Hebrews 5:1 | For every high priest taken from among men, is ordained for men in the things that appertain to God, that he may offer up gifts and sacrifices for sins: | For every high priest, being taken from among men, is appointed for men in things pertaining to God, that he may offer both gifts and sacrifices for sins: | For every high priest, being taken from among men, is appointed for men in things pertaining to God, that he may offer both gifts and sacrifices for sins. |
Hebrews 5:2 | Who can have compassion on them that are ignorant and that err: because he himself also is compassed with infirmity. | who can bear gently with the ignorant and erring, for that he himself also is compassed with infirmity; | The high priest can deal gently with those who are ignorant and going astray, because he himself is also surrounded with weakness. |
Hebrews 5:3 | And therefore he ought, as for the people, so also for himself, to offer for sins. | and by reason thereof is bound, as for the people, so also for himself, to offer for sins. | Because of this, he must offer sacrifices for sins for the people, as well as for himself. |
Hebrews 5:4 | Neither doth any man take the honour to himself, but he that is called by God, as Aaron was. | And no man taketh the honor unto himself, but when he is called of God, even as was Aaron. | No man takes this honor on himself, but he is called by God, just like Aaron was. |
Hebrews 5:5 | So Christ also did not glorify himself, that he might be made a high priest: but he that said unto him: Thou art my Son, this day have I begotten thee. | So Christ also glorified not himself to be made a high priest, but he that spake unto him, Thou art my Son, This day have I begotten thee: | So also Christ didn't glorify himself to be made a high priest, but he who said to him, "You are my Son. Today I have become your father." |
Hebrews 5:6 | As he saith also in another place: Thou art a priest for ever, according to the order of Melchisedech. | as he saith also in another [place,] Thou art a priest for ever After the order of Melchizedek. | As he says also in another place, "You are a priest forever, After the order of Melchizedek." |
Hebrews 5:7 | Who in the days of his flesh, with a strong cry and tears, offering up prayers and supplications to him that was able to save him from death, was heard for his reverence. | Who in the days of his flesh, having offered up prayers and supplications with strong crying and tears unto him that was able to save him from death, and having been heard for his godly fear, | Who in the days of his flesh, having offered up prayers and petitions with strong crying and tears to him who was able to save him from death, and having been heard for his godly fear, |
Hebrews 5:8 | And whereas indeed he was the Son of God, he learned obedience by the things which he suffered: | though he was a Son, yet learned obedience by the things which he suffered; | though he was a Son, yet learned obedience by the things which he suffered; |
Hebrews 5:9 | And being consummated, he became, to all that obey him, the cause of eternal salvation. | and having been made perfect, he became unto all them that obey him the author of eternal salvation; | and having been made perfect, he became to all of those who obey him the author of eternal salvation, |
Hebrews 5:10 | Called by God a high priest according to the order of Melchisedech. | named of God a high priest after the order of Melchizedek. | named by God a high priest after the order of Melchizedek. |
Hebrews 5:11 | Of whom we have much to say, and hard to be intelligibly uttered: because you are become weak to hear. | Of whom we have many things to say, and hard of interpretation, seeing ye are become dull of hearing. | Of whom we have many words to say, and hard to interpret, seeing you have become dull of hearing. |
Hebrews 5:12 | For whereas for the time you ought to be masters, you have need to be taught again what are the first elements of the words of God: and you are become such as have need of milk, and not of strong meat. | For when by reason of the time ye ought to be teachers, ye have need again that some one teach you the rudiments of the first principles of the oracles of God; and are become such as have need of milk, and not of solid food. | For when by reason of the time you ought to be teachers, you again need to have someone teach you the rudiments of the first principles of the oracles of God. You have come to need milk, and not solid food. |
Hebrews 5:13 | For every one that is a partaker of milk, is unskillful in the word of justice: for he is a little child. | For every one that partaketh of milk is without experience of the word of righteousness; for he is a babe. | For everyone who lives on milk is not experienced in the word of righteousness, for he is a baby. |
Hebrews 5:14 | But strong meat is for the perfect; for them who by custom have their senses exercised to the discerning of good and evil. | But solid food is for fullgrown men, [even] those who by reason of use have their senses exercised to discern good and evil. | But solid food is for full grown men, those who by reason of use have their senses exercised to discern good and evil. |
