Matthew 2:1 | When Jesus therefore was born in Bethlehem of Juda, in the days of king Herod, behold, there came wise men from the east to Jerusalem. | Now when the birth of Jesus took place in Beth-lehem of Judaea, in the days of Herod the king, there came wise men from the east to Jerusalem, | Now after the birth of Jesus, which took place at Bethlehem in Judaea in the reign of King Herod, excitement was produced in Jerusalem by the arrival of certain Magi from the east, |
Matthew 2:2 | Saying, Where is he that is born king of the Jews? For we have seen his star in the east, and are come to adore him. | Saying, Where is the King of the Jews whose birth has now taken place? We have seen his star in the east and have come to give him worship. | inquiring, "Where is the newly born king of the Jews? For we have seen his Star in the east, and have come here to do him homage." |
Matthew 2:3 | And king Herod hearing this, was troubled, and all Jerusalem with him. | And when it came to the ears of Herod the king, he was troubled, and all Jerusalem with him. | Reports of this soon reached the king, and greatly agitated not only him but all the people of Jerusalem. |
Matthew 2:4 | And assembling together all the chief priests and the scribes of the people, he inquired of them where Christ should be born. | And he got together all the chief priests and scribes of the people, questioning them as to where the birth-place of the Christ would be. | So he assembled all the High Priests and Scribes of the people, and anxiously asked them where the Christ was to be born. |
Matthew 2:5 | But they said to him: In Bethlehem of Juda. For so it is written by the prophet: | And they said to him, In Beth-lehem of Judaea; for so it is said in the writings of the prophet, | "At Bethlehem in Judaea," they replied; "for so it stands written in the words of the Prophet, |
Matthew 2:6 | And thou Bethlehem the land of Juda art not the least among the princes of Juda: for out of thee shall come forth the captain that shall rule my people Israel. | You Beth-lehem, in the land of Judah, are not the least among the chiefs of Judah: out of you will come a ruler, who will be the keeper of my people Israel. | "`And thou, Bethlehem in the land of Judah, by no means the least honorable art thou among princely places in Judah! For from thee shall come a prince one who shall be the Shepherd of My People Israel.'" |
Matthew 2:7 | Then Herod, privately calling the wise men, learned diligently of them the time of the star which appeared to them; | Then Herod sent for the wise men privately, and put questions to them about what time the star had been seen. | Thereupon Herod sent privately for the Magi and ascertained from them the exact time of the star's appearing. |
Matthew 2:8 | And sending them into Bethlehem, said: Go and diligently inquire after the child, and when you have found him, bring me word again, that I also may come to adore him. | And he sent them to Beth-lehem and said, Go and make certain where the young child is; and when you have seen him, let me have news of it, so that I may come and give him worship. | He then directed them to go to Bethlehem, adding, "Go and make careful inquiry about the child, and when you have found him, bring me word, that I too may come and do him homage." |
Matthew 2:9 | Who having heard the king, went their way; and behold the star which they had seen in the east, went before them, until it came and stood over where the child was. | And after hearing the king, they went on their way; and the star which they saw in the east went before them, till it came to rest over the place where the young child was. | After hearing what the king said, they went to Bethlehem, while, strange to say, the star they had seen in the east led them on until it came and stood over the place where the babe was. |
Matthew 2:10 | And seeing the star they rejoiced with exceeding great joy. | And when they saw the star they were full of joy. | When they saw the star, the sight filled them with intense joy. |
Matthew 2:11 | And entering into the house, they found the child with Mary his mother, and falling down they adored him; and opening their treasures, they offered him gifts; gold, frankincense, and myrrh. | And they came into the house, and saw the young child with Mary, his mother; and falling down on their faces they gave him worship; and from their store they gave him offerings of gold, perfume, and spices. | So they entered the house; and when they saw the babe with His mother Mary, they prostrated themselves and did Him homage, and opening their treasure-chests offered gifts to Him gold, frankincense, and myrrh. |
Matthew 2:12 | And having received an answer in sleep that they should not return to Herod, they went back another way into their country. | And it was made clear to them by God in a dream that they were not to go back to Herod; so they went into their country by another way. | But being forbidden by God in a dream to return to Herod, they went back to their own country by a different route. |
Matthew 2:13 | And after they were departed, behold an angel of the Lord appeared in sleep to Joseph, saying: Arise, and take the child and his mother, and fly into Egypt: and be there until I shall tell thee. For it will come to pass that Herod will seek the child to destroy him. | And when they had gone, an angel of the Lord came to Joseph in a dream, saying, Get up and take the young child and his mother, and go into Egypt, and do not go from there till I give you word; for Herod will be searching for the young child to put him to death. | When they were gone, and angel of the Lord appeared to Joseph in a dream and said, "Rise: take the babe and His mother and escape to Egypt, and remain there till I bring you word. For Herod is about to make search for the child in order to destroy Him." |
Matthew 2:14 | Who arose, and took the child and his mother by night, and retired into Egypt: and he was there until the death of Herod: | So he took the young child and his mother by night, and went into Egypt; | So Joseph roused himself and took the babe and His mother by night and departed into Egypt. |
Matthew 2:15 | That it might be fulfilled which the Lord spoke by the prophet, saying: Out of Egypt have I called my son. | And was there till the death of Herod; so that the word of the Lord through the prophet might come true, Out of Egypt have I sent for my son. | There he remained till Herod's death, that what the Lord had said through the Prophet might be fulfilled, "Out of Egypt I called My Son." |
Matthew 2:16 | Then Herod perceiving that he was deluded by the wise men, was exceeding angry; and sending killed all the men children that were in Bethlehem, and in all the borders thereof, from two years old and under, according to the time which he had diligently inquired of the wise men. | Then Herod, when he saw that he had been tricked by the wise men, was very angry; and he sent out, and put to death all the male children in Beth-lehem and in all the parts round about it, from two years old and under, acting on the knowledge which he had got with care from the wise men. | Then Herod, finding that the Magi had trifled with him, was furious, and sent and massacred all the boys under two years of age, in Bethlehem and all its neighbourhood, according to the date he had so carefully ascertained from the Magi. |
Matthew 2:17 | Then was fulfilled that which was spoken by Jeremias the prophet, saying: | Then the word of Jeremiah the prophet came true, | Then were these words, spoken by the Prophet Jeremiah, fulfilled, |
Matthew 2:18 | A voice in Rama was heard, lamentation and great mourning; Rachel bewailing her children, and would not be comforted, because they are not. | In Ramah there was a sound of weeping and great sorrow, Rachel weeping for her children, and she would not be comforted for their loss. | "A voice was heard in Ramah, wailing and bitter lamentation: It was Rachel bewailing her children, and she refused to be comforted because there were no more." |
Matthew 2:19 | But when Herod was dead, behold an angel of the Lord appeared in sleep to Joseph in Egypt, | But when Herod was dead, an angel of the Lord came in a dream to Joseph in Egypt, | But after Herod's death an angel of the Lord appeared in a dream to Joseph in Egypt, and said to him, |
Matthew 2:20 | Saying: Arise, and take the child and his mother, and go into the land of Israel. For they are dead that sought the life of the child. | Saying, Get up and take the young child and his mother, and go into the land of Israel: because they who were attempting to take the young child's life are dead. | "Rise from sleep, and take the child and His mother, and go into the land of Israel, for those who were seeking the child's life are dead." |
Matthew 2:21 | Who arose, and took the child and his mother, and came into the land of Israel. | And he got up, and took the young child and his mother, and came into the land of Israel. | So he roused himself and took the child and His mother and came into the land of Israel. |
Matthew 2:22 | But hearing that Archelaus reigned in Judea in the room of Herod his father, he was afraid to go thither: and being warned in sleep retired into the quarters of Galilee. | But when it came to his ears that Archelaus was ruling over Judaea in the place of his father Herod, he was in fear of going there; and God having given him news of the danger in a dream, he went out of the way into the country parts of Galilee. | But hearing that Archelaus had succeeded his father Herod on the throne of Judaea, he was afraid to go there; and being instructed by God in a dream he withdrew into Galilee, |
Matthew 2:23 | And coming he dwelt in a city called Nazareth: that it might be fulfilled which was said by prophets: That he shall be called a Nazarene. | And he came and was living in a town named Nazareth: so that the word of the prophets might come true, He will be named a Nazarene. | and went and settled in a town called Nazareth, in order that these words spoken through the Prophets might be fulfilled, "He shall be called a Nazarene." |
