Hebrews 8:1 | Now of the things which we have spoken, this is the sum: We have such an high priest, who is set on the right hand of the throne of majesty in the heavens, | Now in the things which we are saying the chief point [is this]: We have such a high priest, who sat down on the right hand of the throne of the Majesty in the heavens, | Now of the things we are saying this is the chief point: We have such a high priest, who has taken his place at the right hand of God's high seat of glory in heaven, |
Hebrews 8:2 | A minister of the holies, and of the true tabernacle, which the Lord hath pitched, and not man. | a minister of the sanctuary, and of the true tabernacle, which the Lord pitched, not man. | As a servant of the holy things and of the true Tent, which was put up by God, not by man. |
Hebrews 8:3 | For every high priest is appointed to offer gifts and sacrifices: wherefore it is necessary that he also should have some thing to offer. | For every high priest is appointed to offer both gifts and sacrifices: wherefore it is necessary that this [high priest] also have somewhat to offer. | Now every high priest is given authority to take to God the things which are given and to make offerings; so that it is necessary for this man, like them, to have something for an offering. |
Hebrews 8:4 | If then he were on earth, he would not be a priest: seeing that there would be others to offer gifts according to the law, | Now if he were on earth, he would not be a priest at all, seeing there are those who offer the gifts according to the law; | If he had been on earth he would not have been a priest at all, because there are other priests who make the offerings ordered by the law; |
Hebrews 8:5 | Who serve unto the example and shadow of heavenly things. As it was answered to Moses, when he was to finish the tabernacle: See (saith he) that thou make all things according to the pattern which was shewn thee on the mount. | who serve [that which is] a copy and shadow of the heavenly things, even as Moses is warned [of God] when he is about to make the tabernacle: for, See, saith he, that thou make all things according to the pattern that was showed thee in the mount. | Being servants of that which is a copy and an image of the things in heaven, as Moses, when he was about to make the Tent, had special orders from God: for, See, he said, that you make everything like the design which you saw in the mountain. |
Hebrews 8:6 | But now he hath obtained a better ministry, by how much also he is a mediator of a better testament, which is established on better promises. | But now hath he obtained a ministry the more excellent, by so much as he is also the mediator of a better covenant, which hath been enacted upon better promises. | But now his position as priest is higher. because through him God has made a better agreement with man, based on the giving of better things. |
Hebrews 8:7 | For if that former had been faultless, there should not indeed a place have been sought for a second. | For if that first [covenant] had been faultless, then would no place have been sought for a second. | For if that first agreement had been as good as possible, there would have been no place for a second. |
Hebrews 8:8 | For finding fault with them, he saith: Behold, the days shall come, saith the Lord: and I will perfect unto the house of Israel, and unto the house of Juda, a new testament: | For finding fault with them, he saith, Behold, the days come, saith the Lord, That I will make a new covenant with the house of Israel and with the house of Judah; | For, protesting against them, he says, See, the days are coming when I will make a new agreement with the house of Israel, and with the house of Judah; |
Hebrews 8:9 | Not according to the testament which I made to their fathers, on the day when I took them by the hand to lead them out of the land of Egypt: because they continued not in my testament: and I regarded them not, saith the Lord. | Not according to the covenant that I made with their fathers In the day that I took them by the hand to lead them forth out of the land of Egypt; For they continued not in my covenant, And I regarded them not, saith the Lord. | Not like the agreement which I made with their fathers when I took them by the hand, to be their guide out of the land of Egypt; for they did not keep the agreement with me, and I gave them up, says the Lord. |
Hebrews 8:10 | For this is the testament which I will make to the house of Israel after those days, saith the Lord: I will give my laws into their mind, and in their heart will I write them: and I will be their God, and they shall be my people: | For this is the covenant that I will make with the house of Israel After those days, saith the Lord; I will put my laws into their mind, And on their heart also will I write them: And I will be to them a God, And they shall be to me a people: | For this is the agreement which I will make with the people of Israel after those days: I will put my laws into their minds, writing them in their hearts: and I will be their God, and they will be my people: |
Hebrews 8:11 | And they shall not teach every man his neighbour and every man his brother, saying, Know the Lord: for all shall know me from the least to the greatest of them: | And they shall not teach every man his fellow-citizen, And every man his brother, saying, Know the Lord: For all shall know me, From the least to the greatest of them. | And there will be no need for every man to be teaching his brother, or his neighbour, saying, This is the knowledge of the Lord: for they will all have knowledge of me, great and small. |
Hebrews 8:12 | Because I will be merciful to their iniquities, and their sins I will remember no more. | For I will be merciful to their iniquities, And their sins will I remember no more. | And I will have mercy on their evil-doing, and I will not keep their sins in mind. |
Hebrews 8:13 | Now in saying a new, he hath made the former old. And that which decayeth and groweth old, is near its end. | In that he saith, A new [covenant] he hath made the first old. But that which is becoming old and waxeth aged is nigh unto vanishing away. | When he says, A new agreement, he has made the first agreement old. But anything which is getting old and past use will not be seen much longer. |
