1st-Peter 5:1 | The ancients therefore that are among you, I beseech, who am myself also an ancient, and a witness of the sufferings of Christ: as also a partaker of that glory which is to be revealed in time to come: | I who am myself one of the rulers of the church, and a witness of the death of Christ, having my part in the coming glory, send this serious request to the chief men among you: | So I exhort the Elders among you I who am their fellow Elder and have been an eye-witness of the sufferings of the Christ, and am also a sharer in the glory which is soon to be revealed. |
1st-Peter 5:2 | Feed the flock of God which is among you, taking care of it, not by constraint, but willingly, according to God: not for filthy lucre's sake, but voluntarily: | Keep watch over the flock of God which is in your care, using your authority, not as forced to do so, but gladly; and not for unclean profit but with a ready mind; | Be shepherds of God's flock which is among you. Exercise the oversight not reluctantly but eagerly, in accordance with the will of God; not for base gain but with cheerful minds; |
1st-Peter 5:3 | Neither as lording it over the clergy, but being made a pattern of the flock from the heart. | Not as lords over God's heritage, but making yourselves examples to the flock. | not lording it over your Churches but proving yourselves patterns for the flock to imitate. |
1st-Peter 5:4 | And when the prince of pastors shall appear, you shall receive a never fading crown of glory. | And at the coming of the chief Keeper of the sheep, you will be given the eternal crown of glory. | And then, when the chief Shepherd appears, you will receive the never-withering wreath of glory. |
1st-Peter 5:5 | In like manner, ye young men, be subject to the ancients. And do you all insinuate humility one to another, for God resisteth the proud, but to the humble he giveth grace. | And in the same way, let the younger men be ruled by the older ones. Let all of you put away pride and make yourselves ready to be servants: for God is a hater of pride, but he gives grace to those who make themselves low. | In the same way you younger men must submit to your elders; and all of you must gird yourselves with humility towards one another, for God sets Himself against the proud, but gives grace to the humble. |
1st-Peter 5:6 | Be you humbled therefore under the mighty hand of God, that he may exalt you in the time of visitation: | For this cause make yourselves low under the strong hand of God, so that when the time comes you may be lifted up; | Humble yourselves therefore beneath the mighty hand of God, so that at the right time He may set you on high. |
1st-Peter 5:7 | Casting all your care upon him, for he hath care of you. | Putting all your troubles on him, for he takes care of you. | Throw the whole of your anxiety upon Him, because He Himself cares for you. |
1st-Peter 5:8 | Be sober and watch: because your adversary the devil, as a roaring lion, goeth about seeking whom he may devour. | Be serious and keep watch; the Evil One, who is against you, goes about like a lion with open mouth in search of food; | Curb every passion, and be on the alert. Your great accuser, the Devil, is going about like a roaring lion to see whom he can devour. |
1st-Peter 5:9 | Whom resist ye, strong in faith: knowing that the same affliction befalls your brethren who are in the world. | Do not give way to him but be strong in your faith, in the knowledge that your brothers who are in the world undergo the same troubles. | Withstand him, firm in your faith; knowing that your brethren in other parts of the world are passing through just the same experiences. |
1st-Peter 5:10 | But the God of all grace, who hath called us into his eternal glory in Christ Jesus, after you have suffered a little, will himself perfect you, and confirm you, and establish you. | And after you have undergone pain for a little time, the God of all grace who has given you a part in his eternal glory through Christ Jesus, will himself give you strength and support, and make you complete in every good thing; | And God, the giver of all grace, who has called you to share His eternal glory, through Christ, after you have suffered for a short time, will Himself make you perfect, firm, and strong. |
1st-Peter 5:11 | To him be glory and empire for ever and ever. Amen. | His is the power for ever. So be it. | To Him be all power unto the Ages of the Ages! Amen. |
1st-Peter 5:12 | By Sylvanus, a faithful brother unto you, as I think, I have written briefly: beseeching and testifying that this is the true grace of God, wherein you stand. | I have sent you this short letter by Silvanus, a true brother, in my opinion; comforting you and witnessing that this is the true grace of God; keep to it. | I send this short letter by Silas, our faithful brother for such I regard him in order to encourage you, and to bear witness that what I have told you is the true grace of God. In it stand fast. |
1st-Peter 5:13 | The church that is in Babylon, elected together with you, saluteth you: and so doth my son Mark. | She who is in Babylon, who has a part with you in the purpose of God, sends you her love; and so does my son Mark. | The Church in Babylon, chosen like yourselves by God, sends greetings, and so does Mark my son. |
1st-Peter 5:14 | Salute one another with a holy kiss. Grace be to all you, who are in Christ Jesus. Amen. | Give one another the kiss of love. Peace be to you all in Christ. | Greet one another with a kiss of love. Peace be with all of you who are in Christ. |
