Genesis 24:1 | Now Abraham was old; and advanced in age: and the Lord had blessed him in all things. | And Abraham was old, [and] well stricken in age. And Jehovah had blessed Abraham in all things. | Now Abraham was old and far on in years: and the Lord had given him everything in full measure. |
Genesis 24:2 | And he said to the elder servant of his house, who was ruler over all he had: Put thy hand under my thigh, | And Abraham said unto his servant, the elder of his house, that ruled over all that he had, Put, I pray thee, thy hand under my thigh. | And Abraham said to his chief servant, the manager of all his property, Come now, put your hand under my leg: |
Genesis 24:3 | That I may make thee swear by the Lord the God of heaven and earth, that thou take not a wife for my son, of the daughters of the Chanaanites, among whom I dwell: | And I will make thee swear by Jehovah, the God of heaven and the God of the earth, that thou wilt not take a wife for my son of the daughters of the Canaanites, among whom I dwell. | And take an oath by the Lord, the God of heaven and the God of the earth, that you will not get a wife for my son Isaac from the daughters of the Canaanites among whom I am living; |
Genesis 24:4 | But that thou go to my own country and kindred, and take a wife from thence for my son Isaac. | But thou shalt go unto my country, and to my kindred, and take a wife for my son Isaac. | But that you will go into my country and to my relations and get a wife there for my son Isaac. |
Genesis 24:5 | The servant answered: If the woman will not come with me into this land, must I bring thy son back again to the place, from whence thou camest out? | And the servant said unto him, Peradventure the woman will not be willing to follow me unto this land. Must I needs bring thy son again unto the land from whence thou camest? | And the servant said, If by chance the woman will not come with me into this land, am I to take your son back again to the land from which you came? |
Genesis 24:6 | And Abraham said: Beware thou never bring my son back again thither. | And Abraham said unto him, Beware thou that thou bring not my son thither again. | And Abraham said, Take care that you do not let my son go back to that land. |
Genesis 24:7 | The Lord God of heaven, who took me out of my father's house, and out of my native country, who spoke to me, and swore to me, saying: To thy seed will I give this land: he will send his angel before thee, and thou shalt take from thence a wife for my son. | Jehovah, the God of heaven, who took me from my father's house, and from the land of my nativity, and who spake unto me, and who sware unto me, saying, Unto thy seed will I give this land. He will send his angel before thee, and thou shalt take a wife for my son from thence. | The Lord God of heaven, who took me from my father's house and from the land of my birth, and made an oath to me, saying, To your seed I will give this land: he will send his angel before you and give you a wife for my son in that land. |
Genesis 24:8 | But if the woman will not follow thee, thou shalt not be bound by the oath; only bring not my son back thither again. | And if the woman be not willing to follow thee, then thou shalt be clear from this my oath. Only thou shalt not bring my son thither again. | And if the woman will not come with you, then you are free from this oath; only do not take my son back there. |
Genesis 24:9 | The servant therefore put his hand under the thigh of Abraham his lord, and swore to him upon this word. | And the servant put his hand under the thigh of Abraham his master, and sware to him concerning this matter. | And the servant put his hand under Abraham's leg, and gave him his oath about this thing. |
Genesis 24:10 | And he took ten camels of his master's herd, and departed, carrying something of all his goods with him, and he set forth and went on to Mesopotamia to the city of Nachor. | And the servant took ten camels, of the camels of his master, and departed, having all goodly things of his master's in his hand. And he arose, and went to Mesopotamia, unto the city of Nahor. | And the servant took ten of his master's camels, and all sorts of good things of his master's, and went to Mesopotamia, to the town of Nahor. |
Genesis 24:11 | And when he had made the camels lie down without the town near a well of water in Evening, at the time when women were wont to come out to draw water, he said: | And he made the camels to kneel down without the city by the well of water at the time of evening, the time that women go out to draw water. | And he made the camels take their rest outside the town by the water-spring in the evening, at the time when the women came to get water. |
Genesis 24:12 | O Lord the God of my master Abraham, meet me today, I beseech thee, and show kindness to my master Abraham. | And he said, O Jehovah, the God of my master Abraham, send me, I pray thee, good speed this day, and show kindness unto my master Abraham. | And he said, O Lord, the God of my master Abraham, let me do well in what I have undertaken this day, and give your mercy to my master Abraham. |
Genesis 24:13 | Behold I stand nigh the spring of water, and the daughters of the inhabitants of this city will come out to draw water. | Behold, I am standing by the fountain of water. And the daughters of the men of the city are coming out to draw water. | See, I am waiting here by the water-spring; and the daughters of the town are coming out to get water: |
Genesis 24:14 | Now, therefore, the maid to whom I shall say: Let down thy pitcher that I may drink: and she shall answer, Drink, and I will give thy camels drink also: let it be the same whom thou hast provided for thy servant Isaac: and by this I shall understand, that thou hast shown kindness to my master. | And let it come to pass, that the damsel to whom I shall say, Let down thy pitcher, I pray thee, that I may drink. And she shall say, Drink, and I will give thy camels drink also. Let the same be she that thou hast appointed for thy servant Isaac. And thereby shall I know that thou hast showed kindness unto my master. | Now, may the girl to whom I say, Let down your vessel and give me a drink, and who says in answer, Here is a drink for you and let me give water to your camels: may she be the one marked out by you for your servant Isaac: so may I be certain that you have been good to my master Abraham. |
Genesis 24:15 | he had not yet ended these words within himself, and behold Rebecca came out, the daughter of Bathuel, son of Melcha, wife to Nachor the brother of Abraham, having a pitcher on her shoulder: | And it came to pass, before he had done speaking, that, behold, Rebekah came out, who was born to Bethuel the son of Milcah, the wife of Nahor, Abraham's brother, with her pitcher upon her shoulder. | And even before his words were ended, Rebekah, the daughter of Bethuel, the son of Milcah, who was the wife of Nahor, Abraham's brother, came out with her water-vessel on her arm. |
Genesis 24:16 | An exceedingly comely maid, and a most beautiful virgin, and not known to man: and she went down to the spring, and filled her pitcher and was coming back. | And the damsel was very fair to look upon, a virgin, neither had any man known her. And she went down to the fountain, and filled her pitcher, and came up. | She was a very beautiful girl, a virgin, who had never been touched by a man: and she went down to the spring to get water in her vessel. |
Genesis 24:17 | And the servant ran to meet her, and said: Give me a little water to drink of thy pitcher. | And the servant ran to meet her, and said, Give me to drink, I pray thee, a little water from thy pitcher. | And the servant came running to her and said, Give me a little water from your vessel. |
Genesis 24:18 | And she answered: Drink, my lord. And quickly she let down the pitcher upon her arm, and gave him drink. | And she said, Drink, my lord. And she hasted, and let down her pitcher upon her hand, and gave him drink. | And she said, Take a drink, my lord: and quickly letting down her vessel onto her hand, she gave him a drink. |
Genesis 24:19 | And when he had drunk, she said: I will draw water for thy camels also, till they all drink. | And when she had done giving him drink, she said, I will draw for thy camels also, until they have done drinking. | And having done so, she said, I will get water for your camels till they have had enough. |
Genesis 24:20 | And pouring out the pitcher into the troughs, she ran back to the well to draw water: and having drawn she gave to all the camels. | And she hasted, and emptied her pitcher into the trough, and ran again unto the well to draw, and drew for all his camels. | And after putting the water from her vessel into the animals' drinking-place, she went quickly back to the spring and got water for all the camels. |
Genesis 24:21 | But he musing beheld her with silence, desirous to know whether the Lord had made his journey prosperous or not. | And the man looked stedfastly on her, holding his peace, to know whether Jehovah had made his journey prosperous or not. | And the man, looking at her, said nothing, waiting to see if the Lord had given his journey a good outcome. |
Genesis 24:22 | And after that the camels had drunk, the man took out golden earrings, weighing two sicles: and as many bracelets of ten sicles weight. | And it came to pass, as the camels had done drinking, that the man took a golden ring of half a shekel weight, and two bracelets for her hands of ten shekels weight of gold, | And when the camels had had enough, the man took a gold nose-ring, half a shekel in weight, and two ornaments for her arms of ten shekels weight of gold; |
Genesis 24:23 | And he said to her: Whose daughter art thou? tell me: is there any place in thy father's house to lodge? | and said, Whose daughter art thou? Tell me, I pray thee. Is there room in thy father's house for us to lodge in? | And said to her, Whose daughter are you? is there room in your father's house for us? |
Genesis 24:24 | And she answered: I am the daughter of Bathuel, the son of Melcha, whom she bore to Nachor. | And she said unto him, I am the daughter of Bethuel the son of Milcah, whom she bare unto Nahor. | And she said to him, I am the daughter of Bethuel, the son of Milcah, Nahor's wife. |
Genesis 24:25 | And she said moreover to him: We have good store of both straw and hay, and a large place to lodge in. | She said moreover unto him, We have both straw and provender enough, and room to lodge in. | And she said, We have a great store of dry grass and cattle-food, and there is room for you. |
Genesis 24:26 | The man bowed himself down, and adored the Lord, | And the man bowed his head, and worshipped Jehovah. | And with bent head the man gave worship to the Lord; |
Genesis 24:27 | Saying: Blessed be the Lord God of my master Abraham, who hath not taken away his mercy and truth from my master, and hath brought me the straight way into the house of my master's brother. | And he said, Blessed be Jehovah, the God of my master Abraham, who hath not forsaken his lovingkindness and his truth toward my master. As for me, Jehovah hath led me in the way to the house of my master's brethren. | And said, Praise be to the Lord, the God of my master Abraham, who has given a sign that he is good and true to my master, by guiding me straight to the house of my master's family. |
Genesis 24:28 | Then the maid ran, and told in her mother's house, all that she had heard. | And the damsel ran, and told her mother's house according to these words. | So the girl went running and took the news of these things to her mother's house |
Genesis 24:29 | And Rebecca had a brother named Laban, who went out in haste to the man, to the well. | And Rebekah had a brother, and his name was Laban: and Laban ran out unto the man, unto the fountain. | Now Rebekah had a brother named Laban, and he came out quickly to the man at the water-spring. |
Genesis 24:30 | And when he had seen the earrings and bracelets in his sister's hands, and had heard all that she related, saying: Thus and thus the man spoke to me: he came to the man who stood by the camels, and near to the spring of water, | And it came to pass, when he saw the ring, and the bracelets upon his sister's hands, and when he heard the words of Rebekah his sister, saying, Thus spake the man unto me. That he came unto the man. And, behold, he was standing by the camels at the fountain. | And when he saw the nose-ring and the ornaments on his sister's hands, and when she gave him word of what the man had said to her, then he went out to the man who was waiting with the camels by the water-spring. |
Genesis 24:31 | And said to him: Come in, thou blessed of the Lord: why standest thou without? I have prepared the house, and a place for the camels. | And he said, Come in, thou blessed of Jehovah. Wherefore standest thou without? For I have prepared the house, and room for the camels. | And he said to him, Come in, you on whom is the blessing of the Lord; why are you waiting outside? for I have made the house ready for you, and a place for the camels. |
Genesis 24:32 | And he brought him in into his lodging: and he unharnessed the camels and gave straw and hay, and water to wash his feet, and the feet of the men that were come with him. | And the man came into the house, and he ungirded the camels. And he gave straw and provender for the camels, and water to wash his feet and the feet of the men that were with him. | Then the man came into the house, and Laban took their cords off the camels and gave them dry grass and food, and he gave to him and the men who were with him water for washing their feet. |
Genesis 24:33 | And bread was set before him. But he said: I will not eat, till I tell my message. He answered him: Speak. | And there was set food before him to eat. But he said, I will not eat, until I have told mine errand. And he said, Speak on. | And meat was put before him, but he said, I will not take food till I have made my business clear to you. And they said, Do so. |
Genesis 24:34 | And he said: I am the servant of Abraham: | And he said, I am Abraham's servant. | And he said, I am Abraham's servant. |
Genesis 24:35 | And the Lord hath blessed my master wonderfully, and he is become great: and he hath given him sheep and oxen, silver and gold, menservants and womenservants, camels and asses. | And Jehovah hath blessed my master greatly. And he is become great. And he hath given him flocks and herds, and silver and gold, and men-servants and maid-servants, and camels and asses. | The Lord has given my master every blessing, and he has become great: he has given him flocks and herds and silver and gold, and men-servants and women-servants and camels and asses. |
Genesis 24:36 | And Sara my master's wife hath borne my master a son in her old age, and he hath given him all that he had. | And Sarah my master's wife bare a son to my master when she was old. And unto him hath he given all that he hath. | And when Sarah, my master's wife, was old, she gave birth to a son, to whom he has given all he has. |
Genesis 24:37 | And my master made me swear, saying: Thou shalt not take a wife for my son of the Chanaanites, in whose land I dwell: | And my master made me swear, saying, Thou shalt not take a wife for my son of the daughters of the Canaanites, in whose land I dwell. | And my master made me take an oath, saying, Do not get a wife for my son from the daughters of the Canaanites among whom I am living; |
Genesis 24:38 | But thou shalt go to my father's house, and shalt take a wife of my own kindred for my son: | But thou shalt go unto my father's house, and to my kindred, and take a wife for my son. | But go to my father's house and to my relations for a wife for my son. |
Genesis 24:39 | But I answered my master: What if the woman will not come with me? | And I said unto my master, Peradventure the woman will not follow me. | And I said to my master, What if the woman will not come with me? |
Genesis 24:40 | The Lord, said he, in whose sight I walk, will send his angel with thee, and will direct thy way: and thou shalt take a wife for my son of my own kindred, and of my father's house. | And he said unto me, Jehovah, before whom I walk, will send his angel with thee, and prosper thy way. And thou shalt take a wife for my son of my kindred, and of my father's house. | And he said, The Lord, whom I have ever kept before me, will send his angel with you, who will make it possible for you to get a wife for my son from my relations and my father's house; |
Genesis 24:41 | But thou shalt be clear from my curse, when thou shalt come to my kindred, if they will not give thee one. | Then shalt thou be clear from my oath, when thou comest to my kindred. And if they give her not to thee, thou shalt be clear from my oath. | And you will be free from your oath to me when you come to my people; and if they will not give her to you, you will be free from your oath. |
Genesis 24:42 | And I came today to the well of water, and said: O Lord God of my master Abraham, if thou hast prospered my way, wherein I now walk, | And I came this day unto the fountain, and said, O Jehovah, the God of my master Abraham, if now thou do prosper my way which I go. | And I came today to the water-spring, and I said, O Lord, the God of my master Abraham, if it is your purpose to give a good outcome to my journey, |
Genesis 24:43 | Behold I stand by the well of water, and the virgin, that shall come out to draw water, who shall hear me say: Give me a little water to drink of thy pitcher: | Behold, I am standing by the fountain of water. And let it come to pass, that the maiden that cometh forth to draw, to whom I shall say, Give me, I pray thee, a little water from thy pitcher to drink. | Let it come about that, while I am waiting here by the water-spring, if a girl comes to get water and I say to her, Give me a little water from your vessel, and she says, |
Genesis 24:44 | And shall say to me: Both drink thou, and I will also draw for thy camels: let the same be the woman, whom the Lord hath prepared for my master's son. | And she shall say to me, Both drink thou, and I will also draw for thy camels. Let the same be the woman whom Jehovah hath appointed for my master's son. | Take a drink, and I will get water for your camels; let her be the woman marked out by the Lord for my master's son. |
Genesis 24:45 | And whilst I pondered these things secretly with myself, Rebecca appeared coming with a pitcher, which she carried on her shoulder: and she went down to the well and drew water. And I said to her: Give me a little to drink. | And before I had done speaking in my heart, behold, Rebekah came forth with her pitcher on her shoulder. And she went down unto the fountain, and drew. And I said unto her, Let me drink, I pray thee. | And even while I was saying this to myself, Rebekah came out with her vessel on her arm; and she went down to the spring to get water; and I said to her, Give me a drink. |
Genesis 24:46 | And she speedily let down the pitcher from her shoulder, and said to me: Both drink thou, and to thy camels I will give drink. I drank, and she watered the camels. | And she made haste, and let down her pitcher from her shoulder, and said, Drink, and I will give thy camels drink also. So I drank, and she made the camels drink also. | And straight away she took down her vessel from her arm, and said, Take a drink, and I will get water for your camels. |
Genesis 24:47 | And I asked her, and said: Whose daughter art thou? And she answered: I am the daughter of Bathuel, the son of Nachor, whom Melcha bore to him. So I put earrings on her to adorn her face, and I put bracelets on her hands. | And I asked her, and said, Whose daughter art thou? And she said, The daughter of Bethuel, Nahor's son, whom Milcah bare unto him. And I put the ring upon her nose, and the bracelets upon her hands. | And questioning her, I said, Whose daughter are you? And she said, The daughter of Bethuel, the son of Nahor, and Milcah his wife. Then I put the ring on her nose and the ornaments on her hands. |
Genesis 24:48 | And falling down I adored the Lord, blessing the Lord God of my master Abraham, who hath brought me the straight way to take the daughter of my master's brother for his son. | And I bowed my head, and worshipped Jehovah, and blessed Jehovah, the God of my master Abraham, who had led me in the right way to take my master's brother's daughter for his son. | And with bent head I gave worship and praise to the Lord, the God of my master Abraham, by whom I had been guided in the right way, to get the daughter of my master's brother for his son. |
Genesis 24:49 | Wherefore if you do according to mercy and truth with my master, tell me: but if it please you otherwise, tell me that also, that I may go to the right hand, or to the left. | And now if ye will deal kindly and truly with my master, tell me. And if not, tell me. That I may turn to the right hand, or to the left. | And now, say if you will do what is good and right for my master or not, in order that it may be clear to me what I have to do. |
Genesis 24:50 | And Laban and Bathuel answered: The word hath proceeded from the Lord, we cannot speak any other thing to thee but his pleasure. | Then Laban and Bethuel answered and said, The thing proceedeth from Jehovah. We cannot speak unto thee bad or good. | Then Laban and Bethuel said in answer, This is the Lord's doing: it is not for us to say Yes or No to you. |
Genesis 24:51 | Behold Rebecca is before thee, take her and go thy way, and let her be the wife of thy master's son, as the Lord hath spoken. | Behold, Rebekah is before thee, take her, and go, and let her be thy master's son's wife, as Jehovah hath spoken. | See, here is Rebekah: take her and go, and let her be your master's son's wife, as the Lord has said. |
Genesis 24:52 | WHich when Abraham's servant heard, falling down to the ground he adored the Lord. | And it came to pass, that, when Abraham's servant heard their words, he bowed himself down to the earth unto Jehovah. | And at these words, Abraham's servant went down on his face and gave praise to the Lord. |
Genesis 24:53 | And bringing forth vessels of silver and gold, and garments, he gave them to Rebecca for a present. He offered gifts also to her brothers, and to her mother. | And the servant brought forth jewels of silver, and jewels of gold, and raiment, and gave them to Rebekah. He gave also to her brother and to her mother precious things. | Then he took jewels of silver and jewels of gold and fair robes and gave them to Rebekah: and he gave things of value to her mother and her brother. |
Genesis 24:54 | And a banquet was made, and they ate and drank together, and lodged there. And in the morning, the servant arose, and said: Let me depart, that I may go to my master. | And they did eat and drink, he and the men that were with him, and tarried all night. And they rose up in the morning, and he said, Send me away unto my master. | Then he and the men who were with him had food and drink, and took their rest there that night; and in the morning he got up, and said, Let me now go back to my master. |
Genesis 24:55 | And her brother and mother answered: Let the maid stay at least ten days with us, and afterwards she shall depart. | And her brother and her mother said, Let the damsel abide with us [a few] days, at the least ten. After that she shall go. | But her brother and her mother said, Let the girl be with us a week or ten days, and then she may go. |
Genesis 24:56 | Stay me not, said he, because the Lord hath prospered my way: send me away, that I may go to my master. | And he said unto them, Hinder me not, seeing Jehovah hath prospered my way. Send me away that I may go to my master. | And he said, Do not keep me; the Lord has given a good outcome to my journey; let me now go back to my master. |
Genesis 24:57 | And they said: Let us call the maid, and ask her will. | And they said, We will call the damsel, and inquire at her mouth. | And they said, We will send for the girl, and let her make the decision. |
Genesis 24:58 | And they called her, and when she was come, they asked: Wilt thou go with this man? She said: I will go. | And they called Rebekah, and said unto her, Wilt thou go with this man? And she said, I will go. | And they sent for Rebekah and said to her, Are you ready to go with this man? And she said, I am ready. |
Genesis 24:59 | So they sent her away, and her nurse, and Abraham's servant, and his company, | And they sent away Rebekah their sister, and her nurse, and Abraham's servant, and his men. | So they sent their sister Rebekah and her servant with Abraham's servant and his men. |
Genesis 24:60 | Wishing prosperity to their sister, and saying: Thou art our sister, mayst thou increase to thousands of thousands, and may thy seed possess the gates of their enemies. | And they blessed Rebekah, and said unto her, Our sister, be thou [the mother] of thousands of ten thousands, and let thy seed possess the gate of those that hate them. | And they gave Rebekah their blessing, saying, O sister, may you be the mother of thousands and ten thousands; and may your seed overcome all those who make war against them. |
Genesis 24:61 | So Rebecca and her maids, being set upon camels, followed the man: who with speed returned to his master. | And Rebekah arose, and her damsels, and they rode upon the camels, and followed the man. And the servant took Rebekah, and went his way. | So Rebekah and her servant-women went with the man, seated on the camels; and so the servant took Rebekah and went on his way. |
Genesis 24:62 | At the same time Isaac was walking along the way to the well which is called Of the living and the seeing: for he dwelt in the south country. | And Isaac came from the way of Beer-lahai-roi. For he dwelt in the land of the South. | Now Isaac had come through the waste land to Beer-lahai-roi; for he was living in the South. |
Genesis 24:63 | And he was gone forth to meditate in the field, the day being now well spent: and when he had lifted up his eyes, he saw camels coming afar off. | And Isaac went out to meditate in the field at the eventide. And he lifted up his eyes, and saw, and, behold, there were camels coming. | And when the evening was near, he went wandering out into the fields, and lifting up his eyes he saw camels coming. |
Genesis 24:64 | Rebecca also, when she saw Isaac, lighted off the camel, | And Rebekah lifted up her eyes, and when she saw Isaac, she alighted from the camel. | And when Rebekah, looking up, saw Isaac, she got down from her camel, |
Genesis 24:65 | And said to the servant: Who is that man who cometh towards us along the field? And he said to her: That man is my master. But she quickly took her cloak, and covered herself. | And she said unto the servant, What man is this that walketh in the field to meet us? And the servant said, It is my master. And she took her veil, and covered herself. | And said to the servant, Who is that man coming to us through the field? And the servant said, It is my master: then she took her veil, covering her face with it. |
Genesis 24:66 | And the servant told Isaac all that he had done. | And the servant told Isaac all the things that he had done. | Then the servant gave Isaac the story of all he had done. |
Genesis 24:67 | Who brought her into the tent of Sara his mother, and took her to wife: and he loved her so much, that it moderated the sorrow which was occasioned by his mother's death. | And Isaac brought her into his mother Sarah's tent, and took Rebekah, and she became his wife. And he loved her. And Isaac was comforted after his mother's death. | And Isaac took Rebekah into his tent and she became his wife; and in his love for her, Isaac was comforted after his father's death. |
