2nd-Peter 2:1 | But there were also false prophets among the people, even as there shall be among you lying teachers, who shall bring in sects of perdition, and deny the Lord who bought them: bringing upon themselves swift destruction. | But there arose false prophets also among the people, as among you also there shall be false teachers, who shall privily bring in destructive heresies, denying even the Master that bought them, bringing upon themselves swift destruction. | But there were also false prophets among the people, as there will be teachers of falsehood among you also, who will cunningly introduce fatal divisions, disowning even the Sovereign Lord who has redeemed them, and bringing on themselves swift destruction. |
2nd-Peter 2:2 | And many shall follow their riotousnesses, through whom the way of truth shall be evil spoken of. | And many shall follow their lascivious doings; by reason of whom the way of the truth shall be evil spoken of. | And in their immoral ways they will have many eager disciples, through whom religion will be brought into disrepute. |
2nd-Peter 2:3 | And through covetousness shall they with feigned words make merchandise of you. Whose judgment now of a long time lingereth not, and their perdition slumbereth not. | And in covetousness shall they with feigned words make merchandise of you: whose sentence now from of old lingereth not, and their destruction slumbereth not. | Thirsting for riches, they will trade on you with their canting talk. From of old their judgement has been working itself out, and their destruction has not been slumbering. |
2nd-Peter 2:4 | For if God spared not the angels that sinned, but delivered them, drawn down by infernal ropes to the lower hell, unto torments, to be reserved unto judgment: | For if God spared not angels when they sinned, but cast them down to hell, and committed them to pits of darkness, to be reserved unto judgment; | For God did not spare angels when they had sinned, but hurling them down to Tartarus consigned them to caves of darkness, keeping them in readiness for judgement. |
2nd-Peter 2:5 | And spared not the original world, but preserved Noe, the eighth person, the preacher of justice, bringing in the flood upon the world of the ungodly. | and spared not the ancient world, but preserved Noah with seven others, a preacher of righteousness, when he brought a flood upon the world of the ungodly; | And He did not spare the ancient world, although He preserved Noah, a herald of righteousness, with seven others, when He brought a deluge on the world of the ungodly. |
2nd-Peter 2:6 | And reducing the cities of the Sodomites, and of the Gomorrhites, into ashes, condemned them to be overthrown, making them an example to those that should after act wickedly. | and turning the cities of Sodom and Gomorrah into ashes condemned them with an overthrow, having made them an example unto those that should live ungodly; | He reduced to ashes the cities of Sodom and Gomorrah, and condemned them to overthrow, making them an example to people who might in future be living godless lives. |
2nd-Peter 2:7 | And delivered just Lot, oppressed by the injustice and lewd conversation of the wicked. | and delivered righteous Lot, sore distressed by the lascivious life of the wicked | But when righteous Lot was sore distressed by the gross misconduct of immoral men He rescued him. |
2nd-Peter 2:8 | For in sight and hearing he was just: dwelling among them, who from day to day vexed the just soul with unjust works. | (for that righteous man dwelling among them, in seeing and hearing, vexed [his] righteous soul from day to day with [their] lawless deeds): | (For their lawless deeds were torture, day after day, to the pure soul of that righteous man all that he saw and heard whilst living in their midst.) |
2nd-Peter 2:9 | The Lord knoweth how to deliver the godly from temptation, but to reserve the unjust unto the day of judgment to be tormented. | the Lord knoweth how to deliver the godly out of temptation, and to keep the unrighteous under punishment unto the day of judgment; | Since all this is so, the Lord knows how to rescue godly men from temptation, and on the other hand how to keep the unrighteous under punishment in readiness for the Day of Judgement, |
2nd-Peter 2:10 | And especially them who walk after the flesh in the lust of uncleanness, and despise government, audacious, self willed, they fear not to bring in sects, blaspheming. | but chiefly them that walk after the flesh in the lust of defilement, and despise dominion. Daring, self-willed, they tremble not to rail at dignities: | and especially those who are abandoned to sensuality craving, as they do, for polluted things, and scorning control. Fool-hardy and self-willed, they do not tremble when speaking evil of glorious beings; |
2nd-Peter 2:11 | Whereas angels who are greater in strength and power, bring not against themselves a railing judgment. | whereas angels, though greater in might and power, bring not a railing judgment against them before the Lord. | while angels, though greater than they in might and power, do not bring any insulting accusation against such in the presence of the Lord. |
2nd-Peter 2:12 | But these men, as irrational beasts, naturally tending to the snare and to destruction, blaspheming those things which they know not, shall perish in their corruption, | But these, as creatures without reason, born mere animals to be taken and destroyed, railing in matters whereof they are ignorant, shall in their destroying surely be destroyed, | But these men, like brute beasts, created (with their natural instincts) only to be captured or destroyed, are abusive in matters of which they are ignorant, and in their corruption will perish, |
2nd-Peter 2:13 | Receiving the reward of their injustice, counting for a pleasure the delights of a day: stains and spots, sporting themselves to excess, rioting in their feasts with you: | suffering wrong as the hire of wrong-doing; [men] that count it pleasure to revel in the day-time, spots and blemishes, revelling in their deceivings while they feast with you; | being doomed to receive a requital for their guilt. They reckon it pleasure to feast daintily in broad daylight. They are spots and blemishes, while feeding luxuriously at their love-feasts, and banqueting with you. |
2nd-Peter 2:14 | Having eyes full of adultery and of sin that ceaseth not: alluring unstable souls, having their heart exercised with covetousness, children of malediction: | having eyes full of adultery, and that cannot cease from sin; enticing unstedfast souls; having a heart exercised in covetousness; children of cursing; | Their very eyes are full of adultery being eyes which never cease from sin. These men set traps to catch unstedfast souls, their own hearts being well trained in greed. They are fore-doomed to God's curse! |
2nd-Peter 2:15 | Leaving the right way they have gone astray, having followed the way of Balaam of Bosor, who loved the wages of iniquity, | forsaking the right way, they went astray, having followed the way of Balaam the [son] of Beor, who loved the hire of wrong-doing; | Forsaking the straight road, they have gone astray, having eagerly followed in the steps of Balaam, the son of Beor, who was bent on securing the wages of unrighteousness. |
2nd-Peter 2:16 | But had a check of his madness, the dumb beast used to the yoke, which speaking with man's voice, forbade the folly of the prophet. | but he was rebuked for his own transgression: a dumb ass spake with man's voice and stayed the madness of the prophet. | But he was rebuked for his transgression: a dumb ass spoke with a human voice and checked the madness of the Prophet. |
2nd-Peter 2:17 | These are fountains without water, and clouds tossed with whirlwinds, to whom the mist of darkness is reserved. | These are springs without water, and mists driven by a storm; for whom the blackness of darkness hath been reserved. | These people are wells without water, mists driven along by a storm, men for whom the dense darkness has been reserved. |
2nd-Peter 2:18 | For, speaking proud words of vanity, they allure by the desires of fleshly riotousness, those who for a little while escape, such as converse in error: | For, uttering great swelling [words] of vanity, they entice in the lusts of the flesh, by lasciviousness, those who are just escaping from them that live in error; | For, while they pour out their frivolous and arrogant talk, they use earthly cravings every kind of immorality as a bait to entrap men who are just escaping from the influence of those who live in error. |
2nd-Peter 2:19 | Promising them liberty, whereas they themselves are the slaves of corruption. For by whom a man is overcome, of the same also he is the slave. | promising them liberty, while they themselves are bondservants of corruption; for of whom a man is overcome, of the same is he also brought into bondage. | And they promise them freedom, although they are themselves the slaves of what is corrupt. For a man is the slave of any one by whom he has been worsted in fight. |
2nd-Peter 2:20 | For if, flying from the pollutions of the world, through the knowledge of our Lord and Saviour Jesus Christ, they be again entangled in them and overcome: their latter state is become unto them worse than the former. | For if, after they have escaped the defilements of the world through the knowledge of the Lord and Saviour Jesus Christ, they are again entangled therein and overcome, the last state is become worse with them than the first. | For if, after escaping from the pollutions of the world through a full knowledge of our Lord and Saviour Jesus Christ, people are once more entangled in these pollutions and are overcome, their last state has become worse than their first. |
2nd-Peter 2:21 | For it had been better for them not to have known the way of justice, than after they have known it, to turn back from that holy commandment which was delivered to them. | For it were better for them not to have known the way of righteousness, than, after knowing it, to turn back from the holy commandment delivered unto them. | For it would have been better for them not to have fully known the way of righteousness, than, after knowing it, to turn back from the holy commandments in which they were instructed. |
2nd-Peter 2:22 | For, that of the true proverb has happened to them: The dog is returned to his vomit: and, The sow that was washed, to her wallowing in the mire. | It has happened unto them according to the true proverb, The dog turning to his own vomit again, and the sow that had washed to wallowing in the mire. | Their case is that described in the true proverb, "A dog returns to what he has vomited," and also in the other proverb, "The sow has washed itself and now goes back to roll in its filth." |
