Acts 9:1 | And Saul, as yet breathing out threatenings and slaughter against the disciples of the Lord, went to the high priest, | But Saul, still burning with desire to put to death the disciples of the Lord, went to the high priest, | Now Saul, whose every breath was a threat of destruction for the disciples of the Lord, |
Acts 9:2 | And asked of him letters to Damascus, to the synagogues: that if he found any men and wemen of this way, he might bring them bound to Jerusalem. | And made a request for letters from him to the Synagogues of Damascus, so that if there were any of the Way there, men or women, he might take them as prisoners to Jerusalem. | went to the High Priest and begged from him letters addressed to the synagogues in Damascus, in order that if he found any believers there, either men or women, he might bring them in chains to Jerusalem. |
Acts 9:3 | And as he went on his journey, it came to pass that he drew nigh to Damascus; and suddenly a light from heaven shined round about him. | And while he was journeying, he came near Damascus; and suddenly he saw a light from heaven shining round him; | But on the journey, as he was getting near Damascus, suddenly there flashed round him a light from Heaven; |
Acts 9:4 | And falling on the ground, he heard a voice saying to him: Saul, Saul, why persecutest thou me? | And he went down on the earth, and a voice said to him, Saul, Saul, why are you attacking me so cruelly? | and falling to the ground he heard a voice which said to him, "Saul, Saul, why are you persecuting Me?" |
Acts 9:5 | Who said: Who art thou, Lord? And he: I am Jesus whom thou persecutest. It is hard for thee to kick against the goad. | And he said, Who are you, Lord? And he said, I am Jesus, whom you are attacking: | "Who art thou, Lord?" he asked. "I am Jesus, whom you are persecuting," was the reply. |
Acts 9:6 | And he trembling and astonished, said: Lord, what wilt thou have me to do? | But get up, and go into the town, and it will be made clear to you what you have to do. | "But rise and go to the city, and you will be told what you are to do. |
Acts 9:7 | And the Lord said to him: Arise, and go into the city, and there it shall be told thee what thou must do. Now the men who went in company with him, stood amazed, hearing indeed a voice, but seeing no man. | And the men who were with him were not able to say anything; hearing the voice, but seeing no one. | Meanwhile the men who travelled with Saul were standing dumb with amazement, hearing a sound, but seeing no one. |
Acts 9:8 | And Saul arose from the ground; and when his eyes were opened, he saw nothing. But they leading him by the hands, brought him to Damascus. | And Saul got up from the earth, and when his eyes were open, he saw nothing; and he was guided by the hand into Damascus. | Then he rose from the ground, but when he had opened his eyes, he could not see, and they led him by the arm and brought him to Damascus. |
Acts 9:9 | And he was there three days, without sight, and he did neither eat nor drink. | And for three days he was not able to see, and he took no food or drink. | And for two days he remained without sight, and did not eat or drink anything. |
Acts 9:10 | Now there was a certain disciple at Damascus, named Ananias. And the Lord said to him in a vision: Ananias. And he said: Behold I am here, Lord. | Now there was a certain disciple at Damascus, named Ananias; and the Lord said to him in a vision, Ananias! and he said, Here I am, Lord. | Now in Damascus there was a disciple of the name of Ananias. Acts 9:11 | And the Lord said to him: Arise, and go into the street that is called Stait, and seek in the house of Judas, one named Saul of Tarsus. For behold he prayeth. | And the Lord said to him, Get up, and go to the street which is named Straight, and make search at the house of Judas for one named Saul of Tarsus: for he is at prayer; | "Rise," said the Lord, "and go to Straight Street, and inquire at the house of Judas for a man called Saul, from Tarsus, for he is actually praying. |
Acts 9:12 | (And he saw a man named Ananias coming in, and putting his hands upon him, that he might receive his sight.) | And he has seen a man named Ananias coming in and putting his hands on him, so that he may be able to see. | He has seen a man called Ananias come and lay his hands upon him so that he may recover his sight." |
Acts 9:13 | But Ananias answered: Lord, I have heard by many of this man, how much evil he hath done to thy saints in Jerusalem. | But Ananias said, Lord, I have had accounts of this man from a number of people, how much evil he has done to your saints at Jerusalem: | "Lord," answered Ananias, "I have heard about that man from many, and I have heard of the great mischief he has done to Thy people in Jerusalem; |
Acts 9:14 | And here he hath authority from the chief priests to bind all that invoke thy name. | And here he has authority from the chief priests to make prisoners all who give worship to your name. | and here he is authorized by the High Priests to arrest all who call upon Thy name." |
Acts 9:15 | And the Lord said to him: Go thy way; for this man is to me a vessel of election, to carry my name before the Gentiles, and kings, and the children of Israel. | But the Lord said, Go without fear: for he is a special vessel for me, to give to the Gentiles and kings and to the children of Israel the knowledge of my name: | "Go," replied the Lord; "he is a chosen instrument of Mine to carry My name to the Gentiles and to kings and to the descendants of Israel. |
Acts 9:16 | For I will shew him how great things he must suffer for my name's sake. | For I will make clear to him what troubles he will have to undergo for me. | For I will let him know the great sufferings which he must pass through for My sake." |
Acts 9:17 | And Ananias went his way, and entered into the house. And laying his hands upon him, he said: Brother Saul, the Lord Jesus hath sent me, he that appeared to thee in the way as thou camest; that thou mayest receive thy sight, and be filled with the Holy Ghost. | And Ananias went out and came to the house, and putting his hands on him, said, Brother Saul, the Lord Jesus, whom you saw when you were on your journey, has sent me, so that you may be able to see, and be full of the Holy Spirit. | So Ananias went and entered the house; and, laying his two hands upon Saul, said, "Saul, brother, the Lord even Jesus who appeared to you on your journey has sent me, that you may recover your sight and be filled with the Holy Spirit." |
Acts 9:18 | And immediately there fell from his eyes as it were scales, and he received his sight; and rising up, he was baptized. | And straight away it seemed as if a veil was taken from his eyes, and he was able to see; and he got up, and had baptism; | Instantly there dropped from his eyes what seemed to be scales, and he could see once more. Upon this he rose and received baptism; |
Acts 9:19 | And when he had taken meat, he was strengthened. And he was with the disciples that were at Damascus, for some days. | And when he had taken food his strength came back. And for some days he kept with the disciples who were in Damascus. | after which he took food and regained his strength. Then he remained some little time with the disciples in Damascus. |
Acts 9:20 | And immediately he preached Jesus in the synagogues, that he is the Son of God. | And straight away, in the Synagogues, he was preaching Jesus as the Son of God. | And in the synagogues he began at once to proclaim Jesus as the Son of God; |
Acts 9:21 | And all that heard him, were astonished, and said: Is not this he who persecuted in Jerusalem those that called upon this name: and came hither for that intent, that he might carry them bound to the chief priests? | And all those hearing him were full of wonder and said, Is not this the man who in Jerusalem was attacking all the worshippers of this name? and he had come here so that he might take them as prisoners before the chief priests. | and his hearers were all amazed, and began to ask one another, "Is not this the man who in Jerusalem tried to exterminate those who called upon that Name, and came here on purpose to carry them off in chains to the High Priests?" |
Acts 9:22 | But Saul increased much more in strength, and confounded the Jews who dwelt at Damascus, affirming that this is the Christ. | But Saul went on increasing in power, and the Jews in Damascus were not able to give answers to the arguments by which he made it clear that Jesus was the Christ. | Saul, however, gained more and more influence, and as for the Jews living in Damascus, he bewildered them with his proofs that Jesus is the Christ. |
Acts 9:23 | And when many days were passed, the Jews consulted together to kill him. | Then, after some days, the Jews made an agreement together to put him to death: | At length the Jews plotted to kill Saul; |
Acts 9:24 | But their laying in wait was made known to Saul. And they watched the gates also day and night, that they might kill him. | But Saul got knowledge of their design. And they kept watch day and night on the roads out of the town, so that they might put him to death: | but information of their intention was given to him. They even watched the gates, day and night, in order to murder him; |
Acts 9:25 | But the disciples taking him in the night, conveyed him away by the wall, letting him down in a basket. | But his disciples took him by night and let him down from the wall in a basket. | but his disciples took him by night and let him down through the wall, lowering him in a hamper. |
Acts 9:26 | And when he was come into Jerusalem, he essayed to join himself to the disciples; and they all were afraid of him, not believing that he was a disciple. | And when he came to Jerusalem, he made an attempt to be joined to the disciples, but they were all in fear of him, not taking him for a disciple. | So he came to Jerusalem and made several attempts to associate with the disciples, but they were all afraid of him, being in doubt as to whether he himself was a disciple. |
Acts 9:27 | But Barnabas took him, and brought him to the apostles, and told them how he had seen the Lord, and that he had spoken to him; and how in Damascus he had dealt confidently in the name of Jesus. | But Barnabas took him to the Apostles and gave them an account of how he had seen the Lord on the road, and had given hearing to his words, and how at Damascus he had been preaching in the name of Jesus without fear. | Barnabas, however, came to his assistance. He brought Saul to the Apostles, and related to them how, on his journey, he had seen the Lord, and that the Lord had spoken to him, and how in Damascus he had fearlessly taught in the name of Jesus. |
Acts 9:28 | And he was with them coming in and going out in Jerusalem, and dealing confidently in the name of the Lord. | And he was with them, going in and out at Jerusalem, | Henceforth Saul was one of them, going in and out of the city, |
Acts 9:29 | He spoke also to the Gentiles, and disputed with the Greeks; but they sought to kill him. | Preaching in the name of the Lord without fear; and he had discussions with the Greek Jews; but they were working for his death. | and speaking fearlessly in the name of the Lord. And he often talked with the Hellenists and had discussions with them. |
Acts 9:30 | Which when the brethren had known, they brought him down to Caesarea, and sent him away to Tarsus. | And when the brothers had knowledge of it, they took him to Caesarea and sent him to Tarsus. | But they kept trying to take his life. On learning this, the brethren brought him down to Caesarea, and then sent him by sea to Tarsus. |
Acts 9:31 | Now the church had peace throughout all Judea, and Galilee, and Samaria; and was edified, walking in the fear of the Lord, and was filled with the consolation of the Holy Ghost. | And so the church through all Judaea and Galilee and Samaria had peace and was made strong; and, living in the fear of the Lord and in the comfort of the Holy Spirit, was increased greatly. | The Church, however, throughout the whole of Judaea, Galilee and Samaria, had peace and was spiritually built up; and grew in numbers, living in the fear of the Lord and receiving encouragement from the Holy Spirit. |
Acts 9:32 | And it came to pass that Peter, as he passed through, visiting all, came to the saints who dwelt at Lydda. | And it came about that while Peter was going through all parts of the country he came to the saints who were living at Lydda. | Now Peter, as he went to town after town, came down also to God's people at Lud. |
Acts 9:33 | And he found there a certain man named Eneas, who had kept his bed for eight years, who was ill of the palsy. | And there was a certain man there, named Aeneas, who for eight years had been in bed, without power of moving. | There he found a man of the name of Aeneas, who for eight years had kept his bed, through being paralysed. |
Acts 9:34 | And Peter said to him: Eneas, the Lord Jesus Christ healeth thee: arise, and make thy bed. And immediately he arose. | And Peter said to him, Aeneas, Jesus Christ makes you well: get up and make your bed. And straight away he got up. | Peter said to him, "Aeneas, Jesus Christ cures you. Rise and make your own bed." He at once rose to his feet. |
Acts 9:35 | And all that dwelt at Lydda and Saron, saw him: who were converted to the Lord. | And all those living in Lydda and Sharon saw him, and were turned to the Lord. | And all the people of Lud and Sharon saw him; and they turned to the Lord. |
Acts 9:36 | And in Joppe there was a certain disciple named Tabitha, which by interpretation is called Dorcas. This woman was full of good works and almsdeeds which she did. | Now there was at Joppa a certain disciple named Tabitha, that is, Dorcas: this woman was given to good works and acts of mercy at all times. | Among the disciples at Jaffa was a woman called Tabitha, or, as the name may be translated, `Dorcas.' Her life was wholly devoted to the good and charitable actions which she was constantly doing. |
Acts 9:37 | And it came to pass in those days that she was sick, and died. Whom when they had washed, they laid her in an upper chamber. | And it came about, in those days, that she got ill and came to her death: and when she had been washed, they put her in a room which was high up. | But, as it happened, just at that time she was taken ill and died. After washing her body they laid it out in a room upstairs. |
Acts 9:38 | And forasmuch as Lydda was nigh to Joppe, the disciples hearing that Peter was there, sent unto him two men, desiring him that he would not be slack to come unto them. | And because Lydda was near Joppa, the disciples, having knowledge that Peter was there, sent two men to him, requesting him to come to them straight away. | Lud, however, being near Jaffa, the disciples, who had heard that Peter was at Lud, sent two men to him with an urgent request that he would come across to them without delay. |
Acts 9:39 | And Peter rising up, went with them. And when he was come, they brought him into the upper chamber. And all the widows stood about him weeping, and shewing him the coats and garments which Dorcas made them. | And Peter went with them. And when he had come, they took him into the room: and all the widows were there, weeping and putting before him the coats and clothing which Dorcas had made while she was with them. | So Peter rose and went with them. On his arrival they took him upstairs, and the widow women all came and stood by his side, weeping and showing him the underclothing and cloaks and garments of all kinds which Dorcas used to make while she was still with them. |
Acts 9:40 | And they all being put forth, Peter kneeling down prayed, and turning to the body, he said: Tabitha, arise. And she opened her eyes; and seeing Peter, she sat up. | But Peter made them all go outside, and went down on his knees in prayer; and turning to the body, he said, Tabitha, get up. And, opening her eyes, she saw Peter and got up. | Peter, however, putting every one out of the room, knelt down and prayed, and then turning to the body, he said, "Tabitha, rise." Dorcas at once opened her eyes, and seeing Peter, sat up. |
Acts 9:41 | And giving her his hand, he lifted her up. And when he had called the saints and the widows, he presented her alive. | And he took her hand, lifting her up; and, sending for the saints and widows, he gave her to them, living. | Then, giving her his hand, he raised her to her feet and, calling to him God's people and the widows, he gave her back to them alive. |
Acts 9:42 | And it was made known throughout all Joppe; and many believed in the Lord. | And news of it went all through Joppa, and a number of people had faith in the Lord. | This incident became known throughout Jaffa, and many believed in the Lord; |
Acts 9:43 | And it came to pass, that he abode many days in Joppe, with one Simon a tanner. | And he was living in Joppa for some time with Simon, a leather-worker. | and Peter remained for a considerable time at Jaffa, staying at the house of a man called Simon, a tanner. |
