Matthew 26:1 | And it came to pass when Jesus had finished all these sayings, he said to his disciples, | And it came to pass, when Jesus finished all these words, he said to his disciples, | And when Jesus had come to the end of all these words, he said to his disciples, |
Matthew 26:2 | Ye know that after two days the passover takes place, and the Son of man is delivered up to be crucified. | `Ye have known that after two days the passover cometh, and the Son of Man is delivered up to be crucified.` | After two days is the Passover, and the Son of man will be given up to the death of the cross. |
Matthew 26:3 | Then the chief priests and the elders of the people were gathered together to the palace of the high priest who was called Caiaphas, | Then were gathered together the chief priests, and the scribes, and the elders of the people, to the court of the chief priest who was called Caiaphas; | Then the chief priests and the rulers of the people came together in the house of the high priest, who was named Caiaphas. |
Matthew 26:4 | and took counsel together in order that they might seize Jesus by subtlety and kill him; | and they consulted together that they might take Jesus by guile, and kill [him], | And they made designs together to take Jesus by some trick, and put him to death. |

Matthew 26:7 | a woman, having an alabaster flask of very precious ointment, came to him and poured it out upon his head as he lay at table. | there came to him a woman having an alabaster box of ointment, very precious, and she poured on his head as he is reclining (at meat). | There came to him a woman having a bottle of perfume of great price, and she put the perfume on his head when he was seated at table. |
Matthew 26:8 | But the disciples seeing it became indignant, saying, To what end [was] this waste? | And having seen [it], his disciples were much displeased, saying, `To what purpose [is] this waste? | But when the disciples saw it they were angry, saying, To what purpose is this waste? |
Matthew 26:9 | for this might have been sold for much and been given to the poor. | for this ointment could have been sold for much, and given to the poor.` | For we might have got much money for this and given it to the poor. |
Matthew 26:10 | But Jesus knowing [it] said to them, Why do ye trouble the woman? for she has wrought a good work toward me. | And Jesus having known, said to them, `Why do ye give trouble to the woman? for a good work she wrought for me; | But Jesus, seeing it, said to them, Why are you troubling the woman? she has done a kind act to me. |
Matthew 26:11 | For ye have the poor always with you, but me ye have not always. | for the poor always ye have with you, and me ye have not always; | For the poor you have ever with you, but me you have not for ever. |
Matthew 26:12 | For in pouring out this ointment on my body, she has done it for my burying. | for she having put this ointment on my body for my burial she did [it]. | For in putting this perfume on my body, she did it to make me ready for my last resting-place. |
Matthew 26:13 | Verily I say to you, Wheresoever these glad tidings may be preached in the whole world, that also which this [woman] has done shall be spoken of for a memorial of her. | Verily I say to you, Wherever this good news may be proclaimed in the whole world, what this [one] did shall also be spoken of for a memorial of her.` | Truly I say to you, Wherever this good news goes out in all the world, what this woman has done will be talked of in memory of her. |
Matthew 26:14 | Then one of the twelve, he who was called Judas Iscariote, went to the chief priests | Then one of the twelve, who is called Judas Iscariot, having gone unto the chief priests, said, | Then one of the twelve, who was named Judas Iscariot, went to the chief priests and said, |
Matthew 26:15 | and said, What are ye willing to give me, and *I* will deliver him up to you? And they appointed to him thirty pieces of silver. | `What are ye willing to give me, and I will deliver him up to you?` and they weighed out to him thirty silverlings, | What will you give me, if I give him up to you? And the price was fixed at thirty bits of silver. |
Matthew 26:16 | And from that time he sought a good opportunity that he might deliver him up. | and from that time he was seeking a convenient season to deliver him up. | And from that time he was watching for a chance to give him into their hands. |
Matthew 26:17 | Now on the first [day] of [the feast of] unleavened bread, the disciples came to Jesus, saying, Where wilt thou that we prepare for thee to eat the passover? | And on the first [day] of the unleavened food came the disciples near to Jesus, saying to him, `Where wilt thou [that] we may prepare for thee to eat the passover?` | Now on the first day of unleavened bread the disciples came to Jesus, saying, Where are we to make ready for you to take the Passover meal? |
Matthew 26:18 | And he said, Go into the city unto such a one, and say to him, The Teacher says, My time is near, I will keep the passover in thy house with my disciples. | and he said, `Go away to the city, unto such a one, and say to him, The Teacher saith, My time is nigh; near thee I keep the passover, with my disciples;` | And he said to them, Go into the town to such a man, and say to him, The Master says, My time is near: I will keep the Passover at your house with my disciples. |
Matthew 26:19 | And the disciples did as Jesus had directed them, and they prepared the passover. | and the disciples did as Jesus appointed them, and prepared the passover. | And the disciples did as Jesus had said to them; and they made ready the Passover. |
Matthew 26:20 | And when the evening was come he lay down at table with the twelve. | And evening having come, he was reclining (at meat) with the twelve, | Now when evening was come, he was seated at table with the twelve disciples; |
Matthew 26:21 | And as they were eating he said, Verily I say to you, that one of you shall deliver me up. | and while they are eating, he said, `Verily I say to you, that one of you shall deliver me up.` | And while they were taking food, he said, Truly I say to you that one of you will be false to me. |
Matthew 26:22 | And being exceedingly grieved they began to say to him, each of them, Is it *I*, Lord? | And being grieved exceedingly, they began to say to him, each of them, `Is it I, Sir?` | And they were very said, and said to him, one by one, Is it I, Lord? |
Matthew 26:23 | But he answering said, He that dips his hand with me in the dish, *he* it is who shall deliver me up. | And he answering said, `He who did dip with me the hand in the dish, he will deliver me up; | And he made answer and said, He who puts his hand into the plate with me, the same will be false to me. |
Matthew 26:24 | The Son of man goes indeed, according as it is written concerning him, but woe to that man by whom the Son of man is delivered up; it were good for that man if he had not been born. | the Son of Man doth indeed go, as it hath been written concerning him, but wo to that man through whom the Son of Man is delivered up! good it were for him if that man had not been born.` | The Son of man goes, even as the Writings say of him: but a curse is on that man through whom the Son of man is given up; it would have been well for that man if he had never come into the world. |
Matthew 26:25 | And Judas, who delivered him up, answering said, Is it *I*, Rabbi? He says to him, *Thou* hast said. | And Judas he who delivered him up answering said, `Is it I, Rabbi?` He saith to him, `Thou hast said.` | And Judas, who was false to him, made answer and said, Is it I, Master? He says to him, Yes. |
Matthew 26:26 | And as they were eating, Jesus, having taken [the] bread and blessed, broke [it] and gave [it] to the disciples, and said, Take, eat: this is my body. | And while they were eating, Jesus having taken the bread, and having blessed, did brake, and was giving to the disciples, and said, `Take, eat, this is my body;` | And when they were taking food, Jesus took bread and, after blessing it, he gave the broken bread to the disciples and said, Take it; this is my body. |
Matthew 26:27 | And having taken [the] cup and given thanks, he gave [it] to them, saying, Drink ye all of it. | and having taken the cup, and having given thanks, he gave to them, saying, `Drink ye of it all; | And he took a cup and, having given praise, he gave it to them, saying, |
Matthew 26:28 | For this is my blood, that of the [new] covenant, that shed for many for remission of sins. | for this is my blood of the new covenant, that for many is being poured out to remission of sins; | Take of it, all of you, for this is my blood of the testament, which is given for men for the forgiveness of sins. |
Matthew 26:29 | But I say to you, that I will not at all drink henceforth of this fruit of the vine, until that day when I drink it new with you in the kingdom of my Father. | and I say to you, that I may not drink henceforth on this produce of the vine, till that day when I may drink it with you new in the reign of my Father.` | But I say to you that from now I will not take of this fruit of the vine, till that day when I take it new with you in my Father's kingdom. |
Matthew 26:30 | And having sung a hymn, they went out to the mount of Olives. | And having sung a hymn, they went forth to the mount of the Olives; | And after a song of praise to God, they went out to the Mountain of Olives. |
Matthew 26:31 | Then saith Jesus to them, All *ye* shall be offended in me during this night. For it is written, I will smite the shepherd, and the sheep of the flock shall be scattered abroad. | then saith Jesus to them, `All ye shall be stumbled at me this night; for it hath been written, I will smite the shepherd, and the sheep of the flock shall be scattered abroad; | Then said Jesus to them, All of you will be turned away from me this night: for it is said in the Writings, I will put to death the keeper of the sheep, and the sheep of the flock will be put to flight. |
Matthew 26:32 | But after that I shall be risen, I will go before you to Galilee. | but, after my having risen, I will go before you to Galilee.` | But after I am come back from the dead, I will go before you into Galilee. |
Matthew 26:33 | And Peter answering said to him, If all shall be offended in thee, *I* will never be offended. | And Peter answering said to him, `Even if all shall be stumbled at thee, I will never be stumbled.` | But Peter made answer and said to him, Though all may be turned away from you, I will never be turned away. |
Matthew 26:34 | Jesus said to him, Verily I say to thee, that during this night, before [the] cock shall crow, thou shalt deny me thrice. | Jesus said to him, `Verily I say to thee, that, this night, before cock-crowing, thrice thou wilt deny me.` | Jesus said to him, Truly I say to you that this night, before the hour of the cock's cry, you will say three times that you have no knowledge of me. |
Matthew 26:35 | Peter says to him, If I should needs die with thee, I will in no wise deny thee. Likewise said all the disciples also. | Peter saith to him, `Even if it may be necessary for me to die with thee, I will not deny thee;` in like manner also said all the disciples. | Peter says to him, Even if I am put to death with you, I will not be false to you. So said all the disciples. |
Matthew 26:36 | Then Jesus comes with them to a place called Gethsemane, and says to the disciples, Sit here until I go away and pray yonder. | Then come with them doth Jesus to a place called Gethsemane, and he saith to the disciples, `Sit ye here, till having gone away, I shall pray yonder.` | Then comes Jesus with them to a place named Gethsemane, and says to his disciples, Be seated here, while I go over there for prayer. |
Matthew 26:37 | And taking with [him] Peter and the two sons of Zebedee, he began to be sorrowful and deeply depressed. | And having taken Peter, and the two sons of Zebedee, he began to be sorrowful, and to be very heavy; | And he took with him Peter and the two sons of Zebedee, and became sad and very troubled. |
Matthew 26:38 | Then he says to them, My soul is very sorrowful even unto death; remain here and watch with me. | then saith he to them, `Exceedingly sorrowful is my soul unto death; abide ye here, and watch with me.` | Then says he to them, My soul is very sad, even to death: keep watch with me here. |
Matthew 26:39 | And going forward a little he fell upon his face, praying and saying, My Father, if it be possible let this cup pass from me; but not as *I* will, but as *thou* [wilt]. | And having gone forward a little, he fell on his face, praying, and saying, `My Father, if it be possible, let this cup pass from me; nevertheless, not as I will, but as Thou.` | And he went forward a little, and falling down on his face in prayer, he said, O my Father, if it is possible, let this cup go from me; but let not my pleasure, but yours be done. |
Matthew 26:40 | And he comes to the disciples and finds them sleeping, and says to Peter, Thus ye have not been able to watch one hour with me? | And he cometh unto the disciples, and findeth them sleeping, and he saith to Peter, `So! ye were not able one hour to watch with me! | And he comes to the disciples, and sees that they are sleeping, and says to Peter, What, were you not able to keep watch with me one hour? |
Matthew 26:41 | Watch and pray, that ye enter not into temptation: the spirit indeed [is] ready, but the flesh weak. | watch, and pray, that ye may not enter into temptation: the spirit indeed is forward, but the flesh weak.` | Keep watch with prayer, so that you may not be put to the test: the spirit truly is ready, but the flesh is feeble. |
Matthew 26:42 | Again going away a second time he prayed saying, My Father, if this cannot pass [from me] unless I drink it, thy will be done. | Again, a second time, having gone away, he prayed, saying, `My Father, if this cup cannot pass away from me except I drink it, Thy will be done;` | Again, a second time he went away, and said in prayer, O my Father, if this may not go from me without my taking it, let your pleasure be done. |
Matthew 26:43 | And coming he found them again sleeping, for their eyes were heavy. | and having come, he findeth them again sleeping, for their eyes were heavy. | And he came again and saw them sleeping, for their eyes were tired. |
Matthew 26:44 | And leaving them, he went away again and prayed the third time, saying the same thing. | And having left them, having gone away again, he prayed a third time, saying the same word; | And he went away from them again, and a third time said the same prayer. |
Matthew 26:45 | Then he comes to the disciples and says to them, Sleep on now and take your rest; behold, the hour has drawn nigh, and the Son of man is delivered up into the hands of sinners. | then cometh he unto his disciples, and saith to them, `Sleep on henceforth, and rest! lo, the hour hath come nigh, and the Son of Man is delivered up to the hands of sinners. | Then he comes to the disciples; and says to them, Go on sleeping now, and take your rest: for the hour is come, and the Son of man is given into the hands of evil men. |
Matthew 26:46 | Arise, let us go; behold, he that delivers me up has drawn nigh. | Rise, let us go; lo, he hath come nigh who is delivering me up.` | Up, let us be going: see, he who gives me up is near. |
Matthew 26:47 | And while he was yet speaking, behold, Judas, one of the twelve, came, and with him a great crowd with swords and sticks from the chief priests and elders of the people. | And while he is yet speaking, lo, Judas, one of the twelve did come, and with him a great multitude, with swords and sticks, from the chief priests and elders of the people. | And while he was still talking, Judas, one of the twelve, came, and with him a band armed with swords and sticks, from the chief priests and those in authority over the people. |
Matthew 26:48 | Now he that delivered him up had given them a sign, saying, Whomsoever I shall kiss, he it is: seize him. | And he who did deliver him up did give them a sign, saying, `Whomsoever I will kiss, it is he: lay hold on him;` | Now the false one had given them a sign saying, The one to whom I give a kiss, that is he: take him. |
Matthew 26:49 | And immediately coming up to Jesus he said, Hail, Rabbi, and covered him with kisses. | and immediately, having come to Jesus, he said, `Hail, Rabbi,` and kissed him; | And straight away he came to Jesus and said, Master! and gave him a kiss. |
Matthew 26:50 | But Jesus said to him, [My] friend, for what purpose art thou come? Then coming up they laid hands upon Jesus and seized him. | and Jesus said to him, `Comrade, for what art thou present?` Then having come near, they laid hands on Jesus, and took hold on him. | And Jesus said to him, Friend, do that for which you have come. Then they came and put hands on Jesus, and took him. |
Matthew 26:51 | And behold, one of those with Jesus stretched out his hand and drew his sword, and smiting the bondman of the high priest took off his ear. | And lo, one of those with Jesus, having stretched forth the hand, drew his sword, and having struck the servant of the chief priest, he took off his ear. | And one of those who were with Jesus put out his hand, and took out his sword and gave the servant of the high priest a blow, cutting off his ear. |
Matthew 26:52 | Then saith Jesus to him, Return thy sword to its place; for all who take the sword shall perish by the sword. | Then saith Jesus to him, `Turn back thy sword to its place; for all who did take the sword, by the sword shall perish; | Then says Jesus to him, Put up your sword again into its place: for all those who take the sword will come to death by the sword. |
Matthew 26:53 | Or thinkest thou that I cannot now call upon my Father, and he will furnish me more than twelve legions of angels? | dost thou think that I am not able now to call upon my Father, and He will place beside me more than twelve legions of messengers? | Does it not seem possible to you that if I make request to my Father he will even now send me an army of angels? |
Matthew 26:54 | How then should the scriptures be fulfilled that thus it must be? | how then may the Writings be fulfilled, that thus it behoveth to happen?` | But how then would the Writings come true, which say that so it has to be? |
Matthew 26:55 | In that hour Jesus said to the crowds, Are ye come out as against a robber with swords and sticks to take me? I sat daily [with you] teaching in the temple, and ye did not seize me. | In that hour said Jesus to the multitudes, `As against a robber ye did come forth, with swords and sticks, to take me! daily with you I was sitting teaching in the temple, and ye did not lay hold on me; | In that hour Jesus said to the people, Have you come out as against a thief with swords and sticks to take me? I was teaching every day in the Temple and you took me not. |
Matthew 26:56 | But all this is come to pass that the scriptures of the prophets may be fulfilled. Then all the disciples left him and fled. | but all this hath come to pass, that the Writings of the prophets may be fulfilled;` then all the disciples, having left him, fled. | But all this has taken place so that the writings of the prophets might come true. Then all his disciples went from him in flight. |
Matthew 26:57 | Now they that had seized Jesus led [him] away to Caiaphas the high priest, where the scribes and the elders were assembled. | And those laying hold on Jesus led [him] away unto Caiaphas the chief priest, where the scribes and the elders were gathered together, | And those who had made Jesus prisoner took him away to the house of Caiaphas, the high priest, where the scribes and those in authority over the people had come together. |

Matthew 26:60 | And they found none, though many false witnesses came forward. But at the last two false witnesses came forward | and they did not find; and many false witnesses having come near, they did not find; and at last two false witnesses having come near, | And they were not able to get it, though a number of false witnesses came. |
Matthew 26:61 | and said, *He* said, I am able to destroy the temple of God, and in three days build it. | said, `This one said, I am able to throw down the sanctuary of God, and after three days to build it.` | But later there came two who said, This man said, I am able to give the Temple of God to destruction, and to put it up again in three days. |
Matthew 26:62 | And the high priest standing up said to him, Answerest thou nothing? What do these witness against thee? | And the chief priest having stood up, said to him, `Nothing thou dost answer! what do these witness against thee? | And the high priest got up and said to him, Have you no answer? what is it which these say against you? |
Matthew 26:63 | But Jesus was silent. And the high priest answering said to him, I adjure thee by the living God that thou tell us if *thou* art the Christ the Son of God. | and Jesus was silent. And the chief priest answering said to him, `I adjure thee, by the living God, that thou mayest say to us, if thou art the Christ the Son of God.` | But Jesus said not a word. And the high priest said to him, I put you on oath, by the living God, that you will say to us if you are the Christ, the Son of God. |
Matthew 26:64 | Jesus says to him, *Thou* hast said. Moreover, I say to you, From henceforth ye shall see the Son of man sitting at the right hand of power, and coming on the clouds of heaven. | Jesus saith to him, `Thou hast said; nevertheless I say to you, hereafter ye shall see the Son of Man sitting on the right hand of the power, and coming upon the clouds, of the heaven.` | Jesus says to him, You say so: but I say to you, From now you will see the Son of man seated at the right hand of power, and coming on the clouds of heaven. |
Matthew 26:65 | Then the high priest rent his clothes, saying, He has blasphemed: what need have we any more of witnesses? behold, now ye have heard the blasphemy. | Then the chief priest rent his garments, saying, `He hath spoken evil; what need have we yet of witnesses? lo, now ye heard his evil speaking; | Then the high priest, violently parting his robes, said, He has said evil against God: what more need have we of witnesses? for now his words against God have come to your ears: |
Matthew 26:66 | What think ye? And they answering said, He is liable to the penalty of death. | what think ye?` and they answering said, `He is worthy of death.` | What is your opinion? They made answer and said, It is right for him to be put to death. |
Matthew 26:67 | Then they spit in his face, and buffeted him, and some struck him with the palms of their hand, | Then did they spit in his face and buffet him, and others did slap, | Then they put shame on him, and were cruel to him: and some gave him blows, saying, |
Matthew 26:68 | saying, Prophesy to us, Christ, Who is it who struck thee? | saying, `Declare to us, O Christ, who he is that struck thee?` | Be a prophet, O Christ, and say who gave you a blow! |
Matthew 26:69 | But Peter sat without in the palace-court; and a maid came to him, saying, And *thou* wast with Jesus the Galilaean. | And Peter without was sitting in the court, and there came near to him a certain maid, saying, `And thou wast with Jesus of Galilee!` | Now Peter was seated in the open square outside the house: and a servant-girl came to him, saying, You were with Jesus the Galilaean. |
Matthew 26:70 | But he denied before all, saying, I do not know what thou sayest. | And he denied before all, saying, `I have not known what thou sayest.` | But he said before them all that it was false, saying, I have no knowledge of what you say. |
Matthew 26:71 | And when he had gone out into the entrance, another [maid] saw him, and says to those there, This [man] also was with Jesus the Nazaraean. | And he having gone forth to the porch, another female saw him, and saith to those there, `And this one was with Jesus of Nazareth;` | And when he had gone out into the doorway, another saw him and says to those who were there, This man was with Jesus the Nazarene. |
Matthew 26:72 | And again he denied with an oath: I do not know the man. | and again did he deny with an oath `I have not known the man.` | And again he said with an oath, I have no knowledge of the man. |
Matthew 26:73 | And after a little, those who stood [there], coming to [him], said to Peter, Truly *thou* too art of them, for also thy speech makes thee manifest. | And after a little those standing near having come, said to Peter, `Truly thou also art of them, for even thy speech doth make thee manifest.` | And after a little time those who were near came and said to Peter, Truly you are one of them; because your talk is witness against you. |
Matthew 26:74 | Then he began to curse and to swear, I know not the man. And immediately [the] cock crew. | Then began he to anathematise, and to swear `I have not known the man;` and immediately did a cock crow, | Then with curses and oaths he said, I have no knowledge of the man. And straight away there came the cry of a cock. |
Matthew 26:75 | And Peter remembered the word of Jesus, who had said [to him], Before [the] cock crow thou shalt deny me thrice. And he went forth without, and wept bitterly. | and Peter remembered the saying of Jesus, he having said to him `Before cock-crowing, thrice thou wilt deny me;` and having gone without, he did weep bitterly. | And the word of Jesus came back to Peter, when he said, Before the hour of the cock's cry, you will say three times that you have no knowledge of me. And he went out, weeping bitterly. |
