John 5:1After these things was a festival day of the Jews, and Jesus went up to Jerusalem. After these things there was a feast of the Jews; and Jesus went up to Jerusalem. After this there was a Festival of the Jews, and Jesus went up to Jerusalem.
John 5:2Now there is at Jerusalem a pond, called Probatica, which in Hebrew is named Bethsaida, having five porches. Now there is in Jerusalem by the sheep [gate] a pool, which is called in Hebrew Bethesda, having five porches. Now there is in Jerusalem near the Sheep Gate a pool, called in Hebrew `Bethesda.' It has five arcades.
John 5:3In these lay a great multitude of sick, of blind, of lame, of withered; waiting for the moving of the water. In these lay a multitude of them that were sick, blind, halt, withered, [waiting for the moving of the water.] In these there used to lie a great number of sick persons, and of people who were blind or lame or paralyzed.
John 5:4And an angel of the Lord descended at certain times into the pond; and the water was moved. And he that went down first into the pond after the motion of the water, was made whole, of whatsoever infirmity he lay under.[for an angel of the Lord went down at certain seasons into the pool, and troubled the water: whosoever then first after the troubling of the waters stepped in was made whole, with whatsoever disease he was holden.] []
John 5:5And there was a certain man there, that had been eight and thirty years under his infirmity. And a certain man was there, who had been thirty and eight years in his infirmity. And there was one man there who had been an invalid for thirty-eight years.
John 5:6Him when Jesus had seen lying, and knew that he had been now a long time, he saith to him: Wilt thou be made whole? When Jesus saw him lying, and knew that he had been now a long time [in that case], he saith unto him, Wouldest thou be made whole? Jesus saw him lying there, and knowing that he had been a long time in that condition, He asked him, "Do you wish to have health and strength?"
John 5:7The infirm man answered him: Sir, I have no man, when the water is troubled, to put me into the pond. For whilst I am coming, another goeth down before me.The sick man answered him, Sir, I have no man, when the water is troubled, to put me into the pool: but while I am coming, another steppeth down before me. "Sir," replied the sufferer, "I have no one to put me into the pool when the water is moved; but while I am coming some one else steps down before me."
John 5:8Jesus saith to him: Arise, take up thy bed, and walk.Jesus saith unto him, Arise, take up thy bed, and walk. "Rise," said Jesus, "take up your mat and walk."
John 5:9And immediately the man was made whole: and he took up his bed, and walked. And it was the sabbath that day.And straightway the man was made whole, and took up his bed and walked. Now it was the sabbath on that day. Instantly the man was restored to perfect health, and he took up his mat and began to walk.
John 5:10The Jews therefore said to him that was healed: It is the sabbath; it is not lawful for thee to take up thy bed.So the Jews said unto him that was cured, It is the sabbath, and it is not lawful for thee to take up thy bed. That day was a Sabbath. So the Jews said to the man who had been cured, "It is the Sabbath: you must not carry your mat."
John 5:11He answered them: He that made me whole, he said to me, Take up thy bed, and walk. But he answered them, He that made me whole, the same said unto me, Take up thy bed, and walk. "He who cured me," he replied, "said to me, `Take up your mat and walk.'"
John 5:12They asked him therefore: Who is that man who said to thee, Take up thy bed, and walk? They asked him, Who is the man that said unto thee, Take up [thy bed], and walk? "Who is it," they asked, "that said to you, `Take up your mat and walk'?"
John 5:13But he who was healed, knew not who it was; for Jesus went aside from the multitude standing in the place. But he that was healed knew not who it was; for Jesus had conveyed himself away, a multitude being in the place. But the man who had been cured did not know who it was; for Jesus had passed out unnoticed, there being a crowd in the place.
John 5:14Afterwards, Jesus findeth him in the temple, and saith to him: Behold thou art made whole: sin no more, lest some worse thing happen to thee.Afterward Jesus findeth him in the temple, and said unto him, Behold, thou art made whole: sin no more, lest a worse thing befall thee. Afterwards Jesus found him in the Temple and said to him, "You are now restored to health. Do not sin any more, or a worse thing may befall you."
John 5:15The man went his way, and told the Jews, that it was Jesus who had made him whole.The man went away, and told the Jews that it was Jesus who had made him whole. The man went and told the Jews that it was Jesus who had restored him to health;
John 5:16Therefore did the Jews persecute Jesus, because he did these things on the sabbath. And for this cause the Jews persecuted Jesus, because he did these things on the sabbath. and on this account the Jews began to persecute Jesus because He did these things on the Sabbath.
John 5:17But Jesus answered them: My Father worketh until now; and I work. But Jesus answered them, My Father worketh even until now, and I work. His reply to their accusation was, "My Father works unceasingly, and so do I."
John 5:18Hereupon therefore the Jews sought the more to kill him, because he did not only break the sabbath, but also said God was his Father, making himself equal to God.For this cause therefore the Jews sought the more to kill him, because he not only brake the sabbath, but also called God his own Father, making himself equal with God. On this account then the Jews were all the more eager to put Him to death because He not only broke the Sabbath, but also spoke of God as being in a special sense His Father, thus putting Himself on a level with God.
John 5:19Then Jesus answered, and said to them: Amen, amen, I say unto you, the Son cannot do any thing of himself, but what he seeth the Father doing: for what things soever he doth, these the Son also doth in like manner.Jesus therefore answered and said unto them, Verily, verily, I say unto you, The Son can do nothing of himself, but what he seeth the Father doing: for what things soever he doeth, these the Son also doeth in like manner. "In most solemn truth I tell you," replied Jesus, "that the Son can do nothing of Himself He can only do what He sees the Father doing; for whatever He does, that the Son does in like manner.
John 5:20For the Father loveth the Son, and sheweth him all things which himself doth: and greater works than these will he shew him, that you may wonder. For the Father loveth the Son, and showeth him all things that himself doeth: and greater works than these will he show him, that ye may marvel. For the Father loves the Son and reveals to Him all that He Himself is doing. And greater deeds than these will He reveal to Him, in order that you may wonder.
John 5:21For as the Father raiseth up the dead, and giveth life: so the Son also giveth life to whom he will. For as the Father raiseth the dead and giveth them life, even so the Son also giveth life to whom he will. For just as the Father awakens the dead and gives them life, so the Son also gives life to whom He wills.
John 5:22For neither doth the Father judge any man, but hath given all judgment to the Son.For neither doth the Father judge any man, but he hath given all judgment unto the Son; The Father indeed does not judge any one, but He has entrusted all judgement to the Son,
John 5:23That all men may honour the Son, as they honour the Father. He who honoureth not the Son, honoureth not the Father, who hath sent him.that all may honor the Son, even as they honor the Father. He that honoreth not the Son honoreth not the Father that sent him. that all may honour the Son even as they honour the Father. The man who withholds honour from the Son withholds honour from the Father who sent Him.
John 5:24Amen, amen I say unto you, that he who heareth my word, and believeth him that sent me, hath life everlasting; and cometh not into judgment, but is passed from death to life.Verily, verily, I say unto you, He that heareth my word, and believeth him that sent me, hath eternal life, and cometh not into judgment, but hath passed out of death into life. "In most solemn truth I tell you that he who listens to my teaching and believes Him who sent me, has the Life of the Ages, and does not come under judgement, but has passed over out of death into Life.
John 5:25Amen, amen I say unto you, that the hour cometh, and now is, when the dead shall hear the voice of the Son of God, and they that hear shall live.Verily, verily, I say unto you, The hour cometh, and now is, when the dead shall hear the voice of the Son of God; and they that hear shall live. "In most solemn truth I tell you that a time is coming nay, has already come when the dead will hear the voice of the Son of God, and those who hear it will live.
John 5:26For as the Father hath life in himself, so he hath given the Son also to have life in himself:For as the Father hath life in himself, even so gave he to the Son also to have life in himself: For just as the Father has life in Himself, so He has also given to the Son to have life in Himself.
John 5:27And he hath given him power to do judgment, because he is the Son of man.and he gave him authority to execute judgment, because he is a son of man. And He has conferred on Him authority to act as Judge, because He is the Son of Man.
John 5:28Wonder not at this; for the hour cometh, wherein all that are in the graves shall hear the voice of the Son of God.Marvel not at this: for the hour cometh, in which all that are in the tombs shall hear his voice, Wonder not at this. For a time is coming when all who are in the graves will hear His voice and will come forth
John 5:29And they that have done good things, shall come forth unto the resurrection of life; but they that have done evil, unto the resurrection of judgment.and shall come forth; they that have done good, unto the resurrection of life; and they that have done evil, unto the resurrection of judgment. they who have done what is right to the resurrection of Life, and they whose actions have been evil to the resurrection of judgement.
John 5:30I cannot of myself do any thing. As I hear, so I judge: and my judgment is just; because I seek not my own will, but the will of him that sent me.I can of myself do nothing: as I hear, I judge: and my judgment is righteous; because I seek not mine own will, but the will of him that sent me. "I can of my own self do nothing. As I am bidden, so I judge; and mine is a just judgement, because it is not my own will that guides me, but the will of Him who sent me.
John 5:31If I bear witness of myself, my witness is not true.If I bear witness of myself, my witness is not true. "If I give testimony concerning myself, my testimony cannot be accepted.
John 5:32There is another that beareth witness of me; and I know that the witness which he witnesseth of me is true.It is another that beareth witness of me; and I know that the witness which he witnesseth of me is true. There is Another who gives testimony concerning me, and I know that the testimony is true which He offers concerning me.
John 5:33You sent to John, and he gave testimony to the truth.Ye have sent unto John, and he hath borne witness unto the truth. "You sent to John, and he both was and still is a witness to the truth.
John 5:34But I receive not testimony from man: but I say these things, that you may be saved. But the witness which I receive is not from man: howbeit I say these things, that ye may be saved. But the testimony on my behalf which I accept is not from man; though I say all this in order that you may be saved.
John 5:35He was a burning and a shining light: and you were willing for a time to rejoice in his light. He was the lamp that burneth and shineth; and ye were willing to rejoice for a season in his light. He was the lamp that burned and shone, and for a time you were willing to be gladdened by his light.
John 5:36But I have a greater testimony than that of John: for the works which the Father hath given me to perfect; the works themselves, which I do, give testimony of me, that the Father hath sent me.But the witness which I have is greater than [that of] John; for the works which the Father hath given me to accomplish, the very works that I do, bear witness of me, that the Father hath sent me. "But the testimony which I have is weightier than that of John; for the work the Father has assigned to me for me to bring it to completion the very work which I am doing affords testimony concerning me that the Father has sent me.
John 5:37And the Father himself who hath sent me, hath given testimony of me: neither have you heard his voice at any time, nor seen his shape. And the Father that sent me, he hath borne witness of me. Ye have neither heard his voice at any time, nor seen his form. And the Father who sent me, *He* has given testimony concerning me. None of you have ever either heard His voice or seen what He is like.
John 5:38And you have not his word abiding in you: for whom he hath sent, him you believe not.And ye have not his word abiding in you: for whom he sent, him ye believe not. Nor have you His word dwelling within you, for you refuse to believe Him whom *He* has sent.
John 5:39Search the scriptures, for you think in them to have life everlasting; and the same are they that give testimony of me.Ye search the scriptures, because ye think that in them ye have eternal life; and these are they which bear witness of me; "You search the Scriptures, because you suppose that in them you will find the Life of the Ages; and it is those Scriptures that yield testimony concerning me;
John 5:40And you will not come to me that you may have life.and ye will not come to me, that ye may have life. and yet you are unwilling to come to me that you may have Life.
John 5:41I receive glory not from men.I receive not glory from men. "I do not accept glory from man,
John 5:42But I know you, that you have not the love of God in you.But I know you, that ye have not the love of God in yourselves. but I know you well, and I know that in your hearts you do not really love God.
John 5:43I am come in the name of my Father, and you receive me not: if another shall come in his own name, him you will receive.I am come in my Father's name, and ye receive me not: if another shall come in his own name, him ye will receive. I have come as my Father's representative, and you do not receive me. If some one else comes representing only himself, him you will receive.
John 5:44How can you believe, who receive glory one from another: and the glory which is from God alone, you do not seek? How can ye believe, who receive glory one of another, and the glory that [cometh] from the only God ye seek not? How is it possible for you to believe, while you receive glory from one another and have no desire for the glory that comes from the only God?
John 5:45Think not that I will accuse you to the Father. There is one that accuseth you, Moses, in whom you trust.Think not that I will accuse you to the Father: there is one that accuseth you, [even] Moses, on whom ye have set your hope. "Do not suppose that I will accuse you to the Father. There is one who accuses you, namely Moses, on whom your hope rests.
John 5:46For if you did believe Moses, you would perhaps believe me also; for he wrote of me.For if ye believed Moses, ye would believe me; for he wrote of me. For if you believe Moses, you would believe me; for he wrote about me.
John 5:47But if you do not believe his writings, how will you believe my words? But if ye believe not his writings, how shall ye believe my words? But if you disbelieve his writings, how are you to believe my words?"
