Deuteronomy 9:1 | Hear, O Israel: Thou shalt go over the Jordan this day; to possess nations very great, and stronger than thyself, cities great, and walled up to the sky, | Give ear, O Israel: today you are to go over Jordan, to take the heritage of nations greater and stronger than yourselves, and towns of great size with walls as high as heaven; | Hear, Israel: you are to pass over the Jordan this day, to go in to dispossess nations greater and mightier than yourself, cities great and fortified up to the sky, |
Deuteronomy 9:2 | A People great and tall, the sons of the Enacims, whom thou hast seen, and heard of, against whom no man is able to stand. | A people great and tall, the sons of the Anakim, of whom you have knowledge and of whom it has been said, All are forced to give way before the sons of Anak. | a people great and tall, the sons of the Anakim, whom you know, and of whom you have heard say, Who can stand before the sons of Anak? |
Deuteronomy 9:3 | Thou shalt know therefore this day that the Lord thy God himself will pass over before thee, a devouring and consuming fire, to destroy and extirpate and bring them to nothing before thy face quickly, as he hath spoken to thee. | Be certain then today that it is the Lord your God who goes over before you like an all-burning fire; he will send destruction on them, crushing them before you; and you will send them in flight, putting an end to them quickly, as the Lord has said. | Know therefore this day, that Yahweh your God is he who goes over before you as a devouring fire; he will destroy them, and he will bring them down before you: so shall you drive them out, and make them to perish quickly, as Yahweh has spoken to you. |
Deuteronomy 9:4 | Say not in thy heart, when the Lord thy God shall have destroyed them in thy sight: For my justice hath the Lord brought me in to possess this land, whereas these nations are destroyed for their wickedness. | And after the Lord has sent them in flight from before you, say not in your heart, Because of my righteousness the Lord has given me this land; when it is because of their evil-doing that the Lord is driving these nations out before you. | Don't speak in your heart, after that Yahweh your God has thrust them out from before you, saying, For my righteousness Yahweh has brought me in to possess this land; whereas for the wickedness of these nations Yahweh does drive them out from before you. |
Deuteronomy 9:5 | For it is not for thy justices, and the uprightness of thy heart that thou shalt go in to possess their lands: but because they have done wickedly, they are destroyed at thy coming in: and that the Lord might accomplish his word, which he promised by oath to thy fathers Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob. | Not for your righteousness or because your hearts are upright are you going in to take their land; but because of the evil-doing of these nations the Lord your God is driving them out from before you, and to give effect to his oath to your fathers, Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob. | Not for your righteousness, or for the uprightness of your heart, do you go in to possess their land; but for the wickedness of these nations Yahweh your God does drive them out from before you, and that he may establish the word which Yahweh swore to your fathers, to Abraham, to Isaac, and to Jacob. |
Deuteronomy 9:6 | Know therefore that the Lord thy God giveth thee not this excellent land in possession for thy justices, for thou art a very stiffnecked people. | Be certain then that the Lord your God is not giving you this good land as a reward for your righteousness; for you are a stiff-necked people. | Know therefore, that Yahweh your God doesn't give you this good land to possess it for your righteousness; for you are a stiff-necked people. |
Deuteronomy 9:7 | Remember, and forget not how then provokedst the Lord thy God to wrath in the wilderness. From the day that thou camest out of Egypt unto this place, thou hast always strove against the Lord. | Keep well in mind how you made the Lord your God angry in the waste land; from the day when you went out of Egypt till you came to this place, you have gone against the orders of the Lord. | Remember, don't forget, how you provoked Yahweh your God to wrath in the wilderness: from the day that you went forth out of the land of Egypt, until you came to this place, you have been rebellious against Yahweh. |
Deuteronomy 9:8 | For in Horeb also thou didst provoke him, and he was angry, and would have destroyed thee, | Again in Horeb you made the Lord angry, and in his wrath he would have put an end to you. | Also in Horeb you provoked Yahweh to wrath, and Yahweh was angry with you to destroy you. |
Deuteronomy 9:9 | When I went up into the mount to receive the tables of stone, the tables of the covenant which the Lord made with you: and I continued in the mount forty days and nights, neither eating bread, nor drinking water. | When I had gone up into the mountain to be given the stones on which was recorded the agreement which the Lord made with you, I was on the mountain for forty days and forty nights without taking food or drinking water. | When I was gone up onto the mountain to receive the tables of stone, even the tables of the covenant which Yahweh made with you, then I stayed on the mountain forty days and forty nights; I did neither eat bread nor drink water. |
Deuteronomy 9:10 | And the Lord gave me two tables of stone written with the finger of God, and containing all the words that he spoke to you in the mount from the midst of the Are, when the people were assembled together. | And the Lord gave me the two stones with writing on them done by the finger of God: on them were recorded all the words which the Lord said to you on the mountain out of the heart of the fire, on the day of the great meeting. | Yahweh delivered to me the two tables of stone written with the finger of God; and on them [was written] according to all the words, which Yahweh spoke with you on the mountain out of the midst of the fire in the day of the assembly. |
Deuteronomy 9:11 | And when forty days were passed, and as many nights, the Lord gave me the two tables of stone, the tables of the covenant, | Then at the end of forty days and forty nights the Lord gave me those stones, the stones of the agreement. | It came to pass at the end of forty days and forty nights, that Yahweh gave me the two tables of stone, even the tables of the covenant. |
Deuteronomy 9:12 | And said to me: Arise, and go down from hence quickly: for thy people, which thou hast brought out of Egypt, have quickly forsaken the way that thou hast shewn them, and have made to themselves a molten idol. | And the Lord said to me, Get up now, and go down quickly from this place; for the people you have taken out of Egypt have given themselves over to evil; they have quickly been turned from the way in which I gave them orders to go; they have made themselves a metal image. | Yahweh said to me, Arise, get you down quickly from hence; for your people whom you have brought forth out of Egypt have corrupted themselves; they have quickly turned aside out of the way which I commanded them; they have made them a molten image. |
Deuteronomy 9:13 | And again the Lord said to me: I see that this people is stiffnecked: | And then the Lord said to me, I have seen that this people is stiff-necked: | Furthermore Yahweh spoke to me, saying, I have seen this people, and, behold, it is a stiff-necked people: |
Deuteronomy 9:14 | Let me alone that I may destroy them, and abolish their name from under heaven, and set thee over a nation, that is greater and stronger than this. | Let me send destruction on them till their very name is cut off; and I will make of you a nation greater and stronger than they. | let me alone, that I may destroy them, and blot out their name from under the sky; and I will make of you a nation mightier and greater than they. |
Deuteronomy 9:15 | And when I came down from the burning mount, and held the two tables of the covenant with both hands, | So turning round I came down from the mountain, and the mountain was burning with fire; and the two stones of the agreement were in my hands. | So I turned and came down from the mountain, and the mountain was burning with fire: and the two tables of the covenant were in my two hands. |
Deuteronomy 9:16 | And saw that you had sinned against the Lord your God, and had made to yourselves a molten calf, and had quickly forsaken his way, which he had shewn you: | And I saw that you had done evil against the Lord, and had made for yourselves a metal image of a young ox: you had quickly been turned from the way in which the Lord had given you orders to go. | I looked, and, behold, you had sinned against Yahweh your God; you had made you a molten calf: you had turned aside quickly out of the way which Yahweh had commanded you. |
Deuteronomy 9:17 | I cast the tables out of my hands, and broke them in your sight. | And I let the stones go from my hands, and they were broken before your eyes. | I took hold of the two tables, and cast them out of my two hands, and broke them before your eyes. |
Deuteronomy 9:18 | And I fell down before the Lord se before, forty days and nights neither eating bread, nor drinking water, for all your sins, which you had committed against the Lord, and had provoked him to wrath: | And I went down on my face before the Lord, as at the first, for forty days and forty nights, without taking food or drinking water, because of all your sin, in doing evil in the eyes of the Lord and moving him to wrath. | I fell down before Yahweh, as at the first, forty days and forty nights; I did neither eat bread nor drink water; because of all your sin which you sinned, in doing that which was evil in the sight of Yahweh, to provoke him to anger. |
Deuteronomy 9:19 | For I feared his indignation and anger, wherewith being moved against you, he would have destroyed you. And the Lord heard me this time also. | For I was full of fear because of the wrath of the Lord which was burning against you, with your destruction in view. But again the Lord's ear was open to my prayer. | For I was afraid of the anger and hot displeasure, with which Yahweh was angry against you to destroy you. But Yahweh listened to me that time also. |
Deuteronomy 9:20 | And he was exceeding angry against Aaron also, and would have destroyed him, and I prayed in like manner for him. | And the Lord, in his wrath, would have put Aaron to death: and I made prayer for Aaron at the same time. | Yahweh was very angry with Aaron to destroy him: and I prayed for Aaron also at the same time. |
Deuteronomy 9:21 | And your sin that you had committed, that is, the calf, I took, and burned it with fire, and breaking it into pieces, until it was as small as dust, I threw it into the torrent, which cometh down from the mountain. | And I took your sin, the image which you had made, and put it in the fire and had it hammered and crushed very small till it was only dust: and the dust I put in the stream flowing down from the mountain. | I took your sin, the calf which you had made, and burnt it with fire, and stamped it, grinding it very small, until it was as fine as dust: and I cast the dust of it into the brook that descended out of the mountain. |
Deuteronomy 9:22 | At the burning also, and at the place of temptation, and at the graves of lust you provoked the Lord: | Again at Taberah and at Massah and at Kibroth-hattaavah you made the Lord angry. | At Taberah, and at Massah, and at Kibroth-hattaavah, you provoked Yahweh to wrath. |
Deuteronomy 9:23 | And when he sent you from Cadesbarne, saying: Go up, and possess the land that I have given you, and you slighted the commandment of the Lord your God, and did not believe him, neither would you hearken to his voice: | And when the Lord sent you from Kadesh-barnea, saying, Go up and take the land which I have given you; you went against the orders of the Lord your God, and had no faith in him, and would not give ear to his voice. | When Yahweh sent you from Kadesh-barnea, saying, Go up and possess the land which I have given you; then you rebelled against the commandment of Yahweh your God, and you didn't believe him, nor listen to his voice. |
Deuteronomy 9:24 | But were always rebellious from the day that I began to know you. | From the day when I first had knowledge of you, you have gone against the word of the Lord. | You have been rebellious against Yahweh from the day that I knew you. |
Deuteronomy 9:25 | And I lay prostrate before the Lord forty days and nights, in which I humbly besought him, that he would not destroy you as he had threatened: | So I went down on my face in prayer before the Lord for forty days and forty nights as I did at first; because the Lord had said that he would put an end to you. | So I fell down before Yahweh the forty days and forty nights that I fell down, because Yahweh had said he would destroy you. |
Deuteronomy 9:26 | And praying, I said: 0 Lord God, destroy not thy people, and thy inheritance, which thou hast redeemed in thy greatness, whom thou hast brought out of Egypt with a strong hand. | And I made prayer to the Lord and said, O Lord God, do not send destruction on your people and your heritage, to whom, by your great power, you have given salvation, whom you have taken out of Egypt by the strength of your hand. | I prayed to Yahweh, and said, Lord Yahweh, don't destroy your people and your inheritance, that you have redeemed through your greatness, that you have brought forth out of Egypt with a mighty hand. |
Deuteronomy 9:27 | Remember thy servants Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob: look not on the stubbornness of this people, nor on their wickedness and sin: | Keep in mind your servants, Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob, not looking at the hard heart of this people, or their evil-doing and their sin: | Remember your servants, Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob; don't look to the stubbornness of this people, nor to their wickedness, nor to their sin, |
Deuteronomy 9:28 | Lest perhaps the inhabitants of the land, out of which thou hast brought us, say: The Lord could not bring them into the land that he promised them, and he hated them: therefore he brought them out, that he might kill them in the wilderness, | Or it may be said in the land from which you have taken them, Because the Lord was not able to take them into the land which he said he would give them, and because of his hate for them, he has taken them out to put them to death in the waste land. | lest the land whence you brought us out say, Because Yahweh was not able to bring them into the land which he promised to them, and because he hated them, he has brought them out to kill them in the wilderness. |
Deuteronomy 9:29 | Who are thy people and thy inheritance, whom thou hast brought out by thy great strength, and in thy stretched out arm. | But still they are your people and your heritage, whom you took out by your great power and by your stretched-out arm. | Yet they are your people and your inheritance, which you brought out by your great power and by your outstretched arm. |
