Mark 15:1 | And immediately in the morning the chief priests, having taken counsel with the elders and scribes and the whole sanhedrim, bound Jesus and carried [him] away, and delivered [him] up to Pilate. | And immediately, in the morning, the chief priests having made a consultation, with the elders, and scribes, and the whole sanhedrim, having bound Jesus, did lead away, and delivered [him] to Pilate; | At earliest dawn, after the High Priests had held a consultation with the Elders and Scribes, they and the entire Sanhedrin bound Jesus and took Him away and handed Him over to Pilate. |
Mark 15:2 | And Pilate asked him, Art *thou* the King of the Jews? And he answered and said to him, *Thou* sayest. | and Pilate questioned him, `Art thou the king of the Jews?` and he answering said to him, `Thou dost say [it].` | So Pilate questioned Him. "Are *you* the King of the Jews?" he asked. "I am," replied Jesus. |
Mark 15:3 | And the chief priests accused him urgently. | And the chief priests were accusing him of many things, [but he answered nothing.] | Then, as the High Priests went on heaping accusations on Him, |
Mark 15:4 | And Pilate asked him again, saying, Answerest thou nothing? See of how many things they bear witness against thee. | And Pilate again questioned him, saying, `Thou dost not answer anything! lo, how many things they do testify against thee!` | Pilate again and again asked Him, "Do you make no reply? Listen to the many charges they are bringing against you." |
Mark 15:5 | But Jesus still answered nothing, so that Pilate marvelled. | and Jesus did no more answer anything, so that Pilate wondered. | But Jesus made no further answer: so that Pilate wondered. |
Mark 15:6 | But at [the] feast he released to them one prisoner, whomsoever they begged [of him]. | And at every feast he was releasing to them one prisoner, whomsoever they were asking; | Now at the Festival it was customary for Pilate to release to the Jews any one prisoner whom they might beg off from punishment; |
Mark 15:7 | Now there was the [person] named Barabbas bound with those who had made insurrection with [him], [and] that had committed murder in the insurrection. | and there was [one] named Barabbas, bound with those making insurrection with him, who had in the insurrection committed murder. | and at this time a man named Barabbas was in prison among the insurgents persons who in the insurrection had committed murder. |
Mark 15:8 | And the crowd crying out began to beg [that he would do] to them as he had always done. | And the multitude having cried out, began to ask for themselves as he was always doing to them, | So the people came crowding up, asking Pilate to grant them the usual favour. |
Mark 15:9 | But Pilate answered them saying, Will ye that I release to you the King of the Jews? | and Pilate answered them, saying, `Will ye [that] I shall release to you the king of the Jews?` | "Shall I release for you the King of the Jews?" answered Pilate. |
Mark 15:10 | for he knew that the chief priests had delivered him up through envy. | for he knew that because of envy the chief priests had delivered him up; | For he could see that it was out of sheer spite that the High Priests had handed Him over. |
Mark 15:11 | But the chief priests stirred up the crowd that he might rather release Barabbas to them. | and the chief priests did move the multitude, that he might rather release Barabbas to them. | But the High Priests urged on the crowd to obtain Barabbas's release in preference; |
Mark 15:12 | And Pilate answering said to them again, What will ye then that I do [to him] whom ye call King of the Jews? | And Pilate answering, again said to them, `What, then, will ye [that] I shall do to him whom ye call king of the Jews?` | and when Pilate again asked them, "What then shall I do to the man you call King of the Jews?" |
Mark 15:13 | And they cried out again, Crucify him. | and they again cried out, `Crucify him.` | they once more shouted out, "Crucify Him!" |
Mark 15:14 | And Pilate said to them, What evil then has he done? But they cried out the more urgently, Crucify him. | And Pilate said to them, `Why what evil did he?` and they cried out the more vehemently, `Crucify him;` | "Why, what crime has he committed?" asked Pilate. But they vehemently shouted, "Crucify Him!" |
Mark 15:15 | And Pilate, desirous of contenting the crowd, released to them Barabbas, and delivered up Jesus, when he had scourged him, that he might be crucified. | and Pilate, wishing to content the multitude, released to them Barabbas, and delivered up Jesus having scourged [him] that he might be crucified. | So Pilate, wishing to satisfy the mob, released Barabbas for them, and after scourging Jesus handed Him over for crucifixion. |
Mark 15:16 | And the soldiers led him away into the court which is [called the] praetorium, and they call together the whole band. | And the soldiers led him away into the hall, which is Praetorium, and call together the whole band, | Then the soldiers led Him away into the court of the Palace (the Praetorium), and calling together the whole battalion |
Mark 15:17 | And they clothe him with purple, and bind round on him a crown of thorns which they had plaited. | and clothe him with purple, and having plaited a crown of thorns, they put [it] on him, | they arrayed Him in crimson, placed on His head a wreath of thorny twigs which they had twisted, |
Mark 15:18 | And they began to salute him, Hail, King of the Jews! | and began to salute him, `Hail, King of the Jews.` | and went on to salute Him with shouts of "Long live the King of the Jews." |
Mark 15:19 | And they struck his head with a reed, and spat on him, and, bending the knee, did him homage. | And they were smiting him on the head with a reed, and were spitting on him, and having bent the knee, were bowing to him, | Then they began to beat Him on the head with a cane, to spit on Him, and to do Him homage on bended knees. |
Mark 15:20 | And when they had mocked him, they took the purple off him, and put his own clothes on him; and they lead him out that they may crucify him. | and when they [had] mocked him, they took the purple from off him, and clothed him in his own garments, and they led him forth, that they may crucify him. | At last, having finished their sport, they took the robe off Him, put His own clothes on Him, and led Him out to crucify Him. |
Mark 15:21 | And they compel to go [with them] a certain passer-by, Simon, a Cyrenian, coming from the field, the father of Alexander and Rufus, that he might carry his cross. | And they impress a certain one passing by Simon, a Cyrenian, coming from the field, the father of Alexander and Rufus that he may bear his cross, | One Simon, a Cyrenaean, the father of Alexander and Rufus, was passing along, coming from the country: him they compelled to carry His cross. |
Mark 15:22 | And they bring him to the place [called] Golgotha, which, being interpreted, is Place of a skull. | and they bring him to the place Golgotha, which is, being interpreted, `Place of a skull;` | So they brought Him to the place called Golgotha, which, being translated, means `Skull-ground.' |
Mark 15:23 | And they offered him wine [to drink] medicated with myrrh; but he did not take [it]. | and they were giving him to drink wine mingled with myrrh, and he did not receive. | Here they offered Him wine mixed with myrrh; but He refused it. |
Mark 15:24 | And having crucified him, they part his clothes amongst [themselves], casting lots on them, what each one should take. | And having crucified him, they were dividing his garments, casting a lot upon them, what each may take; | Then they crucified Him. This done, they divided His garments among them, drawing lots to decide what each should take. |
Mark 15:25 | And it was the third hour, and they crucified him. | and it was the third hour, and they crucified him; | It was nine o'clock in the morning when they crucified Him. |
Mark 15:26 | And the superscription of what he was accused of was written up: The King of the Jews. | and the inscription of his accusation was written above `The King of the Jews.` | Over His head was the notice in writing of the charge against Him: THE KING OF THE JEWS. |
Mark 15:27 | And with him they crucify two robbers, one on his right hand, and one on his left. | And with him they crucify two robbers, one on the right hand, and one on his left, | And together with Jesus they crucified two robbers, one at His right hand and one at His left. |
Mark 15:28 | [And the scripture was fulfilled which says, And he was reckoned with the lawless.] | and the Writing was fulfilled that is saying, `And with lawless ones he was numbered.` | [] |
Mark 15:29 | And they that passed by reviled him, shaking their heads, and saying, Aha, thou that destroyest the temple and buildest it in three days, | And those passing by were speaking evil of him, shaking their heads, and saying, `Ah, the thrower down of the sanctuary, and in three days the builder! | And all the passers-by reviled Him. They shook their heads at Him and said, "Ah! you who were for destroying the Sanctuary and building a new one in three days, |
Mark 15:30 | save thyself, and descend from the cross. | save thyself, and come down from the cross!` | come down from the cross and save yourself." |
Mark 15:31 | In like manner the chief priests also, with the scribes, mocking with one another, said, He saved others; himself he cannot save. | And in like manner also the chief priests, mocking with one another, with the scribes, said, `Others he saved; himself he is not able to save. | In the same way the High Priests also, as well as the Scribes, kept on scoffing at Him, saying to one another, "He has saved others: himself he cannot save! |
Mark 15:32 | Let the Christ the King of Israel descend now from the cross, that we may see and may believe. And they that were crucified with him reproached him. | The Christ! the king of Israel let him come down now from the cross, that we may see and believe;` and those crucified with him were reproaching him. | This Christ, the King of Israel, let him come down now from the cross, that we may see and believe." Even the men who were being crucified with Him heaped insults on Him. |
Mark 15:33 | And when [the] sixth hour was come, there came darkness over the whole land until [the] ninth hour; | And the sixth hour having come, darkness came over the whole land till the ninth hour, | At noon there came a darkness over the whole land, lasting till three o'clock in the afternoon. |
Mark 15:34 | and at the ninth hour, Jesus cried with a loud voice, [saying], Eloi, Eloi, lama sabachthani? which is, being interpreted, My God, my God, why hast thou forsaken me? | and at the ninth hour Jesus cried with a great voice, saying, `Eloi, Eloi, lamma sabachthani?` which is, being interpreted, `My God, my God, why didst Thou forsake me?` | But at three o'clock Jesus cried out with a loud voice, "Elohi, Elohi, lama sabachthani?" which means, "My God, My God, why hast Thou forsaken me?" |
Mark 15:35 | And some of those who stood by, when they heard [it], said, Behold, he calls for Elias. | And certain of those standing by, having heard, said, `Lo, Elijah he doth call;` | Some of the bystanders, hearing Him, said, "Listen, he is calling for Elijah!" |
Mark 15:36 | And one, running and filling a sponge with vinegar, fixed it on a reed, and gave him to drink, saying, Let alone, let us see if Elias comes to take him down. | and one having run, and having filled a spunge with vinegar, having put [it] also on a reed, was giving him to drink, saying, `Let alone, let us see if Elijah doth come to take him down.` | Then a man ran to fill a sponge with sour wine, and he put it on the end of a cane and placed it to His lips, saying at the same time, "Wait! let us see whether Elijah will come and take him down." |
Mark 15:37 | And Jesus, having uttered a loud cry, expired. | And Jesus having uttered a loud cry, yielded the spirit, | But Jesus uttered a loud cry and yielded up His spirit. |
Mark 15:38 | And the veil of the temple was rent in two from the top to the bottom. | and the veil of the sanctuary was rent in two, from top to bottom, | And the curtain in the Sanctuary was torn in two, from top to bottom. |
Mark 15:39 | And the centurion who stood by over against him, when he saw that he had expired having thus cried out, said, Truly this man was Son of God. | and the centurion who was standing over-against him, having seen that, having so cried out, he yielded the spirit, said, `Truly this man was Son of God.` | And when the Centurion who stood in front of the cross saw that He was dead, he exclaimed, "This man was indeed God's Son." |
Mark 15:40 | And there were women also looking on from afar off, among whom were both Mary of Magdala, and Mary the mother of James the less and of Joses, and Salome; | And there were also women afar off beholding, among whom was also Mary the Magdalene, and Mary of James the less, and of Joses, and Salome, | There were also a party of women looking on from a distance; among them being both Mary of Magdala and Mary the mother of James the Little and of Joses, and Salome |
Mark 15:41 | who also, when he was in Galilee, followed him and ministered to him; and many others who came up with him to Jerusalem. | (who also, when he was in Galilee, were following him, and were ministering to him,) and many other women who came up with him to Jerusalem. | all of whom in the Galilaean days had habitually been with Him and cared for Him, as well as many other women who had come up to Jerusalem with Him. |
Mark 15:42 | And when it was already evening, since it was [the] preparation, that is, [the day] before a sabbath, | And now evening having come, seeing it was the preparation, that is, the fore-sabbath, | Towards sunset, as it was the Preparation that is, the day preceding the Sabbath |
Mark 15:43 | Joseph of Arimathaea, an honourable councillor, who also himself was awaiting the kingdom of God, coming, emboldened himself and went in to Pilate and begged the body of Jesus. | Joseph of Arimathea, an honourable counsellor, who also himself was waiting for the reign of God, came, boldly entered in unto Pilate, and asked the body of Jesus. | Joseph of Arimathaea came, a highly respected member of the Council, who himself also was living in expectation of the Kingdom of God. He summoned up courage to go in to see Pilate and beg for the body of Jesus. |
Mark 15:44 | And Pilate wondered if he were already dead; and having called to [him] the centurion, he inquired of him if he had long died. | And Pilate wondered if he were already dead, and having called near the centurion, did question him if he were long dead, | But Pilate could hardly believe that He was already dead. He called, however, for the Centurion and inquired whether He had been long dead; |
Mark 15:45 | And when he knew from the centurion, he granted the body to Joseph. | and having known [it] from the centurion, he granted the body to Joseph. | and having ascertained the fact he granted the body to Joseph. |
Mark 15:46 | And having bought fine linen, [and] having taken him down, he swathed him in the fine linen, and laid him in a sepulchre which was cut out of rock, and rolled a stone to the door of the sepulchre. | And he, having brought fine linen, and having taken him down, wrapped him in the linen, and laid him in a sepulchre that had been hewn out of a rock, and he rolled a stone unto the door of the sepulchre, | He, having bought a sheet of linen, took Him down, wrapped Him in the sheet and laid Him in a tomb hewn in the rock; after which he rolled a stone against the entrance to the tomb. |
Mark 15:47 | And Mary of Magdala and Mary the [mother] of Joses saw where he was put. | and Mary the Magdalene, and Mary of Joses, were beholding where he is laid. | Mary of Magdala and Mary the mother of Joses were looking on to see where He was put. |
