Genesis 34:1And Dinah the daughter of Leah, whom she had borne to Jacob, went out to see the daughters of the land.Dinah, the daughter of Leah, whom she bore to Jacob, went out to see the daughters of the land.Now Dinah, the daughter whom Leah had by Jacob, went out to see the women of that country.
Genesis 34:2And when Shechem, the son of Hamor the Hivite, the prince of the country, saw her, he took her, and lay with her, and humbled her.Shechem the son of Hamor the Hivite, the prince of the land, saw her. He took her, lay with her, and humbled her.And when Shechem, the son of Hamor the Hivite who was the chief of that land, saw her, he took her by force and had connection with her.
Genesis 34:3And his soul fastened on Dinah the daughter of Jacob, and he loved the maiden, and spoke consolingly to the maiden.His soul joined to Dinah, the daughter of Jacob, and he loved the young lady, and spoke kindly to the young lady.Then his heart went out in love to Dinah, the daughter of Jacob, and he said comforting words to her.
Genesis 34:4And Shechem spoke to his father Hamor, saying, Take me this girl as wife.Shechem spoke to his father, Hamor, saying, "Get me this young lady as a wife."And Shechem said to Hamor, his father, Get me this girl for my wife.
Genesis 34:5And Jacob heard that he had defiled Dinah his daughter; but his sons were with his cattle in the fields, and Jacob said nothing until they came.Now Jacob heard that he had defiled Dinah, his daughter; and his sons were with his cattle in the field. Jacob held his peace until they came.Now Jacob had word of what Shechem had done to his daughter; but his sons were in the fields with the cattle, and Jacob said nothing till they came.
Genesis 34:6And Hamor the father of Shechem came out to Jacob, to speak to him.Hamor the father of Shechem went out to Jacob to talk with him.Then Hamor, the father of Shechem, came out to have a talk with Jacob.
Genesis 34:7And the sons of Jacob came from the fields when they heard [it]; and the men were grieved, and they were very angry, because he had wrought what was disgraceful in Israel, in lying with Jacob's daughter, which thing ought not to be done.The sons of Jacob came in from the field when they heard it. The men were grieved, and they were very angry, because he had done folly in Israel in lying with Jacob's daughter; which thing ought not to be done.Now the sons of Jacob came in from the fields when they had news of it, and they were wounded and very angry because of the shame he had done in Israel by having connection with Jacob's daughter; and they said, Such a thing is not to be done.
Genesis 34:8And Hamor spoke to them, saying, My son Shechem's soul cleaves to your daughter: I pray you, give her to him as wife.Hamor talked with them, saying, "The soul of my son, Shechem, longs for your daughter. Please give her to him as a wife.But Hamor said to them, Shechem, my son, is full of desire for your daughter: will you then give her to him for a wife?
Genesis 34:9And make marriages with us: give your daughters to us, and take our daughters to you.Make marriages with us. Give your daughters to us, and take our daughters for yourselves.And let our two peoples be joined together; give your daughters to us, and take our daughters for yourselves.
Genesis 34:10And dwell with us, and the land shall be before you: dwell and trade in it, and get yourselves possessions in it.You shall dwell with us: and the land will be before you. Live and trade in it, and get possessions in it."Go on living with us, and the country will be open to you; do trade and get property there.
Genesis 34:11And Shechem said to her father and to her brethren, Let me find favour in your eyes; and what ye shall say to me I will give.Shechem said to her father and to her brothers, "Let me find favor in your eyes, and whatever you will tell me I will give.And Shechem said to her father and her brothers, If you will give ear to my request, whatever you say I will give to you.
Genesis 34:12Impose on me very much as dowry and gift, and I will give according as ye shall say to me; but give me the maiden as wife.Ask me a great amount for a dowry, and I will give whatever you ask of me, but give me the young lady as a wife."However great you make the bride-price and payment, I will give it; only let me have the girl for my wife.
Genesis 34:13And the sons of Jacob answered Shechem and Hamor his father deceitfully, and spoke because he had defiled Dinah their sisterThe sons of Jacob answered Shechem and Hamor his father with deceit, and spoke, because he had defiled Dinah their sister,But the sons of Jacob gave a false answer to Shechem and Hamor his father, because of what had been done to Dinah their sister.
Genesis 34:14and said to them, We cannot do this, to give our sister to one that is uncircumcised; for that [were] a reproach to us.and said to them, "We can't do this thing, to give our sister to one who is uncircumcised; for that is a reproach to us.And they said, It is not possible for us to give our sister to one who is without circumcision, for that would be a cause of shame to us:
Genesis 34:15But only in this will we consent to you, if ye will be as we, that every male of you be circumcised;Only on this condition will we consent to you. If you will be as we are, that every male of you be circumcised;But on this condition only will we come to an agreement with you: if every male among you becomes like us and undergoes circumcision;
Genesis 34:16then will we give our daughters to you, and take your daughters to us, and we will dwell with you, and be one people.then will we give our daughters to you, and we will take your daughters to us, and we will dwell with you, and we will become one people.Then we will give our daughters to you and take your daughters to us and go on living with you as one people.
Genesis 34:17But if ye do not hearken to us, to be circumcised, then will we take our daughter and go away.But if you will not listen to us, to be circumcised, then we will take our sister, and we will be gone.But if you will not undergo circumcision as we say, then we will take our daughter and go.
Genesis 34:18And their words were good in the eyes of Hamor and Shechem, Hamor's son.Their words pleased Hamor, and Shechem, Hamor's son.And their words were pleasing to Hamor and his son Shechem.
Genesis 34:19And the youth did not delay to do this, because he had delight in Jacob's daughter. And he was honourable above all in the house of his father.The young man didn't wait to do this thing, because he had delight in Jacob's daughter, and he was honored above all the house of his father.And without loss of time the young man did as they said, because he had delight in Jacob's daughter, and he was the noblest of his father's house.
Genesis 34:20And Hamor and Shechem his son came to the gate of their city, and spoke to the men of their city, saying,Hamor and Shechem, his son, came to the gate of their city, and talked with the men of their city, saying,Then Hamor and Shechem, his son, went to the meeting-place of their town, and said to the men of the town,
Genesis 34:21These men are peaceable with us; therefore let them dwell in the land, and trade in it. And the land behold, it is of wide extent before them. We will take their daughters as wives, and give them our daughters."These men are peaceful with us. Therefore let them live in the land and trade in it. For, behold, the land is large enough for them. Let us take their daughters to us for wives, and let us give them our daughters.It is the desire of these men to be at peace with us; let them then go on living in this country and doing trade here, for the country is wide open before them; let us take their daughters as wives and let us give them our daughters.
Genesis 34:22But only in this will the men consent to us to dwell with us, to be one people if every male among us be circumcised, just as they are circumcised.Only on this condition will the men consent to us to dwell with us, to become one people, if every male among us be circumcised, as they are circumcised.But these men will make an agreement with us to go on living with us and to become one people, only on the condition that every male among us undergoes circumcision as they have done.
Genesis 34:23Their cattle, and their possessions, and every beast of theirs, shall they not be ours? only let us consent to them, and they will dwell with us.Won't their cattle and their substance and all their animals be ours? Only let us give our consent to them, and they will dwell with us."Then will not their cattle and their goods and all their beasts be ours? so let us come to an agreement with them so that they may go on living with us.
Genesis 34:24And all that went out at the gate of his city hearkened to Hamor and to Shechem his son; and every male was circumcised all that went out at the gate of his city.All who went out of the gate of his city listened to Hamor, and to Shechem his son; and every male was circumcised, all who went out of the gate of his city.Then all the men of the town gave ear to the words of Hamor and Shechem his son; and every male in the town underwent circumcision.
Genesis 34:25And it came to pass on the third day, when they were sore, that two of the sons of Jacob, Simeon and Levi, Dinah's brethren, took each his sword, and came upon the city boldly, and slew all the males.It happened on the third day, when they were sore, that two of Jacob's sons, Simeon and Levi, Dinah's brothers, each took his sword, came upon the unsuspecting city, and killed all the males.But on the third day after, before the wounds were well, two of the sons of Jacob, Simeon and Levi, Dinah's brothers, took their swords and came into the town by surprise and put all the males to death.
Genesis 34:26And Hamor and Shechem his son they slew with the edge of the sword; and took Dinah out of Shechem's house; and went out.They killed Hamor and Shechem, his son, with the edge of the sword, and took Dinah out of Shechem's house, and went away.And Hamor and his son they put to death with the sword, and they took Dinah from Shechem's house and went away.
Genesis 34:27The sons of Jacob came upon the slain, and plundered the city, because they had defiled their sister.Jacob's sons came on the dead, and plundered the city, because they had defiled their sister.And the sons of Jacob came on them when they were wounded and made waste the town because of what had been done to their sister;
Genesis 34:28Their sheep, and their oxen, and their asses, and what [was] in the city, and what [was] in the field they took;They took their flocks, their herds, their donkeys, that which was in the city, that which was in the field;They took their flocks and their herds and their asses and everything in their town and in their fields,
Genesis 34:29and all their goods, and all their little ones, and their wives took they captive, and plundered them, and all that was in the houses.and all their wealth. They took captive all their little ones and their wives, and took as plunder everything that was in the house.And all their wealth and all their little ones and their wives; everything in their houses they took and made them waste.
Genesis 34:30And Jacob said to Simeon and Levi, Ye have troubled me, in that ye make me odious among the inhabitants of the land among the Canaanites and the Perizzites; and I am few men in number, and they will gather themselves against me and smite me, and I shall be destroyed, I and my house.Jacob said to Simeon and Levi, "You have troubled me, to make me odious to the inhabitants of the land, among the Canaanites and the Perizzites. I am few in number. They will gather themselves together against me and strike me, and I will be destroyed, I and my house."And Jacob said to Simeon and Levi, You have made trouble for me and given me a bad name among the people of this country, among the Canaanites and the Perizzites: and because we are small in number they will come together against me and make war on me; and it will be the end of me and all my people.
Genesis 34:31And they said, Should people deal with our sister as with a harlot?They said, "Should he deal with our sister as with a prostitute?"But they said, Were we to let him make use of our sister as a loose woman?
