Genesis 39:1And Joseph was brought into Egypt, and Putiphar an eunuch of Pharao, chief captain of the army, an Egyptian, bought him of the Ismaelites, by whom he was brought. Now Joseph was taken down to Egypt; and Potiphar the Egyptian, a captain of high position in Pharaoh's house, got him for a price from the Ishmaelites who had taken him there. And Joseph was brought down to Egypt; and Potiphar, an officer of Pharaoh's, the captain of the guard, an Egyptian, bought him of the hand of the Ishmaelites, that had brought him down thither.
Genesis 39:2And the Lord was with him, and he was a prosperous man in all things: and he dwelt in his master's house,And the Lord was with Joseph, and he did well; and he was living in the house of his master the Egyptian. And Jehovah was with Joseph, and he was a prosperous man; and he was in the house of his master the Egyptian.
Genesis 39:3Who knew very well that the Lord was with him, and made all that he did to prosper in his hand. And his master saw that the Lord was with him, making everything he did go well. And his master saw that Jehovah was with him, and that Jehovah made all that he did to prosper in his hand.
Genesis 39:4And Joseph found favour in the sight of his master, and ministered to him: and being set over all by him, he governed the house committed to him, and all things that were delivered to him:And having a high opinion of Joseph as his servant, he made him the overseer of his house and gave him control over all he had.And Joseph found favor in his sight, and he ministered unto him: and he made him overseer over his house, and all that he had he put into his hand.
Genesis 39:5And the Lord blessed the house of the Egyptian for Joseph's sake, and multiplied all his substance, both at home, and in the fields. And from the time when he made him overseer and gave him control of all his property, the blessing of the Lord was with the Egyptian, because of Joseph; the blessing of the Lord was on all he had, in the house and in the field. And it came to pass from the time that he made him overseer in his house, and over all that he had, that Jehovah blessed the Egyptian's house for Joseph's sake; and the blessing of Jehovah was upon all that he had, in the house and in the field.
Genesis 39:7h And after many days his mistress 'cast her eyes on Joseph, and said: Lie with me.And he gave Joseph control of all his property, keeping no account of anything, but only the food which was put before him. Now Joseph was very beautiful in form and face. And he left all that he had in Joseph's hand; and he knew not aught [that was] with him, save the bread which he did eat. And Joseph was comely, and well-favored.
Genesis 39:8But he, in no wise consenting to that wicked act, said to her: Behold, my master hath delivered all things to me, and knoweth not what he hath in his own house:And after a time, his master's wife, looking on Joseph with desire, said to him, Be my lover. And it came to pass after these things, that his master's wife cast her eyes upon Joseph; and she said, Lie with me.
Genesis 39:8Neither knew he any other thing, but the bread which he ate. And Joseph was of a beautiful countenance, and comely to behold. But he would not, and said to her, You see that my master keeps no account of what I do in his house, and has put all his property in my control; But he refused, and said unto his master's wife, Behold, my master knoweth not what is with me in the house, and he hath put all that he hath into my hand:
Genesis 39:9Neither is there any thing which is hot in my power, or that he hath not delivered to me, but thee, who art his wife : how then can I do this wicked thing, and I sin against my God?So that no one has more authority in this house than I have; he has kept nothing back from me but you, because you are his wife; how then may I do this great wrong, sinning against God?he is not greater in this house than I; neither hath he kept back anything from me but thee, because thou art his wife: how then can I do this great wickedness, and sin against God?
Genesis 39:10With such words as these day by day, both the woman was importunate with the young man, and he refused the adultery. And day after day she went on requesting Joseph to come to her and be her lover, but he would not give ear to her.And it came to pass, as she spake to Joseph day by day, that he hearkened not unto her, to lie by her, [or] to be with her.
Genesis 39:11Now it happened on it certain day, that Joseph went into the house, and was doing some business without any, man with him:Now one day he went into the house to do his work; and not one of the men of the house was inside. And it came to pass about this time, that he went into the house to do his work; and there was none of the men of the house there within.
Genesis 39:12And she catching the skirt of his garment, said: Lie with me. But he leaving the garment in her hand, fled, and went out.And pulling at his coat, she said, Come to my bed; but slipping out of his coat, he went running away. And she caught him by his garment, saying, Lie with me: and he left his garment in her hand, and fled, and got him out.
Genesis 39:13And when the woman saw the garment in her hands, and herself disregarded,And when she saw that he had got away, letting her keep his coat,And it came to pass, when she saw that he had left his garment in her hand, and was fled forth,
Genesis 39:14She called to her the men of her house, and said to them: See, he hath brought in a Hebrew, to abuse us: he came in to me, to lie with me : and when I cried out,She sent for the men of her house and said to them, See, he has let a Hebrew come here and make sport of us; he came to my bed, and I gave a loud cry;that she called unto the men of her house, and spake unto them, saying, See, he hath brought in a Hebrew unto us to mock us: he came in unto me to lie with me, and I cried with a loud voice:
Genesis 39:16And he heard my voice, he left the garment that I held, and got him out.And hearing it he went running out without his coat.and it came to pass, when he heard that I lifted up my voice and cried, that he left his garment by me, and fled, and got him out.
Genesis 39:16For a proof therefore of her fidelity, she kept the garment, and shewed it to her husband when he returned home:And she kept his coat by her, till his master came back. And she laid up his garment by her, until his master came home.
Genesis 39:17And said: The Hebrew servant, whom thou best brought, came to me to abuse me.Then she gave him the same story, saying, The Hebrew servant whom you have taken into our house came in to make sport of me;And she spake unto him according to these words, saying, The Hebrew servant, whom thou hast brought unto us, came in unto me to mock me:
Genesis 39:18And when he heard me cry, he left the garment which I held, and fled out.And when I gave a loud cry he went running out without his coat.and it came to pass, as I lifted up my voice and cried, that he left his garment by me, and fled out.
Genesis 39:19His master hearing these things, and giving too much credit to his wife's words, was very angry. And hearing his wife's account of what his servant had done, he became very angry. And it came to pass, when his master heard the words of his wife, which she spake unto him, saying, After this manner did thy servant to me; that his wrath was kindled.
Genesis 39:20And cast Joseph into the prison, where the king's prisoners were kept, and he was there shut up.And Joseph's master took him and put him in prison, in the place where the king's prisoners were kept in chains, and he was there in the prison-house.And Joseph's master took him, and put him into the prison, the place where the king's prisoners were bound: and he was there in the prison.
Genesis 39:21But the Lord was with Joseph and having mercy upon him gave him favour in the sight of the chief keeper of the prison:But the Lord was with Joseph, and was good to him, and made the keeper of the prison his friend. But Jehovah was with Joseph, and showed kindness unto him, and gave him favor in the sight of the keeper of the prison.
Genesis 39:22Who delivered into his hand all the prisoners that were kept in custody: and whatsoever was done was under him.And the keeper of the prison put all the prisoners under Joseph's control, and he was responsible for whatever was done there. And the keeper of the prison committed to Joseph's hand all the prisoners that were in the prison; and whatsoever they did there, he was the doer of it.
Genesis 39:23Neither did he himself know any thing, having committed all things to him: for the Lord was with him, and made all that he did to prosper. And the keeper of the prison gave no attention to anything which was under his care, because the Lord was with him; and the Lord made everything he did go well. The keeper of the prison looked not to anything that was under his hand, because Jehovah was with him; and that which he did, Jehovah made it prosper.
