Luke 5:1And it came to pass, that when the multitudes pressed upon him to hear the word of God, he stood by the lake of Genesareth,Now it came about that while the people came pushing to be near him, and to have knowledge of the word of God, he was by a wide stretch of water named Gennesaret;On one occasion the crowd was pressing on Him and listening to God's Message, while He was standing by the Lake of Gennesaret.
Luke 5:2And saw two ships standing by the lake: but the fishermen were gone out of them, and were washing their nets.And he saw two boats by the edge of the water, but the fishermen had gone out of them and were washing their nets.He, however, saw two fishing-boats drawn up on the beach (for the men had gone away from them and were washing the nets),
Luke 5:3And going into one of the ships that was Simon's, he desired him to draw back a little from the land. And sitting he taught the multitudes out of the ship.And he got into one of the boats, the property of Simon, and made a request to him to go a little way out from the land. And being seated he gave the people teaching from the boat.and going on board one of them, which was Simon's He asked him to push out a little from land. Then He sat down and taught the crowd of people from the boat.
Luke 5:4Now when he had ceased to speak, he said to Simon: Launch out into the deep, and let down your nets for a draught.And when his talk was ended, he said to Simon, Go out into deep water, and let down your nets for fish.When He had finished speaking, He said to Simon, "Push out into deep water, and let down your nets for a haul."
Luke 5:5And Simon answering said to him: Master, we have labored all the night, and have taken nothing: but at thy word I will let down the net.And Simon, answering, said, Master, we were working all night and we took nothing: but at your word I will let down the nets."Rabbi," replied Peter, "all night long we have worked hard and caught nothing; but at your command I will let down the nets."
Luke 5:6And when they had done this, they enclosed a very great multitude of fishes, and their net broke.And when they had done this, they got such a great number of fish that it seemed as if their nets would be broken;This they did, and enclosed a vast number of fish; and their nets began to break.
Luke 5:7And they beckoned to their partners that were in the other ship, that they should come and help them. And they came, and filled both the ships, so that they were almost sinking.And they made signs to their friends in the other boat to come to their help. And they came, and the two boats were so full that they were going down.So they signalled to their partners in the other boat to come and help them; they came, and they filled both the boats so that they almost sank.
Luke 5:8Which when Simon Peter saw, he fell down at Jesus' knees, saying: Depart from me, for I am a sinful man, O Lord.But Simon, when he saw it, went down at the knees of Jesus and said, Go away from me, O Lord, for I am a sinner.When Simon Peter saw this, he fell down at the knees of Jesus, and exclaimed, "Master, leave my boat, for I am a sinful man."
Luke 5:9For he was wholly astonished, and all that were with him, at the draught of the fishes which they had taken.For he was full of wonder and so were all those who were with him, at the number of fish which they had taken;(For he was astonished and terrified he and all his companions at the haul of fish which they had taken;
Luke 5:10And so were also James and John the sons of Zebedee, who were Simon's partners. And Jesus saith to Simon: Fear not: from henceforth thou shalt catch men.And so were James and John, the sons of Zebedee, who were working with Simon. And Jesus said to Simon, Have no fear; from this time forward you will be a fisher of men.and so were Simon's partners James and John, the sons of Zabdi.) But Jesus replied to Simon, "Fear not: from this time you shall be a catcher of men."
Luke 5:11And having brought their ships to land, leaving all things, they followed him.And when they had got their boats to the land, they gave up everything and went after him.Then, after bringing their boats to land, they left everything and followed Him.
Luke 5:12And it came to pass, when he was ina certain city, behold a man full of leprosy, who seeing Jesus, and falling on his face, besought him, saying: Lord, if thou wilt, thou canst make me clean.And it came about that while he was in one of the towns, there was a leper there: and when he saw Jesus he went down on his face in prayer to him, saying, Lord, if it is your pleasure, you have power to make me clean.On another occasion, when He was in one of the towns, there was a man there covered with leprosy, who, seeing Jesus, threw himself at His feet and implored Him, saying, "Sir, if only you are willing, you are able to make me clean."
Luke 5:13And stretching forth his hand, he touched him, saying: I will. Be thou cleansed. And immediately the leprosy departed from him.And he put out his hand to him and said, It is my pleasure; be clean. And straight away his disease went from him.Reaching out His hand and touching him, Jesus said, "I am willing; be cleansed!" And instantly the leprosy left him.
Luke 5:14And he charged him that he should tell no man, but, Go, shew thyself to the priest, and offer for thy cleansing according as Moses commanded, for a testimony to them.And he gave him orders: Say nothing to any man, but let the priest see you and give an offering so that you may be made clean, as the law of Moses says, and for a witness to them.He ordered him to tell no one. "But go," He said, "show yourself to the Priest, and make the offering for your purification which Moses appointed, as evidence for them."
Luke 5:15But the fame of him went abroad the more, and great multitudes came together to hear, and to be healed by him of their infirmities.But news of him went out all the more, in every direction, and great numbers of people came together to give hearing to his words and to be made well from their diseases.But all the more the report about Him spread abroad, and great multitudes crowded to hear Him and to be cured of their diseases;
Luke 5:16And he retired into the desert, and prayed.But he went away by himself to a waste place for prayer.but Jesus Himself constantly withdrew into the Desert and there prayed.
Luke 5:17And it came to pass on a certain day, as he sat teaching, that there were also Pharisees and doctors of the law sitting by, that were come out of every town of Galilee, and Judea and Jerusalem: and the power of the Lord was to heal them.And it came about that on one of these days he was teaching; and some Pharisees and teachers of the law were seated there, who had come from every town of Galilee and Judaea and from Jerusalem; and the power of the Lord was with him, to make those who were ill free from their diseases.One day He was teaching, and there were Pharisees and teachers of the Law sitting there who had come from every village in Galilee and Judaea and from Jerusalem. And the power of the Lord was present for Him to cure people.
Luke 5:18And behold, men brought in a bed a man, who had the palsy: and they sought means to bring him in, and to lay him before him.And some men had with them, on a bed, a man who was ill, without power of moving; and they made attempts to get him in and put him before Jesus.And a party of men came carrying a palsied man on a bed, and they endeavoured to bring him in and lay him before Jesus.
Luke 5:19And when they could not find by what way they might bring him in, because of the multitude, they went up upon the roof, and let him down through the tiles with his bed into the midst before Jesus.And because of the mass of people, there was no way to get him in; so they went up on the top of the house and let him down through the roof, on his bed, into the middle in front of Jesus.But when they could find no way of doing so because of the crowd, they went up on the roof and let him down through the tiling bed and all into the midst, in front of Jesus.
Luke 5:20Whose faith when he saw, he said: Man, thy sins are forgiven thee.And seeing their faith he said, Man, you have forgiveness for your sins.He saw their faith and said to him, "Friend, your sins are forgiven."
Luke 5:21And the scribes and Pharisees began to think, saying: Who is this who speaketh blasphemies? Who can forgive sins, but God alone?And the scribes and Pharisees were having an argument, saying, Who is this, who has no respect for God? who is able to give forgiveness for sins, but God only?Then the Scribes and Pharisees began to cavil, asking, "Who is this, uttering blasphemies? Who but God alone can forgive sins?"
Luke 5:22And when Jesus knew their thoughts, answering, he said to them: What is it you think in your hearts?But Jesus, who had knowledge of their thoughts, said to them, Why are you reasoning in your hearts?Well aware of their reasonings, Jesus answered their questions by asking in turn, "What is this that you are debating in your hearts?
Luke 5:23Which is easier to say, Thy sins are forgiven thee; or to say, Arise and walk?Which is the simpler: to say, You have forgiveness for your sins; or to say, Get up and go?Which is easier? to say, `Your sins are forgiven,' or to say, `Rise and walk'?
Luke 5:24But that you may know that the Son of man hath power on earth to forgive sins, (he saith to the sick of the palsy,) I say to thee, Arise, take up thy bed, and go into thy house.But so that you may see that on earth the Son of man has authority for the forgiveness of sins, (he said to the man who was ill,) I say to you, Get up, and take up your bed, and go into your house.But to prove to you that the Son of Man has authority on earth to forgive sins" Turning to the paralytic He said, "I bid you, Rise, take up your bed, and go home."
Luke 5:25And immediately rising up before them, he took up the bed on which he lay; and he went away to his own house, glorifying God.And straight away he got up before them, and took up his bed and went away to his house giving praise to God.Instantly he stood up in their presence, took up the mattress on which he had been lying, and went away to his home, giving glory to God.
Luke 5:26And all were astonished; and they glorified God. And they were filled with fear, saying: We have seen wonderful things to day.And wonder overcame them all, and they gave glory to God; and they were full of fear, saying, We have seen strange things today.Amazement seized them all. "Glory to God!" was the abiding feeling. Yet fear flashed through their minds and they said, "We have seen strange things to-day."
Luke 5:27And after these things he went forth, and saw a publican named Levi, sitting at the receipt of custom, and he said to him: Follow me.And after these things he went out, and saw Levi, a tax-farmer, seated at the place where taxes were taken, and said to him, Come after me.After this He went out and noticed a tax-gatherer, Levi by name, sitting at the Toll office; and He said to him, "Follow me."
Luke 5:28And leaving all things, he rose up and followed him.And giving up his business, he got up and went after him.He rose, left everything, and followed Him.
Luke 5:29And Levi made him a great feast in his own house; and there was a great company of publicans, and of others, that were at table with them.And Levi made a great feast for him in his house: and a great number of tax-farmers and others were seated at table with them.Levi also gave a great entertainment at his house in honour of Jesus, and there was a large party of tax-gatherers and others at table with them.
Luke 5:30But the Pharisees and scribes murmured, saying to his disciples: Why do you eat and drink with publicans and sinners?And the Pharisees and their scribes made protests against his disciples, saying, Why do you take food and drink with tax-farmers and sinners?This led the Pharisees and Scribes of their party to expostulate with His disciples and ask, "Why are you eating and drinking with these tax-gatherers and notorious sinners?"
Luke 5:31And Jesus answering, said to them: They that are whole, need not the physician: but they that are sick.And Jesus, answering, said to them, Those who are well have no need of a medical man, but those who are ill.But Jesus replied to them, "It is not men in good health who require a physician, but the sick.
Luke 5:32I came not to call the just, but sinners to penance.I have come, not to get the upright, but sinners, so that they may be turned from their sins.I have not come to call the righteous to repentance, but sinners."
Luke 5:33And they said to him: Why do the disciples of John fast often, and make prayers, and the disciples of the Pharisees in like manner; but thine eat and drink?And they said to him, The disciples of John frequently go without food, and make prayers, and so do the disciples of the Pharisees; but your disciples take food and drink.Again they said to Him, "John's disciples fast often and pray, as do also those of the pharisees; but yours eat and drink."
Luke 5:34To whom he said: Can you make the children of the bridegroom fast, whilst the bridegroom is with them?And Jesus said, Are you able to make the friends of the newly-married man go without food when he is with them?"Can you compel the bridal party to fast," replied Jesus, "so long as they have the bridegroom among them?
Luke 5:35But the days will come, when the bridegroom shall be taken away from them, then shall they fast in those days.But the days will come when he will be taken away from them, and then they will go without food.But a time for this will come, when the Bridegroom has been taken away from them: then, at that time, they will fast."
Luke 5:36And he spoke also a similitude to them: That no man putteth a piece from a new garment upon an old garment; otherwise he both rendeth the new, and the piece taken from the new agreeth not with the old.And he said to them, in a story, No man takes a bit of cloth from a new coat and puts it on to an old coat, for so the new coat would be damaged and the bit from the new would not go well with the old.He also spoke in figurative language to them. "No one," He said, "tears a piece from a new garment to mend an old one. Otherwise he would not only spoil the new, but the patch from the new would not match the old.
Luke 5:37And no man putteth new wine into old bottle: otherwise the new wine will break the bottles, and it will be spilled, and the bottles will be lost.And no man puts new wine into old wine-skins, for fear that the skins will be burst by the new wine, and the wine be let out, and the skins come to destruction.Nor does any one pour new wine into old wine-skins. Otherwise the new wine would burst the skins, the wine itself would be spilt, and the skins be destroyed.
Luke 5:38But new wine must be put into new bottles; and both are preserved.But new wine has to be put into new wine-skins.But new wine must be put into fresh wineskins.
Luke 5:39And no man drinking old, hath presently a mind to new: for he saith, The old is better.And no man, having had old wine, has any desire for new, for he says, The old is better.Nor does any one after drinking old wine wish for new; for he says, `The old is better.'"
