Genesis 39:1 | And Joseph was brought into Egypt, and Putiphar an eunuch of Pharao, chief captain of the army, an Egyptian, bought him of the Ismaelites, by whom he was brought. | Now Joseph was taken down to Egypt; and Potiphar the Egyptian, a captain of high position in Pharaoh's house, got him for a price from the Ishmaelites who had taken him there. | And Joseph was brought down to Egypt; and Potiphar, a chamberlain of Pharaoh, the captain of the life-guard, an Egyptian, bought him of the hand of the Ishmaelites who had brought him down thither. |
Genesis 39:2 | And the Lord was with him, and he was a prosperous man in all things: and he dwelt in his master's house, | And the Lord was with Joseph, and he did well; and he was living in the house of his master the Egyptian. | And Jehovah was with Joseph, and he was a prosperous man; and he was in the house of his master the Egyptian. |
Genesis 39:3 | Who knew very well that the Lord was with him, and made all that he did to prosper in his hand. | And his master saw that the Lord was with him, making everything he did go well. | And his master saw that Jehovah was with him, and that Jehovah made all that he did to prosper in his hand. |
Genesis 39:4 | And Joseph found favour in the sight of his master, and ministered to him: and being set over all by him, he governed the house committed to him, and all things that were delivered to him: | And having a high opinion of Joseph as his servant, he made him the overseer of his house and gave him control over all he had. | And Joseph found favour in his eyes, and attended on him; and he set him over his house, and all that he had he gave into his hand. |
Genesis 39:5 | And the Lord blessed the house of the Egyptian for Joseph's sake, and multiplied all his substance, both at home, and in the fields. | And from the time when he made him overseer and gave him control of all his property, the blessing of the Lord was with the Egyptian, because of Joseph; the blessing of the Lord was on all he had, in the house and in the field. | And it came to pass from the time he had set him over his house and all that he had, that Jehovah blessed the Egyptian's house for Joseph's sake; and the blessing of Jehovah was on all that he had in the house and in the field. |
Genesis 39:7 | h And after many days his mistress 'cast her eyes on Joseph, and said: Lie with me. | And he gave Joseph control of all his property, keeping no account of anything, but only the food which was put before him. Now Joseph was very beautiful in form and face. | And he left all that he had in Joseph's hand, and took cognizance of nothing with him, save the bread that he ate. And Joseph was of a beautiful form and of a beautiful countenance. |
Genesis 39:8 | But he, in no wise consenting to that wicked act, said to her: Behold, my master hath delivered all things to me, and knoweth not what he hath in his own house: | And after a time, his master's wife, looking on Joseph with desire, said to him, Be my lover. | And it came to pass after these things, that his master's wife cast her eyes on Joseph, and said, Lie with me! |
Genesis 39:8 | Neither knew he any other thing, but the bread which he ate. And Joseph was of a beautiful countenance, and comely to behold. | But he would not, and said to her, You see that my master keeps no account of what I do in his house, and has put all his property in my control; | But he refused, and said to his master's wife, Behold, my master takes cognizance of nothing with me: what is in the house, and all that he has, he has given into my hand. |
Genesis 39:9 | Neither is there any thing which is hot in my power, or that he hath not delivered to me, but thee, who art his wife : how then can I do this wicked thing, and I sin against my God? | So that no one has more authority in this house than I have; he has kept nothing back from me but you, because you are his wife; how then may I do this great wrong, sinning against God? | There is none greater in this house than I; neither has he withheld anything from me but thee, because thou art his wife; and how should I do this great wickedness, and sin against God? |
Genesis 39:10 | With such words as these day by day, both the woman was importunate with the young man, and he refused the adultery. | And day after day she went on requesting Joseph to come to her and be her lover, but he would not give ear to her. | And it came to pass as she spoke to Joseph day by day and he hearkened not to her, to lie with her [and] to be with her, |
Genesis 39:11 | Now it happened on it certain day, that Joseph went into the house, and was doing some business without any, man with him: | Now one day he went into the house to do his work; and not one of the men of the house was inside. | that on a certain day he went into the house to do his business, and there was none of the men of the house there in the house. |
Genesis 39:12 | And she catching the skirt of his garment, said: Lie with me. But he leaving the garment in her hand, fled, and went out. | And pulling at his coat, she said, Come to my bed; but slipping out of his coat, he went running away. | Then she caught him by his garment, saying, Lie with me! But he left his garment in her hand, and fled and ran out. |
Genesis 39:13 | And when the woman saw the garment in her hands, and herself disregarded, | And when she saw that he had got away, letting her keep his coat, | And it came to pass, when she saw that he had left his garment in her hand and had fled forth, |
Genesis 39:14 | She called to her the men of her house, and said to them: See, he hath brought in a Hebrew, to abuse us: he came in to me, to lie with me : and when I cried out, | She sent for the men of her house and said to them, See, he has let a Hebrew come here and make sport of us; he came to my bed, and I gave a loud cry; | that she called to the men of her house, and spoke to them, saying, See, he has brought in a Hebrew man to us, to mock us: he came in to me, to lie with me; and I cried with a loud voice; |
Genesis 39:16 | And he heard my voice, he left the garment that I held, and got him out. | And hearing it he went running out without his coat. | and it came to pass when he heard that I lifted up my voice and cried, that he left his garment with me, and fled and went out. |
Genesis 39:16 | For a proof therefore of her fidelity, she kept the garment, and shewed it to her husband when he returned home: | And she kept his coat by her, till his master came back. | And she laid his garment by her until his lord came home. |
Genesis 39:17 | And said: The Hebrew servant, whom thou best brought, came to me to abuse me. | Then she gave him the same story, saying, The Hebrew servant whom you have taken into our house came in to make sport of me; | And she spoke to him according to these words, saying, The Hebrew bondman that thou hast brought to us came in to me to mock me; |
Genesis 39:18 | And when he heard me cry, he left the garment which I held, and fled out. | And when I gave a loud cry he went running out without his coat. | and it came to pass as I lifted up my voice and cried, that he left his garment with me, and fled forth. |
Genesis 39:19 | His master hearing these things, and giving too much credit to his wife's words, was very angry. | And hearing his wife's account of what his servant had done, he became very angry. | And it came to pass when his lord heard the words of his wife which she spoke to him, saying, After this manner did thy bondman to me, that his wrath was kindled. |
Genesis 39:20 | And cast Joseph into the prison, where the king's prisoners were kept, and he was there shut up. | And Joseph's master took him and put him in prison, in the place where the king's prisoners were kept in chains, and he was there in the prison-house. | And Joseph's lord took him and put him into the tower-house, [the] place where the king's prisoners were confined; and he was there in the tower-house. |
Genesis 39:21 | But the Lord was with Joseph and having mercy upon him gave him favour in the sight of the chief keeper of the prison: | But the Lord was with Joseph, and was good to him, and made the keeper of the prison his friend. | And Jehovah was with Joseph, and extended mercy to him, and gave him favour in the eyes of the chief of the tower-house. |
Genesis 39:22 | Who delivered into his hand all the prisoners that were kept in custody: and whatsoever was done was under him. | And the keeper of the prison put all the prisoners under Joseph's control, and he was responsible for whatever was done there. | And the chief of the tower-house committed to Joseph's hand all the prisoners that were in the tower-house; and whatever they had to do there he did. |
Genesis 39:23 | Neither did he himself know any thing, having committed all things to him: for the Lord was with him, and made all that he did to prosper. | And the keeper of the prison gave no attention to anything which was under his care, because the Lord was with him; and the Lord made everything he did go well. | The chief of the tower-house looked not to anything under his hand, because Jehovah was with him; and what he did, Jehovah made it prosper. |
