Genesis 33:1And Jacob lifting up his eyes, saw Esau coming, and with him four hundred men: and he divided the children of Lia, and of Rachel, and of the two handmaids:Then Jacob, lifting up his eyes, saw Esau coming with his four hundred men. So he made a division of the children between Leah and Rachel and the two women-servants.And Jacob lifted up his eyes, and looked, and, behold, Esau came, and with him four hundred men. And he divided the children to Leah, and to Rachel, and to the two handmaids.
Genesis 33:2And he put both the handmaids and their children foremost: and Lia and her children in the second place: and Rachel and Joseph last.He put the servants and their children in front, Leah and her children after them, and Rachel and Joseph at the back. And he put the handmaids and their children foremost, and Leah and her children after, and Rachel and Joseph hindermost.
Genesis 33:3And he went forward and bowed down with his face to the ground seven times until his brother came near. And he himself, going before them, went down on his face to the earth seven times till he came near his brother. And he passed on before them, and bowed himself to the ground seven times, till he came near to his brother.
Genesis 33:4Then Esau ran to meet his brother, and embraced him: and clasping him fast about the neck, and kissing him, wept. Then Esau came running up to him, and folding him in his arms, gave him a kiss: and the two of them were overcome with weeping. And Esau ran to meet him, and embraced him, and fell on his neck, and kissed him: and they wept.
Genesis 33:5And lifting up his eyes, he saw the women and their children, and said: What mean these? And do they belong to thee? He answered: They are the children which God hath given to me thy servant. Then Esau, lifting up his eyes, saw the women and the children, and said, Who are these with you? And he said, The children whom God in his mercy has given to your servant. And he lifted up his eyes, and saw the women and the children, and said, Who are those with thee? And he said, The children which God hath graciously given to thy servant.
Genesis 33:6Then the handmaids and their children came near, and bowed themselves. Then the servants and their children came near, and went down on their faces. Then the handmaidens came near, they and their children, and they bowed themselves.
Genesis 33:7Lia also with her children came near, and bowed down in like manner, and last of all Joseph and Rachel bowed down. And Leah came near with her children, and then Joseph and Rachel, and they did the same. And Leah also with her children came near, and bowed themselves; and after came Joseph near and Rachel, and they bowed themselves.
Genesis 33:8And Esau said: What are the droves that I met? He answered: That I might find favor before my lord. And he said, What were all those herds which I saw on the way? And Jacob said, They were an offering so that I might have grace in my lord's eyes. And he said, What meanest thou by all this drove which I met? And he said, these are to find grace in the sight of my lord.
Genesis 33:9But he said: I have plenty, my brother, keep what is thine for thyself. But Esau said, I have enough; keep what is yours, my brother, for yourself. And Esau said, I have enough, my brother; keep what thou hast to thyself.
Genesis 33:10And Jacob said: Do not so I beseech thee, but if I have found favor in thy eyes, receive a little present at my hands: for I have seen thy face, as if I should have seen the countenance of God: be gracious to me,And Jacob said, Not so; but if I have grace in your eyes, take them as a sign of my love, for I have seen your face as one may see the face of God, and you have been pleased with me.And Jacob said, Nay, I pray thee, if now I have found grace in thy sight, then receive my present at my hand: for therefore I have seen thy face, as though I had seen the face of God, and thou hast been pleased with me.
Genesis 33:11And take the blessing, which I have brought thee, and which God hath given me, who giveth all things. He took it with much ado at his brother's earnest pressing him,Take my offering then, with my blessing; for God has been very good to me and I have enough: so at his strong request, he took it.Take, I pray thee, my blessing that is brought to thee; because God hath dealt graciously with me, and because I have enough: and he urged him, and he took it.
Genesis 33:12And said: Let us go on together, and I will accompany thee in thy journey. And he said, Let us go on our journey together, and I will go in front. And he said, Let us take our journey, and let us go, and I will go before thee.
Genesis 33:13And Jacob said: My lord, thou knowest that I have with me tender children, and sheep, and kine with young: which if I should cause to be overdriven, in one day all the flocks will die.But Jacob said, My lord may see that the children are only small, and there are young ones in my flocks and herds: one day's over-driving will be the destruction of all the flock. And he said to him, My lord knoweth that the children are tender, and the flocks and herds with young are with me, and if men should over-drive them one day, all the flock will die.
Genesis 33:14May it please my lord to go before his servant: and I will follow softly after him, as I shall see my children to be able, until I come to my lord in Seir.Do you, my lord, go on before your servant; I will come on slowly, at the rate at which the cattle and the children are able to go, till I come to my lord at Seir.Let my lord, I pray thee, pass over before his servant: and I will lead on slowly, according as the cattle that go before me, and the children are able to endure; until I come to my lord to Seir.
Genesis 33:15Esau answered: I beseech thee, that some of the people at least, who are with me, may stay to accompany thee in the way. And he said: There is no necessity: I want nothing else but only to find favor, my lord, in thy sight. And Esau said, Then keep some of my men with you. And he said, What need is there for that, if my lord is pleased with me?And Esau said, Let me now leave with thee some of the people that are with me: And he said, What needeth it? Let me find grace in the sight of my lord.
Genesis 33:16So Esau returned, that day, the way that he came, to Seir.So Esau, turning back that day, went on his way to Seir.So Esau returned that day on his way to Seir.
Genesis 33:17And Jacob came to Socoth: where having built a house, and pitched tents, he called the name of the place Socoth, that is, Tents. And Jacob went on to Succoth, where he made a house for himself and put up tents for his cattle: for this reason the place was named Succoth. And Jacob journeyed to Succoth, and built him a house, and made booths for his cattle: therefore the name of the place is called Succoth.
Genesis 33:18And he passed over to Salem, a city of the Sichemites, which is in the land of Chanaan, after he returned from Mesopotamia of Syria: and he dwelt by the town:So Jacob came safely from Paddan-aram to the town of Shechem in the land of Canaan, and put up his tents near the town. And Jacob came to Shalem, a city of Shechem, which is in the land of Canaan, when he came from Padan-aram; and pitched his tent before the city.
Genesis 33:19And he bought that part of the field, in which he pitched his tents, of the children of Hemor, the father of Sichem for a hundred lambs. And for a hundred bits of money he got from the children of Hamor, the builder of Shechem, the field in which he had put up his tents. And he bought a part of a field, where he had spread his tent, at the hand of the children of Hamor, Shechem's father, for a hundred pieces of money.
Genesis 33:20And raising an altar there, he invoked upon it the most mighty God of Israel. And there he put up an altar, naming it El, the God of Israel. And he erected there an altar, and called it El-elohe-Israel.
