John 4:1When Jesus therefore understood that the Pharisees had heard that Jesus maketh more disciples, and baptizeth more than John,Now when it was clear to the Lord that word had come to the ears of the Pharisees that Jesus was making more disciples than John and was giving them baptismNow as soon as the Master was aware that the Pharisees had heard it said, "Jesus is gaining and baptizing more disciples than John"
John 4:2(Though Jesus himself did not baptize, but his disciples,)(Though, in fact, it was his disciples who gave baptism, not Jesus himself),though Jesus Himself did not baptize them, but His disciples did
John 4:3He left Judea, and went again into Galilee.He went out of Judaea into Galilee again.He left Judaea and returned to Galilee.
John 4:4And he was of necessity to pass through Samaria.And it was necessary for him to go through Samaria.His road lay through Samaria,
John 4:5He cometh therefore to a city of Samaria, which is called Sichar, near the land which Jacob gave to his son Joseph.So he came to a town of Samaria which was named Sychar, near to the bit of land which Jacob gave to his son Joseph:and so He came to Sychar, a town in Samaria near the piece of land that Jacob gave to his son Joseph.
John 4:6Now Jacob's well was there. Jesus therefore being wearied with his journey, sat thus on the well. It was about the sixth hour.Now Jacob's fountain was there. Jesus, being tired after his journey, was resting by the fountain. It was about the sixth hour.Jacob's Well was there: and accordingly Jesus, tired out with His journey, sat down by the well to rest. It was about six o'clock in the evening.
John 4:7There cometh a woman of Samaria, to draw water. Jesus saith to her: Give me to drink.A woman of Samaria came to get water, and Jesus said to her, Give me some water.Presently there came a woman of Samaria to draw water. Jesus asked her to give Him some water;
John 4:8For his disciples were gone into the city to buy meats.For his disciples had gone to the town to get food.for His disciples were gone to the town to buy provisions.
John 4:9Then that Samaritan woman saith to him: How dost thou, being a Jew, ask of me to drink, who am a Samaritan woman? For the Jews do not communicate with the Samaritans.The woman of Samaria said to him, Why do you, a Jew, make a request for water to me, a woman of Samaria? She said this because Jews have nothing to do with the people of Samaria."How is it," replied the woman, "that a Jew like you asks me, who am a woman and a Samaritan, for water?" (For Jews have no dealings with Samaritans.)
John 4:10Jesus answered, and said to her: If thou didst know the gift of God, and who he is that saith to thee, Give me to drink; thou perhaps wouldst have asked of him, and he would have given thee living water.In answer Jesus said, If you had knowledge of what God gives freely and who it is who says to you, Give me water, you would make your prayer to him, and he would give you living water."If you had known God's free gift," replied Jesus, "and who it is that said to you, `Give me some water,' you would have asked Him, and He would have given you living water."
John 4:11The woman saith to him: Sir, thou hast nothing wherein to draw, and the well is deep; from whence then hast thou living water?The woman said to him, Sir, you have no vessel and the fountain is deep; from where will you get the living water?"Sir," she said, "you have nothing to draw with, and the well is deep; so where can you get the living water from?
John 4:12Art thou greater than our father Jacob, who gave us the well, and drank thereof himself, and his children, and his cattle?Are you greater than our father Jacob who gave us the fountain and took the water of it himself, with his children and his cattle?Are you greater than our forefather Jacob, who gave us the well, and himself drank from it, as did also his sons and his cattle?"
John 4:13Jesus answered, and said to her: Whosoever drinketh of this water, shall thirst again; but he that shall drink of the water that I will give him, shall not thirst for ever:Jesus said to her, Everyone who takes this water will be in need of it again:"Every one," replied Jesus, "who drinks any of this water will be thirsty again;
John 4:14But the water that I will give him, shall become in him a fountain of water, springing up into life everlasting.But whoever takes the water I give him will never be in need of drink again; for the water I give him will become in him a fountain of eternal life.but whoever drinks any of the water that I shall give him will never, never thirst. But the water that I shall give him will become a fountain within him of water springing up for the Life of the Ages."
John 4:15The woman saith to him: Sir, give me this water, that I may not thirst, nor come hither to draw.The woman said to him, Sir, give me this water, so that I may not be in need again of drink and will not have to come all this way for it."Sir," said the woman, "give me that water, that I may never be thirsty, nor continually come all the way here to draw from the well."
John 4:16Jesus saith to her: Go, call thy husband, and come hither. 17 The woman answered, and said: I have no husband. Jesus said to her: Thou hast said well, I have no husband:Jesus said to her, Go, get your husband and come back here with him."Go and call your husband," said Jesus; "and come back."
John 4:18For thou hast had five husbands: and he whom thou now hast, is not thy husband. This thou hast said truly.In answer, the woman said, I have no husband. Jesus said to her, You have said rightly, I have no husband:"I have no husband," she replied. "You rightly say that you have no husband," said Jesus;
John 4:19The woman saith to him: Sir, I perceive that thou art a prophet.You have had five husbands, and the man you have now is not your husband: that was truly said."for you have had five husbands, and the man you have at present is not your husband. You have spoken the truth in saying that."
John 4:20Our fathers adored on this mountain, and you say, that at Jerusalem is the place where men must adore.The woman said to him, Sir, I see that you are a prophet."Sir," replied the woman, "I see that you are a Prophet.
John 4:21Jesus saith to her: Woman, believe me, that the hour cometh, when you shall neither on this mountain, not in Jerusalem, adore the Father.Our fathers gave worship on this mountain, but you Jews say that the right place for worship is in Jerusalem.Our forefathers worshipped on this mountain, but you Jews say that the place where people must worship is in Jerusalem."
John 4:22You adore that which you know not: we adore that which we know; for salvation is of the Jews.Jesus said to her, Woman, take my word for this; the time is coming when you will not give worship to the Father on this mountain or in Jerusalem."Believe me," said Jesus, "the time is coming when you will worship the Father neither on this mountain nor in Jerusalem.
John 4:23But the hour cometh, and now is, when the true adorers shall adore the Father in spirit and in truth. For the Father also seeketh such to adore him.You give worship, but without knowledge of what you are worshipping: we give worship to what we have knowledge of: for salvation comes from the Jews.You worship One of whom you know nothing. We worship One whom we know; for salvation comes from the Jews.
John 4:24God is a spirit; and they that adore him, must adore him in spirit and in truth.But the time is coming, and is even now here, when the true worshippers will give worship to the Father in the true way of the spirit, for these are the worshippers desired by the Father.But a time is coming nay, has already come when the true worshippers will worship the Father with true spiritual worship; for indeed the Father desires such worshippers.
John 4:25The woman saith to him: I know that the Messias cometh (who is called Christ); therefore, when he is come, he will tell us all things.God is Spirit: then let his worshippers give him worship in the true way of the spirit.God is Spirit; and those who worship Him must bring Him true spiritual worship."
John 4:26Jesus saith to her: I am he, who am speaking with thee.The woman said to him, I am certain that the Messiah, who is named Christ, is coming; when he comes he will make all things clear to us."I know," replied the woman, "that Messiah is coming `the Christ,' as He is called. When He has come, He will tell us everything."
John 4:27And immediately his disciples came; and they wondered that he talked with the woman. Yet no man said: What seekest thou? or, why talkest thou with her?Jesus said to her, I, who am talking to you, am he."I am He," said Jesus "I who am now talking to you."
John 4:28The woman therefore left her waterpot, and went her way into the city, and saith to the men there:At that point the disciples came back, and they were surprised to see him talking to a woman; but not one of them said to him, What is your purpose? or, Why are you talking to her?Just then His disciples came, and were surprised to find Him talking with a woman. Yet not one of them asked Him, "What is your wish?" or "Why are you talking with her?"
John 4:29Come, and see a man who has told me all things whatsoever I have done. Is not he the Christ?Then the woman put down her water-pot and went into the town, and said to the people,The woman however, leaving her pitcher, went away to the town, and called the people.
John 4:30They went therefore out of the city, and came unto him.Come and see a man who has been talking to me of everything I ever did! Is it possible that this is the Christ?"Come," she said, "and see a man who has told me everything I have ever done. Can this be the Christ, do you think?"
John 4:31In the mean time the disciples prayed him, saying: Rabbi, eat.So they went out of the town and came to him.They left the town and set out to go to Him.
John 4:32But he said to them: I have meat to eat, which you know not.While this was taking place, the disciples were saying to Jesus, Master, take some food.Meanwhile the disciples were urging Jesus. "Rabbi," they said, "eat something."
John 4:33The disciples therefore said one to another: Hath any man brought him to eat?But he said to them, I have food of which you have no knowledge."I have food to eat," He replied, "of which you do not know."
John 4:34Jesus saith to them: My meat is to do the will of him that sent me, that I may perfect his work.So the disciples said one to another, Did anyone give him food?So the disciples began questioning one another. "Can it be," they said, "that some one has brought Him something to eat?"
John 4:35Do you not say, There are yet four months, and then the harvest cometh? Behold, I say to you, lift up your eyes, and see the countries; for they are white already to harvest.Jesus said, My food is to do the pleasure of him who sent me and to make his work complete."My food," said Jesus, "is to be obedient to Him who sent me, and fully to accomplish His work.
John 4:36And he that reapeth receiveth wages, and gathereth fruit unto life everlasting: that both he that soweth, and he that reapeth, may rejoice together.You would say, Four months from now is the time of the grain-cutting. Take a look, I say to you, at the fields; they are even now white for cutting.Do you not say, `It wants four months yet to the harvest'? But look round, I tell you, and observe these plains they are already ripe for the sickle.
John 4:37For in this is the saying true: That it is one man that soweth, and it is another that reapeth.He who does the cutting now has his reward; he is getting together fruit for eternal life, so that he who did the planting and he who gets in the grain may have joy together.The reaper gets pay and gathers in a crop in preparation for the Life of the Ages, that so the sower and the reapers may rejoice together.
John 4:38I have sent you to reap that in which you did not labour: others have laboured, and you have entered into their labours.In this the saying is a true one, One does the planting, and another gets in the grain.For it is in this that you see the real meaning of the saying, `The sower is one person, and the reaper is another.'
John 4:39Now of that city many of the Samaritans believed in him, for the word of the woman giving testimony: He told me all things whatsoever I have done.I sent you to get in grain which you had no hand in planting: other men did that work, and you take the reward.I sent you to reap a harvest which is not the result of your own labours. Others have laboured, and you are getting benefit from their labours."
John 4:40So when the Samaritans were come to him, they desired that he would tarry there. And he abode there two days.Now a number of the people of that town had faith in him because of the woman's witness: He has been talking to me of everything I ever did.Of the Samaritan population of that town a good many believed in Him because of the woman's statement when she declared, "He has told me all that I have ever done."
John 4:41And many more believed in him because of his own word.So when the people came to him they made request to him to be among them for a time, and he was there two days.When however the Samaritans came to Him, they asked Him on all sides to stay with them; and He stayed there two days.
John 4:42And they said to the woman: We now believe, not for thy saying: for we ourselves have heard him, and know that this is indeed the Saviour of the world.And a great number more of them came to have faith in him because of what he himself said.Then a far larger number of people believed because of His own words,
John 4:43Now after two days, he departed thence, and went into Galilee.And they said to the woman, Now we have faith, but not because of your story: we ourselves have given ear to his words, and we are certain that he is truly the Saviour of the world.and they said to the woman, "We no longer believe in Him simply because of your statements; for we have now heard for ourselves, and we know that this man really is the Saviour of the world."
John 4:44For Jesus himself gave testimony that a prophet hath no honour in his own country.And after the two days he went on from there into Galilee.After the two days He departed, and went into Galilee;
John 4:45And when he was come into Galilee, the Galileans received him, having seen all the things he had done at Jerusalem on the festival day; for they also went to the festival day.For Jesus himself said that a prophet has no honour in the country of his birth.though Jesus Himself declared that a Prophet has no honour in his own country.
John 4:46He came again therefore into Cana of Galilee, where he made the water wine. And there was a certain ruler, whose son was sick at Capharnaum.So when he came into Galilee, the Galilaeans took him to their hearts because of the things which they had seen him do in Jerusalem at the feast they themselves having been there at the feast.When however He reached Galilee, the Galilaeans welcomed Him eagerly, having been eye-witnesses of all that He had done in Jerusalem at the Festival; for they also had been to the Festival.
John 4:47He having heard that Jesus was come from Judea into Galilee, went to him, and prayed him to come down, and heal his son; for he was at the point of death.So he came to Cana in Galilee, where he had made the water wine. And there was a certain man of high position whose son was ill at Capernaum.So He came once more to Cana in Galilee, where He had made the water into wine. Now there was a certain officer of the King's court whose son was ill at Capernaum.
John 4:48Jesus therefore said to him: Unless you see signs and wonders, you believe not.When it came to his ears that Jesus had come from Judaea into Galilee, he went to him and made a request that he would come down to his son, who was near to death, and make him well.Having heard that Jesus had come from Judaea to Galilee, he came to Him and begged Him to go down and cure his son; for he was at the point of death.
John 4:49The ruler saith to him: Lord, come down before that my son die.Then Jesus said to him, You will not have faith if you do not see signs and wonders."Unless you and others see miracles and marvels," said Jesus, "nothing will induce you to believe."
John 4:50Jesus saith to him: Go thy way; thy son liveth. The man believed the word which Jesus said to him, and went his way.The man said, Sir, come down before my boy is dead."Sir," pleaded the officer, "come down before my child dies."
John 4:51And as he was going down, his servants met him; and they brought word, saying, that his son lived.And Jesus said, Go in peace; your son is living. The man had faith in the word which Jesus said to him and went away."You may return home," replied Jesus; "your son has recovered." He believed the words of Jesus, and started back home;
John 4:52He asked therefore of them the hour wherein he grew better. And they said to him: Yesterday, at the seventh hour, the fever left him.And while he was going down, his servants came to him and said, Your boy is living.and he was already on his way down when his servants met him and told him that his son was alive and well.
John 4:53The father therefore knew, that it was at the same hour that Jesus said to him, Thy son liveth; and himself believed, and his whole house.So he put a question to them as to the hour when he became better; and they said to him, The disease went from him yesterday at the seventh hour.So he inquired of them at what hour he had shown improvement. "Yesterday, about seven o'clock," they replied, "the fever left him."
John 4:54This is again the second miracle that Jesus did, when he was come out of Judea into Galilee.It was clear then to the father that this was the very time at which Jesus said to him, Your son is living. And he had faith in Jesus, he and all his family.Then the father recollected that that was the time at which Jesus had said to him, "Your son has recovered," and he and his whole household became believers.
