Acts 17:4And some of them believed, and joined themselves to Paul and Silas, and of the Greeks who worshipped, a great multitude, and of the chief women not a few.And certain of them did believe, and attached themselves to Paul and to Silas, also of the worshipping Greeks a great multitude, of the principal women also not a few.And some of them were persuaded, and consorted with Paul and Silas, and of the devout Greeks a great multitude, and of the chief women not a few.
Acts 17:5But the Jews having been stirred up to jealousy, and taken to [themselves] certain wicked men of the lowest rabble, and having got a crowd together, set the city in confusion; and having beset the house of Jason sought to bring them out to the people;And the unbelieving Jews, having been moved with envy, and having taken to them of the loungers certain evil men, and having made a crowd, were setting the city in an uproar; having assailed also the house of Jason, they were seeking them to bring [them] to the populace,But the Jews, being moved with jealousy, took unto them certain vile fellows of the rabble, and gathering a crowd, set the city on an uproar; and assaulting the house of Jason, they sought to bring them forth to the people.
Acts 17:6and not having found them, dragged Jason and certain brethren before the politarchs, crying out, These [men] that have set the world in tumult, are come here also,and not having found them, they drew Jason and certain brethren unto the city rulers, calling aloud `These, having put the world in commotion, are also here present,And when they found them not, they dragged Jason and certain brethren before the rulers of the city, crying, These that have turned the world upside down are come hither also;
Acts 17:7whom Jason has received; and these all do contrary to the decrees of Caesar, saying, that there is another king, Jesus.whom Jason hath received; and these all do contrary to the decrees of Caesar, saying another to be king Jesus.`whom Jason hath received: and these all act contrary to the decrees of Caesar, saying that there is another king, [one] Jesus.
Acts 17:8And they troubled the crowd and the politarchs when they heard these things.And they troubled the multitude and the city rulers, hearing these things,And they troubled the multitude and the rulers of the city, when they heard these things.
Acts 17:9And having taken security of Jason and the rest, they let them go.and having taking security from Jason and the rest, they let them go.And when they had taken security from Jason and the rest, they let them go.
Acts 17:10But the brethren immediately sent away, in the night, Paul and Silas to Berea; who, being arrived, went away into the synagogue of the Jews.And the brethren immediately, through the night, sent forth both Paul and Silas to Berea, who having come, went to the synagogue of the Jews;And the brethren immediately sent away Paul and Silas by night unto Beroea: who when they were come thither went into the synagogue of the Jews.
Acts 17:11And these were more noble than those in Thessalonica, receiving the word with all readiness of mind, daily searching the scriptures if these things were so.and these were more noble than those in Thessalonica, they received the word with all readiness of mind, every day examining the Writings whether those things were so;Now these were more noble than those in Thessalonica, in that they received the word with all readiness of the mind, examining the Scriptures daily, whether these things were so.
Acts 17:12Therefore many from among them believed, and of Grecian women of the upper classes and men not a few.many, indeed, therefore, of them did believe, and of the honourable Greek women and men not a few.Many of them therefore believed; also of the Greek women of honorable estate, and of men, not a few.
Acts 17:13But when the Jews from Thessalonica knew that the word of God was announced in Berea also by Paul, they came there also, stirring up the crowds.And when the Jews from Thessalonica knew that also in Berea was the word of God declared by Paul, they came thither also, agitating the multitudes;But when the Jews of Thessalonica had knowledge that the word of God was proclaimed of Paul at Beroea also, they came thither likewise, stirring up and troubling the multitudes.
Acts 17:14And then immediately the brethren sent away Paul to go as to the sea; but Silas and Timotheus abode there.and then immediately the brethren sent forth Paul, to go on as it were to the sea, but both Silas and Timothy were remaining there.And then immediately the brethren sent forth Paul to go as far as to the sea: and Silas and Timothy abode there still.
Acts 17:15But they that conducted Paul brought him as far as Athens; and, having received a commandment to Silas and Timotheus, that they should come to him as quickly as possible, they departed.And those conducting Paul, brought him unto Athens, and having received a command unto Silas and Timotheus that with all speed they may come unto him, they departed;But they that conducted Paul brought him as far as Athens: and receiving a commandment unto Silas and Timothy that they should come to him with all speed, they departed.
Acts 17:16But in Athens, while Paul was waiting for them, his spirit was painfully excited in him seeing the city given up to idolatry.and Paul waiting for them in Athens, his spirit was stirred in him, beholding the city wholly given to idolatry,Now while Paul waited for them at Athens, his spirit was provoked within him as he beheld the city full of idols.
Acts 17:17He reasoned therefore in the synagogue with the Jews, and those who worshipped, and in the market-place every day with those he met with.therefore, indeed, he was reasoning in the synagogue with the Jews, and with the worshipping persons, and in the market-place every day with those who met with him.So he reasoned in the synagogue with Jews and the devout persons, and in the marketplace every day with them that met him.
Acts 17:18But some also of the Epicurean and Stoic philosophers attacked him. And some said, What would this chatterer say? and some, He seems to be an announcer of foreign demons, because he announced the glad tidings of Jesus and the resurrection [to them].And certain of the Epicurean and of the Stoic philosophers, were meeting together to see him, and some were saying, `What would this seed picker wish to say?` and others, `Of strange demons he doth seem to be an announcer;` because Jesus and the rising again he did proclaim to them as good news,And certain also of the Epicurean and Stoic philosophers encountered him. And some said, What would this babbler say? others, He seemeth to be a setter forth of strange gods: because he preached Jesus and the resurrection.
Acts 17:19And having taken hold on him they brought [him] to Areopagus, saying, Might we know what this new doctrine which is spoken by thee [is]?having also taken him, unto the Areopagus they brought [him], saying, `Are we able to know what [is] this new teaching that is spoken by thee,And they took hold of him, and brought him unto the Areopagus, saying, May we know what this new teaching is, which is spoken by thee?
Acts 17:20For thou bringest certain strange things to our ears. We wish therefore to know what these things may mean.for certain strange things thou dost bring to our ears? we wish, then, to know what these things would wish to be;`For thou bringest certain strange things to our ears: we would know therefore what these things mean.
Acts 17:21Now all [the] Athenians and the strangers sojourning there spent their time in nothing else than to tell and to hear the news.and all Athenians, and the strangers sojourning, for nothing else were at leisure but to say something, and to hear some newer thing.(Now all the Athenians and the strangers sojourning there spent their time in nothing else, but either to tell or to hear some new thing.)
Acts 17:22And Paul standing in the midst of Areopagus said, Athenians, in every way I see you given up to demon worship;And Paul, having stood in the midst of the Areopagus, said, `Men, Athenians, in all things I perceive you as over-religious;And Paul stood in the midst of the Areopagus, and said, Ye men of Athens, in all things, I perceive that ye are very religious.
Acts 17:23for, passing through and beholding your shrines, I found also an altar on which was inscribed, To the unknown God. Whom therefore ye reverence, not knowing [him], him I announce to you.for passing through and contemplating your objects of worship, I found also an erection on which had been inscribed: To God unknown; whom, therefore not knowing ye do worship, this One I announce to you.For as I passed along, and observed the objects of your worship, I found also an altar with this inscription, TO AN UNKNOWN GOD. What therefore ye worship in ignorance, this I set forth unto you.
Acts 17:24The God who has made the world and all things which are in it, *he*, being Lord of heaven and earth, does not dwell in temples made with hands,`God, who did make the world, and all things in it, this One, of heaven and of earth being Lord, in temples made with hands doth not dwell,The God that made the world and all things therein, he, being Lord of heaven and earth, dwelleth not in temples made with hands;
Acts 17:25nor is served by men's hands as needing something, himself giving to all life and breath and all things;neither by the hands of men is He served needing anything, He giving to all life, and breath, and all things;neither is he served by men's hands, as though he needed anything, seeing he himself giveth to all life, and breath, and all things;
Acts 17:26and has made of one blood every nation of men to dwell upon the whole face of the earth, having determined ordained times and the boundaries of their dwelling,He made also of one blood every nation of men, to dwell upon all the face of the earth having ordained times before appointed, and the bounds of their dwellingsand he made of one every nation of men to dwell on all the face of the earth, having determined [their] appointed seasons, and the bounds of their habitation;
Acts 17:27that they may seek God; if indeed they might feel after him and find him, although he is not far from each one of us:to seek the Lord, if perhaps they did feel after Him and find, though, indeed, He is not far from each one of us,that they should seek God, if haply they might feel after him and find him, though he is not far from each one of us:
Acts 17:28for in him we live and move and exist; as also some of the poets amongst you have said, For we are also his offspring.for in Him we live, and move, and are; as also certain of your poets have said: For of Him also we are offspring.for in him we live, and move, and have our being; as certain even of your own poets have said, For we are also his offspring.
Acts 17:29Being therefore [the] offspring of God, we ought not to think that which is divine to be like gold or silver or stone, [the] graven form of man's art and imagination.`Being, therefore, offspring of God, we ought not to think the Godhead to be like to gold, or silver, or stone, graving of art and device of man;Being then the offspring of God, we ought not to think that the Godhead is like unto gold, or silver, or stone, graven by art and device of man.
Acts 17:30God therefore, having overlooked the times of ignorance, now enjoins men that they shall all everywhere repent,the times, indeed, therefore, of the ignorance God having overlooked, doth now command all men everywhere to reform,The times of ignorance therefore God overlooked; but now he commandeth men that they should all everywhere repent:
Acts 17:31because he has set a day in which he is going to judge the habitable earth in righteousness by [the] man whom he has appointed, giving the proof [of it] to all [in] having raised him from among [the] dead.because He did set a day in which He is about to judge the world in righteousness, by a man whom He did ordain, having given assurance to all, having raised him out of the dead.`inasmuch as he hath appointed a day in which he will judge the world in righteousness by the man whom he hath ordained; whereof he hath given assurance unto all men, in that he hath raised him from the dead.
Acts 17:32And when they heard [of the] resurrection of the dead, some mocked, and some said, We will hear thee again also concerning this.And having heard of a rising again of the dead, some, indeed, were mocking, but others said, `We will hear thee again concerning this;`Now when they heard of the resurrection of the dead, some mocked; but others said, We will hear thee concerning this yet again.
Acts 17:33Thus Paul went out of their midst.and so Paul went forth from the midst of them,Thus Paul went out from among them.
Acts 17:34But some men joining themselves to him believed; among whom also was Dionysius the Areopagite, and a woman by name Damaris, and others with them.and certain men having cleaved to him, did believe, among whom [is] also Dionysius the Areopagite, and a woman, by name Damaris, and others with them.But certain men clave unto him, and believed: among whom also was Dionysius the Areopagite, and a woman named Damaris, and others with them.
