James 3:1Be ye not many masters, my brethren, knowing that you receive the greater judgment.Be not many [of you] teachers, my brethren, knowing that we shall receive heavier judgment. Let not many of you be teachers, my brothers, knowing that we will receive heavier judgment.
James 3:2For in many things we all offend. If any man offend not in word, the same is a perfect man. He is able also with a bridle to lead about the whole body. For in many things we all stumble. If any stumbleth not in word, the same is a perfect man, able to bridle the whole body also. For in many things we all stumble. If anyone doesn't stumble in word, the same is a perfect man, able to bridle the whole body also.
James 3:3For if we put bits into the mouths of horses, that they may obey us, and we turn about their whole body. Now if we put the horses' bridles into their mouths that they may obey us, we turn about their whole body also. Indeed, we put bits into the horses' mouths so that they may obey us, and we turn about their whole body.
James 3:4Behold also ships, whereas they are great, and are driven by strong winds, yet are they turned about with a small helm, whithersoever the force of the governor willeth.Behold, the ships also, though they are so great and are driven by rough winds, are yet turned about by a very small rudder, whither the impulse of the steersman willeth. Behold, the ships also, though they are so big and are driven by fierce winds, are yet turned about by a very small rudder, wherever the pilot desires.
James 3:5Even so the tongue is indeed a little member, and boasteth great things. Behold how small a fire kindleth a great wood.So the tongue also is a little member, and boasteth great things. Behold, how much wood is kindled by how small a fire! So the tongue is also a little member, and boasts great things. Behold, how much wood is kindled by how small a fire!
James 3:6And the tongue is a fire, a world of iniquity. The tongue is placed among our members, which defileth the whole body, and inflameth the wheel of our nativity, being set on fire by hell. And the tongue is a fire: the world of iniquity among our members is the tongue, which defileth the whole body, and setteth on fire the wheel of nature, and is set on fire by hell. And the tongue is a fire. The world of iniquity among our members is the tongue, which defiles the whole body, and sets on fire the course of nature, and is set on fire by Gehenna.
James 3:7For every nature of beasts, and of birds, and of serpents, and of the rest, is tamed, and hath been tamed, by the nature of man:For every kind of beasts and birds, of creeping things and things in the sea, is tamed, and hath been tamed by mankind. For every kind of animal, bird, creeping thing, and thing in the sea, is tamed, and has been tamed by mankind.
James 3:8But the tongue no man can tame, an unquiet evil, full of deadly poison. But the tongue can no man tame; [it is] a restless evil, [it is] full of deadly poison. But nobody can tame the tongue. It is a restless evil, full of deadly poison.
James 3:9By it we bless God and the Father: and by it we curse men, who are made after the likeness of God.Therewith bless we the Lord and Father; and therewith curse we men, who are made after the likeness of God: With it we bless our God and Father, and with it we curse men, who are made in the image of God.
James 3:10Out of the same mouth proceedeth blessing and cursing. My brethren, these things ought not so to be.out of the same mouth cometh forth blessing and cursing. My brethren, these things ought not so to be. Out of the same mouth comes forth blessing and cursing. My brothers, these things ought not to be so.
James 3:11Doth a fountain send forth, out of the same hole, sweet and bitter water?Doth the fountain send forth from the same opening sweet [water] and bitter? Does a spring send forth from the same opening fresh and bitter water?
James 3:12Can the fig tree, my brethren, bear grapes; or the vine, figs? So neither can the salt water yield sweet. Can a fig tree, my brethren, yield olives, or a vine figs? Neither [can] salt water yield sweet. Can a fig tree, my brothers, yield olives, or a vine figs? Thus no spring yields both salt water and fresh water.
James 3:13Who is a wise man, and endued with knowledge among you? Let him shew, by a good conversation, his work in the meekness of wisdom.Who is wise and understanding among you? let him show by his good life his works in meekness of wisdom. Who is wise and understanding among you? Let him show his deeds done in gentleness of wisdom by his good life.
James 3:14But if you have bitter zeal, and there be contentions in your hearts; glory not, and be not liars against the truth. But if ye have bitter jealousy and faction in your heart, glory not and lie not against the truth. But if you have bitter jealousy and selfish ambition in your heart, don't boast and don't lie against the truth.
James 3:15For this is not wisdom, descending from above: but earthly, sensual, devilish. This wisdom is not [a wisdom] that cometh down from above, but is earthly, sensual, devilish. This wisdom is not that which comes down from above, but is earthly, sensual, and demonic.
James 3:16For where envying and contention is, there is inconstancy, and every evil work. For where jealousy and faction are, there is confusion and every vile deed. For where jealousy and selfish ambition are, there is confusion and every evil deed.
James 3:17But the wisdom, that is from above, first indeed is chaste, then peaceable, modest, easy to be persuaded, consenting to the good, full of mercy and good fruits, without judging, without dissimulation. But the wisdom that is from above is first pure, then peaceable, gentle, easy to be entreated, full of mercy and good fruits, without variance, without hypocrisy. But the wisdom that is from above is first pure, then peaceful, gentle, reasonable, full of mercy and good fruits, without partiality, and without hypocrisy.
James 3:18And the fruit of justice is sown in peace, to them that make peace. And the fruit of righteousness is sown in peace for them that make peace. Now the fruit of righteousness is sown in peace by those who make peace.
