Mark 5:1 | And they came over the strait of the sea into the country of the Gerasens. | And they came to the other side of the sea, to the country of the Gadarenes. | So they arrived at the opposite shore of the Lake, in the country of the Gerasenes. |
Mark 5:2 | And as he went out of the ship, immediately there met him out of the monuments a man with an unclean spirit, | And immediately on his going out of the ship there met him out of the tombs a man possessed by an unclean spirit, | At once, on His landing, there came from the tombs to meet Him a man possessed by a foul spirit. |
Mark 5:3 | Who had his dwelling in the tombs, and no man now could bind him, not even with chains. | who had his dwelling in the tombs; and no one was able to bind him, not even with chains; | This man lived among the tombs, nor could any one now secure him even with a chain; |
Mark 5:4 | For having been often bound with fetters and chains, he had burst the chains, and broken the fetters in pieces, and no one could tame him. | because he had been often bound with fetters and chains, and the chains had been torn asunder by him, and the fetters were shattered; and no one was able to subdue him. | for many a time he had been left securely bound in fetters and chains, but afterwards the chains lay torn link from link, and the fetters in fragments, and there was no one strong enough to master him. |
Mark 5:5 | And he was always day and night in the monuments and in the mountains, crying and cutting himself with stones. | And continually night and day, in the tombs and in the mountains, he was crying and cutting himself with stones. | And constantly, day and night, he remained among the tombs or on the hills, shrieking, and mangling himself with sharp stones. |
Mark 5:6 | And seeing Jesus afar off, he ran and adored him. | But seeing Jesus from afar off, he ran and did him homage, | And when he saw Jesus in the distance, he ran and threw himself at His feet, |
Mark 5:7 | And crying with a loud voice, he said: What have I to do with thee, Jesus the Son of the most high God? I adjure thee by God that thou torment me not. | and crying with a loud voice he says, What have I to do with thee, Jesus, Son of the Most High God? I adjure thee by God, torment me not. | crying out in a loud voice, "What hast Thou to do with me, Jesus, Son of God Most High? In God's name I implore Thee not to torment me." |
Mark 5:8 | For he said unto him: Go out of the man, thou unclean spirit. | For he said to him, Come forth, unclean spirit, out of the man. | For He had said to him, "Foul spirit, come out of the man." |
Mark 5:9 | And he asked him: What is thy name? And he saith to him: My name is Legion, for we are many. | And he asked him, What is thy name? And he says to him, Legion is my name, because we are many. | Jesus also questioned him. "What is your name?" He said. "Legion," he replied, "for there are a host of us." |
Mark 5:10 | And he besought him much, that he would not drive him away out of the country. | And he besought him much that he would not send them away out of the country. | And he earnestly entreated Him not to send them away out of the country. |
Mark 5:11 | And there was there near the mountain a great herd of swine, feeding. | Now there was there just at the mountain a great herd of swine feeding; | Feeding there, on the mountain slope, was a great herd of swine. |
Mark 5:12 | And the spirits besought him, saying: Send us into the swine, that we may enter into them. | and they besought him, saying, Send us into the swine that we may enter into them. | So they besought Jesus. "Send us to the swine," they said, "so that we may enter into them." |
Mark 5:13 | And Jesus immediately gave them leave. And the unclean spirits going out, entered into the swine: and the herd with great violence was carried headlong into the sea, being about two thousand, and were stifled in the sea. | And Jesus [immediately] allowed them. And the unclean spirits going out entered into the swine, and the herd rushed down the steep slope, into the sea (about two thousand), and were choked in the sea. | He gave them leave; and the foul spirits came out and entered into the swine, and the herd about 2,000 in number rushed headlong down the cliff into the Lake and were drowned in the Lake. |
Mark 5:14 | And they that fed them fled, and told it in the city and in the fields. And they went out to see what was done: | And those that were feeding them fled and reported it in the city and in the country. And they went out to see what it was that had taken place. | The swineherds fled, and spread the news in town and country. So the people came to see what it was that had happened; |
Mark 5:15 | And they came to Jesus, and they see him that was troubled with the devil, sitting, clothed, and well in his wits, and they were afraid. | And they come to Jesus, and they see the possessed of demons sitting [and] clothed and sensible, [him] that had had the legion: and they were afraid. | and when they came to Jesus, they beheld the demoniac quietly seated, clothed and of sane mind the man who had had the legion; and they were awe-stricken. |
Mark 5:16 | And they that had seen it, told them, in what manner he had been dealt with who had the devil; and concerning the swine. | And they that had seen [it] related to them how it had happened to the [man] possessed by demons, and concerning the swine. | And those who had seen it told them the particulars of what had happened to the demoniac, and all about the swine. |
Mark 5:17 | And they began to pray him that he would depart from their coasts. | And they began to beg him to depart from their coasts. | Then they began entreating Him to depart from their district. |
Mark 5:18 | And when he went up into the ship, he that had been troubled with the devil, began to beseech him that he might be with him. | And as he went on board ship, the man that had been possessed by demons besought him that he might be with him. | As He was embarking, the man who had been possessed asked permission to accompany Him. |
Mark 5:19 | And he admitted him not, but saith to him: Go into thy house to thy friends, and tell them how great things the Lord hath done for thee, and hath had mercy on thee. | And he suffered him not, but says to him, Go to thine home to thine own people, and tell them how great things the Lord has done for thee, and has had mercy on thee. | But He would not allow it. "Go home to your family," He said, "and report to them all that the Lord has done for you, and the mercy He has shown you." |
Mark 5:20 | And he went his way, and began to publish in Decapolis how great things Jesus had done for him: and all men wondered. | And he went away and began to proclaim in the Decapolis how great things Jesus had done for him; and all wondered. | So the man departed, and related publicly everywhere in the Ten Towns all that Jesus had done for him; and all were astonished. |
Mark 5:21 | And when Jesus had passed again in the ship over the strait, a great multitude assembled together unto him, and he was nigh unto the sea. | And Jesus having passed over in the ship again to the other side, a great crowd gathered to him; and he was by the sea. | When Jesus had re-crossed in the boat to the other side, a vast multitude came crowding to Him; and He was on the shore of the Lake, |
Mark 5:22 | And there cometh one of the rulers of the synagogue named Jairus: and seeing him, falleth down at his feet. | And [behold] there comes one of the rulers of the synagogue, by name Jairus, and seeing him, falls down at his feet; | when there came one of the Wardens of the Synagogue he was called Jair who, on beholding Him, threw himself at His feet, |
Mark 5:23 | And he besought him much, saying: My daughter is at the point of death, come, lay thy hand upon her, that she may be safe, and may live. | and he besought him much, saying, My little daughter is at extremity; [I pray] that thou shouldest come and lay thy hands upon her so that she may be healed, and may live. | and besought Him with many entreaties. "My little daughter," he said, "is at the point of death: I pray you come and lay your hands upon her, that she may recover and live." |
Mark 5:24 | And he went with him, and a great multitude followed him, and they thronged him. | And he went with him, and a large crowd followed him and pressed on him. | And Jesus went with him. And a dense crowd followed Him, and thronged Him on all sides. |
Mark 5:25 | And a woman who was under an issue of blood twelve years, | And a certain woman who had had a flux of blood twelve years, | Now a woman who for twelve years had suffered from haemorrhage, |
Mark 5:26 | And had suffered many things from many physicians; and had spent all that she had, and was nothing the better, but rather worse, | and had suffered much under many physicians, and had spent everything she had and had found no advantage from it, but had rather got worse, | and had undergone many different treatments under a number of doctors and had spent all she had without receiving benefit but on the contrary growing worse, |
Mark 5:27 | When she had heard of Jesus, came in the crowd behind him, and touched his garment. | having heard concerning Jesus, came in the crowd behind and touched his clothes; | heard of Jesus. And she came in the crowd behind Him and touched His cloak; |
Mark 5:28 | For she said: If I shall touch but his garment, I shall be whole. | for she said, If I shall touch but his clothes I shall be healed. | for she said, "If I but touch His clothes, I shall be cured." |
Mark 5:29 | And forthwith the fountain of her blood was dried up, and she felt in her body that she was healed of the evil. | And immediately her fountain of blood was dried up, and she knew in her body that she was cured from the scourge. | In a moment the flow of her blood ceased, and she felt in herself that her complaint was cured. |
Mark 5:30 | And immediately Jesus knowing in himself the virtue that had proceeded from him, turning to the multitude, said: Who hath touched my garments? | And immediately Jesus, knowing in himself the power that had gone out of him, turning round in the crowd said, Who has touched my clothes? | Immediately Jesus, well knowing that healing power had gone from within Him, turned round in the crowd and asked, "Who touched my clothes?" |
Mark 5:31 | And his disciples said to him: Thou seest the multitude thronging thee, and sayest thou who hath touched me? | And his disciples said to him, Thou seest the crowd pressing on thee, and sayest thou, Who touched me? | "You see the multitude pressing you on all sides," His disciples exclaimed, "and yet you ask, `Who touched me?'" |
Mark 5:32 | And he looked about to see her who had done this. | And he looked round about to see her who had done this. | But He continued looking about to see the person who had done this, |
Mark 5:33 | But the woman fearing and trembling, knowing what was done in her, came and fell down before him, and told him all the truth. | But the woman, frightened and trembling, knowing what had taken place in her, came and fell down before him, and told him all the truth. | until the woman, frightened and trembling, knowing what had happened to her, came and threw herself at His feet, and told Him all the truth. |
Mark 5:34 | And he said to her: Daughter, thy faith hath made thee whole: go in peace, and be thou whole of thy disease. | And he said to her, Daughter, thy faith has healed thee; go in peace, and be well of thy scourge. | "Daughter," He said, "your faith has cured you: go in peace, and be free from your complaint." |
Mark 5:35 | While he was yet speaking, some come from the ruler of the synagogue's house, saying: Thy daughter is dead: why dost thou trouble the master any further? | While he was yet speaking, they come from the ruler of the synagogue's [house], saying, Thy daughter has died, why troublest thou the teacher any further? | While He is yet speaking, men come from the house to the Warden, and say, "Your daughter is dead: why trouble the Rabbi further?" |
Mark 5:36 | But Jesus having heard the word that was spoken, saith to the ruler of the synagogue: Fear not, only believe. | But Jesus [immediately], having heard the word spoken, says to the ruler of the synagogue, Fear not; only believe. | But Jesus, overhearing the words, said to the Warden, "Do not be afraid; only have faith." |
Mark 5:37 | And he admitted not any man to follow him, but Peter, and James, and John the brother of James. | And he suffered no one to accompany him save Peter and James, and John the brother of James. | And He allowed no one to accompany Him except Peter and the brothers James and John. |
Mark 5:38 | And they come to the house of the ruler of the synagogue; and he seeth a tumult, and people weeping and wailing much. | And he comes to the house of the ruler of the synagogue, and sees the tumult, and people weeping and wailing greatly. | So they come to the Warden's house. Here He gazes on a scene of uproar, with people weeping aloud and wailing. |
Mark 5:39 | And going in, he saith to them: Why make you this ado, and weep? the damsel is not dead, but sleepeth. | And entering in he says to them, Why do ye make a tumult and weep? the child has not died, but sleeps. | He goes in. "Why all this outcry and loud weeping?" He asks; "the child is asleep, not dead." |
Mark 5:40 | And they laughed him to scorn. But he having put them all out, taketh the father and the mother of the damsel, and them that were with him, and entereth in where the damsel was lying. | And they derided him. But he, having put [them] all out, takes with [him] the father of the child, and the mother, and those that were with him, and enters in where the child was lying. | To this their reply is a scornful laugh. He, however, puts them all out, takes the child's father and mother and those He has brought with Him, and enters the room where the child lies. |
Mark 5:41 | And taking the damsel by the hand, he saith to her: Talitha cumi, which is, being interpreted: Damsel (I say to thee) arise. | And having laid hold of the hand of the child, he says to her, Talitha koumi, which is, interpreted, Damsel, I say to thee, Arise. | Then, taking her by the hand, He says to her, "Talitha, koum;" that is to say, "Little girl, I command you to wake!" |
Mark 5:42 | And immediately the damsel rose up, and walked: and she was twelve years old: and they were astonished with a great astonishment. | And immediately the damsel arose and walked, for she was twelve years old. And they were astonished with great astonishment. | Instantly the little girl rises to her feet and begins to walk (for she was twelve years old). They were at once beside themselves with utter astonishment; |
Mark 5:43 | And he charged them strictly that no man should know it: and commanded that something should be given her to eat. | And he charged them much that no one should know this; and he desired that [something] should be given her to eat. | but He gave strict injunctions that the matter should not be made known, and directed them to give her something to eat. |
