John 11:1 | Now there was a certain [man] sick, Lazarus of Bethany, of the village of Mary and Martha her sister. | Now a certain man was sick, Lazarus of Bethany, of the village of Mary and her sister, Martha. | Now a certain man named Lazarus was ill; he was of Bethany, the town of Mary and her sister Martha. |
John 11:2 | It was [the] Mary who anointed the Lord with ointment and wiped his feet with her hair, whose brother Lazarus was sick. | It was that Mary who anointed the Lord with ointment, and wiped his feet with her hair, whose brother, Lazarus, was sick. | (The Mary whose brother Lazarus was ill, was the Mary who put perfumed oil on the Lord and made his feet dry with her hair.) |
John 11:3 | The sisters therefore sent to him, saying, Lord, behold, he whom thou lovest is sick. | The sisters therefore sent to him, saying, "Lord, behold, he for whom you have great affection is sick." | So the sisters sent to him, saying, Lord, your dear friend is ill. |
John 11:4 | But when Jesus heard [it], he said, This sickness is not unto death, but for the glory of God, that the Son of God may be glorified by it. | But when Jesus heard it, he said, "This sickness is not to death, but for the glory of God, that God's Son may be glorified by it." | When this came to his ears, Jesus said, The end of this disease is not death, but the glory of God, so that the Son of God may have glory because of it. |
John 11:5 | Now Jesus loved Martha, and her sister, and Lazarus. | Now Jesus loved Martha, and her sister, and Lazarus. | Now Jesus had love in his heart for Martha and her sister and Lazarus. |
John 11:6 | When therefore he heard, He is sick, he remained two days then in the place where he was. | When therefore he heard that he was sick, he stayed at that time two days in the place where he was. | So when the news came to him that Lazarus was ill, he did not go from the place where he was for two days. |
John 11:7 | Then after this he says to his disciples, Let us go into Judaea again. | Then after this he said to the disciples, "Let's go into Judea again." | Then after that time he said to his disciples, Let us go into Judaea again. |
John 11:8 | The disciples say to him, Rabbi, [even but] now the Jews sought to stone thee, and goest thou thither again? | The disciples told him, "Rabbi, the Jews were just trying to stone you, and are you going there again?" | The disciples said to him, Master, the Jews were attempting only the other day to have you stoned, and are you going back there again? |
John 11:9 | Jesus answered, Are there not twelve hours in the day? If any one walk in the day, he does not stumble, because he sees the light of this world; | Jesus answered, "Aren't there twelve hours of daylight? If a man walks in the day, he doesn't stumble, because he sees the light of this world. | Then Jesus said in answer, Are there not twelve hours in the day? A man may go about in the day without falling, because he sees the light of this world. |
John 11:10 | but if any one walk in the night, he stumbles, because the light is not in him. | But if a man walks in the night, he stumbles, because the light isn't in him." | But if a man goes about in the night, he may have a fall because the light is not in him. |
John 11:11 | These things said he; and after this he says to them, Lazarus, our friend, is fallen asleep, but I go that I may awake him out of sleep. | He said these things, and after that, he said to them, "Our friend, Lazarus, has fallen asleep, but I am going so that I may awake him out of sleep." | These things said he: and after that he said to them, Lazarus our friend is at rest; but I go so that I may make him come out of his sleep. |
John 11:12 | The disciples therefore said to him, Lord, if he be fallen asleep, he will get well. | The disciples therefore said to him, "Lord, if he has fallen asleep, he will recover." | Then his disciples said to him, Lord, if he is resting he will get well. |
John 11:13 | But Jesus spoke of his death, but *they* thought that he spoke of the rest of sleep. | Now Jesus had spoken of his death, but they thought that he spoke of taking rest in sleep. | Jesus, however, was talking of his death: but they had the idea that he was talking about taking rest in sleep. |
John 11:14 | Jesus therefore then said to them plainly, Lazarus has died. | So Jesus said to them plainly then, "Lazarus is dead. | Then Jesus said to them clearly, Lazarus is dead. |
John 11:15 | And I rejoice on your account that I was not there, in order that ye may believe. But let us go to him. | I am glad for your sakes that I was not there, so that you may believe. Nevertheless, let's go to him." | And because of you I am glad I was not there, so that you may have faith; but let us go to him. |
John 11:16 | Thomas therefore, called Didymus, said to his fellow disciples, Let *us* also go, that we may die with him. | Thomas therefore, who is called Didymus, said to his fellow disciples, "Let's go also, that we may die with him." | Then Thomas, who was named Didymus, said to the other disciples, Let us go so that we may be with him in death. |
John 11:17 | Jesus therefore [on] arriving found him to have been four days already in the tomb. | So when Jesus came, he found that he had been in the tomb four days already. | Now when Jesus came, he made the discovery that Lazarus had been put into the earth four days before. |
John 11:18 | Now Bethany was near Jerusalem, about fifteen stadia off, | Now Bethany was near Jerusalem, about fifteen stadia away. | Now Bethany was near to Jerusalem, about two miles away; |
John 11:19 | and many of the Jews came to Martha and Mary, that they might console them concerning their brother. | Many of the Jews had come to Martha and Mary, to console them concerning their brother. | And a number of Jews had come to Martha and Mary to give them comfort about their brother. |
John 11:20 | Martha then, when she heard Jesus is coming, went to meet him; but Mary sat in the house. | Therefore Martha, when she heard that Jesus was coming, went and met him, but Mary stayed in the house. | When Martha had the news that Jesus was on the way, she went out to him, but Mary did not go from the house. |
John 11:21 | Martha therefore said to Jesus, Lord, if thou hadst been here, my brother had not died; | Therefore Martha said to Jesus, "Lord, if you would have been here, my brother wouldn't have died. | Then Martha said to Jesus, Lord, if you had been here my brother would not be dead. |
John 11:22 | but even now I know, that whatsoever thou shalt ask of God, God will give thee. | Even now I know that, whatever you ask of God, God will give you." | But I am certain that, even now, whatever request you make to God, God will give it to you. |
John 11:23 | Jesus says to her, Thy brother shall rise again. | Jesus said to her, "Your brother will rise again." | Jesus said to her, Your brother will come to life again. |
John 11:24 | Martha says to him, I know that he will rise again in the resurrection in the last day. | Martha said to him, "I know that he will rise again in the resurrection at the last day." | Martha said to him, I am certain that he will come to life again when all come back from the dead at the last day. |
John 11:25 | Jesus said to her, I am the resurrection and the life: he that believes on me, though he have died, shall live; | Jesus said to her, "I am the resurrection and the life. He who believes in me, though he die, yet will he live. | Jesus said to her, I am myself that day and that life; he who has faith in me will have life even if he is dead; |
John 11:26 | and every one who lives and believes on me shall never die. Believest thou this? | Whoever lives and believes in me will never die. Do you believe this?" | And no one who is living and has faith in me will ever see death. Is this your faith? |
John 11:27 | She says to him, Yea, Lord; I believe that thou art the Christ, the Son of God, who should come into the world. | She said to him, "Yes, Lord. I have come to believe that you are the Christ, God's Son, he who comes into the world." | She said to him, Yes, Lord: my faith is that you are the Christ, the Son of God, who was to come into the world. |
John 11:28 | And having said this, she went away and called her sister Mary secretly, saying, The teacher is come and calls thee. | When she had said this, she went away, and called Mary, her sister, secretly, saying, "The Teacher is here, and is calling you." | And having said this, she went away and said secretly to her sister Mary, The Master is here and has sent for you. |
John 11:29 | She, when she heard [that], rises up quickly and comes to him. | She, when she heard this, arose quickly, and went to him. | And Mary, hearing this, got up quickly and went to him. |
John 11:30 | Now Jesus had not yet come into the village, but was in the place where Martha came to meet him. | Now Jesus had not yet come into the village, but was in the place where Martha met him. | Now Jesus had not at this time come into the town, but was still in the place where Martha had seen him. |
John 11:31 | The Jews therefore who were with her in the house and consoling her, seeing Mary that she rose up quickly and went out, followed her, saying, She goes to the tomb, that she may weep there. | Then the Jews who were with her in the house, and were consoling her, when they saw Mary, that she rose up quickly and went out, followed her, saying, "She is going to the tomb to weep there." | Then the Jews who were with her in the house, comforting her, when they saw Mary get up quickly and go out, went after her in the belief that she was going to the place of the dead and would be weeping there. |
John 11:32 | Mary therefore, when she came where Jesus was, seeing him, fell at his feet, saying to him, Lord, if thou hadst been here, my brother had not died. | Mary therefore, when she came to where Jesus was, and saw him, fell down at his feet, saying to him, "Lord, if you would have been here, my brother wouldn't have died." | When Mary came to where Jesus was and saw him, she went down at his feet, saying, Lord, if you had been here my brother would not be dead. |
John 11:33 | Jesus therefore, when he saw her weeping, and the Jews who came with her weeping, was deeply moved in spirit, and was troubled, | When Jesus therefore saw her weeping, and the Jews weeping who came with her, he groaned in the spirit, and was troubled, | And when Jesus saw her weeping, and saw the Jews weeping who came with her, his spirit was moved and he was troubled, |
John 11:34 | and said, Where have ye put him? They say to him, Lord, come and see. | and said, "Where have you laid him?" They told him, "Lord, come and see." | And said, Where have you put him? They said, Come and see, Lord. |
John 11:35 | Jesus wept. | Jesus wept. | And Jesus himself was weeping. |
John 11:36 | The Jews therefore said, Behold how he loved him! | The Jews therefore said, "See how much affection he had for him!" | So the Jews said, See how dear he was to him! |
John 11:37 | And some of them said, Could not this [man], who has opened the eyes of the blind [man], have caused that this [man] also should not have died? | Some of them said, "Couldn't this man, who opened the eyes of him who was blind, have also caused that this man wouldn't die?" | But some of them said, This man, who made open the eyes of the blind man, was he not able to keep his friend from death? |
John 11:38 | Jesus therefore, again deeply moved in himself, comes to the tomb. Now it was a cave, and a stone lay upon it. | Jesus therefore, again groaning in himself, came to the tomb. Now it was a cave, and a stone lay against it. | So Jesus, deeply troubled in heart, came to the place of the dead. It was a hole in the rock, and a stone was over the opening. |
John 11:39 | Jesus says, Take away the stone. Martha, the sister of the dead, says to him, Lord, he stinks already, for he is four days [there]. | Jesus said, "Take away the stone." Martha, the sister of him who was dead, said to him, "Lord, by this time there is a stench, for he has been dead four days." | Jesus said, Take away the stone. Martha, the sister of him who was dead, said, Lord, by this time the body will be smelling, for he has been dead four days. |
John 11:40 | Jesus says to her, Did I not say to thee, that if thou shouldest believe, thou shouldest see the glory of God? | Jesus said to her, "Didn't I tell you that if you believed, you would see God's glory?" | Jesus said to her, Did I not say to you that if you had faith you would see the glory of God? |
John 11:41 | They took therefore the stone away. And Jesus lifted up his eyes on high and said, Father, I thank thee that thou hast heard me; | So they took away the stone from the place where the dead man was lying. Jesus lifted up his eyes, and said, "Father, I thank you that you listened to me. | So they took away the stone. And Jesus, looking up to heaven, said, Father, I give praise to you for hearing me. |
John 11:42 | but I knew that thou always hearest me; but on account of the crowd who stand around I have said [it], that they may believe that thou hast sent me. | I know that you always listen to me, but because of the multitude that stands around I said this, that they may believe that you sent me." | I was certain that your ears are at all times open to me, but I said it because of these who are here, so that they may see that you sent me. |
John 11:43 | And having said this, he cried with a loud voice, Lazarus, come forth. | When he had said this, he cried with a loud voice, "Lazarus, come out!" | Then he said in a loud voice, Lazarus, come out! |
John 11:44 | And the dead came forth, bound feet and hands with graveclothes, and his face was bound round with a handkerchief. Jesus says to them, Loose him and let him go. | He who was dead came out, bound hand and foot with wrappings, and his face was wrapped around with a cloth. Jesus said to them, "Free him, and let him go." | And he who was dead came out, with linen bands folded tightly about his hands and feet, and a cloth about his face. Jesus said to them, Make him free and let him go. |
John 11:45 | Many therefore of the Jews who came to Mary and saw what he had done, believed on him; | Therefore many of the Jews, who came to Mary and saw that which Jesus did, believed in him. | Then a number of the Jews who had come to Mary and had seen the things which Jesus did had belief in him. |
John 11:46 | but some of them went to the Pharisees and told them what Jesus had done. | But some of them went away to the Pharisees, and told them the things which Jesus had done. | But some of them went to the Pharisees with the news of what Jesus had done. |
John 11:47 | The chief priests, therefore, and the Pharisees gathered a council, and said, What do we? for this man does many signs. | The chief priests therefore and the Pharisees gathered a council, and said, "What are we doing? For this man does many signs. | Then the high priests and the Pharisees had a meeting and said, What are we doing? This man is doing a number of signs. |
John 11:48 | If we let him thus alone, all will believe on him, and the Romans will come and take away both our place and our nation. | If we leave him alone like this, everyone will believe in him, and the Romans will come and take away both our place and our nation." | If we let him go on in this way, everybody will have belief in him and the Romans will come and take away our place and our nation. |
John 11:49 | But a certain one of them, Caiaphas, being high priest that year, said to them, Ye know nothing | But a certain one of them, Caiaphas, being high priest that year, said to them, "You know nothing at all, | But one of them, Caiaphas, who was high priest that year, said to them, You have no knowledge of anything; |
John 11:50 | nor consider that it is profitable for you that one man die for the people, and not that the whole nation perish. | nor do you take account that it is advantageous for us that one man should die for the people, and that the whole nation not perish." | You do not see that it is in your interest for one man to be put to death for the people, so that all the nation may not come to destruction. |
John 11:51 | But this he did not say of himself; but, being high priest that year, prophesied that Jesus was going to die for the nation; | Now he didn't say this of himself, but being high priest that year, he prophesied that Jesus would die for the nation, | He did not say this of himself, but being the high priest that year he said, as a prophet, that Jesus would be put to death for the nation; |
John 11:52 | and not for the nation only, but that he should also gather together into one the children of God who were scattered abroad. | and not for the nation only, but that he might also gather together into one the children of God who are scattered abroad. | And not for that nation only, but for the purpose of uniting in one body the children of God all over the world. |
John 11:53 | From that day therefore they took counsel that they might kill him. | So from that day forth they took counsel that they might put him to death. | And from that day they took thought together how to put him to death. |
John 11:54 | Jesus therefore walked no longer openly among the Jews, but went away thence into the country near the desert, to a city called Ephraim, and there he sojourned with the disciples. | Jesus therefore walked no more openly among the Jews, but departed from there into the country near the wilderness, into a city called Ephraim. He stayed there with his disciples. | So Jesus no longer went about publicly among the Jews, but went from there into the country near to the waste land, to a town named Ephraim, where he was for some time with the disciples. |
John 11:55 | But the passover of the Jews was near, and many went up to Jerusalem out of the country before the passover, that they might purify themselves. | Now the Passover of the Jews was at hand. Many went up to Jerusalem out of the country before the Passover, to purify themselves. | Now the Passover of the Jews was near, and numbers of people went up from the country to Jerusalem to make themselves clean before the Passover. |
John 11:56 | They sought therefore Jesus, and said among themselves, standing in the temple, What do ye think? that he will not come to the feast? | Then they sought for Jesus and spoke one with another, as they stood in the temple, "What do you think? Isn't he coming to the feast?" | They were looking for Jesus and saying to one another while they were in the Temple, What is your opinion? Will he not come to the feast? |
John 11:57 | Now the chief priests and the Pharisees had given commandment that if any one knew where he was, he should make it known, that they might take him. | Now the chief priests and the Pharisees had commanded that if anyone knew where he was, he should report it, that they might seize him. | Now the chief priests and the Pharisees had given orders that if anyone had knowledge where he was, he was to give them word, so that they might take him. |
