Judges 13:1And the children of Israel did evil again in the sight of the Lord: and he delivered them into the hands of the Philistines forty years.And the children of Israel again did evil in the eyes of the Lord; and the Lord gave them into the hands of the Philistines for forty years.
Judges 13:2Now there was a certain man of Saraa, and of the race of Dan, whose name was Manue, and his wife was barren.Now there was a certain man of Zorah of the family of the Danites, and his name was Manoah; and his wife had never given birth to a child.
Judges 13:3And an angel of the Lord appeared to her, and said: Thou art barren and without children: but thou shalt conceive and bear a son.And the angel of the Lord came to the woman, and said to her, See now! though you have never given birth to children, you will be with child and give birth to a son.
Judges 13:4Now therefore beware and drink no wine nor strong drink, and eat not any unclean thing.Now then take care to have no wine or strong drink and to take no unclean thing for food;
Judges 13:5Because thou shalt conceive and bear a son, and no razor shall touch his head: for he shall be a Nazarite of God, from his infancy, and from his mother's womb, and he shall begin to deliver Israel from the hands of the Philistines.For you are with child and will give birth to a son; his hair is never to be cut, for the child is to be separate to God from his birth; and he will take up the work of freeing Israel from the hands of the Philistines.
Judges 13:6And when she was come to her husband she said to him: A man of God came to me, having the countenance of an angel, very awful. And when I asked him who he was, and whence he came, and by what name he was called, he would not tell me.Then the woman came in, and said to her husband, A man came to me, and his form was like the form of a god, causing great fear; I put no question to him about where he came from, and he did not give me his name;
Judges 13:7But he answered thus: Behold thou shalt conceive and bear a son: beware thou drink no wine, nor strong drink, nor eat any unclean thing: for the child shall be a Nazarite of God from his infancy, from his mother's womb until the day of his death.But he said to me, You are with child and will give birth to a son; and now do not take any wine or strong drink or let anything unclean be your food; for the child will be separate to God from his birth to the day of his death.
Judges 13:8Then Manue prayed to the Lord, and said: I beseech thee, O Lord, that the mail of God, whom thou didst send, may come again, and teach us what we ought to do concerning the child that shall be born.Then Manoah made prayer to the Lord, and said, O Lord, let the man of God whom you sent come to us again and make clear to us what we are to do for the child who is to come.
Judges 13:9And the Lord heard the prayer of Manue, and the angel of the Lord appeared again to his wife as she was sitting in the field. But Manue her husband was not with her. And when she saw the angel,And God gave ear to the voice of Manoah; and the angel of God came to the woman again when she was seated in the field; but her husband Manoah was not with her.
Judges 13:10She made haste and ran to her husband: and told him saying: Behold the man hath appeared to me whom I saw before.So the woman, running quickly, gave her husband the news, saying, I have seen the man who came to me the other day.
Judges 13:11He rose up and followed his wife: and coming to the man, said to him: Art thou he that spoke to the woman? And he answered: I am.And Manoah got up and went after his wife, and came up to the man and said to him, Are you the man who was talking to this woman? And he said, I am.
Judges 13:12And Manue said to him: When thy word shall come to pass, what wilt thou that the child should do? or from what shall he keep himself?And Manoah said, Now when your words come true, what is to be the rule for the child and what will be his work?
Judges 13:13And the angel of the Lord said to Manue: From all the things I have spoken of to thy wife, let her refrain herself:And the angel of the Lord said to Manoah, Let the woman take note of what I have said to her.
Judges 13:14And let her eat nothing that cometh of the vine, neither let her drink wine or strong drink, nor eat any unclean thing: and whatsoever I have commanded her, let her fulfil and observe.She is to have nothing which comes from the vine for her food, and let her take no wine or strong drink or anything which is unclean; let her take care to do all I have given her orders to do.
Judges 13:15And Manue said to the angel of the Lord: I beseech thee to consent to my request, and let us dress a kid for thee.And Manoah said to the angel of the Lord, Now let us keep you while we make ready a young goat for you.
Judges 13:16And the angel answered him: If thou press me, I will not eat of thy bread: but if thou wilt offer a holocaust, offer it to the Lord. And Manue knew not it was the angel of the Lord.And the angel of the Lord said to Manoah, Though you keep me I will not take of your food; but if you will make a burned offering, let it be offered to the Lord. For it had not come into Manoah's mind that he was the angel of the Lord.
Judges 13:17And he said to him: What is thy name, that, if thy word shall come to pass, we may honour thee?Then Manoah said to the angel of the Lord, What is your name, so that when your words come true we may give you honour?
Judges 13:18And he answered him: Why askest thou my name, which is wonderful?But the angel of the Lord said to him, Why are you questioning me about my name, seeing that it is a wonder?
Judges 13:19Then Manue took a kid of the flocks, and the libations, and put them upon a rock, offering to the Lord, who doth wonderful things: and he and his wife looked on.So Manoah took the young goat with its meal offering, offering it on the rock to the Lord, who did strange things.
Judges 13:20And when the flame from the altar went up towards heaven, the angel of the lord ascended also in the flame. And when Manue and his wife saw this, they fell flat on the ground.And when the flame went up to heaven from the altar, the angel of the Lord went up in the flame of the altar, while Manoah and his wife were looking on; and they went down on their faces to the earth.
Judges 13:21And the angel of the Lord appeared to them no more. And forthwith Manue understood that it was an angel of the Lord,But the angel of the Lord was seen no more by Manoah and his wife. Then it was clear to Manoah that he was the angel of the Lord.
Judges 13:22And he said to his wife: We shall certainly die, because we have seen God.And Manoah said to his wife, Death will certainly be our fate, for it is a god whom we have seen.
Judges 13:23And his wife answered him: If the Lord had a mind to kill us, he would not have received a holocaust and libations at our hands, neither would he have shewed us all these things, nor have told us the things that are to come.But his wife said to him, If the Lord was purposing our death, he would not have taken our burned offering and our meal offering, or have given us such orders about the child.
Judges 13:24And she bore a son, and called his name Samson. And the child grew, and the Lord blessed him.So the woman gave birth to a son, and gave him the name Samson; and he became a man and the blessing of the Lord was on him.
Judges 13:25And the spirit of the Lord began to be with him in the camp of Dan, between Saraa and Esthaol.And the spirit of the Lord first came on him in Mahaneh-dan, between Zorah and Eshtaol.
