Genesis 35:1 | In the meantime God said to Jacob: Arise, and go up to Bethel, and dwell there, and make there an altar to God, who appeared to thee when thou didst flee from Esau thy brother. | And God said to Jacob, Go up now to Beth-el and make your living-place there: and put up an altar there to the God who came to you when you were in flight from your brother Esau. | |
Genesis 35:2 | And Jacob having called together all his household, said: Cast away the strange gods that are among you, and be cleansed and change your garments. | Then Jacob said to all his people, Put away the strange gods which are among you, and make yourselves clean, and put on a change of clothing: | |
Genesis 35:3 | Arise, and let us go up to Bethel, that we may make there an altar to God: who heard me in the day of my affliction, and accompanied me in my journey. | And let us go up to Beth-el: and there I will make an altar to God, who gave me an answer in the day of my trouble, and was with me wherever I went. | |
Genesis 35:4 | So they gave him all the strange gods they had, and the earrings which were in their ears: and he buried them under the turpentine tree, that is behind the city of Sichem. | Then they gave to Jacob all the strange gods which they had, and the rings which were in their ears; and Jacob put them away under the holy tree at Shechem. | |
Genesis 35:5 | And when they were departed, the terror of God fell upon all the cities round about, and they durst not pursue after them as they went away. | So they went on their journey: and the fear of God was on the towns round about, so that they made no attack on the sons of Jacob. | |
Genesis 35:6 | And Jacob came to Luza, which is in the land of Chanaan, surnamed Bethel: he and all the people that were with him. | And Jacob came to Luz in the land of Canaan (which is the same as Beth-el), he and all his people. | |
Genesis 35:7 | And he built there an altar, and called the name of that place, The house of God: for there God appeared to him when he fled from his brother. | And there he made an altar, naming the place El-beth-el: because it was there he had the vision of God when he was in flight from his brother. | |
Genesis 35:8 | At the same time Debora the nurse of Rebecca died, and was buried at the foot of Bethel under an oak: and the name of that place was called, The oak of weeping. | And Deborah, the servant who had taken care of Rebekah from her birth, came to her end, and was put to rest near Beth-el, under the holy tree: and they gave it the name of Allon-bacuth. | |
Genesis 35:9 | And God appeared again to Jacob, after he returned from Mesopotamia of Syria, and he blessed him, | Now when Jacob was on his way from Paddan-aram, God came to him again and, blessing him, said, | |
Genesis 35:10 | Saying: Thou shalt not be called any more Jacob, but Israel shall be thy name. And he called him Israel. | Jacob is your name, but it will be so no longer; from now your name will be Israel; so he was named Israel. | |
Genesis 35:11 | And said to him: I am God Almighty, increase thou and be multiplied. Nations and peoples of nations shall be from thee, and kings shall come out of thy loins. | And God said to him, I am God, the Ruler of all: be fertile, and have increase; a nation, truly a group of nations, will come from you, and kings will be your offspring; | |
Genesis 35:12 | And the land which I gave to Abraham and Isaac, I will give to thee, and to thy seed after thee. | And the land which I gave to Abraham and Isaac, I will give to you; and to your seed after you I will give the land. | |
Genesis 35:13 | And he departed from him. | Then God went up from him in the place where he had been talking with him. | |
Genesis 35:14 | But he set up a monument of stone, in the place where God had spoken to him: pouring drink offerings upon it, and pouring oil thereon: | And Jacob put up a pillar in the place where he had been talking with God, and put a drink offering on it, and oil. | |
Genesis 35:15 | And calling the name of that place Bethel. | And he gave to the place where God had been talking with him, the name of Beth-el. | |
Genesis 35:16 | And going forth from thence, he came in the springtime to the land which leadeth to Ephrata: wherein when Rachel was in travail, | So they went on from Beth-el; and while they were still some distance from Ephrath, the pains of birth came on Rachel and she had a hard time. | |
Genesis 35:17 | By reason of her hard labor she began to be in danger, and the midwife said to her: Fear not, for thou shalt have this son also. | And when her pain was very great, the woman who was helping her said, Have no fear; for now you will have another son. | |
Genesis 35:18 | And when her soul was departing for pain, and death was now at hand, she called the name of her son Benoni, that is, The son of my pain: but his father called him Benjamin, that is, The son of the right hand. | And in the hour when her life went from her (for death came to her), she gave the child the name Ben-oni: but his father gave him the name of Benjamin. | |
Genesis 35:19 | So Rachel died, and was buried in the highway that leadeth to Ephrata, that is Bethlehem. | So Rachel came to her end and was put to rest on the road to Ephrath (which is Beth-lehem). | |
Genesis 35:20 | And Jacob erected a pillar over her sepulcher: this is the pillar of Rachel's monument, to this day. | And Jacob put up a pillar on her resting-place; which is named, The Pillar of the resting-place of Rachel, to this day. | |
Genesis 35:21 | Departing thence, he pitched his tent beyond the Flock tower. | And Israel went journeying on and put up his tents on the other side of the tower of the flock. | |
Genesis 35:22 | And when he dwelt in that country, Ruben went, and slept with Bala, the concubine of his father: which he was not ignorant of. Now the sons of Jacob were twelve. | Now while they were living in that country, Reuben had connection with Bilhah, his father's servant-woman: and Israel had news of it. | |
Genesis 35:23 | The sons of Lia: Ruben the firstborn, and Simeon, and Levi, and Juda, and Issachar, and Zebulon. | Now Jacob had twelve sons: the sons of Leah: Reuben, Jacob's first son, and Simeon and Levi and Judah and Issachar and Zebulun; | |

Genesis 35:25 | The sons of Bala, Rachel's handmaid: Dan and Naphthali. | The sons of Bilhah, Rachel's servant: Dan and Naphtali; | |
Genesis 35:26 | The sons of Zelpha, Lia's handmaid: Gad and Aser: these are the sons of Jacob, that were born to him in Mesopotamia of Syria. | The sons of Zilpah, Leah's servant: Gad and Asher; these are the sons whom Jacob had in Paddan-aram. | |
Genesis 35:27 | And he came to Isaac his father in Mambre, the city of Arbee, this is Hebron: Wherein Abraham and Isaac sojourned. | And Jacob came to his father Isaac at Mamre, at Kiriath-arba, that is, Hebron, where Abraham and Isaac had been living. | |
Genesis 35:28 | And the days of Isaac were a hundred and eighty years. | And Isaac was a hundred and eighty years old. | |
Genesis 35:29 | And being spent with age he died, and was gathered to his people, being old and full of days: and his sons Esau and Jacob buried him. | Then Isaac came to his end and was put to rest with his father's people, an old man after a long life: and Jacob and Esau, his sons, put him in his last resting-place. | |
