1st-Peter 4:1 | Christ therefore having suffered in the flesh, be you also armed with the same thought: for he that hath suffered in the flesh, hath ceased from sins: | So that as Jesus was put to death in the flesh, do you yourselves be of the same mind; for the death of the flesh puts an end to sin; | Christ, then, having suffered for us in [the] flesh, do *ye* also arm yourselves with the same mind; for he that has suffered in [the] flesh has done with sin, |
1st-Peter 4:2 | That now he may live the rest of his time in the flesh , not after the desires of men, but according to the will of God. | So that you may give the rest of your lives in the flesh, not to the desires of men, but to the purpose of God. | no longer to live the rest of [his] time in [the] flesh to men's lusts, but to God's will. |
1st-Peter 4:3 | For the time past is sufficient to have fulfilled the will of the Gentiles, for them who have walked in riotousness, lusts, excess of wine, revellings, banquetings, and unlawful worshipping of idols. | Because for long enough, in times past, we have been living after the way of the Gentiles, given up to the desires of the flesh, to drinking and feasting and loose behaviour and unclean worship of images; | For the time past [is] sufficient [for us] to have wrought the will of the Gentiles, walking in lasciviousness, lusts, wine-drinking, revels, drinkings, and unhallowed idolatries. |
1st-Peter 4:4 | Wherein they think it strange, that you run not with them into the same confusion of riotousness, speaking evil of you. | And they are wondering that you no longer go with them in this violent wasting of life, and are saying evil things of you: | Wherein they think it strange that ye run not with [them] to the same sink of corruption, speaking injuriously [of you]; |
1st-Peter 4:5 | Who shall render account to him, who is ready to judge the living and the dead. | But they will have to give an account of themselves to him who is ready to be the judge of the living and the dead. | who shall render account to him who is ready to judge [the] living and [the] dead. |
1st-Peter 4:6 | For, for this cause was the gospel preached also to the dead: that they might be judged indeed according to men, in the flesh; but may live according to God, in the Spirit. | For this was the reason why the good news of Jesus was given even to the dead, so that they might be judged as men in the flesh, but might be living before God in the spirit. | For to this [end] were the glad tidings preached to [the] dead also, that they might be judged, as regards men, after [the] flesh, but live, as regards God, after [the] Spirit. |
1st-Peter 4:7 | But the end of all is at hand. Be prudent therefore, and watch in prayers. | But the end of all things is near: so be serious in your behaviour and keep on the watch with prayer; | But the end of all things is drawn nigh: be sober therefore, and be watchful unto prayers; |
1st-Peter 4:8 | But before all things have a constant mutual charity among yourselves: for charity covereth a multitude of sins. | And most of all be warm in your love for one another; because in love there is forgiveness for sins without number: | but before all things having fervent love among yourselves, because love covers a multitude of sins; |
1st-Peter 4:9 | Using hospitality one towards another, without murmuring, | Keep open house for all with a glad heart; | hospitable one to another, without murmuring; |
1st-Peter 4:10 | As every man hath received grace, ministering the same one to another: as good stewards of the manifold grace of God. | Making distribution among one another of whatever has been given to you, like true servants of the unmeasured grace of God; | each according as he has received a gift, ministering it to one another, as good stewards of [the] various grace of God. |
1st-Peter 4:11 | If any man speak, let him speak, as the words of God. If any man minister, let him do it, as of the power, which God administereth: that in all things God may be honoured through Jesus Christ: to whom is glory and empire for ever and ever. Amen. | If anyone has anything to say, let it be as the words of God; if anyone has the desire to be the servant of others, let him do it in the strength which is given by God; so that in all things God may have the glory through Jesus Christ, whose are the glory and the power for ever. | If any one speak as oracles of God; if any one minister as of strength which God supplies; that God in all things may be glorified through Jesus Christ, to whom is the glory and the might for the ages of ages. Amen. |
1st-Peter 4:12 | Dearly beloved, think not strange the burning heat which is to try you, as if some new thing happened to you; | Dear brothers, do not be surprised, as if it was something strange, if your faith is tested as by fire: | Beloved, take not [as] strange the fire [of persecution] which has taken place amongst you for [your] trial, as if a strange thing was happening to you; |
1st-Peter 4:13 | But if you partake of the sufferings of Christ, rejoice that when his glory shall be revealed, you may also be glad with exceeding joy. | But be glad that you are given a part in the pains of Christ; so that at the revelation of his glory you may have great joy. | but as ye have share in the sufferings of Christ, rejoice, that in the revelation of his glory also ye may rejoice with exultation. |
1st-Peter 4:14 | If you be reproached for the name of Christ, you shall be blessed: for that which is of the honour, glory, and power of God, and that which is his Spirit, resteth upon you. | If men say evil things of you because of the name of Christ, happy are you; for the Spirit of glory and of God is resting on you. | If ye are reproached in [the] name of Christ, blessed [are ye]; for the [Spirit] of glory and the Spirit of God rests upon you: [on their part he is blasphemed, but on your part he is glorified.] |
1st-Peter 4:15 | But let none of you suffer as a murderer, or a thief, or a railer, or a coveter of other men's things. | Let no one among you undergo punishment as a taker of life, or as a thief, or as an evil-doer, or as one who is over-interested in other men's business; | Let none of you suffer indeed as murderer, or thief, or evildoer, or as overseer of other people's matters; |
1st-Peter 4:16 | But if as a Christian, let him not be ashamed, but let him glorify God in that name. | But if he undergoes punishment as a Christian, that is no shame to him; let him give glory to God in this name. | but if as a christian, let him not be ashamed, but glorify God in this name. |
1st-Peter 4:17 | For the time is, that judgment should begin at the house of God. And if first at us, what shall be the end of them that believe not the gospel of God? | For the time has come for the judging, starting with the church of God; but if it makes a start with us, what will be the end of those who are not under the rule of God? | For the time of having the judgment begin from the house of God [is come]; but if first from us, what [shall be] the end of those who obey not the glad tidings of God? |
1st-Peter 4:18 | And if the just man shall scarcely be saved, where shall the ungodly and the sinner appear? | And if it is hard for even the good man to get salvation, what chance has the man without religion or the sinner? | And if the righteous is difficultly saved, where shall the impious and [the] sinner appear? |
1st-Peter 4:19 | Wherefore let them also that suffer according to the will of God, commend their souls in good deeds to the faithful Creator. | For this reason let those who by the purpose of God undergo punishment, keep on in well-doing and put their souls into the safe hands of their Maker. | Wherefore also let them who suffer according to the will of God commit their souls in well-doing to a faithful Creator. |
