Jonah 3:1And the word of the Lord came to Jonas the second time, saying:And the word of the Lord came to Jonah a second time, saying,
Jonah 3:2Arise, and go to Ninive the great city: and preach in it the preaching that I bid thee.Up! go to Nineveh, that great town, and give it the word which I have given you.
Jonah 3:3And Jonas arose, and went to Ninive, according to the word of the Lord: now Ninive was a great city of three days' journey. So Jonah got up and went to Nineveh as the Lord had said. Now Nineveh was a very great town, three days' journey from end to end.
Jonah 3:4And Jonas began to enter into the city one day's journey: and he cried, and said: Yet forty days, and Ninive shall be destroyed. And Jonah first of all went a day's journey into the town, and crying out said, In forty days destruction will overtake Nineveh.
Jonah 3:5And the men of Ninive believed in God: and they proclaimed a fast, and put on sackcloth from the greatest to the least. And the people of Nineveh had belief in God; and a time was fixed for going without food, and they put on haircloth, from the greatest to the least.
Jonah 3:6And the word came to the king of Ninive; and he rose up out of his throne, and cast away his robe from him, and was clothed with sackcloth, and sat in ashes. And the word came to the king of Nineveh, and he got up from his seat of authority, and took off his robe, and covering himself with haircloth, took his seat in the dust.
Jonah 3:7And he caused it to be proclaimed and published in Ninive from the mouth of the king and of his princes, saying: Let neither men nor beasts, oxen nor sheep, taste any thing: let them not feed, nor drink water. And he had it given out in Nineveh, By the order of the king and his great men, no man or beast, herd or flock, is to have a taste of anything; let them have no food or water:
Jonah 3:8And let men and beasts be covered with sackcloth, and cry to the Lord with all their strength, and let them turn every one from his evil way, and from the iniquity that is in their hands. And let man and beast be covered with haircloth, and let them make strong prayers to God: and let everyone be turned from his evil way and the violent acts of their hands.
Jonah 3:9Who can tell if God will turn, and forgive: and will turn away from his fierce anger, and we shall not perish?Who may say that God will not be turned, changing his purpose and turning away from his burning wrath, so that destruction may not overtake us?
Jonah 3:10And God saw their works, that they were turned from their evil way: and God had mercy with regard to the evil which he had said that he would do to them, and he did it not.And God saw what they did, how they were turned from their evil way; and God's purpose was changed as to the evil which he said he would do to them, and he did it not.
