John 19:1Then therefore, Pilate took Jesus, and scourged him. Then Pilate therefore took Jesus and scourged [him].Then Pilate took Jesus and scourged Him.
John 19:2And the soldiers platting a crown of thorns, put it upon his head; and they put on him a purple garment. And the soldiers having plaited a crown of thorns put it on his head, and put a purple robe on him,And the soldiers, twisting twigs of thorn into a wreath, put it on His head, and threw round Him a crimson cloak.
John 19:3And they came to him, and said: Hail, king of the Jews; and they gave him blows.and came to him and said, Hail, king of the Jews! and gave him blows on the face. Then they began to march up to Him, saying in a mocking voice, "Hail King of the Jews!" And they struck Him with the palms of their hands.
John 19:4Pilate therefore went forth again, and saith to them: Behold, I bring him forth unto you, that you may know that I find no cause in him.And Pilate went out again and says to them, Lo, I bring him out to you, that ye may know that I find in him no fault whatever.Once more Pilate came out and said to the Jews, "See, I am bringing him out to you to let you clearly understand that I find no crime in him."
John 19:5(Jesus therefore came forth, bearing the crown of thorns and the purple garment.) And he saith to them: Behold the Man.(Jesus therefore went forth without, wearing the crown of thorn, and the purple robe.) And he says to them, Behold the man!So Jesus came out, wearing the wreath of thorns and the crimson cloak. And Pilate said to them, "See, there is the man."
John 19:6When the chief priests, therefore, and the servants, had seen him, they cried out, saying: Crucify him, crucify him. Pilate saith to them: Take him you, and crucify him: for I find no cause in him. When therefore the chief priests and the officers saw him they cried out saying, Crucify, crucify [him]. Pilate says to them, Take him ye and crucify [him], for I find no fault in him.As soon then as the High Priests and the officers saw Him, they shouted "To the cross! To the cross!" "Take him yourselves and crucify him," said Pilate; "for I, at any rate, find no crime in him."
John 19:7The Jews answered him: We have a law; and according to the law he ought to die, because he made himself the Son of God.The Jews answered him, We have a law, and according to [our] law he ought to die, because he made himself Son of God."We," replied the Jews, "have a Law, and in accordance with that Law he ought to die, for having claimed to be the Son of God."
John 19:8When Pilate therefore had heard this saying, he feared the more. When Pilate therefore heard this word, he was the rather afraid,More alarmed than ever, Pilate no sooner heard these words than he re-entered the Praetorium and began to question Jesus.
John 19:9And he entered into the hall again, and he said to Jesus: Whence art thou? But Jesus gave him no answer.and went into the praetorium again and says to Jesus, Whence art thou? But Jesus gave him no answer."What is your origin?" he asked. But Jesus gave him no answer.
John 19:10Pilate therefore saith to him: Speakest thou not to me? knowest thou not that I have power to crucify thee, and I have power to release thee?Pilate therefore says to him, Speakest thou not to *me*? Dost thou not know that I have authority to release thee and have authority to crucify thee?"Do you refuse to speak even to me?" asked Pilate; "do you not know that I have it in my power either to release you or to crucify you?"
John 19:11Jesus answered: Thou shouldst not have any power against me, unless it were given thee from above. Therefore, he that hath delivered me to thee, hath the greater sin.Jesus answered, Thou hadst no authority whatever against me if it were not given to thee from above. On this account he that has delivered me up to thee has [the] greater sin."You would have had no power whatever over me," replied Jesus, "had it not been granted you from above. On that account he who has delivered me up to you is more guilty than you are."
John 19:12And from henceforth Pilate sought to release him. But the Jews cried out, saying: If thou release this man, thou art not Caesar's friend. For whosoever maketh himself a king, speaketh against Caesar. From this time Pilate sought to release him; but the Jews cried out saying, If thou releasest this [man], thou art not a friend to Caesar. Every one making himself a king speaks against Caesar.Upon receiving this answer, Pilate was for releasing Him. But the Jews kept shouting, "If you release this man, you are no friend of Caesar's. Every one who sets himself up as king declares himself a rebel against Caesar."
John 19:13Now when Pilate had heard these words, he brought Jesus forth, and sat down in the judgment seat, in the place that is called Lithostrotos, and in Hebrew Gabbatha.Pilate therefore, having heard these words, led Jesus out and sat down upon [the] judgment-seat, at a place called Pavement, but in Hebrew Gabbatha; On hearing this, Pilate brought Jesus out, and sat down on the judge's seat in a place called the Pavement or in Hebrew, Gabbatha.
John 19:14And it was the parasceve of the pasch, about the sixth hour, and he saith to the Jews: Behold your king.(now it was [the] preparation of the passover; it was about the sixth hour;) and he says to the Jews, Behold your king!It was the day of Preparation for the Passover, about six o'clock in the morning. Then he said to the Jews, "There is your king!"
John 19:15But they cried out: Away with him; away with him; crucify him. Pilate saith to them: Shall I crucify your king? The chief priests answered: We have no king but Caesar. But they cried out, Take [him] away, take [him] away, crucify him. Pilate says to them, Shall I crucify your king? The chief priests answered, We have no king but Caesar. This caused a storm of outcries, "Away with him! Away with him! Crucify him!" "Am I to crucify your king?" Pilate asked. "We have no king, except Caesar," answered the High Priests.
John 19:16Then therefore he delivered him to them to be crucified. And they took Jesus, and led him forth.Then therefore he delivered him up to them, that he might be crucified; and they took Jesus and led him away.Then Pilate gave Him up to them to be crucified. Accordingly they took Jesus;
John 19:17And bearing his own cross, he went forth to that place which is called Calvary, but in Hebrew Golgotha. And he went out, bearing his cross, to the place called [place] of a skull, which is called in Hebrew, Golgotha;and He went out carrying His own cross, to the place called Skull-place or, in Hebrew, Golgotha
John 19:18Where they crucified him, and with him two others, one on each side, and Jesus in the midst.where they crucified him, and with him two others, [one] on this side, and [one] on that, and Jesus in the middle.where they nailed Him to a cross, and two others at the same time, one on each side and Jesus in the middle.
John 19:19And Pilate wrote a title also, and he put it upon the cross. And the writing was: JESUS OF NAZARETH, THE KING OF THE JEWS.And Pilate wrote a title also and put it on the cross. But there was written: Jesus the Nazaraean, the King of the Jews. And Pilate wrote a notice and had it fastened to the top of the cross. It ran thus: JESUS THE NAZARENE, THE KING OF THE JEWS.
John 19:20This title therefore many of the Jews did read: because the place where Jesus was crucified was nigh to the city: and it was written in Hebrew, in Greek, and in Latin. This title therefore many of the Jews read, for the place of the city where Jesus was crucified was near; and it was written in Hebrew, Greek, Latin. Many of the Jews read this notice, for the place where Jesus was crucified was near the city, and the notice was in three languages Hebrew, Latin, and Greek.
John 19:21Then the chief priests of the Jews said to Pilate: Write not, The King of the Jews; but that he said, I am the King of the Jews. The chief priests of the Jews therefore said to Pilate, Do not write, The king of the Jews, but that *he* said, I am king of the Jews. This led the Jewish High Priests to remonstrate with Pilate. "You should not write `The King of the Jews,'" they said, "but that he claimed to be King of the Jews."
John 19:22Pilate answered: What I have written, I have written.Pilate answered, What I have written, I have written."What I have written I have written," was Pilate's answer.
John 19:23The soldiers therefore, when they had crucified him, took his garments, (and they made four parts, to every soldier a part,) and also his coat. Now the coat was without seam, woven from the top throughout. The soldiers therefore, when they had crucified Jesus, took his clothes, and made four parts, to each soldier a part, and the body-coat; but the body-coat was seamless, woven through the whole from the top.So the soldiers, as soon as they had crucified Jesus, took His garments, including His tunic, and divided them into four parts one part for each soldier. The tunic was without seam, woven from the top in one piece.
John 19:24They said then one to another: Let us not cut it, but let us cast lots for it, whose it shall be; that the scripture might be fulfilled, saying: They have parted my garments among them, and upon my vesture they have cast lot. And the soldiers indeed did these things. They said therefore to one another, Let us not rend it, but let us cast lots for it, whose it shall be; that the scripture might be fulfilled which says, They parted my garments among themselves, and on my vesture they cast lots. The soldiers therefore did these things. So they said to one another, "Do not let us tear it. Let us draw lots for it." This happened that the Scripture might be fulfilled which says, "They shared my garments among them, and drew lots for my clothing." That was just what the soldiers did.
John 19:25Now there stood by the cross of Jesus, his mother, and his mother's sister, Mary of Cleophas, and Mary Magdalen. And by the cross of Jesus stood his mother, and the sister of his mother, Mary the [wife] of Clopas, and Mary of Magdala. Now standing close to the cross of Jesus were His mother and His mother's sister, Mary the wife of Clopas, and Mary of Magdala.
John 19:26When Jesus therefore had seen his mother and the disciple standing whom he loved, he saith to his mother: Woman, behold thy son.Jesus therefore, seeing his mother, and the disciple standing by, whom he loved, says to his mother, Woman, behold thy son.So Jesus, seeing His mother, and seeing the disciple whom He loved standing near, said to His mother, "Behold, your son!"
John 19:27After that, he saith to the disciple: Behold thy mother. And from that hour, the disciple took her to his own. Then he says unto the disciple, Behold thy mother. And from that hour the disciple took her to his own home. Then He said to the disciple, "Behold, your mother!" And from that time the disciple received her into his own home.
John 19:28Afterwards, Jesus knowing that all things were now accomplished, that the scripture might be fulfilled, said: I thirst. After this, Jesus, knowing that all things were now finished, that the scripture might be fulfilled, says, I thirst. After this, Jesus, knowing that everything was now brought to an end, said that the Scripture might be fulfilled, "I am thirsty."
John 19:29Now there was a vessel set there full of vinegar. And they, putting a sponge full of vinegar and hyssop, put it to his mouth. There was a vessel therefore there full of vinegar, and having filled a sponge with vinegar, and putting hyssop round it, they put it up to his mouth. There was a jar of wine standing there. With this wine they filled a sponge, put it on the end of a stalk of hyssop, and lifted it to His mouth.
John 19:30Jesus therefore, when he had taken the vinegar, said: It is consummated. And bowing his head, he gave up the ghost. When therefore Jesus had received the vinegar, he said, It is finished; and having bowed his head, he delivered up his spirit. As soon as Jesus had taken the wine, He said, "It is finished." And then, bowing His head, He yielded up His spirit.
John 19:31Then the Jews, (because it was the parasceve,) that the bodies might not remain on the cross on the sabbath day, (for that was a great sabbath day,) besought Pilate that their legs might be broken, and that they might be taken away. The Jews therefore, that the bodies might not remain on the cross on the sabbath, for it was [the] preparation, (for the day of that sabbath was a great [day],) demanded of Pilate that their legs might be broken and they taken away.Meanwhile the Jews, because it was the day of Preparation for the Passover, and in order that the bodies might not remain on the crosses during the Sabbath (for that Sabbath was one of special solemnity), requested Pilate to have the legs of the dying men broken, and the bodies removed.
John 19:32The soldiers therefore came; and they broke the legs of the first, and of the other that was crucified with him.The soldiers therefore came and broke the legs of the first and of the other that had been crucified with him;Accordingly the soldiers came and broke the legs of the first man and also of the other who had been crucified with Jesus.
John 19:33But after they were come to Jesus, when they saw that he was already dead, they did not break his legs.but coming to Jesus, when they saw that he was already dead they did not break his legs,Then they came to Jesus Himself: but when they saw that He was already dead, they refrained from breaking His legs.
John 19:34But one of the soldiers with a spear opened his side, and immediately there came out blood and water.but one of the soldiers pierced his side with a spear, and immediately there came out blood and water. One of the soldiers, however, made a thrust at His side with a lance, and immediately blood and water flowed out.
John 19:35And he that saw it, hath given testimony, and his testimony is true. And he knoweth that he saith true; that you also may believe. And he who saw it bears witness, and his witness is true, and he knows that he says true that ye also may believe. This statement is the testimony of an eye-witness, and it is true. He knows that he is telling the truth in order that you also may believe.
John 19:36For these things were done, that the scripture might be fulfilled: You shall not break a bone of him.For these things took place that the scripture might be fulfilled, Not a bone of him shall be broken. For all this took place that the Scripture might be fulfilled which declares, "Not one of His bones shall be broken."
John 19:37And again another scripture saith: They shall look on him whom they pierced. And again another scripture says, They shall look on him whom they pierced. And again another Scripture says, "They shall look on Him whom they have pierced."
John 19:38And after these things, Joseph of Arimathea (because he was a disciple of Jesus, but secretly for fear of the Jews) besought Pilate that he might take away the body of Jesus. And Pilate gave leave. He came therefore, and took the body of Jesus. And after these things Joseph of Arimathaea, who was a disciple of Jesus, but secretly through fear of the Jews, demanded of Pilate that he might take the body of Jesus: and Pilate allowed it. He came therefore and took away the body of Jesus. After this, Joseph of Arimathaea, who was a disciple of Jesus, but for fear of the Jews a secret disciple, asked Pilate's permission to carry away the body of Jesus; and Pilate gave him leave. So he came and removed the body.
John 19:39And Nicodemus also came, (he who at the first came to Jesus by night,) bringing a mixture of myrrh and aloes, about an hundred pound weight. And Nicodemus also, who at first came to Jesus by night, came, bringing a mixture of myrrh and aloes, about a hundred pounds [weight].Nicodemus too he who at first had visited Jesus by night came bringing a mixture of myrrh and aloes, in weight about seventy or eighty pounds.
John 19:40They took therefore the body of Jesus, and bound it in linen cloths, with the spices, as the manner of the Jews is to bury. They took therefore the body of Jesus and bound it up in linen with the spices, as it is the custom with the Jews to prepare for burial.Taking down the body they wrapped it in linen cloths along with the spices, in accordance with the Jewish mode of preparing for burial.
John 19:41Now there was in the place where he was crucified, a garden; and in the garden a new sepulchre, wherein no man yet had been laid. But there was in the place where he had been crucified a garden, and in the garden a new tomb in which no one had ever been laid. There was a garden at the place where Jesus had been crucified, and in the garden a new tomb, in which no one had yet been buried.
John 19:42There, therefore, because of the parasceve of the Jews, they laid Jesus, because the sepulchre was nigh at hand. There therefore, on account of the preparation of the Jews, because the tomb was near, they laid Jesus. Therefore, because it was the day of Preparation for the Jewish Passover, and the tomb was close at hand, they put Jesus there.
