Deuteronomy 14:1 | Be ye children of the Lord your God: you shall not cut yourselves, no, make any baldness for the dead; | You are the children of the Lord your God: you are not to make cuts on your bodies or take off the hair on your brows in honour of the dead; | You are the children of Yahweh your God: you shall not cut yourselves, nor make any baldness between your eyes for the dead. |
Deuteronomy 14:2 | Because thou art a holy people to the Lord thy God: and he chose thee to be his peculiar people of all nations that are upon the earth. | For you are a holy people to the Lord your God, and the Lord has taken you to be his special people out of all the nations on the face of the earth. | For you are a holy people to Yahweh your God, and Yahweh has chosen you to be a people for his own possession, above all peoples who are on the face of the earth. |
Deuteronomy 14:3 | Eat not the things that are unclean. | No disgusting thing may be your food. | You shall not eat any abominable thing. |
Deuteronomy 14:4 | These are the beasts that you shall eat, the ox, and the sheep, and the goat, | These are the beasts which you may have for food: the ox, the sheep, and the goat; | These are the animals which you may eat: the ox, the sheep, and the goat, |
Deuteronomy 14:5 | The hart and the roe, the buffle, the chamois, the pygarg, the wild goat, the camelopardalus. | The hart, the gazelle, and the roe, the mountain goat and the pygarg and the antelope and the mountain sheep. | the hart, and the gazelle, and the roebuck, and the wild goat, and the gazelle, and the antelope, and the chamois. |
Deuteronomy 14:6 | Every beast that divideth the hoof in two parts, and cheweth the cud, you shall eat. | Any beast which has a division in the horn of its foot and whose food comes back into its mouth to be crushed again, may be used for food. | Every animal that parts the hoof, and has the hoof cloven in two, [and] chews the cud, among the animals, that may you eat. |
Deuteronomy 14:7 | But of them that chew the cud, but divide not the hoof, you shall not eat, such as the camel, the hare, and the cherogril: because they chew the cud, but divide not the hoof, they shall be unclean to you. | But even among these, there are some which may not be used for food: such as the camel, the hare, and the coney, which are unclean to you, because, though their food comes back, the horn of their feet is not parted in two. | Nevertheless these you shall not eat of them that chew the cud, or of those who have the hoof cloven: the camel, and the hare, and the rabbit; because they chew the cud but don't part the hoof, they are unclean to you. |
Deuteronomy 14:8 | The swine also, because it divideth the hoof, but cheweth not the cud, shall be unclean, their flesh you shall not eat, and their carcasses you shall not touch. | And the pig is unclean to you, because though it has a division in the horn of its foot, its food does not come back; their flesh may not be used for food or their dead bodies touched by you. | The pig, because he doesn't part the hoof but doesn't chew the cud, he is unclean to you: of their flesh you shall not eat, and their carcasses you shall not touch. |
Deuteronomy 14:9 | These shall you eat of all that abide in the waters: All that have fins and scales, you shall eat. | And of the things living in the waters, you may take all those who have wings for swimming with and skins formed of thin plates. | These you may eat of all that are in the waters: whatever has fins and scales may you eat; |
Deuteronomy 14:10 | Such as are without fins and scales, you shall not eat, because they are unclean. | But any which have no skin-plates or wings for swimming, you may not take; they are unclean for you. | and whatever doesn't have fins and scales you shall not eat; it is unclean to you. |
Deuteronomy 14:11 | All birds that are clean you shall eat. | All clean birds may be used for food. | Of all clean birds you may eat. |
Deuteronomy 14:12 | The unclean eat not: to wit, the eagle, and the grype, and the osprey, | But these birds you may not take: the eagle and the gier-eagle and the ospray; | But these are they of which you shall not eat: the eagle, and the gier-eagle, and the ospray, |
Deuteronomy 14:13 | The ringtail, and the vulture, and the kite according to their kind: | The falcon and the kite, and birds of that sort; | and the red kite, and the falcon, and the kite after its kind, |
Deuteronomy 14:14 | And all of the raven's kind: | Every raven, and all birds of that sort; | and every raven after its kind, |
Deuteronomy 14:15 | And the ostrich, and the owl, and the larus, and the hawk according to its kind: | And the ostrich and the night-hawk and the sea-hawk and birds of that sort; | and the ostrich, and the night-hawk, and the sea-mew, and the hawk after its kind, |
Deuteronomy 14:16 | The heron, and the swan, and the stork, | The little owl and the great owl and the water-hen; | the little owl, and the great owl, and the horned owl, |
Deuteronomy 14:17 | And the cormorant, the porphirion, and the night crow, | And the pelican and the vulture and the cormorant; | and the pelican, and the vulture, and the cormorant, |
Deuteronomy 14:18 | The bittern, and the charadrion, every one in their kind: the hoop also and the bat. | The stork and the heron and birds of that sort, and the hoopoe and the bat. | and the stork, and the heron after its kind, and the hoopoe, and the bat. |
Deuteronomy 14:19 | Every thing that creepeth, and hath little wings, shall be unclean, and shall not be eaten. | Every winged thing which goes flat on the earth is unclean to you and may not be used as food. | All winged creeping things are unclean to you: they shall not be eaten. |
Deuteronomy 14:20 | All that is clean, you shall eat. | But all clean birds you may take. | Of all clean birds you may eat. |
Deuteronomy 14:21 | But whatsoever is dead of itself, eat not thereof. Give it to the stranger, that is within thy gates, to eat, or sell it to him: because thou art the holy people of the Lord thy God. Thou shalt not boil a kid in the milk of his dam. | You may not have as food anything which has come to a natural death; the man from another country who is living with you may take it for food, or you may get a price for it from one of another nation; for you are a holy people to the Lord your God. The young goat is not to be cooked in its mother's milk. | You shall not eat of anything that dies of itself: you may give it to the sojourner who is within your gates, that he may eat it; or you may sell it to a foreigner: for you are a holy people to Yahweh your God. You shall not boil a kid in its mother's milk. |
Deuteronomy 14:22 | Every year thou shalt set aside the tithes of all thy fruits that the earth bringeth forth, | Put on one side a tenth of all the increase of your seed, produced year by year. | You shall surely tithe all the increase of your seed, that which comes forth from the field year by year. |
Deuteronomy 14:23 | And thou shalt eat before the Lord thy God in the place which he shall choose, that his name may be called upon therein, the tithe of thy corn, and thy wine, and thy oil, and the firstborn of thy herds and thy sheep: that thou mayst learn to fear the Lord thy God at all times. | And make a feast before the Lord your God, in the place which is to be marked out, where his name will be for ever, of the tenth part of your grain and your wine and your oil, and the first births of your herds and your flocks; so that you may have the fear of the Lord your God in your hearts at all times. | You shall eat before Yahweh your God, in the place which he shall choose, to cause his name to dwell there, the tithe of your grain, of your new wine, and of your oil, and the firstborn of your herd and of your flock; that you may learn to fear Yahweh your God always. |
Deuteronomy 14:24 | But when the way and the place which the Lord thy God shall choose, are far off, and he hath blessed thee, and thou canst not carry all these things thither, | And if the way is so long that you are not able to take these things to the place marked out by the Lord your God for his name, when he has given you his blessing, because it is far away from you; | If the way be too long for you, so that you are not able to carry it, because the place is too far from you, which Yahweh your God shall choose, to set his name there, when Yahweh your God shall bless you; |
Deuteronomy 14:25 | Thou shalt sell them all, and turn them into money, and shalt carry it in thy hand, and shalt go to the place which the Lord shall choose : | Then let these things be exchanged for money, and, taking the money in your hand, go to the place marked out by the Lord your God for himself; | then shall you turn it into money, and bind up the money in your hand, and shall go to the place which Yahweh your God shall choose: |
Deuteronomy 14:26 | And thou shalt buy with the same money whatsoever pleaseth thee, either of the herds or of sheep, wine also and strong drink, and all that thy soul desireth: and thou shalt eat before the Lord thy God, and shalt feast, thou and thy house: | And with the money get whatever you have a desire for, oxen or sheep or wine or strong drink, whatever your soul's desire may be: and make a feast there before the Lord your God, and be glad, you and all your house; | and you shall bestow the money for whatever your soul desires, for oxen, or for sheep, or for wine, or for strong drink, or for whatever your soul asks of you; and you shall eat there before Yahweh your God, and you shall rejoice, you and your household. |
Deuteronomy 14:27 | And the Levite that is within thy gates, beware thou forsake him not, because he hath no other part in thy possession. | And give a thought to the Levite who is living among you, for he has no part or heritage in the land. | The Levite who is within your gates, you shall not forsake him; for he has no portion nor inheritance with you. |
Deuteronomy 14:28 | The third year thou shalt separate another tithe of all things that grow to thee at that time, and shalt lay it up within thy gates. | At the end of every three years take a tenth part of all your increase for that year, and put it in store inside your walls: | At the end of every three years you shall bring forth all the tithe of your increase in the same year, and shall lay it up within your gates: |
Deuteronomy 14:29 | And the Levite that hath no other part nor possession with thee, and the stranger and the fatherless and the widow, that are within thy gates, shall come and shall eat and be filled: that the Lord thy God may bless thee in all the works of thy hands that thou shalt do. | And the Levite, because he has no part or heritage in the land, and the man from a strange country, and the child who has no father, and the widow, who are living among you, will come and take food and have enough; and so the blessing of the Lord your God will be on you in everything you do. | and the Levite, because he has no portion nor inheritance with you, and the sojourner, and the fatherless, and the widow, who are within your gates, shall come, and shall eat and be satisfied; that Yahweh your God may bless you in all the work of your hand which you do. |
