Acts 19:1 | And it came to pass, while Apollos was at Corinth, Paul, having passed through the upper districts, came to Ephesus, and finding certain disciples, | During the stay of Apollos in Corinth, Paul, after passing through the inland districts, came to Ephesus, where he found a few disciples. | And it came to pass, in Apollos` being in Corinth, Paul having gone through the upper parts, came to Ephesus, and having found certain disciples, |
Acts 19:2 | he said to them, Did ye receive [the] Holy Spirit when ye had believed? And they [said] to him, We did not even hear if [the] Holy Spirit was [come]. | "Did you receive the Holy Spirit when you first believed?" he asked them. "No," they replied, "we did not even hear that there is a Holy Spirit." | he said unto them, `The Holy Spirit did ye receive having believed?` and they said unto him, `But we did not even hear whether there is any Holy Spirit;` |
Acts 19:3 | And he said, To what then were ye baptised? And they said, To the baptism of John. | "Into what then were you baptized?" he asked. "Into John's baptism," they replied. | and he said unto them, `To what, then, were ye baptized?` and they said, `To John`s baptism.` |
Acts 19:4 | And Paul said, John indeed baptised [with] the baptism of repentance, saying to the people that they should believe on him that was coming after him, that is, on Jesus. | "John," he said, "administered a baptism of repentance, bidding the people believe on One who was to come after him; namely, on Jesus." | And Paul said, `John, indeed, did baptize with a baptism of reformation, saying to the people that in him who is coming after him they should believe that is, in the Christ Jesus;` |
Acts 19:5 | And when they heard that, they were baptised to the name of the Lord Jesus. | On hearing this, they were baptized into the name of the Lord Jesus; | and they, having heard, were baptized to the name of the Lord Jesus, |
Acts 19:6 | And Paul having laid [his] hands on them, the Holy Spirit came upon them, and they spoke with tongues and prophesied. | and when Paul laid his hands upon them, the Holy Spirit came on them, and they began to speak in tongues and to prophesy. | and Paul having laid on them [his] hands, the Holy Spirit came upon them, they were speaking also with tongues, and prophesying, |
Acts 19:7 | And all the men were about twelve. | They numbered in all about twelve men. | and all the men were, as it were, twelve. |
Acts 19:8 | And entering into the synagogue, he spoke boldly during three months, reasoning and persuading [the things] concerning the kingdom of God. | Afterwards he went into the synagogue. There for three months he continued to preach fearlessly, explaining in words which carried conviction the truths which concern the Kingdom of God. | And having gone into the synagogue, he was speaking boldly for three months, reasoning and persuading the things concerning the reign of God, |
Acts 19:9 | But when some were hardened and disbelieved, speaking evil of the way before the multitude, he left them and separated the disciples, reasoning daily in the school of Tyrannus. | But some grew obstinate in unbelief and spoke evil of the new faith before all the congregation. So Paul left them, and, taking with him those who were disciples, held discussions daily in Tyrannus's lecture-hall. | and when certain were hardened and were disbelieving, speaking evil of the way before the multitude, having departed from them, he did separate the disciples, every day reasoning in the school of a certain Tyrannus. |
Acts 19:10 | And this took place for two years, so that all that inhabited Asia heard the word of the Lord, both Jews and Greeks. | This went on for two years, so that all the inhabitants of the province of Asia, Jews as well as Greeks, heard the Lord's Message. | And this happened for two years so that all those dwelling in Asia did hear the word of the Lord Jesus, both Jews and Greeks, |
Acts 19:11 | And God wrought no ordinary miracles by the hands of Paul, | God also brought about extraordinary miracles through Paul's instrumentality. | mighty works also not common was God working through the hands of Paul, |
Acts 19:12 | so that even napkins or aprons were brought from his body [and put] upon the sick, and the diseases left them, and the wicked spirits went out. | Towels or aprons, for instance, which Paul had handled used to be carried to the sick, and they recovered from their ailments, or the evil spirits left them. | so that even unto the ailing were brought from his body handkerchiefs or aprons, and the sicknesses departed from them; the evil spirits also went forth from them. |
Acts 19:13 | And certain of the Jewish exorcists also, who went about, took in hand to call upon those who had wicked spirits the name of the Lord Jesus, saying, I adjure you by Jesus, whom Paul preaches. | But there were also some wandering Jewish exorcists who undertook to invoke the name of Jesus over those who had the evil spirits, saying, "I command you by that Jesus whom Paul preaches." | And certain of the wandering exorcist Jews, took upon [them] to name over those having the evil spirits the name of the Lord Jesus, saying, `We adjure you by Jesus, whom Paul doth preach;` |
Acts 19:14 | And there were certain [men], seven sons of Sceva, Jewish high priest, who were doing this. | There were seven sons of one Sceva, a Jew of high-priestly family, who were doing this. | and there were certain seven sons of Sceva, a Jew, a chief priest who are doing this thing; |
Acts 19:15 | But the wicked spirit answering said to them, Jesus I know, and Paul I am acquainted with; but *ye*, who are ye? | "Jesus I know," the evil spirit answered, "and Paul I have heard of, but who are you?" | and the evil spirit, answering, said, `Jesus I know, and Paul I am acquainted with; and ye who are ye?` |
Acts 19:16 | And the man in whom the wicked spirit was leaped upon them, and having mastered both, prevailed against them, so that they fled out of that house naked and wounded. | And the man in whom the evil spirit was sprang on two of them, over-mastered them both, and treated them with such violence, that they fled from the house stripped of their clothes and wounded. | And the man, in whom was the evil spirit, leaping upon them, and having overcome them, prevailed against them, so that naked and wounded they did flee out of that house, |
Acts 19:17 | And this became known to all, both Jews and Greeks, who inhabited Ephesus, and fear fell upon all of them, and the name of the Lord Jesus was magnified. | All the people of Ephesus, Jews as well as Greeks, came to know of this. There was widespread terror, and they began to hold the name of the Lord Jesus in high honour. | and this became known to all, both Jews and Greeks, who are dwelling at Ephesus, and fear fell upon them all, and the name of the Lord Jesus was being magnified, |
Acts 19:18 | And many of those that believed came confessing and declaring their deeds. | Many also of those who believed came confessing without reserve what their conduct had been, | many also of those who did believe were coming, confessing and declaring their acts, |
Acts 19:19 | And many of those that practised curious arts brought their books [of charms] and burnt them before all. And they reckoned up the prices of them, and found it fifty thousand pieces of silver. | and not a few of those who had practised magical arts brought their books together and burnt them in the presence of all. The total value was reckoned and found to be 50,000 silver coins. | and many of those who had practised the curious arts, having brought the books together, were burning [them] before all; and they reckoned together the prices of them, and found [it] five myriads of silverlings; |
Acts 19:20 | Thus with might the word of the Lord increased and prevailed. | Thus mightily did the Lord's Message spread and triumph! | so powerfully was the word of God increasing and prevailing. |
Acts 19:21 | And when these things were fulfilled, Paul purposed in his spirit to go to Jerusalem, passing through Macedonia and Achaia, saying, After I have been there I must see Rome also. | When matters had reached this point, Paul decided in his own mind to travel through Macedonia and Greece, and go to Jerusalem. "After that," he said, "I must also see Rome." | And when these things were fulfilled, Paul purposed in the Spirit, having gone through Macedonia and Achaia, to go on to Jerusalem, saying `After my being there, it behoveth me also to see Rome;` |
Acts 19:22 | And having sent into Macedonia two of those ministering to him, Timotheus and Erastus, he remained himself awhile in Asia. | But he sent two of his assistants, Timothy and Erastus, to Macedonia, while he himself remained for a while in Roman Asia. | and having sent to Macedonia two of those ministering to him Timotheus and Erastus he himself stayed a time in Asia. |
Acts 19:23 | And there took place at that time no small disturbance about the way. | Now just at that time there arose no small commotion about the new faith. | And there came, at that time, not a little stir about the way, |
Acts 19:24 | For a certain [man] by name Demetrius, a silver-beater, making silver temples of Artemis, brought no small gain to the artisans; | There was a certain Demetrius, a silversmith, who made miniature silver sanctuaries of Diana, a business which brought great gain to the mechanics in his employ. | for a certain one, Demetrius by name, a worker in silver, making silver sanctuaries of Artemis, was bringing to the artificers gain not a little, |
Acts 19:25 | whom having brought together, and those who wrought in such things, he said, Men, ye know that our well-living arises from this work, | He called his workmen together, and others who were engaged in similar trades, and said to them, "You men well know that our prosperity depends on this business of ours; | whom, having brought in a crowd together, and those who did work about such things, he said, `Men, ye know that by this work we have our wealth; |
Acts 19:26 | and ye see and hear that this Paul has persuaded and turned away a great crowd, not only of Ephesus, but almost of all Asia, saying that they are no gods which are made with hands. | and you see and hear that, not in Ephesus only but throughout almost the whole province of Asia, this fellow Paul has led away a vast number of people by inducing them to believe that they are not gods at all that are made by men's hands. | and ye see and hear, that not only at Ephesus, but almost in all Asia, this Paul, having persuaded, did turn away a great multitude, saying, that they are not gods who are made by hands; |
Acts 19:27 | Now not only there is danger for us that our business come into discredit, but also that the temple of the great goddess Artemis be counted for nothing, and that her greatness should be destroyed whom the whole of Asia and the world reveres. | There is danger, therefore, not only that this our trade will become of no account, but also that the temple of the great goddess Diana will fall into utter disrepute, and that before long she will be actually deposed from her majestic rank she who is now worshipped by the whole province of Asia; nay, by the whole world." | and not only is this department in danger for us of coming into disregard, but also, that of the great goddess Artemis the temple is to be reckoned for nothing, and also her greatness is about to be brought down, whom all Asia and the world doth worship.` |
Acts 19:28 | And having heard [this], and being filled with rage, they cried out, saying, Great [is] Artemis of the Ephesians. | After listening to this harangue, they became furiously angry and kept calling out, "Great is the Ephesian Diana!" | And they having heard, and having become full of wrath, were crying out, saying, `Great [is] the Artemis of the Ephesians!` |
Acts 19:29 | And the [whole] city was filled with confusion, and they rushed with one accord to the theatre, having seized and carried off with [them] Gaius and Aristarchus, Macedonians, fellow-travellers of Paul. | The riot and uproar spread through the whole city, till at last with one accord they rushed into the Theatre, dragging with them Gaius and Aristarchus, two Macedonians who were fellow travellers with Paul. | and the whole city was filled with confusion, they rushed also with one accord into the theatre, having caught Gaius and Aristarchus, Macedonians, Paul`s fellow-travellers. |
Acts 19:30 | But Paul intending to go in to the people, the disciples suffered him not; | Then Paul would have liked to go in and address the people, but the disciples would not let him do so. | And on Paul`s purposing to enter in unto the populace, the disciples were not suffering him, |
Acts 19:31 | and some of the Asiarchs also, who were his friends, sent to him and urged him not to throw himself into the theatre. | A few of the public officials, too, who were friendly to him, sent repeated messages entreating him not to venture into the Theatre. | and certain also of the chief men of Asia, being his friends, having sent unto him, were entreating him not to venture himself into the theatre. |
Acts 19:32 | Different persons therefore cried out some different thing; for the assembly was tumultuous, and the most did not know for what cause they had come together. | The people, meanwhile, kept shouting, some one thing and some another; for the assembly was all uproar and confusion, and the greater part had no idea why they had come together. | Some indeed, therefore, were calling out one thing, and some another, for the assembly was confused, and the greater part did not know for what they were come together; |
Acts 19:33 | But from among the crowd they put forward Alexander, the Jews pushing him forward. And Alexander, beckoning with his hand, would have made a defence to the people. | Then some of the people crowded round Alexander, whom the Jews had pushed forward; and Alexander, motioning with his hand to get silence, was prepared to make a defence to the people. | and out of the multitude they put forward Alexander the Jews thrusting him forward and Alexander having beckoned with the hand, wished to make defence to the populace, |
Acts 19:34 | But, recognising that he was a Jew, there was one cry from all, shouting for about two hours, Great [is] Artemis of the Ephesians. | No sooner, however, did they see that he was a Jew, than there arose from them all one roar of shouting, lasting about two hours. "Great is the Ephesian Diana," they said. | and having known that he is a Jew, one voice came out of all, for about two hours, crying, `Great [is] the Artemis of the Ephesians!` |
Acts 19:35 | And the townclerk, having quieted the crowd, said, Ephesians, what man is there then who does not know that the city of the Ephesians is temple-keeper of Artemis the great, and of the [image] which fell down from heaven? | At length the Recorder quieted them down. "Men of Ephesus," he said, "who is there of all mankind that needs to be told that the city of Ephesus is the guardian of the temple of the great Diana and of the image which fell down from Zeus? | And the public clerk having quieted the multitude, saith, `Men, Ephesians, why, who is the man that doth not know that the city of the Ephesians is a devotee of the great goddess Artemis, and of that which fell down from Zeus? |
Acts 19:36 | These things therefore being undeniable, it is necessary that ye should be calm and do nothing headlong. | These facts, then, being unquestioned, it becomes you to maintain your self-control and not act recklessly. | these things, then, not being to be gainsaid, it is necessary for you to be quiet, and to do nothing rashly. |
Acts 19:37 | For ye have brought these men, [who are] neither temple-plunderers, nor speak injuriously of your goddess. | For you have brought these men here, who are neither robbers of temples nor blasphemers of our goddess. | `For ye brought these men, who are neither temple-robbers nor speaking evil of your goddess; |
Acts 19:38 | If therefore Demetrius and the artisans who [are] with him have a matter against any one, the courts are being held, and there are proconsuls: let them accuse one another. | If, however, Demetrius and the mechanics who support his contention have a grievance against any one, there are Assize-days and there are Proconsuls: let the persons interested accuse one another. | if indeed, therefore, Demetrius and the artificers with him with any one have a matter, court [days] are held, and there are proconsuls; let them accuse one another. |
Acts 19:39 | But if ye inquire anything concerning other matters, it will be settled in the regular assembly. | But if you desire anything further, it will have to be settled in the regular assembly. | `And if ye seek after anything concerning other matters, in the legal assembly it shall be determined; |
Acts 19:40 | For also we are in danger to be put in accusation for sedition for this [affair] of to-day, no cause existing in reference to which we shall be able to give a reason for this concourse. | For in connexion with to-day's proceedings there is danger of our being charged with attempted insurrection, there having been no real reason for this riot; nor shall we be able to justify the behaviour of this disorderly mob." | for we are also in peril of being accused of insurrection in regard to this day, there being no occasion by which we shall be able to give an account of this concourse;` |
