Matthew 14:1At that time Herod the tetrarch heard of the fame of Jesus,At that time, Herod, the tetrarch, heard the report concerning Jesus,At the time Herod the Tetrarch heard the fame of Jesus.
Matthew 14:2and said to his servants, This is John the baptist: *he* is risen from the dead, and because of this these works of power display their force in him.and said to his servants, "This is John the Baptizer. He is risen from the dead. That is why these powers work in him."And he said to his servants: This is John the Baptist: he is risen from the dead, and therefore mighty works shew forth themselves in him.
Matthew 14:3For Herod had seized John, and had bound him and put him in prison on account of Herodias the wife of Philip his brother.For Herod had laid hold of John, and bound him, and put him in prison for the sake of Herodias, his brother Philip's wife.For Herod had apprehended John and bound him, and put him into prison, because of Herodias, his brother's wife.
Matthew 14:4For John said to him, It is not lawful for thee to have her.For John said to him, "It is not lawful for you to have her."For John said to him: It is not lawful for thee to have her.
Matthew 14:5And [while] desiring to kill him, he feared the crowd, because they held him for a prophet.When he would have put him to death, he feared the multitude, because they counted him as a prophet.And having a mind to put him to death, he feared the people: because they esteemed him as a prophet.
Matthew 14:6But when Herod's birthday was celebrated, the daughter of Herodias danced before them, and pleased Herod;But when Herod's birthday came, the daughter of Herodias danced in the midst, and pleased Herod.But on Herod's birthday, the daughter of Herodias danced before them: and pleased Herod.
Matthew 14:7whereupon he promised with oath to give her whatsoever she should ask.Whereupon he promised with an oath to give her whatever she should ask.Whereupon he promised with an oath, to give her whatsoever she would ask of him.
Matthew 14:8But she, being set on by her mother, says, Give me here upon a dish the head of John the baptist.She, being put forward by her mother, said, "Give me here on a platter the head of John the Baptizer."But she being instructed before by her mother, said: Give me here in a dish the head of John the Baptist.
Matthew 14:9And the king was grieved; but on account of the oaths, and those lying at table with [him], he commanded [it] to be given.The king was grieved, but for the sake of his oaths, and of those who sat at the table with him, he commanded it to be given,And the king was struck sad: yet because of his oath, and for them that sat with him at table, he commanded it to be given.
Matthew 14:10And he sent and beheaded John in the prison;and he sent and beheaded John in the prison.And he sent, and beheaded John in the prison.
Matthew 14:11and his head was brought upon a dish, and was given to the damsel, and she carried [it] to her mother.His head was brought on a platter, and given to the young lady: and she brought it to her mother.And his head was brought in a dish: and it was given to the damsel, and she brought it to her mother.
Matthew 14:12And his disciples came and took the body and buried it, and came and brought word to Jesus.His disciples came, and took up the body, and buried it; and they went and told Jesus.And his disciples came and took the body, and buried it, and came and told Jesus.
Matthew 14:13And Jesus, having heard it, went away thence by ship to a desert place apart. And the crowds having heard [of it] followed him on foot from the cities.Now when Jesus heard this, he withdrew from there in a boat, to a desert place apart. When the multitudes heard it, they followed him on foot from the cities.Which when Jesus had heard, he retired from thence by boat, into a desert place apart, and the multitudes having heard of it, followed him on foot out of the cities.
Matthew 14:14And going out he saw a great crowd, and was moved with compassion about them, and healed their infirm.Jesus went out, and he saw a great multitude. He had compassion on them, and healed their sick.And he coming forth saw a great multitude, and had compassion on them, and healed their sick.
Matthew 14:15But when even was come, his disciples came to him saying, The place is desert, and [much of] the [day] time already gone by; dismiss the crowds, that they may go into the villages and buy food for themselves.When evening had come, his disciples came to him, saying, "The place is a desert, and the time is already past. Send the multitudes away, that they may go into the villages, and buy themselves food."And when it was evening, his disciples came to him, saying: This is a desert place, and the hour is now past: send away the multitudes, that going into the towns, they may buy themselves victuals.
Matthew 14:16But Jesus said to them, They have no need to go: give *ye* them to eat.But Jesus said to them, "They don't need to go away. You give them something to eat."But Jesus said to them, They have no need to go: give you them to eat.
Matthew 14:17But they say to him, We have not here save five loaves and two fishes.They told him, "We only have here five loaves and two fish."They answered him: We have not here, but five loaves, and two fishes.
Matthew 14:18And he said, Bring them here to me.He said, "Bring them here to me."He said to them: Bring them hither to me.
Matthew 14:19And having commanded the crowds to recline upon the grass, having taken the five loaves and the two fishes, he looked up to heaven, and blessed: and having broken the loaves, he gave [them] to the disciples, and the disciples [gave them] to the crowds.He commanded the multitudes to sit down on the grass; and he took the five loaves and the two fish, and looking up to heaven, he blessed, broke and gave the loaves to the disciples, and the disciples to the multitudes.And when he had commanded the multitudes to sit down upon the grass, he took the five loaves and the two fishes, and looking up to heaven, he blessed, and brake, and gave the loaves to his disciples, and the disciples to the multitudes.
Matthew 14:20And all ate and were filled, and they took up what was over and above of fragments twelve hand-baskets full.They all ate, and were filled. They took up twelve baskets full of that which remained left over from the broken pieces.And they did all eat, and were filled. And they took up what remained, twelve full baskets of fragments.
Matthew 14:21But those that had eaten were about five thousand men, besides women and children.Those who ate were about five thousand men, besides women and children.And the number of them that did eat, was five thousand men, besides women and children.
Matthew 14:22And immediately he compelled the disciples to go on board ship, and to go on before him to the other side, until he should have dismissed the crowds.Immediately Jesus made the disciples get into the boat, and to go ahead of him to the other side, while he sent the multitudes away.And forthwith Jesus obliged his disciples to go up into the boat, and to go before him over the water, till he dismissed the people.
Matthew 14:23And having dismissed the crowds, he went up into the mountain apart to pray. And when even was come, he was alone there,After he had sent the multitudes away, he went up into the mountain apart to pray. When evening had come, he was there alone.And having dismissed the multitude, he went into a mountain alone to pray. And when it was evening, he was there alone.
Matthew 14:24but the ship was already in the middle of the sea tossed by the waves, for the wind was contrary.But the boat was now in the midst of the sea, distressed by the waves, for the wind was contrary.But the boat in the midst of the sea was tossed with the waves: for the wind was contrary.
Matthew 14:25But in the fourth watch of the night he went off to them, walking on the sea.In the fourth watch of the night Jesus came to them, walking on the sea.And in the fourth watch of the night, he came to them walking upon the sea.
Matthew 14:26And the disciples, seeing him walking on the sea, were troubled, saying, It is an apparition. And they cried out through fear.When the disciples saw him walking on the sea, they were troubled, saying, "It is a ghost!" and they cried out for fear.And they seeing him walk upon the sea, were troubled, saying: It is an apparition. And they cried out for fear.
Matthew 14:27But Jesus immediately spoke to them, saying, Take courage; it is *I*: be not afraid.But immediately Jesus spoke to them, saying "Cheer up! I AM! Don't be afraid."And immediately Jesus spoke to them, saying: Be of good heart: it is I, fear ye not.
Matthew 14:28And Peter answering him said, Lord, if it be *thou*, command me to come to thee upon the waters.Peter answered him and said, "Lord, if it is you, command me to come to you on the waters."And Peter making answer, said: Lord, if it be thou, bid me come to thee upon the waters.
Matthew 14:29And he said, Come. And Peter, having descended from the ship, walked upon the waters to go to Jesus.He said, "Come!" Peter went down from the boat, and walked on the waters to come to Jesus.And he said: Come. And Peter going down out of the boat, walked upon the water to come to Jesus.
Matthew 14:30But seeing the wind strong he was afraid; and beginning to sink he cried out, saying, Lord, save me.But when he saw that the wind was strong, he was afraid, and beginning to sink, he cried out, saying, "Lord, save me!"But seeing the wind strong, he was afraid: and when he began to sink, he cried out, saying: Lord, save me.
Matthew 14:31And immediately Jesus stretched out his hand and caught hold of him, and says to him, O thou of little faith, why didst thou doubt?Immediately Jesus stretched forth his hand, and took hold of him, and said to him, "You of little faith, why did you doubt?"And immediately Jesus stretching forth his hand took hold of him, and said to him: O thou of little faith, why didst thou doubt?
Matthew 14:32And when they had gone up into the ship, the wind fell.When they got up into the boat, the wind ceased.And when they were come up into the boat, the wind ceased.
Matthew 14:33But those in the ship came and did homage to him, saying, Truly thou art God's Son.Those who were in the boat came and worshipped him, saying, "You are truly the Son of God!"And they that were in the boat came and adored him, saying: Indeed thou art the Son of God.
Matthew 14:34And having crossed over they came to the land of Gennesaret.When they had crossed over, they came to the land of Gennesaret.And having passed the water, they came into the country of Genesar.
Matthew 14:35And when the men of that place recognised him, they sent to that whole country around, and they brought to him all that were ill,When the men of that place recognized him, they sent into all that region round about, and brought to him all who were sick,And when the men of that place had knowledge of him, they sent into all that country, and brought to him all that were diseased.
Matthew 14:36and besought him that they might only touch the hem of his garment; and as many as touched were made thoroughly well.and they begged him that they might only touch the fringe of his garment. As many as touched it were made whole.And they besought him that they might touch but the hem of his garment. And as many as touched, were made whole.
