2nd-Peter 1:1 | Simon Peter, servant and apostle of Jesus Christ, to them that have obtained equal faith with us in the justice of our God and Saviour Jesus Christ. | Simon Peter, a servant and Apostle of Jesus Christ, to those who with us have a part in the same holy faith in the righteousness of our God and Saviour Jesus Christ: | Simon Peter, a bondservant and Apostle of Jesus Christ: To those to whom there has been allotted the same precious faith as that which is ours through the righteousness of our God and of our Saviour Jesus Christ. |
2nd-Peter 1:2 | Grace to you and peace be accomplished in the knowledge of God and of Christ Jesus our Lord: | May grace and peace ever be increasing in you, in the knowledge of God and of Jesus our Lord; | May more and more grace and peace be granted to you in a full knowledge of God and of Jesus our Lord, |
2nd-Peter 1:3 | As all things of his divine power which appertain to life and godliness, are given us, through the knowledge of him who hath called us by his own proper glory and virtue. | Because by his power he has given us everything necessary for life and righteousness, through the knowledge of him who has been our guide by his glory and virtue; | seeing that His divine power has given us all things that are needful for life and godliness, through our knowledge of Him who has appealed to us by His own glorious perfections. |
2nd-Peter 1:4 | By whom he hath given us most great and precious promises: that by these you may be made partakers of the divine nature: flying the corruption of that concupiscence which is in the world. | And through this he has given us the hope of great rewards highly to be valued; so that by them we might have our part in God's being, and be made free from the destruction which is in the world through the desires of the flesh. | It is by means of these that He has granted us His precious and wondrous promises, in order that through them you may, one and all, become sharers in the very nature of God, having completely escaped the corruption which exists in the world through earthly cravings. |
2nd-Peter 1:5 | And you, employing all care, minister in your faith, virtue; and in virtue, knowledge; | So, for this very cause, take every care; joining virtue to faith, and knowledge to virtue, | But for this very reason adding, on your part, all earnestness along with your faith, manifest also a noble character: along with a noble character, knowledge; |
2nd-Peter 1:6 | And in knowledge, abstinence; and in abstinence, patience; and in patience, godliness; | And self-control to knowledge, and a quiet mind to self-control, and fear of God to a quiet mind, | along with knowledge, self-control; along with self-control, power of endurance; |
2nd-Peter 1:7 | And in godliness, love of brotherhood; and in love of brotherhood, charity. | And love of the brothers to fear of God, and to love of the brothers, love itself. | along with power of endurance, godliness; along with godliness, brotherly affection; and along with brotherly affection, love. |
2nd-Peter 1:8 | For if these things be with you and abound, they will make you to be neither empty nor unfruitful in the knowledge of our Lord Jesus Christ. | For if you have these things in good measure, they will make you fertile and full of fruit in the knowledge of our Lord Jesus Christ. | If these things exist in you, and continually increase, they prevent your being either idle or unfruitful in advancing towards a full knowledge of our Lord Jesus Christ. |
2nd-Peter 1:9 | For he that hath not these things with him, is blind, and groping, having forgotten that he was purged from his old sins. | For the man who has not these things is blind, seeing only what is near, having no memory of how he was made clean from his old sins. | For the man in whom they are lacking is blind and cannot see distant objects, in that he has forgotten that he has been cleansed from his old sins. |
2nd-Peter 1:10 | Wherefore, brethren, labour the more, that by good works you may make sure your calling and election. For doing these things, you shall not sin at any time. | For this reason, my brothers, take all the more care to make your selection and approval certain; for if you do these things you will never have a fall: | For this reason, brethren, be all the more in earnest to make sure that God has called you and chosen you; for it is certain that so long as you practise these things, you will never stumble. |
2nd-Peter 1:11 | For so an entrance shall be ministered to you abundantly into the everlasting kingdom of our Lord and Saviour Jesus Christ. | For so the way will be open to you into the eternal kingdom of our Lord and Saviour Jesus Christ. | And so a triumphant admission into the eternal Kingdom of our Lord and Saviour Jesus Christ will be freely granted to you. |
2nd-Peter 1:12 | For which cause I will begin to put you always in remembrance of these things: though indeed you know them, and are confirmed in the present truth. | For this reason I will be ready at all times to keep your memory of these things awake, though you have the knowledge of them now and are well based in your present faith. | For this reason I shall always persist in reminding you of these things, although you know them and are stedfast believers in truth which you already possess. |
2nd-Peter 1:13 | But I think it meet as long as I am in this tabernacle, to stir you up by putting you in remembrance. | And it seems right to me, as long as I am in this tent of flesh, to keep your minds awake by working on your memory; | But I think it right, so long as I remain in the body, my present dwelling-place, to arouse you by such reminders. |
2nd-Peter 1:14 | Being assured that the laying away of this my tabernacle is at hand, according as our Lord Jesus Christ also hath signified to me. | For I am conscious that in a short time I will have to put off this tent of flesh, as our Lord Jesus Christ has made clear to me. | For I know that the time for me to lay aside my body is now rapidly drawing near, even as our Lord Jesus Christ has revealed to me. |
2nd-Peter 1:15 | And I will endeavour, that you frequently have after my decease, whereby you may keep a memory of these things. | And I will take every care so that you may have a clear memory of these things after my death. | So on every possible occasion I will also do my best to enable you to recall these things after my departure. |
2nd-Peter 1:16 | For we have not by following artificial fables, made known to you the power, and presence of our Lord Jesus Christ; but we were eyewitnesses of his greatness. | For when we gave you news of the power and the coming of our Lord Jesus Christ, our teaching was not based on stories put together by art, but we were eye-witnesses of his glory. | For when we made known to you the power and Coming of our Lord Jesus Christ, we were not eagerly following cleverly devised legends, but we had been eye-witnesses of His majesty. |
2nd-Peter 1:17 | For he received from God the Father, honour and glory: this voice coming down to him from the excellent glory: This is my beloved Son, in whom I am well pleased; hear ye him. | For God the Father gave him honour and glory, when such a voice came to him out of the great glory, saying, This is my dearly loved Son, with whom I am well pleased. | He received honour and glory from God the Father, and out of the wondrous glory words such as these were spoken to Him, "This is My dearly-loved Son, in whom I take delight." |
2nd-Peter 1:18 | And this voice we heard brought from heaven, when we were with him in the holy mount. | And this voice came from heaven even to our ears, when we were with him on the holy mountain. | And we ourselves heard these words come from Heaven, when we were with Him on the holy mountain. |
2nd-Peter 1:19 | And we have the more firm prophetical word: whereunto you do well to attend, as to a light that shineth in a dark place, until the day dawn, and the day star arise in your hearts: | And so the words of the prophets are made more certain; and it is well for you to give attention to them as to a light shining in a dark place, till the dawn comes and the morning star is seen in your hearts; | And in the written word of prophecy we have something more permanent; to which you do well to pay attention as to a lamp shining in a dimly-lighted place until day dawns and the morning star rises in your hearts. |
2nd-Peter 1:20 | Understanding this first, that no prophecy of scripture is made by private interpretation. | Being conscious in the first place that no man by himself may give a special sense to the words of the prophets. | But, above all, remember that no prophecy in Scripture will be found to have come from the prophet's own prompting; |
2nd-Peter 1:21 | For prophecy came not by the will of man at any time: but the holy men of God spoke, inspired by the Holy Ghost. | For these words did not ever come through the impulse of men: but the prophets had them from God, being moved by the Holy Spirit. | for never did any prophecy come by human will, but men sent by God spoke as they were impelled by the Holy Spirit. |
