Matthew 19:1 | And it came to pass, when Jesus had finished these words, he withdrew from Galilee, and came to the coasts of Judaea beyond the Jordan; | It happened when Jesus had finished these words, he departed from Galilee, and came into the borders of Judea beyond the Jordan. | And it came about that after saying these words, Jesus went away from Galilee, and came into the parts of Judaea on the other side of Jordan. |
Matthew 19:2 | and great crowds followed him, and he healed them there. | Great multitudes followed him, and he healed them there. | And a great number went after him; and he made them well there. |
Matthew 19:3 | And the Pharisees came to him tempting him, and saying, Is it lawful for a man to put away his wife for every cause? | Pharisees came to him, testing him, and saying, "Is it lawful for a man to divorce his wife for any reason?" | And certain Pharisees came to him, testing him, and saying, Is it right for a man to put away his wife for every cause? |
Matthew 19:4 | But he answering said [to them], Have ye not read that he who made [them], from the beginning made them male and female, | He answered, "Haven't you read that he who made them from the beginning made them male and female, | And he said in answer, Have you not seen in the Writings, that he who made them at the first made them male and female, and said, |
Matthew 19:5 | and said, On account of this a man shall leave father and mother, and shall be united to his wife, and the two shall be one flesh? | and said, 'For this cause a man will leave his father and mother, and will join to his wife; and the two will become one flesh?' | For this cause will a man go away from his father and mother, and be joined to his wife; and the two will become one flesh? |
Matthew 19:6 | so that they are no longer two, but one flesh. What therefore God has joined together, let not man separate. | So that they are no more two, but one flesh. What therefore God has joined together, don't let man tear apart." | So that they are no longer two, but one flesh. Then let not that which has been joined by God be parted by man. |
Matthew 19:7 | They say to him, Why then did Moses command to give a letter of divorce and to send [her] away? | They asked him, "Why then did Moses command us to give her a bill of divorce, and divorce her?" | They say to him, Why then did Moses give orders that a husband might give her a statement in writing and be free from her? |
Matthew 19:8 | He says to them, Moses, in view of your hardheartedness, allowed you to put away your wives; but from the beginning it was not thus. | He said to them, "Moses, because of the hardness of your hearts, allowed you to divorce your wives, but from the beginning it has not been so. | He says to them, Moses, because of your hard hearts, let you put away your wives: but it has not been so from the first. |
Matthew 19:9 | But I say unto you, that whosoever shall put away his wife, not for fornication, and shall marry another, commits adultery; and he who marries one put away commits adultery. | I tell you that whoever will put away his wife, except for sexual immorality, and will marry another, commits adultery; and he who marries her when she is put away commits adultery." | And I say to you, Whoever puts away his wife for any other cause than the loss of her virtue, and takes another, is a false husband: and he who takes her as his wife when she is put away, is no true husband to her. |
Matthew 19:10 | His disciples say to him, If the case of the man be so with his wife, it is not good to marry. | His disciples said to him, "If this is the case of the man with his wife, it is not expedient to marry." | The disciples say to him, If this is the position of a man in relation to his wife, it is better not to be married. |
Matthew 19:11 | And he said to them, All cannot receive this word, but those to whom it has been given; | But he said to them, "Not all men can receive this saying, but they to whom it is given. | But he said to them, Not all men are able to take in this saying, but only those to whom it is given. |
Matthew 19:12 | for there are eunuchs which have been born thus from [their] mother's womb; and there are eunuchs who have been made eunuchs of men; and there are eunuchs who have made eunuchs of themselves for the sake of the kingdom of the heavens. He that is able to receive [it], let him receive [it]. | For there are eunuchs, who were born that way from their mother's womb, and there are eunuchs, who were made eunuchs by men: and there are eunuchs who made themselves eunuchs for the Kingdom of Heaven's sake. He who is able to receive it, let him receive it." | For there are men who, from birth, were without sex: and there are some who were made so by men: and there are others who have made themselves so for the kingdom of heaven. He who is able to take it, let him take it. |
Matthew 19:13 | Then there were brought to him little children that he might lay his hands on them and pray; but the disciples rebuked them. | Then little children were brought to him, that he should lay his hands on them, and pray; and the disciples rebuked them. | Then some people took little children to him, so that he might put his hands on them in blessing: and the disciples said sharp words to them. |
Matthew 19:14 | But Jesus said, Suffer little children, and do not hinder them from coming to me; for the kingdom of the heavens is of such: | But Jesus said, "Allow the little children, and don't forbid them to come to me; for to such belongs the Kingdom of Heaven." | But Jesus said, Let the little ones come to me, and do not keep them away: for of such is the kingdom of heaven. |
Matthew 19:15 | and having laid his hands upon them, he departed thence. | He laid his hands on them, and departed there. | And he put his hands on them, and went away. |
Matthew 19:16 | And lo, one coming up said to him, Teacher, what good thing shall I do that I may have life eternal? | Behold, one came to him and said, "Good teacher, what good thing shall I do, that I may have eternal life?" | And one came to him and said, Master, what good thing have I to do, so that I may have eternal life? |
Matthew 19:17 | And he said to him, What askest thou me concerning goodness? one is good. But if thou wouldest enter into life, keep the commandments. | He said to him, "Why do you call me good? No one is good but one, that is, God. But if you want to enter into life, keep the commandments." | And he said to him, Why are you questioning me about what is good? One there is who is good: but if you have a desire to go into life, keep the rules of the law. |
Matthew 19:18 | He says to him, Which? And Jesus said, Thou shalt not kill, Thou shalt not commit adultery, Thou shalt not steal, Thou shalt not bear false witness, | He said to him, "Which ones?" Jesus said, "You shall not kill. You shall not commit adultery. You shall not steal. You shall not offer false testimony. | He says to him, Which? And Jesus said, Do not put anyone to death, Do not be untrue in married life, Do not take what is not yours, Do not give false witness, |
Matthew 19:19 | Honour thy father and thy mother, and Thou shalt love thy neighbour as thyself. | Honor your father and mother. And, you shall love your neighbor as yourself." | Give honour to your father and your mother: and, Have love for your neighbour as for yourself. |
Matthew 19:20 | The young man says to him, All these have I kept; what lack I yet? | The young man said to him, "All these things I have observed from my youth. What do I still lack?" | The young man says to him, All these things have I done: what more is there? |
Matthew 19:21 | Jesus said to him, If thou wouldest be perfect, go, sell what thou hast and give to [the] poor, and thou shalt have treasure in heaven; and come, follow me. | Jesus said to him, "If you want to be perfect, go, sell what you have, and give to the poor, and you will have treasure in heaven; and come, follow me." | Jesus said to him, If you have a desire to be complete, go, get money for your property, and give it to the poor, and you will have wealth in heaven: and come after me. |
Matthew 19:22 | But the young man, having heard the word, went away grieved, for he had large possessions. | But when the young man heard the saying, he went away sad, for he was one who had great possessions. | But hearing these words the young man went away sorrowing: for he had much property. |
Matthew 19:23 | And Jesus said to his disciples, Verily I say unto you, A rich man shall with difficulty enter into the kingdom of the heavens; | Jesus said to his disciples, "Most assuredly I say to you, a rich man will enter into the Kingdom of Heaven with difficulty. | And Jesus said to his disciples, Truly I say to you, It is hard for a man with much money to go into the kingdom of heaven. |
Matthew 19:24 | and again I say unto you, It is easier for a camel to enter a needle's eye than a rich man into the kingdom of God. | Again I tell you, it is easier for a camel to go through a needle's eye, than for a rich man to enter into the kingdom of God." | And again I say to you, It is simpler for a camel to go through a needle's eye, than for a man with much money to go into the kingdom of God. |
Matthew 19:25 | And when the disciples heard [it] they were exceedingly astonished, saying, Who then can be saved? | When the disciples heard it, they were exceedingly astonished, saying, "Who then can be saved?" | And the disciples, hearing this, were greatly surprised, saying, Who then may have salvation? |
Matthew 19:26 | But Jesus, looking on [them], said to them, With men this is impossible; but with God all things are possible. | Looking at them, Jesus said, "With men this is impossible; but with God all things are possible." | And Jesus, looking at them, said, With men this is not possible; but with God all things are possible. |
Matthew 19:27 | Then Peter answering said to him, Behold, *we* have left all things and have followed thee; what then shall happen to us? | Then Peter answered, "Behold, we have left everything, and followed you. What then will we have?" | Then Peter said to him, See, we have given up everything and have come after you; what then will we have? |
Matthew 19:28 | And Jesus said to them, Verily I say unto you, That *ye* who have followed me, in the regeneration when the Son of man shall sit down upon his throne of glory, *ye* also shall sit on twelve thrones, judging the twelve tribes of Israel. | Jesus said to them, "Most assuredly I tell you, that you who have followed me, in the regeneration when the Son of Man will sit on the throne of his glory, you also will sit on twelve thrones, judging the twelve tribes of Israel. | And Jesus said to them, Truly I say to you that in the time when all things are made new, and the Son of man is seated in his glory, you who have come after me will be seated on twelve seats, judging the twelve tribes of Israel. |
Matthew 19:29 | And every one who has left houses, or brethren, or sisters, or father, or mother, or wife, or children, or lands, for my name's sake, shall receive a hundredfold, and shall inherit life eternal. | Everyone who has left houses, or brothers, or sisters, or father, or mother, or wife, or children, or lands, for my name's sake, will receive one hundred times, and will inherit eternal life. | And everyone who has given up houses, or brothers, or sisters, or father, or mother, or child, or land, for my name, will be given a hundred times as much, and have eternal life. |
Matthew 19:30 | But many first shall be last, and last first. | But many will be last who are first; and first who are last. | But a great number who are first will be last, and some who are last will be first. |
