Luke 14:1And it came to pass, as he went into the house of one of the rulers, [who was] of the Pharisees, to eat bread on [the] sabbath, that *they* were watching him.It happened, when he went into the house of one of the rulers of the Pharisees on a Sabbath to eat bread, that they were watching him.And it came to pass, as he went into the house of one of the chief Pharisees to eat bread on the sabbath, that they watched him.
Luke 14:2And behold, there was a certain dropsical [man] before him.Behold, a certain man who had dropsy was in front of him.And behold, there was a certain man before him who had the dropsy.
Luke 14:3And Jesus answering spoke unto the doctors of the law and Pharisees, saying, Is it lawful to heal on the sabbath?Jesus, answering, spoke to the lawyers and Pharisees, saying, "Is it lawful to heal on the Sabbath?"And Jesus answering, spoke to the lawyers and Pharisees, saying, Is it lawful to heal on the sabbath?
Luke 14:4But they were silent. And taking him he healed him and let him go.But they were silent. He took him, and healed him, and let him go.And they held their peace. And he took him and healed him, and let him go;
Luke 14:5And answering he said to them, Of which of you shall an ass or ox fall into a well, that he does not straightway pull him up on the sabbath day?He answered them, "Which of you, if your son or an ox fell into a well, wouldn't immediately pull him out on a Sabbath day?"And answered them, saying, Which of you shall have an ass or an ox fallen into a pit, and will not forthwith pull him out on the sabbath?
Luke 14:6And they were not able to answer him to these things.They couldn't answer him regarding these things.And they could not answer him again to these things.
Luke 14:7And he spoke a parable to those that were invited, remarking how they chose out the first places, saying to them,He spoke a parable to those who were invited, when he noticed how they chose the best seats, and said to them,And he put forth a parable to those who were invited, when he marked how they chose out the chief rooms; saying to them,
Luke 14:8When thou art invited by any one to a wedding, do not lay thyself down in the first place at table, lest perhaps a more honourable than thou be invited by him,"When you are invited by anyone to a marriage feast, don't sit in the best seat, since perhaps a more honorable man than you might be invited by him,When thou art invited by any man to a wedding, sit not down in the highest room, lest a more honorable man than thou be invited by him;
Luke 14:9and he who invited thee and him come and say to thee, Give place to this [man], and then thou begin with shame to take the last place.and he who invited both of you would come and tell you, 'Make room for this man.' Then you would begin, with shame, to take the lowest place.And he that invited thee and him, shall come and say to thee, Give this man place; and thou begin with shame to take the lowest room.
Luke 14:10But when thou hast been invited, go and put thyself down in the last place, that when he who has invited thee comes, he may say to thee, Friend, go up higher: then shalt thou have honour before all that are lying at table with thee;But when you are invited, go and sit in the lowest place, so that when he who invited you comes, he may tell you, 'Friend, move up higher.' Then you will have glory in the presence of all who sit at the table with you.But when thou art invited, go and sit down in the lowest room; that when he that invited thee cometh, he may say to thee, Friend, go up higher: then shalt thou have honor in the presence of them that sit at table with thee.
Luke 14:11for every one that exalts himself shall be abased, and he that abases himself shall be exalted.For everyone who exalts himself will be humbled, and whoever humbles himself will be exalted."For whoever exalteth himself shall be abased, and he that humbleth himself shall be exalted.
Luke 14:12And he said also to him that had invited him, When thou makest a dinner or a supper, call not thy friends, nor thy brethren, nor thy kinsfolk, nor rich neighbours, lest it may be they also should invite thee in return, and a recompense be made thee.He also said to the one who had invited him, "When you make a dinner or a supper, don't call your friends, nor your brothers, nor your kinsmen, nor rich neighbors, or perhaps they might also return the favor, and pay you back.Then said he also to him that invited him, When thou makest a dinner or a supper, call not thy friends, nor thy brethren, neither thy kinsmen, nor thy rich neighbors; lest they also invite thee again, and a recompense be made thee.
Luke 14:13But when thou makest a feast, call poor, crippled, lame, blind:But when you make a feast, ask the poor, the maimed, the lame, or the blind;But when thou makest a feast, call the poor, the maimed, the lame, the blind:
Luke 14:14and thou shalt be blessed; for they have not [the means] to recompense thee; for it shall be recompensed thee in the resurrection of the just.and you will be blessed, because they don't have the resources to repay you. For you will be repaid in the resurrection of the righteous."And thou shalt be blessed: for they cannot recompense thee: for thou shalt be recompensed at the resurrection of the just.
Luke 14:15And one of those that were lying at table with [them], hearing these things, said to him, Blessed [is] he who shall eat bread in the kingdom of God.When one of those who sat at the table with him heard these things, he said to him, "Blessed is he who will feast in the kingdom of God!"And when one of them that sat at table with him heard these things, he said to him, Blessed is he that shall eat bread in the kingdom of God.
Luke 14:16And he said to him, A certain man made a great supper and invited many.But he said to him, "A certain man made a great supper, and he invited many people.Then said he to him, A certain man made a great supper, and invited many:
Luke 14:17And he sent his bondman at the hour of supper to say to those who were invited, Come, for already all things are ready.He sent out his servant at supper time to tell those who were invited, 'Come, for everything is ready now.'And sent his servant at supper-time, to say to them that were invited, Come, for all things are now ready.
Luke 14:18And all began, without exception, to excuse themselves. The first said to him, I have bought land, and I must go out and see it; I pray thee hold me for excused.They all as one began to make excuses. The first said to him, 'I have bought a field, and I must go and see it. Please have me excused.'And they all with one consent began to make excuse. The first said to him, I have bought a piece of ground, and I must needs go and see it: I pray thee have me excused.
Luke 14:19And another said, I have bought five yoke of oxen, and I go to prove them; I pray thee hold me for excused.Another said, 'I have bought five yoke of oxen, and I must go try them out. Please have me excused.'And another said, I have bought five yoke of oxen, and I go to prove them: I pray thee have me excused.
Luke 14:20And another said, I have married a wife, and on this account I cannot come.Another said, 'I have married a wife, and therefore I can't come.'And another said, I have married a wife: and therefore I cannot come.
Luke 14:21And the bondman came up and brought back word of these things to his lord. Then the master of the house, in anger, said to his bondman, Go out quickly into the streets and lanes of the city, and bring here the poor and crippled and lame and blind.That servant came, and told his lord these things. Then the master of the house, being angry, said to his servant, 'Go out quickly into the streets and lanes of the city, and bring in here the poor, maimed, blind, and lame.'So that servant came, and showed his lord these things. Then the master of the house being angry, said to his servant, Go out quickly into the streets and lanes of the city, and bring in hither the poor, and the maimed, and the halt, and the blind.
Luke 14:22And the bondman said, Sir, it is done as thou hast commanded, and there is still room.The servant said, 'Lord, it is done as you commanded, and there is still room.'And the servant said, Lord, it is done as thou hast commanded, and yet there is room.
Luke 14:23And the lord said to the bondman, Go out into the ways and fences and compel to come in, that my house may be filled;The lord said to the servant, 'Go out into the highways and hedges, and compel them to come in, that my house may be filled.And the lord said to the servant, Go out into the highways and hedges, and compel them to come in, that my house may be filled.
Luke 14:24for I say to you, that not one of those men who were invited shall taste of my supper.For I tell you that none of those men who were invited will taste of my supper.'"For I say to you, that none of those men who were invited, shall taste my supper.
Luke 14:25And great crowds went with him; and, turning round, he said to them,Now great multitudes went with him. He turned and said to them,And there went great multitudes with him: and he turned, and said to them,
Luke 14:26If any man come to me, and shall not hate his own father and mother, and wife, and children, and brothers, and sisters, yea, and his own life too, he cannot be my disciple;"If any man comes to me, and doesn't hate his own father, mother, wife, children, brothers, and sisters, yes, and his own life also, he can't be my disciple.If any man cometh to me, and hateth not his father, and mother, and wife, and children, and brethren, and sisters, yes, and his own life also, he cannot be my disciple.
Luke 14:27and whoever does not carry his cross and come after me cannot be my disciple.Whoever doesn't bear his own cross, and come after me, can't be my disciple.And whoever doth not bear his cross, and come after me, cannot be my disciple.
Luke 14:28For which of you, desirous of building a tower, does not first sit down and count the cost, if he have what [is needed] to complete it;For which of you, desiring to build a tower, doesn't first sit down and count the cost, to see if he has enough to complete it?For which of you intending to build a tower, sitteth not down first, and counteth the cost, whether he hath sufficient to finish it?
Luke 14:29in order that, having laid the foundation of it, and not being able to finish it, all who see it do not begin to mock at him,Or perhaps, when he has laid a foundation, and is not able to finish, everyone who sees begins to mock him,Lest perhaps after he hath laid the foundation, and is not able to finish it, all that behold it begin to mock him,
Luke 14:30saying, This man began to build and was not able to finish?saying, 'This man began to build, and wasn't able to finish.'Saying, This man began to build, and was not able to finish.
Luke 14:31Or what king, going on his way to engage in war with another king, does not, sitting down first, take counsel whether he is able with ten thousand to meet him coming against him with twenty thousand?Or what king, as he goes to encounter another king in war, will not sit down first and consider whether he is able with ten thousand to meet him who comes against him with twenty thousand?Or what king going to make war against another king, sitteth not down first, and consulteth whether he is able with ten thousand to meet him that cometh against him with twenty thousand?
Luke 14:32and if not, while he is yet far off, having sent an embassy, he asks for terms of peace.Or else, while the other is yet a great way off, he sends an envoy, and asks for conditions of peace.Or else, while the other is yet a great way off, he sendeth an embassy, and desireth conditions of peace.
Luke 14:33Thus then every one of you who forsakes not all that is his own cannot be my disciple.So therefore whoever of you who doesn't renounce all that he has, he can't be my disciple.So likewise, whoever he is of you that forsaketh not all that he hath, he cannot be my disciple.
Luke 14:34Salt [then] [is] good, but if the salt also has become savourless, wherewith shall it be seasoned?Salt is good, but if the salt becomes flat and tasteless, with what do you season it?Salt is good: but if the salt hath lost its savor, with what shall it be seasoned?
Luke 14:35It is proper neither for land nor for dung; it is cast out. He that hath ears to hear, let him hear.It is fit neither for the soil nor for the manure pile. It is thrown out. He who has ears to hear, let him hear."It is neither fit for the land, nor yet for the dunghill, but men cast it out. He that hath ears to hear, let him hear.
