know him, and keep his word. |
John 8:56 | Your father Abraham exulted in that he should see my day, and he saw and rejoiced. | Abraham your forefather exulted in the hope of seeing my day: and he saw it, and was glad." | Your father Abraham rejoiced to see my day. He saw it, and was glad." |
John 8:57 | The Jews therefore said to him, Thou hast not yet fifty years, and hast thou seen Abraham? | "You are not yet fifty years old," cried the Jews, "and have you seen Abraham?" | The Jews therefore said to him, "You are not yet fifty years old, and have you seen Abraham?" |
John 8:58 | Jesus said to them, Verily, verily, I say unto you, Before Abraham was, I am. | "In most solemn truth," answered Jesus, "I tell you that before Abraham came into existence, I am." | Jesus said to them, "Most assuredly, I tell you, before Abraham was born, I AM." |
John 8:59 | They took up therefore stones that they might cast [them] at him; but Jesus hid himself and went out of the temple, [going through the midst of them, and thus passed on.] | Thereupon they took up stones with which to stone Him, but He hid Himself and went away out of the Temple. | They took up stones therefore to throw at him, but Jesus hid himself, and went out of the temple, going through the midst of them, and so passed by. |
