Luke 1:1Forasmuch as many have taken in hand to set forth in order a narration of the things that have been accomplished among us;As a number of attempts have been made to put together in order an account of those events which took place among us,Seeing that many have attempted to draw up a narrative of the facts which are received with full assurance among us
Luke 1:2According as they have delivered them unto us, who from the beginning were eyewitnesses and ministers of the word:As they were handed down to us by those who saw them from the first and were preachers of the word,on the authority of those who were from the beginning eye-witnesses and were devoted to the service of the divine Message,
Luke 1:3It seemed good to me also, having diligently attained to all things from the beginning, to write to thee in order, most excellent Theophilus,It seemed good to me, having made observation, with great care, of the direction of events in their order, to put the facts in writing for you, most noble Theophilus;it has seemed right to me also, after careful investigation of the facts from their commencement, to write for you, most noble Theophilus, a connected account,
Luke 1:4That thou mayest know the verity of those words in which thou hast been instructed.So that you might have certain knowledge of those things about which you were given teaching.that you may fully know the truth of the things which you have been taught by word of mouth.
Luke 1:5There was in the days of Herod, the king of Judea, a certain priest named Zachary, of the course of Abia; and his wife was of the daughters of Aaron, and her name Elizabeth.In the days of Herod, king of Judaea, there was a certain priest, by name Zacharias, of the order of Abijah; and he had a wife of the family of Aaron, and her name was Elisabeth.There was in the time of Herod, the king of Judaea, a priest of the name of Zechariah, belonging to the class of Abijah. He had a wife who was a descendant of Aaron, and her name was Elizabeth.
Luke 1:6And they were both just before God, walking in all the commandments and justifications of the Lord without blame.They were upright in the eyes of God, keeping all the rules and orders of God, and doing no wrong.They were both of them upright before God, blamelessly obeying all the Lord's precepts and ordinances.
Luke 1:7And they had no son, for that Elizabeth was barren, and they both were well advanced in years.And they were without children, because Elisabeth had never given birth, and they were at that time very old.But they had no child, because Elizabeth was barren; and both of them were far advanced in life.
Luke 1:8And it came to pass, when he executed the priestly function in the order of his course before God,Now it came about that in his turn he was acting as priest before God,Now while he was doing priestly duty before God in the prescribed course of his class,
Luke 1:9According to the custom of the priestly office, it was his lot to offer incense, going into the temple of the Lord.And as was the way of the priests, he had to go into the Temple to see to the burning of perfumes.it fell to his lot according to the custom of the priesthood to go into the Sanctuary of the Lord and burn the incense;
Luke 1:10And all the multitude of the people was praying without, at the hour of incense.And all the people were offering prayers outside, at the time of the burning of perfumes.and the whole multitude of the people were outside praying, at the hour of incense.
Luke 1:11And there appeared to him an angel of the Lord, standing on the right side of the alter of incense.And he saw an angel of the Lord in his place on the right side of the altar.Then there appeared to him an angel of the Lord standing on the right side of the altar of incense;
Luke 1:12And Zachary seeing him, was troubled, and fear fell upon him.And Zacharias was troubled when he saw him, and fear came on him.and Zechariah on seeing him was agitated and terrified.
Luke 1:13But the angel said to him: Fear not, Zachary, for thy prayer is heard; and thy wife Elizabeth shall bear thee a son, and thou shalt call his name John:But the angel said, Have no fear, Zacharias, for your prayer has come to the ears of God, and your wife Elisabeth will have a son, and his name will be John.But the angel said to him, "Do not be afraid, Zechariah, for your petition has been heard: and your wife Elizabeth will bear you a son, and you are to call his name John.
Luke 1:14And thou shalt have joy and gladness, and many shall rejoice in his nativity.And you will be glad and have great delight; and numbers of people will have joy at his birth.Gladness and exultant joy shall be yours, and many will rejoice over his birth.
Luke 1:15For he shall be great before the Lord; and shall drink no wine nor strong drink: and he shall be filled with the Holy Ghost, even from his mother's womb.For he will be great in the eyes of the Lord; he will not take wine or strong drink; and he will be full of the Spirit of God from his birth.For he will be great in the sight of the Lord; no wine or fermented drink shall he ever drink; but he will be filled with the Holy Spirit from the very hour of his birth.
Luke 1:16And he shall convert many of the children of Israel to the Lord their God.And through him great numbers of the children of Israel will be turned to the Lord their God.Many of the descendants of Israel will he turn to the Lord their God;
Luke 1:17And he shall go before him in the spirit and power of Elias; that he may turn the hearts of the fathers unto the children, and the incredulous to the wisdom of the just, to prepare unto the Lord a perfect people.And he will go before his face in the spirit and power of Elijah, turning the hearts of fathers to their children, and wrongdoers to the way of righteousness; to make ready a people whose hearts have been turned to the Lord.and he will be His forerunner in the spirit and power of Elijah, to turn fathers' hearts to the children, and cause the rebellious to walk in the wisdom of the upright, to make a people perfectly ready for the lord."
Luke 1:18And Zachary said to the angel: Whereby shall I know this? for I am an old man, and my wife is advanced in years.And Zacharias said to the angel, How may I be certain of this? For I am an old man, and my wife is far on in years."By what proof," asked Zechariah, "shall I know this? For I am an old man, and my wife is far advanced in years."
Luke 1:19And the angel answering, said to him: I am Gabriel, who stand before God: and am sent to speak to thee, and to bring thee these good tidings.And the angel, answering, said, I am Gabriel, whose place is before God; I have been sent to say these words to you and to give you this good news."I am Gabriel, who stand in the presence of God," answered the angel, "and I have been sent to talk with you and tell you this good news.
Luke 1:20And behold, thou shalt be dumb, and shalt not be able to speak until the day wherein these things shall come to pass, because thou hast not believed my words, which shall be fulfilled in their time.Now, see, you will be without voice or language till the day when these things come about, because you had not faith in my words, which will have effect at the right time.And now you will be dumb and unable to speak until the day when this has taken place; because you did not believe my words words which will be fulfilled at their appointed time."
Luke 1:21And the people were waiting for Zachary; and they wondered that he tarried so long in the temple.And the people were waiting for Zacharias and were surprised because he was in the Temple for such a long time.Meanwhile the people were waiting for Zechariah, and were surprised that he stayed so long in the Sanctuary.
Luke 1:22And when he came out, he could not speak to them: and they understood that he had seen a vision in the temple. And he made signs to them, and remained dumb.And when he came out he was not able to say anything, and they saw that he had seen a vision in the Temple; and he was making signs to them without words.When, however, he came out, he was unable to speak to them; and they knew that he must have seen a vision in the Sanctuary; but he kept making signs to them and continued dumb.
Luke 1:23And it came to pass, after the days of his office were accomplished, he departed to his own house.And when the days of his work in the Temple were ended, he went back to his house.When his days of service were at an end, he went to his home;
Luke 1:24And after those days, Elizabeth his wife conceived, and hid herself five months, saying:After that time, Elisabeth, being certain that she was to become a mother, kept herself from men's eyes for five months, saying,and in course of time his wife Elizabeth conceived, and kept herself secluded five months.
Luke 1:25Thus hath the Lord dealt with me in the days wherein he hath had regard to take away my reproach among men.The Lord has done this to me, for his eyes were on me, to take away my shame in the eyes of men."Thus has the Lord dealt with me," she said, "now that He has graciously taken away my reproach among men."
Luke 1:26And in the sixth month, the angel Gabriel was sent from God into a city of Galilee, called Nazareth,Now in the sixth month the angel Gabriel was sent from God to a town in Galilee, named Nazareth,Now in the sixth month the angel Gabriel was sent from God to a town in Galilee called Nazareth,
Luke 1:27To a virgin espoused to a man whose name was Joseph, of the house of David; and the virgin's name was Mary.To a virgin who was to be married to a man named Joseph, of the family of David; and the name of the virgin was Mary.to a maiden betrothed to a man of the name of Joseph, a descendant of David. The maiden's name was Mary.
Luke 1:28And the angel being come in, said unto her: Hail, full of grace, the Lord is with thee: blessed art thou among women.And the angel came in to her and said, Peace be with you, to whom special grace has been given; the Lord is with you.So Gabriel went into the house and said to her, "Joy be to you, favoured one! the Lord is with you."
Luke 1:29Who having heard, was troubled at his saying, and thought with herself what manner of salutation this should be.But she was greatly troubled at his words, and said to herself, What may be the purpose of these words?She was greatly agitated at his words, and wondered what such a greeting meant.
Luke 1:30And the angel said to her: Fear not, Mary, for thou hast found grace with God.And the angel said to her, Have no fear, Mary, for you have God's approval.But the angel said, "Do not be frightened, Mary, for you have found favour with God.
Luke 1:31Behold thou shalt conceive in thy womb, and shalt bring forth a son; and thou shalt call his name Jesus.And see, you will give birth to a son, and his name will be Jesus.You will conceive in your womb and bear a son; and you are to call His name JESUS.
Luke 1:32He shall be great, and shall be called the Son of the most High; and the Lord God shall give unto him the throne of David his father; and he shall reign in the house of Jacob for ever.He will be great, and will be named the Son of the Most High: and the Lord God will give him the kingdom of David, his father:He will be great and He will be called `Son of the Most High.' And the Lord God will give Him the throne of His forefather David;
Luke 1:33And of his kingdom there shall be no end.He will have rule over the house of Jacob for ever, and of his kingdom there will be no end.and He will be King over the House of Jacob for the Ages, and of His Kingdom there will be no end."
Luke 1:34And Mary said to the angel: How shall this be done, because I know not man?And Mary said to the angel, How may this be, because I have had no knowledge of a man?"How can this be," Mary replied, "seeing that I have no husband?"
Luke 1:35And the angel answering, said to her: The Holy Ghost shall come upon thee, and the power of the most High shall overshadow thee. And therefore also the Holy which shall be born of thee shall be called the Son of God.And the angel in answer said to her, The Holy Spirit will come on you, and the power of the Most High will come to rest on you, and so that which will come to birth will be named holy, Son of God.The angel answered, "The Holy Spirit will come upon you, and the power of the Most High will overshadow you; and for this reason your holy offspring will be called `the Son of God.'
Luke 1:36And behold thy cousin Elizabeth, she also hath conceived a son in her old age; and this is the sixth month with her that is called barren:Even now Elisabeth, who is of your family, is to be a mother, though she is old: and this is the sixth month with her who was without children.And see, your relative Elizabeth she also has conceived a son in her old age; and this is the sixth month with her who was called barren.
Luke 1:37Because no word shall be impossible with God.For there is nothing which God is not able to do.For no promise from God will be impossible of fulfilment."
Luke 1:38And Mary said: Behold the handmaid of the Lord; be it done to me according to thy word. And the angel departed from her.And Mary said: I am the servant of the Lord; may it be to me as you say. And the angel went away."I am the Lord's maidservant," Mary replied; "may it be with me in accordance with your words!" And then the angel left her.
Luke 1:39And Mary rising up in those days, went into the hill country with haste into a city of Juda.Then Mary got up and went quickly into the high lands, to a town of Judah;Not long after this, Mary rose up and went in haste into the hill country to a town in Judah.
Luke 1:40And she entered into the house of Zachary, and saluted Elizabeth.And went into the house of Zacharias and took Elisabeth in her arms.Here she came to the house of Zechariah and greeted Elizabeth;
Luke 1:41And it came to pass, that when Elizabeth heard the salutation of Mary, the infant leaped in her womb. And Elizabeth was filled with the Holy Ghost:And when the voice of Mary came to the ears of Elisabeth, the baby made a sudden move inside her; then Elisabeth was full of the Holy Spirit,and as soon as Elizabeth heard Mary's greeting, the babe leapt within her. And Elizabeth was filled with the Holy Spirit,
Luke 1:42And she cried out with a loud voice, and said: Blessed art thou among women, and blessed is the fruit of thy womb.And she said with a loud voice: May blessing be on you among women, and a blessing on the child of your body.and uttered a loud cry of joy. "Blest among women are you," she said, "and the offspring of your body is blest!
Luke 1:43And whence is this to me, that the mother of my Lord should come to me?How is it that the mother of my Lord comes to me?But why is this honour done me, that the mother of my Lord should come to me?
Luke 1:44For behold as soon as the voice of thy salutation sounded in my ears, the infant in my womb leaped for joy.For, truly, when the sound of your voice came to my ears, the baby in my body made a sudden move for joy.For, the moment your greeting reached my ears, the babe within me leapt for joy.
Luke 1:45And blessed art thou that hast believed, because those things shall be accomplished that were spoken to thee by the Lord.Happy will she be who had faith that the things which the Lord has said to her will be done.And blessed is she who has believed, for the word spoken to her from the Lord shall be fulfilled."
Luke 1:46And Mary said: My soul doth magnify the Lord.And Mary said: My soul gives glory to God;Then Mary said: "My soul extols the Lord,
Luke 1:47And my spirit hath rejoiced in God my Saviour.My spirit is glad in God my Saviour.And my spirit triumphs in God my Saviour;
Luke 1:48Because he hath regarded the humility of his handmaid; for behold from henceforth all generations shall call me blessed.For he has had pity on his servant, though she is poor and lowly placed: and from this hour will all generations give witness to the blessing which has come to me.Because He has not turned from His maidservant in her lowly position; For from this time forward all generations will account me happy,
Luke 1:49Because he that is mighty, hath done great things to me; and holy is his name.For he who is strong has done great things for me; and holy is his name.Because the mighty One has done great things for me Holy is His name!
Luke 1:50And his mercy is from generation unto generations, to them that fear him.His mercy is for all generations in whom is the fear of him.And His compassion is, generation after generation, Upon those who fear Him.
Luke 1:51He hath shewed might in his arm: he hath scattered the proud in the conceit of their heart.With his arm he has done acts of power; he has put to flight those who have pride in their hearts.He has manifested His supreme strength. He has scattered those who were haughty in the thoughts of their hearts.
Luke 1:52He hath put down the mighty from their seat, and hath exalted the humble.He has put down kings from their seats, lifting up on high the men of low degree.He has cast monarchs down from their thrones, And exalted men of low estate.
Luke 1:53He hath filled the hungry with good things; and the rich he hath sent empty away.Those who had no food he made full of good things; the men of wealth he sent away with nothing in their hands;The hungry He has satisfied with choice gifts, But the rich He has sent empty-handed away.
Luke 1:54He hath received Israel his servant, being mindful of his mercy:His help he has given to Israel, his servant, so that he might keep in mind his mercy to Abraham and his seed for ever,His servant Israel He has helped, Remembering His compassion
Luke 1:55As he spoke to our fathers, to Abraham and to his seed for ever.As he gave his word to our fathers.In fulfillment of His promises to our forefathers For Abraham and his posterity for ever."
Luke 1:56And Mary abode with her about three months; and she returned to her own house.And Mary was with her for about three months and then went back to her house.So Mary stayed with Elizabeth about three months, and then returned home.
Luke 1:57Now Elizabeth's full time of being delivered was come, and she brought forth a son.Now it was time for Elisabeth to give birth, and she had a son.Now when Elizabeth's full time was come, she gave birth to a son;
Luke 1:58And her neighbours and kinsfolks heard that the Lord had shewed his great mercy towards her, and they congratulated with her.And it came to the ears of her neighbours and relations that the Lord had been very good to her, and they took part in her joy.and her neighbours and relatives heard how the Lord had had great compassion on her; and they rejoiced with her.
Luke 1:59And it came to pass, that on the eighth day they came to circumcise the child, and they called him by his father's name Zachary.And on the eighth day they came to see to the circumcision of the child, and they would have given him the name of Zacharias, his father's name;And on the eighth day they came to circumcise the child, and were going to call him Zechariah, after his father.
Luke 1:60And his mother answering, said: Not so; but he shall be called John.But his mother made answer and said, No, his name is John.His mother, however, said, "No, he is to be called John."
Luke 1:61And they said to her: There is none of thy kindred that is called by this name.And they said, Not one of your relations has that name."There is not one of your family," they said, "who has that name."
Luke 1:62And they made signs to his father, how he would have him called.And they made signs to his father, to say what name was to be given to him.They asked his father by signs what he wished him to be called.
Luke 1:63And demanding a writing table, he wrote, saying: John is his name. And they all wondered.And he sent for writing materials and put down: His name is John; and they were all surprised.So he asked for a writing-tablet, and wrote, "His name is John." And they all wondered.
Luke 1:64And immediately his mouth was opened, and his tongue loosed, and he spoke, blessing God.And straight away his mouth was open and his tongue was free and he gave praise to God.Instantly his mouth and his tongue were set free, and he began to speak and bless God.
Luke 1:65And fear came upon all their neighbours; and all these things were noised abroad over all the hill country of Judea.And fear came on all those who were living round about them: and there was much talk about all these things in all the hill-country of Judaea.And all who lived round about them were filled with awe, and throughout the hill country of Judaea reports of all these things were spread abroad.
Luke 1:66And all they that had heard them laid them up in their heart, saying: What an one, think ye, shall this child be? For the hand of the Lord was with him.And all who had word of them kept them in their minds and said, What will this child be? For the hand of the Lord was with him.All who heard the story treasured it in their memories. "What then will this child be?" they said. For the lord's hand was indeed with him.
Luke 1:67And Zachary his father was filled with the Holy Ghost; and he prophesied, saying:And his father, Zacharias, was full of the Holy Spirit, and with the voice of a prophet said these words:And Zechariah his father was filled with the Holy Spirit, and spoke in a rapture of praise.
Luke 1:68Blessed be the Lord God of Israel; because he hath visited and wrought the redemption of his people:Praise be to the Lord, the God of Israel, for he has come to his people and made them free,"Blessed be the Lord, the God of Israel," he said, "Because He has not forgotten His people but has effected redemption for them,
Luke 1:69And hath raised up an horn of salvation to us, in the house of David his servant:Lifting up a horn of salvation for us in the house of his servant David,And has raised up a mighty Deliverer for us In the house of David His servant
Luke 1:70As he spoke by the mouth of his holy prophets, who are from the beginning:(As he said, by the mouth of his holy prophets, from the earliest times,)As He has spoken from all time by the lips of His holy Prophets
Luke 1:71Salvation from our enemies, and from the hand of all that hate us:Salvation from those who are against us, and from the hands of those who have hate for us;To deliver us from our foes and from the power of all who hate us.
Luke 1:72To perform mercy to our fathers, and to remember his holy testament,To do acts of mercy to our fathers and to keep in mind his holy word,He dealt pitifully with our forefathers, And remembered His holy covenant,
Luke 1:73The oath, which he swore to Abraham our father, that he would grant to us,The oath which he made to Abraham, our father,The oath which He swore to Abraham our forefather,
Luke 1:74That being delivered from the hand of our enemies, we may serve him without fear,That we, being made free from the fear of those who are against us, might give him worship,To grant us to be rescued from the power of our foes And so render worship to Him free from fear,
Luke 1:75In holiness and justice before him, all our days.In righteousness and holy living before him all our days.In piety and uprightness before Him all our days.
Luke 1:76And thou, child, shalt be called the prophet of the Highest: for thou shalt go before the face of the Lord to prepare his ways:And you, child, will be named the prophet of the Most High: you will go before the face of the Lord, to make ready his ways;And you moreover, O child, shall be called Prophet of the Most High; For you shall go on in front before the Lord to prepare the way for Him,
Luke 1:77To give knowledge of salvation to his people, unto the remission of their sins:To give knowledge of salvation to his people, through the forgiveness of sins,To give to His People a knowledge of salvation In the forgiveness of their sins,
Luke 1:78Through the bowels of the mercy of our God, in which the Orient from on high hath visited us:Because of the loving mercies of our God, by which the dawn from heaven has come to us,Through the tender compassion of our God, Through which the daybreak from on high will come to us,
Luke 1:79To enlighten them that sit in darkness, and in the shadow of death: to direct our feet into the way of peace.To give light to those in dark places, and in the shade of death, so that our feet may be guided into the way of peace.Dawning on those who now dwell in the darkness and shadow of death To direct our feet into the path of peace."
Luke 1:80And the child grew, and was strengthened in spirit; and was in the deserts until the day of his manifestation to Israel.And the child became tall, and strong in spirit; and he was living in the waste land till the day when he came before the eyes of Israel.And the child grew and became strong in character, and lived in the Desert till the time came for him to appear publicly to Israel.
