Joel 1:1The word of the Lord that came to Joel the son of Phatuel. The word of Jehovah that came to Joel the son of Pethuel. The word of the Lord which came to Joel, the son of Pethuel.
Joel 1:2Hear this, ye old men, and give ear, all ye inhabitants of the land: did this ever happen in your days, or in the days of your fathers?Hear this, ye old men, and give ear, all ye inhabitants of the land. Hath this been in your days, or even in the days of your fathers?Give ear to this, you old men, and take note, you people of the land. Has this ever been in your days, or in the days of your fathers?
Joel 1:3Tell ye of this to your children, and let your children tell their children, and their children to another generation.Tell your children of it, and [let] your children [tell] their children, and their children another generation:Give the story of it to your children, and let them give it to their children, and their children to another generation.
Joel 1:4That which the palmerworm hath left, the locust hath eaten: and that which the locust hath left, the bruchus hath eaten: and that which the bruchus hath left, the mildew hath destroyed.that which the palmer-worm hath left hath the locust eaten; and that which the locust hath left hath the cankerworm eaten; and that which the cankerworm hath left hath the caterpillar eaten. What the worm did not make a meal of, has been taken by the locust; and what the locust did not take, has been food for the plant-worm; and what the plant-worm did not take, has been food for the field-fly.
Joel 1:5Awake, ye that are drunk, and weep, and mourn all ye that take delight in drinking sweet wine: for it is cut off from your mouth.Awake, ye drunkards, and weep; and howl, all ye drinkers of wine, because of the new wine: for it is cut off from your mouth.Come out of your sleep, you who are overcome with wine, and give yourselves to weeping; give cries of sorrow, all you drinkers of wine, because of the sweet wine; for it has been cut off from your mouths.
Joel 1:6For a nation is come up upon my land, strong and without number: his teeth are like the teeth of a lion: and his cheek teeth as of a lion's whelp. For a nation is come up upon my land, strong and without number: his teeth are the teeth of a lion, and he hath the cheek teeth of a lioness. For a nation has come up over my land, strong and without number; his teeth are the teeth of a lion, and he has the back teeth of a great lion.
Joel 1:7He hath laid my vineyard waste, and hath pilled off the bark of my fig tree: he hath stripped it bare, and cast it away; the branches thereof are made white. He hath made my vine a desolation, and barked my fig-tree; he hath made it clean bare, and cast it away: its branches are made white.By him my vine is made waste and my fig-tree broken: he has taken all its fruit and sent it down to the earth; its branches are made white.
Joel 1:8Lament like a virgin girded with sackcloth for the husband of her youth.Wail like a virgin girded with sackcloth for the husband of her youth.Make sounds of grief like a virgin dressed in haircloth for the husband of her early years.
Joel 1:9Sacrifice and libation is cut off from the house of the Lord: the priests, the Lord's ministers, have mourned:The oblation and the drink-offering are cut off from the house of Jehovah; the priests, Jehovah's ministers, mourn. The meal offering and the drink offering have been cut off from the house of the Lord; the priests, the Lord's servants, are sorrowing.
Joel 1:10The country is destroyed, the ground hath mourned: for the corn is wasted, the wine is confounded, the oil hath languished. The field is laid waste, the land mourneth; for the corn is wasted, the new wine is dried up, the oil languisheth. The fields are wasted, the land has become dry; for the grain is wasted, the new wine is kept back, the oil is poor.
Joel 1:11The husbandmen are ashamed, the vinedressers have howled for the wheat, and for the barley, because the harvest of the field is perished.Be ashamed, ye husbandmen; howl, ye vinedressers, for the wheat and for the barley: because the harvest of the field hath perished. The farmers are shamed, the workers in the vine-gardens give cries of grief, for the wheat and the barley; for the produce of the fields has come to destruction.
Joel 1:12The vineyard is confounded, and the fig tree hath languished: the pomegranate tree, and the palm tree, and the apple tree, and all the trees of the field are withered: because joy is withdrawn from the children of men.The vine is dried up, and the fig-tree languisheth; the pomegranate-tree, the palm also and the apple-tree; all the trees of the field are withered, yea, joy is withered away from the children of men.The vine has become dry and the fig-tree is feeble; the pomegranate and the palm-tree and the apple-tree, even all the trees of the field, are dry: because joy has gone from the sons of men.
Joel 1:13Gird yourselves, and lament, O ye priests, howl, ye ministers of the altars: go in, lie in sackcloth, ye ministers of my God: because sacrifice and libation is cut off from the house of your God.Gird yourselves, and lament, ye priests; howl, ministers of the altar; come, lie all night in sackcloth, ye ministers of my God: for the oblation and the drink-offering are withholden from the house of your God.Put haircloth round you and give yourselves to sorrow, you priests; give cries of grief, you servants of the altar: come in, and, clothed in haircloth, let the night go past, you servants of my God: for the meal offering and the drink offering have been kept back from the house of your God.
Joel 1:14Sanctify ye a fast, call an assembly; gather together the ancients, all the inhabitants of the land into the house of your God: and cry ye to the Lord:Hallow a fast, proclaim a solemn assembly, gather the elders, [and] all the inhabitants of the land to the house of Jehovah your God, and cry unto Jehovah.Let a time be fixed for going without food, have a holy meeting, let the old men, even all the people of the land, come together to the house of the Lord your God, crying out to the Lord.
Joel 1:15Ah, ah, ah, for the day: because the day of the Lord is at hand, and it shall come like destruction from the mighty.Alas for the day! for the day of Jehovah is at hand, and as destruction from the Almighty shall it come.Sorrow for the day! for the day of the Lord is near, and as destruction from the Ruler of all it will come.
Joel 1:16Is not your food cut off before your eyes, joy and gladness from the house of our God?Is not the food cut off before our eyes, joy and gladness from the house of our God?Is not food cut off before our eyes? joy and delight from the house of our God?
Joel 1:17The beasts have rotted in their dung, the barns are destroyed, the storehouses are broken down: because the corn is confounded. The seeds are rotten under their clods, the granaries are laid desolate, the barns are broken down; for the corn is withered. The grains have become small and dry under the spade; the store-houses are made waste, the grain-stores are broken down; for the grain is dry and dead.
Joel 1:18Why did the beast groan, why did the herds of cattle low? because there is no pasture for them: yea, and the flocks of sheep are perished. How do the beasts groan! The herds of cattle are bewildered, for they have no pasture; the flocks of sheep also are in suffering. What sounds of pain come from the beasts! the herds of cattle are at a loss because there is no grass for them; even the flocks of sheep are no longer to be seen.
Joel 1:19To thee, 0 Lord, will I cry: because fire hath devoured the beautiful places of the wilderness, and the flame hath burnt all the trees of the country. To thee, Jehovah, do I cry; for the fire hath devoured the pastures of the wilderness, and the flame hath burned up all the trees of the field.O Lord, my cry goes up to you: for fire has put an end to the grass-lands of the waste, and all the trees of the field are burned with its flame.
Joel 1:20Yea and the beasts of the field have looked up to thee, as a garden bed that thirsteth after rain, for the springs of waters are dried up, and fire hath devoured the beautiful places of the wilderness. The beasts of the field also cry unto thee; for the water-courses are dried, and the fire hath devoured the pastures of the wilderness. The beasts of the field are turning to you with desire: for the water-streams are dry and fire has put an end to the grass-lands of the waste.
